  • The Crucible is the final challenge in the US Marines bootcamp that recruits must complete in order to become a Marine. It’s is the culmination of 12 weeks of physical, marksmanship, firing range, and combat water survival training over 12 weeks. The Crucible consists of drills and training with 60 lbs. of gear over 48 miles within 54 hours, given only two meals and six hours total of sleep. It’s a brutal mental and physical challenge that marks a young man’s transformation into a Marine.
As part of the Midwest Marines Educator Workshop in February, WGN Radio was given rare, unbridled access to the emotional Eagle, Globe and Anchor pinning ceremony atop the Reaper, the steep 700 ft-tall mountain that signifies the accomplishment of the Crucible.

As soon as my kill hat stepped in front of me to hand me my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, my lip was already quivering so I'm sure I looked like a dumbass and he started stifling a laugh so we both stood there and tried to hold our bearing, he handed it to me, and while smiling said, "I still hate you" and stepped off

Yuqi Bai damn right, lol. I was so hungry and our Drill Instructors said eat up. At that time we still only got our Tan MCMAP belts on top of the Reaper back in '01. We didn't get our EGA till family day, which was great, as it was in front of my wife and youngest child. I do like the fact that they changed it so these recruits get it at the top of the Reaper, it makes them feel more accomplished and get a little extra time with the DIs as Marines themselves.
Anyway, our kill hat got us back after the warrior breakfast and quarterdecked us until some of us threw our breakfast back up. It was glorious, I tell ya!
It is mighty cool that they changed it to the same a Paris Island after the crucible.

With respect, in WWII, most Marines were not drafted. Draftees in the USMC during WWII were looked down on until they proved themselves. Marines are a different breed. Much of the ethos of the Corps is instilled during Boot Camp and then are solidified by the Crucible. The value of the EGA, that it is EARNED, is exemplified by the struggle of the Crucible. The Marines hymn makes me cry. Especially the streets are guarded by the marines.

My company and I became marines on 10/31/2013. We went tricker treating for EGAs on top of that very hill. It’s a memory I cannot forget

That is a great accomplishment, earning the Eagle, Globe and Anchor, and being called, Marine. When I went thru Marine bootcamp in 1986 we didn’t have the Crucible though.

I don't know what it is to be a U.S. Marine and odds are, I never will. Up until the day I got my black belt in American Kenpo Karate, I never understood the value of true hard work. The night I got my black belt, it finally dawned to me, it hit me like a brick and I couldn't hold back that tingling going down my spine as I reflected at home with my black belt in hand holding it like a new born baby. I wonder sometimes if it is the same thing for a Marine.

All that hard work it took to earn the title gets to you the day you are first called a Marine. They didn't call us Marines until graduation day. It was something to OOH-Rah about! You made, you earned the title. The pride can overcome you. I didn't cry but I was flying high. I view earning the title as my greatest achievement in life, even higher than graduating from college.

Watching this video brings me chills. I just graduated boot camp Friday 28062019. The crucible WILL murder your feet, let me say that. I couldn't be more proud of myself for making it through the 13 weeks of hell. Currently enjoying my 10 day leave before I go to Camp Pendleton for ITB. Oh and I forgot to add, the zombie walk back to the squad bay sucked so bad. All we were all thinking about was that warriors breakfast and boy did we enjoy it. 2nd Batallion Fox Company PLT 2122.

US Marines are bad ass. The best fighting force in the world. Period. I wish I was a Marine, instead, all I could do is transport them to the fight. Hoorah Marines!!!

I get a little tear in my eye watching these. I can’t imagine the feeling of actually holding that after 13 weeks & 54 hours of little sleep. I just found out a day or so ago from a long time customer that her son is starting The Crucible. I hope I get the chance to see him after graduation.
