- I diagnose an engine noise on a 2012 Kia Forte with a 2.0L engine. After performing a spark plug inspection and a cylinder leakage test, I discovered leakage on #1 cylinder. Used inspection camera to find cylinder scoring on #1 and #4 cylinders. #1 cylinder being the worst and test results confirmed cylinder damage. It was determined that the engine noise is most likely related to cylinder and piston wear causing "piston slap". Customer declined repair do to parts availability.

I have what I think is the same engine, 2.0L Nu (non-turbo) in my 2023 Kia Soul LX. Since bought new last December it has always made a strange clatter noise only on cold start. The longer it takes to warm up the longer it takes for the clatter to abate. In Jersey winters where it can go down to 0°F in January, it clatters for a lot longer until it reaches op temp. Interestingly enough, when you first start it, there is no clatter while the ECU calls for a richer fuel mixture and the idle is high, as the idle speed comes down to 1k RPM you can then begin to hear the clatter which makes me think that this isn't an oil starvation issue. It will clatter until it gets nice and hot and then goes away. The recommended viscosity on this engine is 0W-20. As an experiment, in my last oil change I used 2 quarts of 0W-20 and 2 quarts of 0W-30. It helped to quiet it down a lot. I was taking it easy out on the road expecting a check engine light but seems like you can go heavier on the oil and maybe the engine can run a full 4 quarts on 0W-30 and might be made for that but to squeeze out an extra MPG or two at the expense of engine failure at 100k miles they say to use 0W-20. I can't experiment too much with it, car is under warranty and I keep all my oil receipts and a maintenance log as well as all the old oil filter boxes (OEM) and I even keep the old drain plug washer just in case I get accused of overtightening the bolt or not using a new washer at every oil change. Next oil change I will probably use 1 quart of 0W-30 and the rest 0W-20.
Working on a friend's 2012 2.0 Forte with an identical engine rattle. Pitch and intensity of the noise has not increased appreciably in some 7K miles since first noted. No metal in the oil and nothing in the pan when I dropped it. Cam and buckets are pristine and timing chain is tight for the miles (115K). Given the pattern issues of this vintage, I'm aligning with your piston slap diagnosis. I'll run the leakdown test next time I have hands on it...question is, how long will it remain drivable with continual oil changes?
Mine makes a roaring noise when I put the vehicle into gear after I first start the engine in the morning. It goes away in a few minutes when it warms up. Wondering if is a issue with the Transmission, not having any problems with the shifting or anything. Lost
Awesome video. These things are nothing but problems and headaches. The 1.8 and the 2.0 are both junk. I was about to ship my Elantra back to Korea chopped in half and let the factory have it back. POS. Subbed. Keep up the great content!
Thanks for watching. I appreciate thee feedback!!
Yes you have the good diagnostic for
Repair change base of motor garantee kia for 200000 km or 10 years here canada
This should be apart of the Kia engine recall campaigns for rod bearing failure.
Checked on recalls, TSBs, and campaigns. None applied to this vehicle. Thanks for watching!!
What size impact gun is that and what brand?
The one in the video is a Snap On, but that one had a battery fire and is now dead. I replaced it with the Milwaukee tool. It's actually a driver tool.
Model# 2401-22. So far I like the Milwaukee. I just wish the M12 batteries would stay in my rachets. The battery decides to just dislodge sometimes. Thanks for watching!!
Mine just die at 91 thousand miles, noises and codes started at 68 thousand miles. I bought the car with 39k miles. Kia Forte Koup 2013 2.0 6sp manual die, car is in the mechanic. If your Forte still good just sell the car save you a headache
Kia forte koup 1.6 2009 weird noise from engine started at 135.000 failed totally at 140.000km visited few mechanics here in south korea and each said scrap the car it aint worth the effort price for the replacement engine plus labour equaled to 60% value of the car itself. The rings on the cylinder get loose and they wreck havok within the engine block.
