Continuing the plot of The Fellowship of the Ring, the film intercuts three storylines. Frodo and Sam continue their journey towards Mordor to destroy the One Ring, meeting and joined by Gollum, the ring's former keeper. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli come to the war-torn nation of Rohan and are reunited with the resurrected Gandalf, before fighting against the legions of the treacherous wizard Saruman at the Battle of Helm's Deep. Merry and Pippin escape capture, meet Treebeard the Ent, and help to plan an attack on Isengard, fortress of Saruman.

The primary languages Tolkien drew on for Elvish were Finnish and Welsh, while he drew on Hebrew and Arabic with the sound of Dwarvish, though Dwarven linguistic characters do look a great deal like Old Norse and many of their names are out of ancient Nordic languages. Tolkien wasn't just a professor of philology he was perhaps the leading expert on ancient Northern European languages in the world at the time. He worked on translations of Beowulf and The Green Knight as well as part of some of the Arthurian tales. But it turned out his greatest gift was in the realm of original stories that singlehandedly revitalized an interest in European folklore and birthed the modern fantasy genre. It was all him

When gave his speech, "There is some good in this world and it's worth fighting for " is so much a reflection of Tolkien's life. He was Catholic and had a very strong faith. At the age of two his father died leaving his mother penniless. It was his mother that converted to Catholism and raised her son to believe. At age 12, Tolkien lost his mother and a kindly priest took him in and sent him to the best school in Birmingham. He went to war in World War I and lost all of his friends except two and almost died himself. But through it all he knew "there is good in this world and it was worth fighting for ". He married, became a professor at Oxford and had 3 children .

Tolkien, a professor of Anglo-Saxon/Old English, was writing a mythology for England and tried to involve every language that may have had an influence on early English history. The Britons, who spoke Brythonic, once lived in England and Wales during the Iron Age and it is believed that Welsh is a surviving form of Brythonic, which is why Tolkien based the Elvish language on Welsh and Finnish (because of its rippling, flowing nature). When I first read LotR, years and years ago, I was studying Anglo-Saxon as part of my degree. When we reached Rohan in the story, it blew me away how much like Anglo-Saxon the speech of the Rohirrim was, including their poetry. It didn't surprise me to discover that Tolkien was an Anglo-Saxon expert and that he was basing Rohan on Anglo-Saxon society. He was also an expert in Old Norse and ON mythology and he brings these elements into his story too since England was invaded by the Vikings. And, since Celtic tribes lived in 'England' when the Romans came, we also find a sprinkling of Celtic place names.
Thank you for your response. I'm looking forward to your take on the final film.

Just a quickie note aboht the literature. Prof. Tolkein was a literary genius of the first water. He was a prof of linguistics and literature at Oxford University. His specially noteworthy academic works were in the epics of the Saxons. His translation of Beowulf is considered one of the most definitive. Interestingly, the culture of Rohan is an almost perfect recreation of a Saxon nation. The golden hall of Meduseld takes after many of the architectural features of a Saxon great mead-hall. The funeral lament that Eowyn sings is actual old English dialect standing in for what Tolkein called ancient Rohirric.

It's always such a joy to watch another person falling love with Lotr because these movies are masterpieces in every way, and seeing your passion is a lot of fun. Cannot wait for the return of the king reaction!
I've heard that when Tolkien tried to publish Lotr it wasn't deemed as a very attractive story that many people would like, I mean Tolkien basically created the fantasy genre so it wasn't a popular thing back then, and I believe it took a good while until people started to appreciate them. I don't know if Tolkien himself ever got to know how big of a difference he made in this world

Incase you were wondering about Aragorn’s age, he’s so long lived because he descends from half-elves. (from Elros, Elrond’s brother in fact)
Half-elves who fought in a past war against Morgoth (Sauron’s previous master) were rewarded by the gods with the choice to be counted among men or elves, the men were still gifted with long lives and given the island of Numenor. The last king of Numenor was corrupted by Sauron and convinced to attack Aman (the continent where the gods reside) This resulted in Aman being removed from the world and Numenor being sunk into the sea. Aragorn’s most recent Numenorean ancestor was Isildur, one of the Numenoreans who escaped the sinking of Numenor and took refuge in Middle Earth. (I.e. the guy who cut the ring from Sauron’s hand)

