    We went through the arrival/departure resident process in November when we flew into and out of Guadalajara. Of course November had to be our first return as residents so we were a bit in the dark but it worked exactly as you described. Arriving is way easier, just showed our passports and visas to immigration, and stopping at the immigration booth on the way out was just as simple.

    Interesting, when I left Puerto Vallarta last month, after I had gotten my residency card, went to INM desk and showed my temporary residency card, they said I didn't need to do anything other than just show it to the person that checks passports right before you get to the baggage screening, they didn't stamp my passport, said it was no longer necessary. The ticket agent at Alaska Airlines desk didn't ask for it either. So seems some airports aren't going by the same procedure you had to go through at your airport.

    I went in October for a few days, flying from Cancun. The INM information is correct. All the rest is what you say because your INM friend told you the procedure. Which is not the reality...maybe not yet. I can give you a new update in a few weeks. Anyway, the new system is a blessing indeed. Nothing changed, actually. You still have to go to INM, and they make a stamp, instead of a form, so you do not run the risk of losing anything. Great improvement.

  • @ctjewett
    @ctjewett Před rokem

    It’s a bit the opposite flying out of Morelia.. you go to the baggage and ticket check-in first, then go to INM, and you must show your passport with a little sticker from INM (no stamp) before entering security to get to your gate. If somehow you bypassed that, they usually bring a single INM agent that sits by the gate and they won’t let you board until you deal with INM if it’s an international flight.

    I flew out of Mexico last week from Cancun, T3. The UA airline checked me in (for the flight to ORD) without any problems (no PR stamp) and informed me that the INM kiosk was AFTER the security.
    I checked with the INM officer AFTER the security at the INM kiosk (next to the restrooms on the opposite side of gate C11).
    It was highly convenient. Unfortunately, this is still not the case in CZM (my home port).

    Those of us in Baja often drive back and forth. When I had Temporary Residency, I was ignorant or lazy and didn't check out when leaving. I would always check in at the border because my wife and or grandkids needed an FMM. During one trip, the immigration agent could see that I never checked out and told me I needed to be doing that. He told me I could check out in La Paz, where I live. It seemed odd to check out when being a two-day drive away from he border. I have yet to try it. It almost seems like I could drive back and forth and never check in and out, as they don't check at the border and now, with paperless, all I need is my card if ever asked about status (which never happens). There is NO convenient way to check out at the border. You would have to know where the immigration office is, park and walk to the office, and get in line. Border areas are extremely crowded, as you can imagine.

    I enjoy ur vids and thought you would want to see this convo on a expat site. I posted the first and was responded to: 1. Here is more conflicting info for residents.....i was told as a resident leaving the country to to to migracion at the airport to get pp stamped then go to airline and security....so....today at cdmx i had to pick up a visitor so i took the opportunity to go to migration and asked them. They told me no resident leaving mexico need to to migracion first and to just to thru reg security. The only consistency is inconsistency 2. Hasn’t been necessary for a resident to go to INM at PVR since last July. The only need was to have an FMM that was required by all airlines to board a flight. Since FMMs are not required to board a flight there is no need. The old FMM actually stated the FMM for residents was for statistical purposes only

    We have recently flown in and out of La Paz and Loreto and neither have an INM desk or kiosk in the unsecured area. At La Paz I wandered the back hallways and found a door that said INM office. I went in (surprising the officers) and then asked them about the new procedure. They responded that I didn't need to do anything leaving or returning. Just go to the airline desk and check in for the flight. When I checked in for the flight at the desk I asked about a passport stamp and the airline employee told me they don't do that when you are leaving. We returned through La Paz and went through the Resident line and just presented our passport (and received a stamp) and PR card with no issues. In Loreto it was the same procedure. Just check in with the airline and no passport stamp. As usual Mexico is consistently inconsistent!

    I'm gonna say that going to the separate immigration office before getting into the ticket line is NOT easier than just handing over the FMM. I had to do this in Guadalajara last month and the office didn't open until 9am which made for a tight run for the gate. Two weeks ago coming back from SMA, the ticket agents said there was no immigration office for me to check into and just gave me my tickets.

Gate agent yanks it off when I get into plane. I fly in and out every two week to USA. The procedure stopped last year in the summer. The INM one day just said no more. Landing in PV there is a short form declaration now and have to show PR card with passport at immigration.

    This is great to know as we have just become proud residents. On the down side, the whole reason we jumped through all those hoops to get residency was the recent uncertainty of how long they would give you to stay when entering the country. In January 2023 we Canadian tourists flew direct to Mexico City and used the self-serve immigration option. However, our return flight February 2023 from Guadalajara with American Airlines transiting DFW required us to go to the Mexican immigration kiosk to get our passports stamped before they would give us our tickets. This appeared to be a US requirement. Possibly the printed slip from the Mexican self-serve kiosk is not yet recognized by the US Border Service.

    • @jakolu

I presume that this DOES NOT mean the old days of residing in Mexico on a series of tourist cards have returned. Hi Paul and Linda, great video. I do have a question though. I recently obtained my Temporary Residency Card and often drive across the border between San Diego and Tijuana. Going into Tijuana is easy to stop and get my passport stamped. I believe INM still issues the paper FMM as you enter Tijuana. However, if I drive back to the US there isn't an INM office in the line up to enter US. The old FMM system was to just discard the slip of paper when I returned to the US. Vallarta is paperless but residents (like us) don’t have to stop at INM when leaving. The airlines fill out FMMs for you and they say it’s just for airline bookkeeping. You can either go to the ticket counter or straight to the gate if you’re not checking bags and you have a boarding pass and have them do the FMM. Either way make sure you check in with an airline agent (and show them your residency card) before getting on the plane to leave Vallarta for another country.

    Thanks for the info but I now have a question based on our recent experience after using an immigration lawyer to get our RPs back in December. Specifically we were told that when leaving Mexico (in PV) that there was no need to go to INM prior to going to the airline counter in order to check in. We were told to make sure that we first gave our RP cards to the check in person and then give him/her our passports. This was to ensure that the airline knew we were residents and that we were leaving Mexico. The checkin person never asked us any questions and sent us on our way to our gate, where we made it onto our plane back to Canada with no issues. From ur video u said that we should have gone to INM. I am a bit confused now. Because we were new residents and didn’t want to jeopardize our resident status, we were very, very specific with our lawyer as to Mexico’s expectations from us when entering and leaving the country. Basically the only thing we were told was to present our resident cards before our passports to the immigration official at his/her station upon entering Mexico and then, as stated above, to the airline when leaving. The absence of a stamp in the passport when leaving Mexico is not among the grounds for loss of permanent resident status in the law. I contacted a specialized lawyer who could not tell me what the consequence was. I continue my research but if your lawyer could indicate me the reference in the law I would appreciate. It could make for an interesting video. I left through Terminal 4 in Cancun and there is no immigration office in this terminal which makes it difficult to meet this condition. Thank you and good day.

    A paperless system works great… as long as they remember to actually *scan* your visa into it 😂😂😂 Otherwise, not even a proper stamp and signature in the passport will save you: every INM office will try to bounce you over to another one or urge you to just leave the country (effectively cancelling everything you've done to get your visa at this point) and reenter (therefore, reentering an airport where they may very well forget to scan your passport visa AGAIN). Take guess how we know this 😢😢😢
