Here it is!
I've been planning this video for over half a year now, without any footage whatsoever. This is truly just their song and I couldn't wait to edit it. These two have such an interesting hero-villain dynamic that I was really excited to see play out on screen.
Sorry not sorry for this being my third video in less than 24 hours. I have more on the way, but tomorrow. I'm trying to space the rest out a little bit more... (Yes, you can expect Kanej tomorrow. They're my favourite; I hope to do them justice.)

Yeah, me too. For me the ending in the books is too... simplistic/unrealistic? It's the ending from a fairy tale "and they lived happily ever after" with (SPOILER!)
a childhood friend for goodness sake. Without power. And suddenly after those experiences they were the same and they didn't need anything but each other... OK wonderful... but people change and "each of us has a Heaven and Hell in them". Life and people are more complex, we love, we hate, desire, hurt one another, we betray, we change for the better or for worse... And how about redemption? The Darkling lived hundreds of years, experienced so much... His relationship with Alina could have taken also hundreds of years... evolving... In the TV show "Vampire Diaries" those relationships took some years at least! And the TV series was also different than the book. So I hope that they will write an alternative ending.

This is a cinematic masterpiece, I'm trying so hard not to ship them but it is truly impossible, the chemistry between them was incredible in the books but the series really went above and beyond. Although they fixed a lot of the faults in Mal's character and they gave him a bit more personality, i still don't like him nearly as much as the darkling
Does the book have (more) good Darklina scenes? Because I'm craving for more Darklina and I don't think we'll ever get more of it on the show so I'm thinking of switching to the books 😅 like, do they just kiss once, is she always thinking about Mal, is there more... @@s.b.5747 There are actually more scenes between her and the darkling in the books and since it's written in Alina's perspective we get to see exactly what she's feeling for the darkling. I definitely think it's worth reading, especially if you liked the series. If you decide to give it a go let me know if you like them

@@s.b.5747 They have a bit more scenes but the Darkling is definitely different in the books, definitely more cold and angry at himself for what he feels for Alina while I feel Ben Barnes’s Darkling is enjoying his feelings in the show haha (still love it but it’s just different, he brought more humanity to the character)
(And personably my favorites scenes are from book 3 so definitely worth the read)

Honestly I think he’s a total psycho path but like I can’t help but ship them. It’s kinda like a Damon and Elena thing where he’s a total psycho but for some reason we all love him and want them together. Also I think he’s genuinely in love with her.
I ship Delena from season 1 even Elena love Stefan, damon love her so much, do everything to protect her, I thinks the darkling too, I still hope Darklina is endgame and still hope Netflix don't follow the books.

i really think that he genuinely was falling for her. they are polar opposites, soulmates. he was afraid to lose her so he trapped her. i think they have so much potential in the show and the chemistry is AMAZING. I really think with enough time Alina can make him see the good again.
She’s light, he is dark. No better match than that.
After that monologue he had with Mal, I can’t help but root for Aleksander to change. He’s right. Alina is about to live in immortality and Mal will grow old. She will have centuries to live and so will the Darkling. They can become the power couple we all wish for them to be. They can fix things together because they have so much time to do it.
that's one reason to not ship Mal. The stronger reason, for me anyway, is that he grew up with Alina and they were each other's family. I can see the kindred spirits angle, but the brother/sister relationship dynamic is too much

How can anyone deny them??? All these anti-darklinas surely failed their chemistry tests.
Honestly the way I see it, Alek does bad things for good reasons and Alina is too naive to understand that the world isn’t black and white and sometimes doing the wrong thing for the right reasons is the best we can do. And honestly even with all the changes to Mal’s character, I can’t stop thinking about how terrible he is to her in the books.
And she goes on and on about how evil he is, but I don't see her even trying to come up with a different solution with him.

Murdering her childhood caretaker isn't doing things for good reasons. He's spent the whole book series trying to isolate her from anything beyond his control. He believed her to be the only one who can truly one day understand him and live life with him but that doesn't excuse greed and honestly stupidity in some cases.
I'm very glad the show is trying to make him more of a good guy that we can want redeemed.
@@Cybele09 honestly I don’t even consider the books at this point because Leigh never really developed any of her characters outside of their simplified roles - Alina as the main heroine where things just magically work out for her, Alek as the bad guy who doesn’t have a plan if he wins because he’s just evil, Mal as the self centered best friend, Nikolai as the handsome prince, etc.
@@Cybele09 how is he any different from Klaus from TVD and the originals though? They’re literally the same except klaus got redeemed. Literally so many other villains that are similar to the darkling are praised and loved and so many people say the darkling is past the point of redemption and I don’t understand how?

I hate him, but I love him at the same time. I hate him for what he did, but I can't stop loving him. Guess this is just another confirmation that I'm attracted to the the broken and misunderstood villains.