    • @papalaz4444244
      @papalaz4444244 Před 2 lety +1

No, this is not correct. he is a Numenorean and therefor human, and has no Elvish blood. He did LIVE with Elrond and Elros in Rivendell, as a child.
"Aragorn was the son of Arathorn II and his wife Gilraen. Through his distant ancestors Isildur and Anarion, the sons of Elendil, whom he closely resembled, he was directly in line for the thrones of both Gondor and Arnor."

    • @Dan-B
      @Dan-B Před 2 lety +1

@@papalaz4444244 I never said that he wasn’t of the race of men.
It is correct. He’s a direct descendant of Elros, who was the first king of Numenor.
The Elves you’re thinking of that Aragorn spent time with in Rivendell is Elrond’s sons Elladan and Elrohir, Elros wasn’t alive at the same time as Aragorn. (Elros died in the second age, Aragorn wasn’t born till the third age)

I don't think my post is going to spoil anything so I can tell you this: Aragorn is not a regular human, that's why he looks so young for an 87 year old men. But still he is mortal he just lives longer. It has to do with his lineage.

  • @Kolious_Thrace
    @Kolious_Thrace Před 2 lety +4

Aragorn’s age is 87 and yet he looks young.
Aragorn, heir of Isildur, Isildur and the rest of his line were from the Kings of Numenor.
Even though they were Men they were blessed with longevity.
He would eventually die but not as normal humans around the age of 70-80.
He could live until his 150-200.
Now, how to explain the fact about the ships and the departure of the Elves?!?! 🤔
Trying not to spoil anything I’ll try to explain some of the lore.
Elrond was so anxious to convince Arwen to go with the rest of the Elves because the Elver started to prepare for leaving the Middle Earth.
According to the lore, West of the Middle Earth were the Undying Lands known as the Valinor.
After some veryyyy important events, ages before the facts of the Lord of the Rings, the world was split.
The Middle Earth was where it is and the West, the Undying Lands were separated from the Arda-the cosmos, the rest of the planet.
Some Elves stayed at Valinor (West/Undying Lands) and some were stuck in Middle Earth, where after Sauron’s downfall and by using their Rinds and their magic they kept their kingdoms untouched.
When Elrond and Galadriel said that the time of the Elves is over it’s like… we are done, we cannot live anymore here.
Darkness is spreading, our Rings are dying… we cannot stay here anymore.
The Valar (deities/Minor Gods) gave to the Elves of Middle Earth the opportunity to leave and form to the Undying Lands by sailing from a place/port called Grey Heavens, and by sailing to one specific direction they could ‘’magically’’ leave this world and go to Valinor which was away of this planet.
After centuries and millennia the world will die eventually.
The spirits of the Elves had the opportunity to leave for the eternity into Valinor, the gracious kingdom of the Valar, when the spirits of Men and Dwarves and the rest of the creatures in Middle Earth was not certain!!!
If Arwen chooses to renounce her immortality and live like human that means that her spirit couldn’t go into Valinor with the rest of her family but it will go when the Men’s spirits are going.
That’s why Elrond wanted her to leave Middle Earth and sail to Valinor before the Middle Earth was destroyed.
Because he wanted her spirit to be able to join the rest of the Elves at the Undying Lands and live there forever even after the End of the world.
Now that she wants go give up her immortality it doesn’t mean that she just gonna die like a human but later, her spirits would not be able to join the rest of the Elves at the Undying Lands.