Can a the piston issue issue stop the car from starting?
no these are 4 piston engines, the car can run on three pistons, a lot slower and with earth quake vibration
Is it just me or do those piston crowns look pitted? Maybe detonation or something?
Pretty typical carbon build up, not as concerning as the cylinder walls though. Thanks for watching!!
I have the exact same car with 70,000 starting to get a louder tick. I hear many people saying their rod bearings are getting worn premature.
Yeah. These engines were not the best, that's for sure. Thanks for watching!!
Mine die with 91,000miles, got code cylinder 2 missfire, compression on cylinder 2 is 40. Good bye valves, now need timing chain and a lot. I'm selling the car i'm back to Honda
@@GarageVegaUS I still think a Toyota or a Honda is the way to go. Thanks for watching!!
170+ miles on my 2014 Kia Rio and no issues at all ...if you maintain them properly, frequent oil changes with synthetic oil, 5w20 and nothing else, OEM kia oil filter, you would have no issues. Noises could be the play in the bearing of the fuel pump (easy fix), yes piston slap, chain tensioner injectors (normal). But again it depends who had it before you and how they maintained it is key IMHO.
Mine just started this but it’s over 250k miles
I am about to by 2012 fort 2.0L engine
What do you advice 😅 me ?😊
Hope you bought it cheap and just let'r eat. Low expectations. Thanks for watching!!
Take care of it do the oil change at 6,000 miles
My 2011 2.0 with 86k miles sounds exactly the same. Ive noticed the noise is getting worse and worse. They are mainly highway miles. No oil will protect this engine. Been running Amsoil for years. 6AT is also junk. Very harsh shift between 2nd to 3rd gear. Kia vehicles are just junk. I may just keep it and run it till it dies and then deal with it after that. I just put almost 2,000 on tires, suspension parts, engine and trans mounts.... yikes
Definitely not built to last. You might as well drive into the ground because they really aren't worth anything. Thanks for watching!!
I have a 2017 Kia forte 2.0 making the same noise I’ve heard so many things
Hopefully it helped. Thanks for watching!!
Mine has that noice at almost 400k but only after a big deer. So no telling what it is.
😁😁😁
Well it’s called piston slap when the car gets old and has high mileage the piston and the cylinder gets worn out and the cylinder wall gets worn out it’s high tell tail the sign the engine is on its last legs
@charlieboy6885 sadly it wasn't doing that until after a deer hit it. Tore it up pretty bad got it put back together and catalytic converter went out and now this. It never had a sound she ran quiet, the only issue I ever had out of it before that was the alternators kept going bad.
Oil change and a bottle of lucus
Thanks for watching!!
Hmm, just bought 12 Forte that sounds just like this, everyone assured me it was "normal kia ticking" I'm pretty sure I got screwed over lol
Hopefully you got it cheap. Best of luck. Thanks for watching!!
@paycheckmonster unfortunately not. I actually used the last of my savings to buy it, it was $4,000
I'm just going to drive it until it has a catastrophic failure and keep my fingers crossed it'll last a while.
I have a 2012 with 270,000 miles no issues
@@CasualVox still going?
@brucepolaske6780 no, it made it just under 500 miles and blew up. Ended up just cutting my losses and scrapped it.
wheres the noise
Piston noise!! Thanks for watching!
these Kia 2.0 motors are TRASH. my friend purchased 2 new Kia cars, both motors failed catastrophic before 60,000 miles.
Kia and Hyundai have recently had some questionable engines that’s for sure. Thanks for watching!!
My dad has had his kia with the 2.0 in it for years and it's at 217,894 miles on it and has never had a problem with it
They can last for ever if you take care of them oil change at every 6k miles and transmission fluid at every 125k miles spark plugs at every 90k miles and air filter at every 25k and don’t put cheap gas in that can damage your car put premium only not the cheap gas
Ur tripping dog 😂I got one with 251k ur friend probably didn't do maintenance also one of the few small motors with an actual timing chain
@@logandonovan1267ppl don't do maintenance then blame the car
You get bad compressor, sir this noise came from compressor
?????? Nope. Engine noise.
