"I meant warmth, my voice said cold" my autistic ass is going to be using this line regularly from now on! 😂
@Alex
Same
That one got me! Ahahaha!
if only people would respond like Stephen did, then I'd know I'd made a mistake and could clear up the misunderstanding
SAME
Me too.
My mam got me to watch this since I'm autistic and when she said "I meant warmth, my voice said cold" I texted her saying "SHE TALKS LIKE ME!!!"
sometimes that even happens with me, like when you say something and you meant the opposite. I am not on the spectrum though, just interesting to know. :))
Same. A friend thought I was being sarcastic with him but now realises that’s just my tone of voice sometimes.
This just warms my heart! This is why representativeness matters
totally same here. i say that i am good with words it is my job too often. most often when I start talking in wobbly circles and what was I saying
It's disproportionate how excited I got seeing someone else write "Mam".
"I am not a flexable thinker" oh how I can relate to that.
Yes that's a mild autistic trait of many of us!
I mean, what idiot would do anything spontaneous and fun without planning?!
My planner says "11:31 AM, Sunday, the 30th of July, I'm planning to have a laugh".
Surprisingly I really enjoyed this interview. It felt genuinely awkward but not uncomfortable ... which is the BEST kinda awkward in an interview.
Wessel, I think she is one of the few people that could leave Stephen lost for words. She is much loved here downunder.
Same. Well described. I'm going to watch her special right now.
I think she would have hit it off with Craig Ferguson. He was the master of awkward silences and humour in general.

@@kibordpengin No one said that, Jesus fuck 🤦♀️
That would be gold😂😂😂
You can tell how good of an interviewer Colbert is in this. He matches the awkwardness in a way that lets Gadsby shine and even enhances the humor. I would also say his chameleon abilities probably set a (most likely) anxious Gadsby at ease.
I was impressed with both of them too. It was super funny watching him squirm a lil though cause he couldn't read autistic sincerity. Watching him like "wait, are you making fun of me? No? Okay, you're weird and I like you."
I love how Colbert knew how to speak to an autistic person, it’s what made her feel more comfortable too. Also made communication easier as context is hard to manage when speaking with someone on the spectrum
@@shadi5885 I loved when she was able to say "I'm not a flexible thinker" for so many reasons. On her end, its knowledge of self in an easy to understand package. On his end, he acknowledged and allowed without questioning what it meant.
Yes, that is a spot on assessment in my opinion. 👍🏽
You can tell when Stephen uses this ability and when he chooses to leave tension in the air with certain people (usually I’ve noticed if they have more arrogance or an indifference to being there)
Nothing brings out the subtler differences between American and Australian humour like watching Hannah being interviewed on American talk shows 😂😂😂

@@PhillyFrank1 Without knowing where you're from I can't tell if you're picking on Hannah or not (I hope not) but as a non-Tasmanian non-autistic Australian her humor makes perfect sense to me.
I have to say, as an autistic person it is so nice and so beautiful to see another autistic person being welcomed with open arms for being their full authentic self. In many of our experiences, it's rare to be received so well and so respectfully from another person. It's especially amazing to see it happen on such a large stage. For the first time I feel represented and it warms my heart. I also really feel like more people would really vibe more with autistic people if they gave us a chance and got past their weird hang ups and misconceptions about us
"gave us a chance and got past their weird hang-ups and misconceptions about us" YES! Atypical ppl are actually so often so narrow minded in general. it would do them a world of good to open up to non-conforming perspectives. People do sometimes conform to the most ridiculous things too and are surprised when ASD people don't want to join them in behavior that, with some reflection could be seen to be cruel and/or unhealthy
Still not funny. Which is the most important thing.
@@anjilala I think that was a very board generalization. Though I also have a feeling that maybe this is a mistype. Instead of atypical maybe you meant neurotypical. I have ADHD and thus also neuro-atyptical. I do not have the same struggles day to day as someone with autism, but we can definitely relate on some levels but be understood on many more.
yeah this was INCREDIBLE! I love how she explicitly and casually just says "I'm not a flexible thinker" :D :D

Didn't know she had a Ted Talk, thanks
I just watched it, that's why I'm now watching this 😂. She's so good.
Her what??
@@Victoura56 Watch her commencement speech at U of Tasmania, on YT. Really wonderful.
It's so refreshing to hear her explain miscommunication without apologizing for it, I may be wrong in assuming this but I believe neuro-divergent people in general might feel that the way they are is something they should apologize for but this was more natural and nice
We don't need to apologize for who we are. I think just being straightforward with others and pointing out personal differences, owning the skills we are lacking is what can help others to learn how to better deal with us.
I love Hannah; one of the smartest and most clever comediennes working today. Any haters should check out Douglas, she has some beautiful words for you ;)
When we feel like we have to apologize, it's because we have been brainwashed into apologize for who we are, how we think, how communicate, and basically for breathing. I think the world misses a lot by not encouraging Neurodivergency. We each bring different skills and perspectives that enrich the human experience.
I absolutely support those struggling with neurodiversity. However, I do believe we often say sorry or excuse me when we don't clearly understand what someone is saying. Apologies don't necessarily have to imply you are at fault, flawed, or anything else. Sometimes they are just a simple way of being polite. Nobody should have to apologize for who they are though. I love how she simply states "I am not a flexible thinker." 👍😂
Military looks for those special talents, because of your ability to hyper focus. 👍
Unfortunately our society and schools teach us autistics that we should apologize... Which turns out to be horribly degrading to our self esteem and probably is one of the reasons for our horribly high suicide rate
Who knew "awkward but not uncomfortable" could be so hilarious? Brilliantly real...
You should see Tig Notaro. She's a master at it
Love to see a fellow Spectrum kid being herself and explaining things like "oh, I have a problem with tone." I have to do the same thing. Love you, Hannah.
Hannah is "no bullshit" personified. Like I watch interviews sometimes and ask myself to what extent the interviewee just had to act as if they understood the question they were just asked. And Hannah's just like "I have absolutely no idea what you just said to me" and it's so honest and wonderful and I love her a lot

