2014 Kia Forte shake, rattle and stall- Diagnosing stalling issue

  • This 2014 Kia Forte has a 1.8l engine that has port injection and dual VVT. I checked the entire computer system for codes and found no codes. I also checked oil level and although is was dark reddish/brown in color the level was OK. During the first test drive I thought the engine was pinging (detonation) right before it stalled. I chased this lead for a while which included logging data during the event and checking fuel pressure. All looked good and no major problems were noticed. It wasn't until a second test drive with different data being logged that I noticed the noise and stall would happen right after the exhaust VVT was commanded by the ECM while at low engine speeds. After finding out what the issue is I needed to find out why and how. That is where the video takes place.
    I have a hard time believing that I was able to double the oil pressure by changing the oil and filter but I will remember this in the future.

    Hello👋
    I just wanted to say THANK YOU For this video. I took my 2015 Forte to Kia 3 times for a rattling sound and stalling issues. They were never able to find anything after numerous times of me telling them that my vehicle was not safe to drive. They even said that the rattling was normal because the car was cold. I eventually brought it back home and bought the oil filter you mention on this video, did a motor flush and changed out the oil. My car is back to normal doesn’t rattle or stall anymore. 🙌🏻 thank you!

    Very glad to find this video after checking dozens, thank you sir. I have a 2015 Sportage with 1.6 liter 136 HP GDI. It does not stall, but idles at 600 rpm and shakes too much. Rpm surges 1-2 times as I wait at the red lights, but it rides well. Dealer could not find anything, no codes nothing. Can it be the oil filter? UPDATE : I finally found the issue, the ignition coils were bad. They throw no codes, they were not totally broken, but it seems that they were not performing % 100. GDI engines are very sensitive for ignition, so if one of the coils go bad , you better replace them all. I hope this helps someone who has the same issue.

We took it out for a spin tonight and I noticed the pinging and then it died. EXACTLY the same issue. And, she needs an oil change. She is at about 5000 miles since the last change. Yikes! I hope it's not a bad engine! I just realized she commented yesterday!

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před 4 lety +1

      Hopefully the oil change will fix it. Any oil filter at this point will be better than the dirty on you have but if you have a local Kia/Hyundai dealer try and get a factory oil filter installed. An alternative would be the “Full” brand oil filter that you should be able to get from a Napa/Carquest/Advanced auto store but they may have order it in. The good filter is still only $5-8 depending on purchase location. You may also want to consider switching to 3000 mile intervals once you know for sure no permanent damage has occurred. Good luck!!

    • @atokarchik
      @atokarchik Před 4 lety +2

      It worked like a charm! Got the big filter from Napa, got one for my 2012 Kia too. I've never had it ping like that, but it's a standard so I generally have it revving higher at slow speeds. I think it works harder too, smaller engine.
      How did you figure it out? I would never have equated the timing advance to a drop in oil pressure, and I'm an engineer. You sir, are brilliant!

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před 5 lety +3

      Frank
      It took me a little while to duplicate the knocking indoors but if you can get it to act up while driving it might be worth at least slapping on a new cheap oil filter and see if the noise changes. A $4.00 oil filter is a cheap test. If you have a quality low pressure gauge you might see low oil pressure like I did. I could not pick it up on my 0-100psi analog gauge so I had to use the digital setup.
      The customer has not had any issues since and we just worked on their other vehicle last week so I’m they would have mentioned it. I think they got lucky and brought it in to the shop early enough to avoid major damage. One of my lube techs brought a napa filter over to me yesterday and let me know they changed manufacturers. They were using wix/affinia and now they are Mann/Hummel the filter is heavier and looks more like a factory filter. I hope this change in brands means better quality and a closer match to factory specs and operation.

    • @ThePracticalMechanic
      @ThePracticalMechanic  Před 3 lety +1

      You may have an engine that is worn out. The oil filters plug up with small metal shavings and hard oil deposits. Driving for long periods with a restricted oil filter causes accelerated wear and more particles. Changing the oil filter cannot restore the worn components back to new condition. It might be time for internal engine work or a new engine.

Flickering interior lights, flickering headlights, low idle that surges, i have the 1500 rpm range stall attempt as well. It just jumps rpms around though.... doesn't stall anymore. Wherever you got your last oil change done prob also put the wrong one on. I'd go to a Kia Dealership, get an oil change done, they'll put the right size one on, it's prob bigger than the one you got on now.

    Anyone know why my KIA Forte 2015 has the fuel injector under the intake manifold instead of on top like I see most on here?

      It’s possible that yours has direct injection. Look for a GDI badge on the car somewhere or on the engine cover or on the emission label under the hood.

    It disappoints me that people will spend more than $20K on an automobile, then neglect the single most important maintenance item; regular oil changes. "Pay me now or pay me later!"

      Absolutely Pauly D. Even at $50 per oil change they would have saved money.
