- The University Council has elected to bestow this honour on Hannah Gadsby for her outstanding work of as an international ambassador for the lives of all LGBTIQ+ people world-wide, and her profound impact on contemporary popular culture, especially given her Tasmanian upbringing and the unique interweaving of Tasmania into her work and stories.
In 1998 Ms Hannah Gadsby studied at the University of Tasmania. She is now an internationally renowned comedian, actor, and ‘closet art scholar.’ Her ground-breaking stand-up show, Nanette, ran for 18 months through 2017 and 2018 to sold-out houses across Australia and in London, Edinburgh, New York and Los Angeles. It won the 2017 Best Comedy Show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and, when it was launched on Netflix in June 2018, became the most widely discussed comedy special in years. In it, Gadsby deconstructs stand-up comedy from the inside out, while simultaneously shining an unflinching light upon homophobia, sexism, violence, and misogyny - all pertaining to her own lived experience.
Analyses and commentary on the show and on the impact Gadsby had and continues to have on informing national and international conversations on such matters have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Atlantic, Slate, The New Republic, The Guardian and Rolling Stone, among others. Truly Hannah Gadsby can be described as an international ambassador for the lives of all LGBTIQ+ people world-wide. But of crucial importance for Gadsby’s work is the fact that she was born in Smithton and grew up in regional Tasmania. Never does she let her audience forget that she is Tasmanian while she single-handedly changes the art form that is comedy, to enact a profound impact on contemporary popular culture.
In 2014 ABC TV aired a three-part series called Hannah Gadsby’s Oz. Drawing on her studies in art history, in this series Gadsby travelled across Australia “on a mission to debunk the myths of the Australian identity as defined by Australian art.” She was in search of a more inclusive national identity, which proved elusive. Nonetheless, along the way Gadsby gently yet incisively revealed to the viewers, in her words, “a dream Oz; a forgery made up of myth and ignorance.”
In all her work, Hannah is intent on helping to humanise the human race, which means helping all of us to acknowledge painful truths while never giving up on the possibility of healing - and whether that healing comes from laughter or from anger is an open question.
By the authority vested in my office, I admit you to the degree of Doctor of Literature honoris causa.

This woman is a genius. She’s so highly intelligent and creative and she uses those two superpowers in tandem to create genius inspirational works, such as this speech
😊
Agree 🙂
The Dunning Kruger effect. You may suffer from it
@@saltybrackishfresh 178 to 1. Maybe it's you.🤔
Her book "Ten Steps to Nanette" is a masterpiece of thought provoking stories all leading to her dramatic show "Nanette".
Who she is, how she came to write "Nanette" and how it sits in Australia and particularly Tasmania's story is all woven through the astonishing way she sees, feels, hears and breathes.
An absolutely compelling read.
"Only a question has the capacity to be flexible enough to be wisdom. Statements are oblivious to the nuance of you."
Gobsmacked with gratitude for Hannah! 💓
Yes, cause the answer is curated for you, by yourself :)
That is THE most inspiring speech i have ever heard. As a person who is healing from lifetime of trauma, I relate to Hanna’s desire to be kind. I have often had my trauma spill out at the worst moments and I have struggled with my therapist on how to deal with so much.
But by asking myself who I want to be… prompts thinking that allows me to consider all options in the moment. Takes me away from where I am now, and affords me the ability to consider being kind to myself. Bloody hell!!! This is life changing. I’m 52, had 5 intensive years of therapy and have made good and steady progress, but I think Hannah might have just given me the most useful tool I could ever have hoped for.
If you ever read this Hannah, THANK YOU. thanks you soooooo very much. Yes, alive people can write good too. 😂🥰😂🥰
The moment my tears began to flow was when you said, “I want to be kind.”
She is so talented. This speech deserves to make history.
Blew me away…..I’m 56…20 years ago I said to my partner as we were having that ‘ on my gravestone I want written convo…….’ ……..She was kind…. The roller coaster ride of Nanette took me to the edge…and then gently brought me back……..this speech is inspiring and normalising(subjectively speaking), and as powerful as Minchins. ”10 life lessons’(word porn). In fact more so, with dignity and humanity, Hannah forges the path for one way… inclusivism (did I just make up that word?) yet ‘inclusivity’ doesn’t seem to cut it
Such a powerful and thought provoking speech. This actually brought tears to my eyes (happy emotional tears). As a parent of autistic children, I love to hear autistic adults voices. You're inspirational 🙌
I wish I heard this when I was 17- not 57! Trauma has shaped and destroyed me over and over, healing has come late and I carry so much pain and regret. I just try to make everyone I meet feel like they are in a bubble of happiness, and it is working wonders!