For the possibly confused Americans ... That's Hannah & it's not an act.
I was actually thinking we should make the same statement to Allistic people. She sounded very familiar to me...
What ever you like 'Bee' .. I'm just gunna call her Hannah :\
I knew what she meant about having to finish the whole spiel, and then tone being misunderstood.
@@BeeWhistler Thank you for the term Allistic. I had been using "neurotypical" up to now, but they are not, they are even more diverse as a group than we are. So allistic seems appropriate. Wondering about the capital, though. I think --- people is a nice addition. You cannot get autistic dogs, so dogs are definitely included in the all of allistic (I know it stands for allos, meaning other, I looked it up, but I just read it as short for "all others" in my mind and I think most people will do).
So "allistic people" narrows it down nicely, because you can have allistic animals, unlike autistic animals.
I am a bit suspicious of this culture of counter-labeling. Cisgendered, priviliged, you know, that kind of thing. Do we need more words to say that we are all different? That everybody can be put in a little box eventually?
It seems a bit divide and conquer. I think it´s from the bible: do unto others, that which you don´t like them doing to you. An eye for an eye, leaves everybody blind.
Our accent is so unnoticeable here but man it stands out next to the American tones! She does a great ted talk too, btw

"I'm not a flexible thinker". This interview was actually very helpful on learning how to communicate. She seems to be affected sensorily, but still trooping through it. I bet she took a bath in the dark afterwards.
Great. I like the way the interviewer can let go of being in charge and go into uncertain territory..He is obviously astute and I think he genuinely liked Hannah .
"I am wasting a real wicket here" thumps up if you are from other part of the world and knew what she said at the first place.

Wow, my life is suddenly better... what a uniquely funny and inspiring person... once in a blue moon an interview is affected by a chemistry that moves it into uncharted territory and magic happens.
beautifully put!
Craig Ferguson did it every night when he was on the late late show.
She is authentically herself. Most people have trouble with being themselves.
To a certain degree you hide from the audience behind the punchline.. while fully exposed, alone on a stage, with all eyes scrutinizing your every move. Seems to me the whole point of was not to hide anything from the audience. She used the punchlines strategically to release tension, or to address absurdity, while sidestepping out from behind it, so the punch didn't obscure the harsh truths at all. Brilliant isn't a shiny enough word for it.
If you like comedians utilising tension without punchlines, check out Daniel Sloss' first Netflix special. It's not as jarring as Gadsby, but still good

She is amazingly intelligent and funny in a non-conventional way. Love listening to her.
She gets so many hateful comments, totally heinous and undeserved. Like most hateful comments, I guess. But men in particular have a problem with her outspoken opinion on misogyny.
Imagine that.
well quite logical really that men should have a problem with misandry...
J G I’m guessing you are one of those that do not harass or assault women, and also are upset that those women who have been assaulted have a dim view of men. She was raped as a child, and does have little good to say of men who harass and assault and mistreat women and girls. Picasso was one. The #metoo movement has opened many eyes to the huge scope of the issue. Statistics say you know a few women who have been assaulted or harassed.
Hannah speaks out hard because she suffered and is suffering because her experience was severe. I think it would be hard to forgive those who hurt her and those who told her to put up and be quiet, because men are entitled to treat woman however they please.
Sorry if you’ve felt upset, because you’re not an abuser, and might even speak out against misogyny, but just because you exist...and good for you....nothing significant will be done until the scope and enormity of the issue is taken seriously. I understand Hannah not being “fair” , because stifling her hard words is denying her right to speak to her truth, which was horrific.
And #metoo, btw.
Her jokes are dry and don't even make people laugh, it's almost like a ted talk.

Seeing Hannah on the late-night talk show circuit and the Emmies evokes the same kind of feeling as seeing Eric Bana playing serious roles in Hollywood films.
OMG I ❤ HER. So happy to see her on one of my favorite shows. 🙌🏽
@Brian Mull I'm actually more moderate tbh. But thanks for judging me for no reason. 😂
This is like my favorite talk show interview I have ever seen. So funny the way the two just clash, but so sweetly.
Hannah Gadsby is so refreshing, & such a joy, love her work 😍
Hannah is my absolute favorite comedian. I am always laughing until I cry. I am so glad she is having such success.
good one. ha
She's Brilliant
God it is so nice to see somebody who doesn't even know how not to be themselves. If I had a show she would be my guest every week.
OK I'm watching this interview several times. It is so funny. I love seeing Stephen Colbert react.
Nanette❤️❤️❤️💓
Thank you for bringing us your amazing storytelling
Being 'weird' myself, I really appreciate all unique, peculiar, out-of-box personalities on this planet. Especially ones that makes us laugh and simply tell people that they should get rock babies instead of having human ones. You go Hannah!
I love how she fucking ran this interview. They are both brilliant in their own way but she made it clear she was running it.
Back to watch this in 2022, and loving "I meant warmth; my tone said 'cold'" ❤❤
