  • Salty licorice is a favorite Scandinavian treat, and quite different from the "licorice" candy that many Americans are used to eating, which sometimes contains no real licorice at all. Conor Knighton visits Copenhagen, where bitter licorice candy has a strong following, and where entrepreneur Johan Bulow's company Lakrids has launched high-end, authentic licorice to discriminating palates around the world.

I hate that they use the term "salty" so often. Yes, "Salmiak" (NH4Cl) is A salt, but it is not THE salt (NaCl), the thing we use in cooking, and it tastes NOTHING like regular table salt. Calling this very distinct tast "salty" completely misses the flavor of it, and only makes people who haven't tasted it having the wrong idea of what this taste like.

We Dutch have loversof licorice for centuries I guess. You can get it in a wild variation in any supermarkt, any specialised candy store. It seems like we all think we are unique when it comes to licorice but it seems a Dutch, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian thing (and may be I forgot some?). But as per usual we seem to have the same preferences.