When you learn about Elrond and his brother Elros, his pain concerning his daughter's decision become so much more poignant. Elrond and Elros are both half-elves, and half-elves are able to choose to be either human (and mortal) or elf (and immortal). Elros chose to be Human and founded the line of Numenorians - great, powerful, giants of men. Isiludur was a Numenorian and thus a descendant (several generations down) from Elros. Thus Aragorn is VERY VERY distantly related to Elrond (through thousands of years) via Elros. Elrond had to watch his brother and many, many of his decedents (62 generations) die of old age only to see his daughter make that same choice.

In the books, Tolkien explains that when Daramir was born, Denthor's beloved wife died in or very shortly after giving birth. Grief struck, Denethor's wisdom failed and he began to use the Stone ( Palantir) that was kept in Minas Tirith, securely locked away. And soon enough Sauron, (Who had the Chief Stone, taken from ruined Osgiliath) although unable to make the Stones lie outright, showed Denethor the worst aspects, until Denethor's mind began to break from despair.

These are my favorite movies, and I have very few complaints about them. But probably my biggest one is that they didn’t do anything to explain Denethor‘s story at all. He was made out as a horrible person. And no reason was given for his attitudes and actions. I am not a big fan of the character, even in the books. But I do think that there is something to say, for the fact that he never turned to Sauron, as Saruman did under the influence of the Palantir. I think they could have made his character a little more complex and understandable in the films without too much extra effort or time.

Can never get enough of these movies, my friends and I just had an extended edition marathon last weekend, started in the morning and finished up around 10pm. They are as perfect an adaptation of a book to movie as you can get. Yes they're changes, but most of them make sense to streamline the movies, have this character do or say this instead of introducing another. Even the biggest change, Elves are Helms Deep, I can get behind because it keeps with the theme and I feel Tolkien would have approved.
Fun fact, Christopber Lee is the only one from the movies to meet Tolkien in real life. He was an avid fan after reading LOTR when it was first printed.
Tolkien hated allegory in stories, which always annoyed him about his friend's writing, C.S. Lewis. I think the fact that he tried to not make any direct allegory but still kept his themes is what make LOTR relatable to so many from so many different walks of life.

Boromir has always been my favourite character in these films. It was frustrating to hear you talk so negatively of him in the first reaction, but only because you hadn't seen his scene in this film yet. Boromir was corrupted by the ring, as most men would be (men being weak willed to the power of the ring.) But Boromir never wanted it for himself, unlike Gollum or Isildur. He always wanted it for his father, for his people. He only ever wanted it to defend his people, something he says multiple times in Fellowship but is shown again here. We also see in this scene how he has been fighting on the frontlines of the war and how desperate his people are. I think it really shows how strong he is as a character, but also helps show how misunderstood he is. It looks like greed but it's more desperation and truly a desire to do good for his people.

22:13 Frodo is holding the most evil thing in existence, he holds the essence of Sauron (synonymous for Satan) with him. Galadriel said, "this task was appointed to you Frodo ... if you do not find a way, no one will." It's one of the thing that isn't as obvious at the first viewing of the trilogy, but to me it made the whole trilogy much better when I truly recognized the symbology of Frodo and the ring and how insanely impossible task it really is that he is partaking.

FWIW in the books Faramir is far more diplomatic and helpful to Frodo and Sam. After a brief interrogation he’s super kind. And when he learns Frodo has the ring he’s not tempted for a moment, he fully understands the need to destroy it. He’s that honorable. But I can see the argument, that the movies stress the ring’s corrupting influence so much it would be discordant to have Dudley Do-Right effortlessly resist it in the middle of all the building tension.

Latin is NOT the source of every language. Their are language branches and in Europe you will find Germanic, Celtic, Slavic, Helenic, the Indo European language branches and then there are the Finnic and Estonian which are there own language family. And of course there were various Italic languages (which are Indo European) which were extinguished by their fellow, Latin which gave rise to Romance languages like Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian. Only these last are derived from Latin and as such are classified as the Romance languages. Then there is French which is, cotrary to popular opinion, not so much a Romance language as it was originally a creole of 30% each of Germanic, Celtic and Latin.