“I wasn’t ready to be a fully functioning member of society”
I recognize this in my own life’s story. The greatest growth as a human is often done very far away from university lecture halls.
Hannah, thank you for sharing your voice and your story with us. University of Tasmania, thank you for bringing her in.
I love Hannah Gadsby so much. She is a treasure we do not deserve.
I came here from the ted talk, that had grabbed me, and hugged me in a very new way. And now I feel the strength to go get up and work on my book. And maybe on my traumata as well.
"True leaders stand FOR people. They don't stand against SOME people." Exactly!
Lmao. She only stands for SOME people.
@@danmunoz4348 who are the people she doesn't stand with?
@@nd8246 she seems to have a thing for making "jokes" about men and their "arrogance, toxicity (lol really?), misogyny"... just the usual mate haha, sounds passive aggressive to me and hateful.
@@nd8246 I have sisters and a mother and they love to crack jokes, i see she is a voice for the lgbtq community but not for women like the one's in my family... stuff she talks about would make my sisters and mother just shake their head's and laugh at the "crap" as they would call it... howabout just stand for you and your family mate, don't worry for randoms.
@@mr.sunnyg5510 She makes it clear in her jokes which men she is talking about. She NEVER talks about men in general in that way.
Humble thanks for being someone who speaks. Even when it’s hard, it is heard.
Hannah - this is ALL I would have wanted to say growing up as a gay woman in Tasmania with the same colonial legacy. You are amazing. I have only ever fantasied about having my voice in such a way as this! I cannot commend and thank you enough!
Well I have never commented on CZcams before, but Hannah Gadsby, well done!
may you find a positive reason to comment again. :-)
With tears in my eyes I celebrate the joy of your message. Your truth inspires me to work harder to be who I need to be. Thank you for your honesty and courage.
"Alive people can write real good, you know."
What a brilliant buffet of spot-on social criticism complemented with inspiration and wisdom!
Hannah has learned so much. Unique voice. Brave. “Be kind. When in doubt, double down.” ~ Tim Minchin
Thank you, Hannah. This is such a thoughtful speech that I am now going to share it with many friends. I'm in the LGBTIQ+ community, as well as a woman, as well as a Christian (with a great deal of skepticism), as well as a former academic. With all of this, your speech resonated in me in many ways, including the trauma of rejection and the quest to find out who I want to be. In fact, the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting unemployment have forced me to face the question you raise, and for that I am grateful. Thank you, thank you. You are a brave, honest, thoughtful, open, and brilliant woman, and I am grateful for you.
I really like who you have chosen to be. Kindness is searching for new homes everywhere, and yours is perfect.
Hannah's voice is one that we need to hear, and what she says is both deeply meaningful, and tolerant - or kind, as she might put it - at the same time. My wife just finished reading Nanette, and we have been close watchers of Hannah Gadsby for a number of years now. Long may she hold the stage!
I just found this and shared it to my daughter, who happens to be graduating Saturday from College. Well said, well done. Thank you.
Who do I want to be? Someone at least half as smart, brave, and kind as Hannah Gadsby.
Thank you, Hannah. For speaking this, for being, for persevering. You are an inspiration. Words fail me in describing how much you inspire me.
Hannah, You give me the strength to keep going. As an autistic queer woman you inspire me. I also love tea.
No one fails on their own.
I hang on to each word you say. Thank you for provoking change but also to bring personal internal conflicts to a state of acquiescence and leaving wriggle room to consider an alternative peace.
Hannah, you are such a powerful speaker. I appreciate your honesty and wisdom. I hope to hear much more from you. Anxiety is my constant companion also, even after years of therapy. As you say, we all have our own story. Shout out loud!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hannah - what a beautiful speech. Thank you for persevering. What an amazing human being you are.
She’s our woman and she is rather fabulous
Oh Hannah! 🌷🌻🌼🌺🌹🌸
I love you so much!
Thank you for saying what needs to be said.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤
It’s inevitable; when you speak from your heart and shares the most profound aspect of your humanity, then the genius springs forth
Thank you. Such a beautiful and powerful speech. My partner is also autistic and she struggles with anxiety and traumas. I just played this for her and I hope she draws some strength from it.
Hannah is a wonderful beautiful human being whom should be invited to speak at every university. In this world of hate, ignorance, and hypocrisy Hannah provides clarity from experience and bravely challenges you to be kind and compassionate to all. Who do you want to be? Thank you Hannah!
superb! Thank you for such a moving speech.
Hannah a role model for all
What a wonderful, inspiring, thoughtful, & funny commencement address. Good on you, @University of Tasmania for inviting @Hannah Gadsby. I hope the students realize what a gift this was.
A very powerful and thought provoking talk from Hannah. I don't even know her but have pride when hearing her speak in such a way that can inspire young people and set their minds to contemplation of what the can be.
No one fails alone👍🏼
An honest and de universitified ground speech peppered with wisdom and Kindness.
So powerful! Thank you Hannah Gadsby for being so full kind and for sharing your wisdom to help the world.
This woman is amazing.
What an intelligent and inspirational woman.
Is that sarcasm?

