Letting bill go is actually not that great a thing, I think because they are hunted by wolfs or orcs. And doesn't the watcher in the water get him or are they afraid the watcher ate bill? Also bill doesn't want to leave because they buy him in bree and he's used and abused but he starts cheering up and doing better the longer he is with sam. So letting him go was a real letdown in the books I think.

The one ring's invisibility is a bit confusing. In the Hobbit, which was written first, it was only intended as a ring of invisibility. It wasn't until Tolkien conceived of the story of LOTR that he decided to change it to the "one ring" hence the roundabout explanation for its effects.

Towards the end you said it would have been more realistic if some of the main characters didn’t make it. And that would be more realistic for a modern tale. But Tolkien was wanting to write an epic saga of the type that he was inspired by. So in that regards I don’t think it was unrealistic for his heroes to prevail against all odds. Gollum was essential to the story as no one could have willingly stood at the edge of Mount Doom and cast the Ring into the volcano. And as Gandalf said early on, he felt that Gollum had a part to play. As important aspect of the story is showing mercy. As it was the mercy of both Bilbo and Frodo that resulted in Gollum being there at the right moment. Gandalf cautioned Frodo not to be too quick to deal out death and judgment, as some who die deserve life. So much of this was influenced by Tolkien’s own experience with war. I was surprised that you skipped over the ending scenes with Frodo selling off with Gandalf and the elves. In this respect Frodo is similar to someone with PTSD. He was too wounded, both physically and mentally by his experiences on the journey, and with the ring. As he tells Sam, they set out to save the Shire. But he was unable to enjoy the results of that victory. So he was sailing off to the Undying Lands, where he could find peace and healing. Lots of first time viewers, especially if this is your introduction to the story, are confused by Frodo’s departure at the end.

As much as you enjoyed the dialogue and talked about reading the books someday, I would highly recommend the audiobooks. You can listen to them without having to sit down and be totally engrossed in reading a book. The actor who played Gollum, Andy Serkis has recorded a new set of the books this past year. And they are really a great listen. I would add that the first book takes a little while to get going. There is quite a bit of story that happens before Frodo starts out on his journey. I just think that is a good thing to know in advance for people who don’t know the story and might have trouble getting into it in the beginning. Once Frodo and the rest take off and start the journey, especially after they meet up with Aragorn, the story really picks up.

I know this video is already a year old, but I wanted to make a couple of observations. You were correct when you said that the Elf was dealing better with the snow. I think that Peter Jackson did an excellent job of portraying how different elves are from men in many subtle details with Legolas. While the others were struggling with the snow on the mountain path, Legolas was walking lightly on top of the snow. One of my favorite of these details was the look of sheer terror on Legolas’ face when Gandalf says that the creature approaching them was a Balrog. Legolas would have understood how formidable this was better than any one else in their group besides Gandalf, as the Elves had battled Balrogs in ancient times. While the Elves are considered immortal they can be slain in battle, but death is much more of a mystery for them. I think this was another example of how Jackson showed that the Elves are different. After Gandalf falls and everyone is so emotional right outside of the mine, Legalos just looks confused. And when he comes upon the dying Boromir with Aragorn, Legalos looks on wistfully and unsure of how to react. These are just a few examples in this particular film. But you can probably do the same kind of analysis with many of the characters, where very subtle gestures, expressions, and other little details, communicated so much about their characters and how they were reacting to what was happening at that particular time. I love to watch reactions to Lord of the Rings, as it is always fun to see people being exposed to these films for the first time. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone that wasn’t extremely impressed with the story and so many aspects of the movie in general.

The White Wizard has traditionally headed the White Order. Saruman's betrayal has changed thing. In the books he's supplanted by Gandalf and Saruman becomes 'Saruman of Many Colours'. :)

The person telling you about the ring is wrong, with regards the lore. The ring has the effect, when worn, of making ordinary people invisible. You don't enter a shadow realm, even though the films give that impression. More powerful people, wizards, elf lords, even some men descended from the noble line of the ancient race of 'high men', (Numenoreans) would be able to access more of it's power. Wizards like Gandalf and Saruman would probably become as , or even more, powerful than Sauron. Unfortunately the ring corrupts and the more frequently it's powers, including invisibility, are used, the faster the corruption occurs. Now that Sauron has returned, the corruption is even faster and more virulent. The closer the ring comes to Saron's seat of power, the heavier the burden too. The Nazgul are ringwraiths, once the 9 human rulers, whom Sauron now controls. They're like an extension of himself, so they increase the burden of the ring when close. Most people would, through bearing the ring, would become ringwraiths, under Sauron's control. Resistance to the process would depend upon race, character, willpower and how often the ring was worn/used. Extremely powerful people, like Saruman, Galadriel and Gandalf would instead become dark lords themselves. Frodo has become even more susceptible, as he was stabbed by a 'Morgul Blade', by the Lord of the Nazgul, whilst wearing the ring. The only person who can wield the Ring without it changing them, is Sauron. He placed much of his power in the Ring. Without it he's the most powerful being in Middle Earth. With it he'd be unstoppable, as the power of elves is declining and they're gradually leaving, the dwarves too are less numerous and less powerful and men are seen as weak, disunited and of 'lesser stock' than previously.

The next most powerful rings were the 3 Elven rings. At this time the bearers were Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf, even though the latter is not an elf, (more akin to a demigod).

Tolkien started writing the Lord of the Rings in the late 1930s and 'The Hobbit', set in the same world, was even earlier and much of it is inspired by ancient European myth and legend, particularly British, so I think it's safe to assume that if there was any inspiration, it was anime being inspired by the LOTR, not the other way around... ;) :)

So many people misunderstand the "Yeah...Doss...The coward.." line. He's saying it sarcastically, like they all called him a coward and thought he was one, then in that moment he's like "Ha...Yeah..The coward..." knowing full well he was completely wrong about him.

I've seen this movie at least once a year for 20 years and Boromir's death still makes me tear up.

When you have a real relationship with the Lord through Jesus Christ and know he's able it makes it easier. Religion doesn't save but Jesus does. Jesus said yes must be Born again.