Speaking of this in theaters, my local Alamo Drafthouse theater is playing these, one a week, starting next Monday night. Extended versions. With a Q&A. I’m kind of divided, I don’t particularly want to spend 5 hours til midnight in a theater during the workweek with a bunch of people who probably have Omicron. But I’d hate to miss it.

As much as you enjoyed the dialogue and talked about reading the books someday, I would highly recommend the audiobooks. You can listen to them without having to sit down and be totally engrossed in reading a book. The actor who played Gollum, Andy Serkis has recorded a new set of the books this past year. And they are really a great listen. I would add that the first book takes a little while to get going. There is quite a bit of story that happens before Frodo starts out on his journey. I just think that is a good thing to know in advance for people who don’t know the story and might have trouble getting into it in the beginning. Once Frodo and the rest take off and start the journey, especially after they meet up with Aragorn, the story really picks up.

Like you will find in any book vs the movie adapted from them, there is much much more lore and detail within the books pages than will be on the screen. There's are characters in the book that don't even make an appearance in the movie. Although I love the movie, there were more changes made from the book than a lot of people realize. Aragorn is portrayed much differently in the movie than in the book. There's a real lack of the amount of time that passes between events in the movie. In the book, you see that this happened over a much great time span. The good thing is, I don't really have to choose one over the other, I can enjoy both, and do. Most of the changes Jackson made for the movie I understand, and I'm not mad at him.

Latin are not the source of every modern language, if that's what you meant. Latin has many roots in the Ancient Greek language which came before latin. Both languages are based on the Proto-Indo-European language. At least that's what the theorists say.
You should definitely get into Tolkien's books. A lot of your questions will be answered. DON'T read people's comments because they will spoil the books. Even if the story is pretty much the same, there is a wealth of material that you will not find in any adaptation.
Reading the books will answer the question of why the Elves are leaving Middle Earth. But there are multiple reasons and different perspectives. The reasons can be either fantastical, literal, in lore-based, or even historical, and/or romantic. Tolkien once joked about Middle Earth being Europe thousand years before modern times, so one reason is this: The Elves are leaving because the End of LotR marks the end of Fairy Tales. It will be said in the 3rd movie that "the time for the dominion of Men has come". Another reason, the historical one, is because the Elves are not originally from Middle Earth (excerpt for some tribes), but from another continent called Valinor. Imagine Valinor as Olympus, the place where the Gods of Middle earth recide. Thousands of years before the events of LotR, the Elves left Valinor to wage War on Morgoth (he's basically the Satan of Middle Earth), so by the time of the end of LotR, they have no reason to remain on Middle Earth.
Hopefully some of my info will help you understand some things better. I will say it again, you must read the books!
    Have a great day!

I dislike the oversimplification the film instills. Denethor just telling Boromir to go to Rivendell to get the Ring. First Rivendell is a secret hold out. Denethors knowledge was more like a vague legend that somewhere in the North West there is this place but no one knows qhere it is precisely and maybe its not even real for all he knows. In truth he sent Boromir up into Eriador with the faintest idea of where he ought to look and by Providence he just happens to stumble across it. Denethor also didnt know about the Ring, Boromir only learns this at the council.

Latin is not the root of every language; LOTR is a Germanic epic, taking inspiration from Der Ring Des Nibelungen, Beowulf, and Norse Mythology. English and Old English are part of the Proto-Germanic language tree. Southern Europeans have a different history and culture then the Germanic race.

Just a tip: you don't even need to do recaps for a part II of the same movie, bruv. Just get right into it. @@CinemaWithH yeah definitly recomend reading or listening to the books (its free on Spotify🤫) and even if you dont listen to the whole thing listen to the chapter where Faramir and the hobbits meet and discuss everything in the cave. Tolkein wrote their family so well, Faramir is the person all humans wish to be, Boramir is the person we are and Denethor (their father) as the person we fear to become. Anyway, great reaction can’t wait for Return of the King.
