Great to see these again now that I'm much older and somewhat wiser. Yes, Jeremy Brett was a great actor and a perfect Sherlock Holmes, but what strikes me now is just how FUNNY he was! Comedy can't be taught, you either have the instinct or you don't. He had it❤😂
In my opinion, to date these are the best adaptations of both the stories and the characters made. I consider Jeremy Brett's performance to be the quintessential version of Holmes.
Ah, the days when these were new and not reruns. PBS and show hosted by Diana Rigg. Nature and Nova and Britcoms and Masterpiece Theatre. Just a completely different flavor of existence. I miss those days.
Jeremy Brett was incomprabl as Sherlock Holmes. It was just a delight to watch him. No matter who was on screen with him you eyes were drawn go him first. It's a shame he never lived to finish the Holmes cannon.
Jeremy Brett is without doubt the best Sherlock Holmes ever. i saw Brett and Hardwick playing Holmes and Watson back in the 80s at Wyndums Theatre in that London.

Jeremy Brett has the gift of superb actors: he makes you feel included, exclusively, in a very ironic and wry secret perspective....And there is no equal to Jeremy's unabashed delight in his own/his character's deliciously rebellious idiosyncrasies and the often kind even loving indulgance in well meaning citizens, much like a parent's tender view of their child's aha moments...

I have several editions of their stories, including one with the original illustrations from "The Strand" (the magazine which published Doyle stories), books on the England of Holmes, and lots of other "Holomesiana". Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were excellent. I just don't like the portrayal of Watson as a buffoon. Like Brett and Hardwicke here, the writing and directing are exceptional.

I know.... I hate when they do that. He wasn’t an idiot. Holmes would’ve never bothered with him. Just because he had a unique gift of solving crimes doesn’t mean Watson was a bumbling idiot. Even though the Robert Downey adaptations are fluff but enjoyable even they don’t make Watson stupid. He’s smart and respected in the community...
The blue gray duster and deerstalker ... although the fashion of the day ... are very distracting. Thankfully Brett's wonderfully manic Holmes shines through that horrid ensemble.

Just a point, Boscombe is next to Bournemouth on the edge of the New Forest: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combe, so why all the Yorkshire accents, when they should be Dorset/Southern Hants accents, I am originally from the New Forest myself.
