Some owners of Hyundai/Kia products are up in arms about oil - and not the price of it on the world’s markets. A cadre of eight people in America, ranging in location from California to Texas to Massachusetts, have brought forth a class-action lawsuit earlier this year alleging the engines in certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles consume inordinate amounts of oil. At issue is the apparent need to add engine oil more frequently than the owner’s manual suggests, plus the allegation that some of the wayward oil finds its way into other parts of the vehicle’s gubbins to cause extra damage.
As per the suit, filed by Nye Stirling Hale And Miller; Sauder Schelkopf LLC and Walsh PLLC, plaintiffs contend the defendants “concealed and failed to address” a known manufacturing defect that results in excessive engine oil consumption and can lead to engine stalling and failure. Plaintiffs say that overfilling the engine with oil isn’t a good solution since the chance exists of submerging the crankshaft, a situation which could foam the oil and reduce lubrication. There’s also the issue of extra oil potentially putting undue strain on gaskets and the like.
Elsewhere in this neck of the woods, Hyundai recently expanded an existing recall by over 150,000 vehicles in Canada due to potential problems which could pose a fire risk or lead to the engine suddenly losing power. That defect could be linked to worn connecting rod bearings.
If you’re seeking for a text of the new class-action suit in its entirety, it can be found by searching Cho et al v. Hyundai Motor Company, Ltd. et al. or the clinically impersonal file name of 8:22-cv-00448.
There are a wide variety of Hyundai and Kia models named in the suit, some going back so far as 2009. According to the suit, cars with the allegedly faulty engines include:
    2012-2020 Hyundai Elantra
    2009-2018 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
    2019-2021 Hyundai Kona
    2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade
    2010-2012 Hyundai Santa Fe
    2015-2021 Hyundai Santa Fe
    2009-2010 Hyundai Sonata
    2015-2021 Hyundai Sonata
    2011-2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
    2010-2013 Hyundai Tucson
    2015-2021 Hyundai Tucson
    2011-2021 Hyundai Veloster
    2020-2021 Hyundai Venue
    2010-2021 Kia Forte
    2017-2020 Kia Niro
2011-2020 Kia Optima and Optima Hybrid
    2012-2021 Kia Rio
    2011-2020 Kia Sorento
    2012-2021 Kia Soul
    2011-2020 Kia Sportage
    2018-2021 Kia Stinger
    2022 Kia K5

Car started smoking a few days later. Im glad i stumbled across the new recall from a few months ago. Im calling my dealership monday to get this rolling. Did you happen to have that particular code that's under recall? I forget the code but I had it pop up over a year or so ago and they did the software pr computer update and I'vebeen good everysince.
Does the code have to be active to get the engine replacement approved?
Should have mention my engine died today while sitting parked and idling. Just changed the spark plugs not even a year ago after the engine started vibrating bad. That fixed it. Was gonna change the spark plugs again hoping that's what it is again this time but the vibration is heavier now every time I try to start it. Might finally be the end but hopefully I can get a free replacement.
Last time I talked to kia about a manifold intake code issue they said I would have to pay the Diagnostics fee since the code wasn't the knock sensor code. Hope that's not the case since I don't have any codes at the time. No engine light came on at all

    • @alesiarobinson7572
      @alesiarobinson7572 Před 24 dny

@@adictiveadictive I’m going to be honest. I called a local Kia service center, told them I needed them to check out some issues related to some recalls and gave them my Vin number. They looked up my car and told me I had three recalls that needed attention (HECU, Anti-theft and a canister recall). The tech asked what was going on with my car and this is excatly what I said.. “I was on a road trip on a single lane road in the desert. I was passing a vehicle when suddenly my engine light started flashing and my car quickly decelerated. I drove my car to safety and the engine began knocking. A mobile mechanic was called and told me there was no oil in the car despite not having a leak and receiving an oil change 2,000 miles ago. I need this checked out because I believe this is related to recent engine recalls/campaigns”. The tech told me I need to get my car towed to their facility right away for inspection. Less than 24 hours later I get a call saying my engine is approved, I was issued a loaner car and my claim for reimbursement was approved! I only knew my KSDS update was installed because I called a different dealership to verify. I was never asked for maintenance records, I wasn’t told how I was approved or what codes popped up. It truly was one of the most seamless experiences which leads me to believe that your chances of getting an engine replacement matters less about codes and parts installed and more about the dealership you take it to. So please call around first. If the dealerships first response is to charge you for a diagnostic check, move on. They’re not interested in helping you. If they tell you to get your car in right away and sound genuinely concerned, that’s the dealership you want to go to. I’ll ask about the codes to get you a firm answer but my tech told me, everything checked out and I’m getting a new engine so it sounds like maybe I did have the P1360 (I think that’s the code) alert

