  • He's been painting for more than 50 years, but artist Stanley Whitney - whose bold, colorful canvases offer vibrant hues and deliberately ferocious brushstrokes - is just now getting his first major retrospective (including many works never before exhibited publicly), at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in Buffalo, N.Y. Correspondent Alina Cho talks with Whitney about the breakthrough that came during his artistic journey.

    My 9 yr old was watching this segment with me this morning. She questioned why this is art when a child could have made this. It triggered a discussion on What is Art? By the end of the hour and a few google searches later, she’s at the table painting her own masterpieces.
    You never know where inspiration comes from.

    It’s all about the color. You just experience it. His greatness comes from knowing where to put the colors and in what way on the canvas. If you don’t like it or understand it then that’s ok. Doesn’t mean it’s not great.

    • @d2d2d28
      @d2d2d28 Před 15 dny +9

      No need to feel stupid- it’s not academic, it’s completely about the interplay between the colors and how you feel looking at it. If you feel uninterested in it then that’s fine since you’re not meant to understand it.

    • @cruzin7661
      @cruzin7661 Před 15 dny +3

      My kid asked this.
      I told her ‘you can make this?’
      “Yes.”
      ‘But if you did, you would be copying his style. It would be a copy of HIS art.’
      “Oh well I would make circles instead and use different colors.”
      ‘And that’s why this is Art. You take his IDEA and make it your own. Now his art has made an impression and influenced you.’

    White people acting astounded and thinking that his art is on par with Raphael or Rembrandt. One of them said that "he's the greatest american painter alive"... I like Stanley because even he seems like "what the hell do you mean "what is it about?"... i just painted colorful squares!".