I think alina is good for the Darkling, her light and goodness would balance out his “darkness”. Also the show displays a different side of the darkling, while in the books he created the fold out of greed, in the show he did it to protect his people, while a lot of his action are still questionable, i think he can be redeemable.
In the books he didn’t do that out of greed it’s Baghra’s point if view.
In fact he became too pride because he was convinced all his life that he was unique and the only one able to save Ravka and the grishas.
It’s « greed » towards his own confidence in his powers and in merzost, but his goal was to protect Ravka and I mean, it was not a bad plan

Everyone blames The Darkling for being evil, especially Alina, but he was doing the only thing he could to keep the Grisha safe. And for all Alina's ✨goodness✨ she craved power, just as much as he did, and with 5 centuries of being hunted and losing everyone you love I have no doubt she'd turn out exactly like he did. And never once did I ever see Alina trying to help The Darkling come up with another solution.
The TV show made her seem even more "good"
In the books she legit abandons the Skiff filled with people to become snacks for the volcra at the end. While she selfishly runs away with Mal.
and lets not forget how she intentionally forced all her cartographer friends to be on the skiff in episode 1 by burning the maps just because she wanted to be near mal.
Love, hunter, friend, and enemy. He truly is every one of them to Alina
The sad moment when you've read all the books but still want a Darklina endgame, but you know that it won't happen. Alina and The Darkling are equals, two sides of the same coin.

Ben Barnes has made people fall in love with this character. If they allow him to humanize Darkling just a tad bit more, people will have no choice but to support his character. You do not sign an actor of his experience only to kill him off in the end. You just do not.

I'm all for Darklina, yet I can't help but be overwhelmed by the letters Mal and Alina wrote to each other, such raw emotions. It's like they don't need to kiss or confess, those letters are enough and I'm annoyed. I want Darklina.
And then I thought what if it's Malina endgame and I'm like "no Man, sit down, Darklina forever, period."
Yes, the letters were beautiful and it was saying eventing but when it comes to seeing it.... I don't see it. The actors don't have the chemistry. I think they focused too much on her chemistry with the Darkling.

I think explosive is a really good word for their chemistry. It burns hot and bright and fast, but quickly gives way to darkness and ash. Imo, mal and Alina's chemistry is like a fire, burning steady and long. I prefer Malina so much more than darklina the way the show and books are written (plz no spoilers for the sequels) but if the darkling's character had taken a different turn, had he really been a descendant of the original darkling and striving to be the one to fix the mistakes of his ancestors, I would have wildly preferred darklina
idk those two gave off brother and sister vibes. Especially after all the meadow scenes showing they grew up under the same roof, I can see protective older brother and little sister, not lovers.
Why can't I hate Ben Barnes even if he played as antagonist in The Punisher (as Billy Russo) and in Shadow and Bone (as my love, err as Gen Kirigan). He's just so handsome - face and gestures. And such a gentleman, too :)

Malina in great but Darklina... My God, the chemistry! I like Malina but they just seem one of those usual TV show couple that takes forever to kiss and then always has some kind of drama... When watching the show, I can feel disappointment from both Darkling and Alina. Like they held high expectation about the other but get let down later. Would love to see they reach full understanding between themselves or compromise like what we have in Hannibal. Can you imagine Darklina being a powerful villain couple? Like please do that Netflix.

I love the spark and chemistry between them. I can't see her with mal. They are made for each other 💗💗 but his character is negative so, I know they can't be together but they are best always 💗💗
okay, but hear me out. i don't think that Netflix are going to change the ending, sadly. but the only thing I'm asking for is when they kiss in the end of the second season, if it's going to go like in the books, i want to see what would have happened if their relationship worked out, even a little sneak peak, i think that would be such a genius idea, because we know what happens after the kiss... and maybe in the following season number three, every time she remembers his words such as "no on like us", and e.t.c., she would have a flashback to that alternative ending.

Tell me about that Book 2 kiss. :-) I am not planning to read the books because I have read book 1 the same evening I saw the first episode and I didn't like it very much compared to the show (which is SO rare). I know it was the author's first published work, so she probably got better with each, but I do not see myself reading them, at least for now. So. The kiss. I need to know. :-)
@@helenvader actually the tv show is indeed better than the book(the original trilogy shadow and bone ), this is a very popular opinion. Now the spin off duology " six of crows"(story of jasper, inej, kaz and wylan) is soo awesome, Leigh's writing improved a lot, I recommend you to read just the duology

I hated when she started to tell everyone how bad Darkling is, and nobody knows him better than she does. Hello girl, how much time have you spent with him to say something like that. You didn't even bother to use your brain and critical thinking to find out if Bagra was telling the truth or her own narrowed version of the truth. I stopped to read at the third one. The second one was the most boring, whole book she is flirting with that strange prince, mal and thinking how bad Darkling is, same time she is thinking how handsome he is and so on. And when she wanted to lead an army I was laughing so much. Alina, with her chicken brain and a general? You must be kidding. And yes, not in a moment I saw her so called lightiness in the books. She is really not a saint person like she wants to look like. The Darklings motives were clear and understandble, and his behaviour as well, because he is not a teenager to chase after a girl, he is several hundreds years old, and won't forget his plans just to please a stupid teenager. I really don't get why he did fall in love with her in the first place?