Heartfelt in a way not often done as well
Congratulations to Dr Hannah Gadsby! A truly poignant speech.
"Too often those that used the most violent language were given a bigger platform than they deserved. And that's how homophobia was politicized and weaponized in Tasmania. And it was a trick. The trick being the harvesting of hate amongst a depressed, low socioeconomic demographic who were already struggling against intergenerational poverty, welfare dependency and a criminally low literacy level. And instead of making legitimate investments in the northwest what was whipped up was a vulnerable community into a frenzy against a marginalized community within that community, manufacturing as it happened an artificial identity of proud homophobia." wow
Indeed. She is completely amazing.
Amazing speech. Thank you.
Bravo, brilliant, thank you for sharing yourself with us
An oratory of great beauty and severe insight.
Wonderful sentiments and insightful advice
Beautiful, brilliant woman.

You're so welcome!
Wow! So powerful. An inspiration.
I was just watching a video of Hannah being interviewed on a Scandinavian talk show and it was brilliant!
Thank you Hannah. It is a pleasure living on this wonderful island with such a wonderful soul as you.
I almost shed tears. Beautiful. Meaningful. Truthful. Thank you.
Just reading the comments. No hate here. Just a warm glow of appreciation and love. 😍
brilliant, a gift
So much in there. Quiet, probing, brilliant oratory. A sickening thud too as we all recognise that Tasmania has not been 'kind' to so many.
Wow- it's people like Hannah Gadsby that make me proud to be from a country no-one in the rest of the world knows or really cares about. Could you, Hannah, possible think about joining Mandy Nolan in what I hope is going to be a stint in federal government?
So glad Hannah is a doctor. Now she can give more lectures and no one can complain.
Amazing, amazing words of wisdom! Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gadsby is a bloody inspiration.
It is said comedians are modern Philosophers.
The more I hear Gadsby talk, the more impressed. I am happy to be her contemporary.
Whoa! Wish she’d spoken at my high school graduation…..
Wow, this is so powerful.
Proud.
Wow. That was an incredible speech.

Thank you Hannah. Such a thoughtful, thought provoking, deep address. Inspirational.

Brilliant! Only those of us who live outside of the norm seem able to see the the chains creating by norming. We are all more enriched by all who are different. Which actually means everyone. But not everyone has been pressed to find their unique expression in the world -- that which only they can contribute. And many have struggled to express their uniqueness, and the world has been dimmer for it. Let this be the generation who helps turn that around . . .
Powerful truth ❤
Fantastic
What A strong message
Thank you for enlightening the world with your humour, sharp observations and analysis, unique point of view and most of all your kindness. Not to forget your bravery. You are so brave, Hannah and you inspire me. Take very good care of yourself, always!
All the evidence you could hope for in this appearance that Gatsby is an awesome writer and such a gifted and witty public speaker that she introduces several rhetorical constructs not previously known to the canon of public rhetoric.
My favorite Renaissance Woman! Being that she’s THE one and only Renaissance Woman. Where has the RW series gone? I want more … WE want more. If only old Mrs. Weaver, who called us people, had even been slightly similar to Hannah. One class she addressed us as “people” 28 times in 45 minutes. As in, “People, this is a painting by ZzhOhtoh, who painted Hannah Gadsby’s favorite nativity scene … “ Ah, if only Mrs. Weaver had been even a tiny bit like Ms. Gadsby.