The air was ashy, breathing was becoming inexorably difficult. My lungs were filling with dirt and the noises all around me sounded muffed from the explosions. My sight was becoming blurred and everything looked incredibly slow as if I were looking through a window at someone else’s life. I looked around me: the Crows were holding themselves together, Inej standing in front of Kaz, her eyes wide with surprise and fear. Kaz was on his back, I couldn’t tell if he was injured from here. Jesper was kneeling next to him trying to say something in his ear but he didn’t seem to be paying attention. All his focus seemed to be on the scene before him: Aleksander was in a cloud of night trying to fight off the king’s army on one side and rogue soldiers from Fjerda on the other. He was on his knees, a streak of pain colouring his face, blood rippling from his torso, ruining his uniform and painting the dirt on the ground.
My hearing was starting to come back slowly, I turned to my right where few meters away was his majesty’s army. The General was shouting at me, it took a few seconds to register what he was saying - kill him! - his voice scary as he growled at me like a mad dog. I looked into his eyes and I saw it: just pure hate, for who I was, for my abilities. Hate for something I didn’t choose, hate because I was different from them, more powerful. I never given them any reason to be afraid of me, till a few months ago I didn’t even know what I was. But none of it seemed to matter, they still hated me just like they hated Aleksander and I hadn’t even striked back at them. In my mind came back the memories of Aleksander’s past, not the story they taught in their books about the Black Heretic but what had really happened. - I didn’t know what to do… I was just a boy back then trying to learn to control my power - his gaze was fixed on a distant point in the room but I knew he was actually lost in thought - Me and my mother spent months at a time running and hiding, until one day the guards captured us. I was threatened that they would kill my mother if I didn’t do what the king asked, he wanted me to fight for him. He wanted me to round up others like me and win a war for him and we did. You know how history says that I became greedy and insatiable with power? Do you know what had actually happened? The same night we won all my people were sleeping in the barracks and he sent soldiers for a coup: they killed everyone inside. I wasn’t there, I went to break my mother free of the dungeons but I heard it: high pitched screams like the crackling of fire. By the time we had come out the barracks were burning to ash. I spent the next twenty years running away and hiding my people - I looked at him, he seemed suddenly so young and so old at the same time. The weight of his words and the memories were showing on his face giving away a truer idea of his real age. But his eyes when he looked at me… he seemed what I would have imagined a frightened ten-year-old Aleksander to look like. A confused child whose life had been stolen from him, a child who was victim of circumstances he didn’t choose. I remembered when he brought me to the fountain saying how he had always made a wish that he could be anyone else, he hadn’t lied about that.
Mal shook me out of my thoughts, I turned to him. He was covered in dirt and was pointing his finger towards were I knew Aleksander was struggling. I turned my gaze and saw him fighting to not fall on the ground. One hand was keeping his weight from collapsing, the other was erecting a wall of shadow trying to keep off spears and bullets. As if he felt my eyes on him he turned his head and looked at me and I saw it all over again: a scared boy, confused as to why he had been hunted down his entire life just for being different. I looked over the army again and I rose to my feet. Mal tried to grab my arm but I shook him off - Alina, what are you - I didn’t give him time to finish - I am going to help him - Mal’s gaze looked as confused as if I were speaking some ancient language he could not understand. - What do you think will happen once I help them kill him? What do you think they will do to me? - I pointed a finger at the army with rage. - I am the same thing as he is to them: a threat, an annoyance, a bug on their shoulder jeopardizing their power. The only reason I am still breathing right now is because they think they need me to kill Aleksander. As soon as he drops to the ground they will turn against me as quickly as they once considered me an ally. I will need to spend the rest of my existence running and hiding, fighting for my life. Fighting to not be killed or captured and sold off. And Mal, eternity is a very long time to be afraid - I didn’t wait for his reply, I didn’t even look back at him. I didn’t want to look or I might have changed my mind. I started running towards Aleksander.

If this isn’t endgame I’m gonna Sue! Their chemistry is 🔥🔥 if the shows writers and netflix don’t go there they might as well basically ruin the show. You have your leading lady and leading man right there.
one thing is for sure, no one will remember the show if it ends without a Darkling redemption arc...he has already made such an impact in 1 season that if they try to undermine his character going forward and try to make him a cold villain with no hope of redemption, it will really turn fans off.