I'm taking it back because the Kia dealership tried to tell me that it was bad gas and that the canister and close valve they replaced was fine. It's definitely not bad gas. I have been paying close attention to when it acts up. I am going to have to look more into this. Kia just sent me a letter about the recall expansion. I know I did one software update for the engine and I need to make sure that is all I needed to do.

I got somewhat lucky with my wording before watching this video. I said my car was burning oil but followed up immediately with the recall on the 2.4L. So the lady was nice enough to schedule a basic checkup with a possible technician cost. My intent is to have physical copies of the last 3-4 oil changes/repairs as well as photo evidence of oil consumption to demand a replacement engine on the spot. My local dealers are busy but I'll try to update my comment with how it goes in a couple of weeks.

I went to the Hyundai website put my Vin number in saw that my vehicle was affected. After that you call the Hyundai dealership & the process begins. I had to get a history of all of my oil changes to show them that I got them regularly. I'm glad that I did because they would not have approved it even though it's their fault.

Got my new engine after catastrophic engine failure. The only thing is that KIA ran out of long block engines so I had to settle for a short block engine. The short block engine doesn't quite feel like the long block but what the heck? I've got a lifetime warranty secured no matter what ever else happens to the engine.

It should feel exactly the same because long/short block aren’t different engines a short block means it only comes installed with bottom end components rods/pistons/crankshaft long block means it comes with all that plus cylinder head and all the valve train (top end) installed so in your case you have a new bottom end and ur old top end also anything that bolts too the front or the or the sides is also from ur old engine the only possible exception being the water pump

Aunt still has a 2015 Optima (but like you doesn’t drive it much anymore) that got the ECU update done at 158k miles, the engine has always sounded wonky. It’s not a matter of IF it’s a matter of WHEN it’s gonna fail. Lol, the cars are nice but the mechanics of these 2011-2020 Optima’s are awful.

I have a 2016 Kia Soul that is right now as I am typing this getting the the Engine repaired due to meeting the qualifications for the recall.
However my damaged catalytic converter didn't qualify because they said I was out of warranty. The reason I am contacting you is because you have a large platform and will be able to get the word out to others.
      1. Some people qualify for Engine replacement solely off the extended warranty of the current recall. This applies to people who type in their VIN # but their specific VIN # is not tied to any recalls. When this happens they can only get an extended warranty (if one is being offered) for their specific vehicle's year, make and model. In this particular situation with the Kia Engines; the engine has an extended warranty but the catalytic converter doesn't. So the Kia dealerships parts and service manager will have to contact the manufacturer on your behalf and request a "goodwill" approval for the affected part not covered under extended warranty.
      2. In contrast, If you type in your VIN # and YOUR specific VIN# does come up as being part of the recall itself. Then the recall will supercede any warranty (whether you have one or not) for both the catalytic converter and the engine, because the recall never expires and it supercedes the warranty ONLY IF YOUR SPECIFIC VIN NUMBER IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL
      3. Because I fell in the first category the dealership that is repairing my vehicle got the ball rolling on requesting the goodwill repair for my Cat. I also reached out to the NHTSA who told me to submit a safety complaint about the KSDS fix not actually stopping the Catalytic converter from failing. They said the more people we can get to complain about the KSDS fix not working, then the NHTSA can put pressure on the manufacturer to ALSO issue an extended lifetime warranty for the catalytic converter as well.
I will keep you posted as to whether or not I got the goodwill repair

Hi! Unfortunately, I am experiencing the same problems you explained in your video. My 2015 Kia Optima 4CYL just seized the other day while driving. I was not due for oil change until another 3,000 miles or until the month of May... Obviously the Oil was burning wayyy too fast since I still had another 3 months or 3k miles to go before I was due for a change so finally the engine just blew.. I called my dealership today and they said that there were NO recalls for my vehicle but they will still gladly take a look at it..
What should I do/show the dealership before bringing my car in so they don’t take advantage of the situation?
Also my check oil lights NEVER came on at ANY time leading up to the engine seizing..
Thank you so much for your video and taking the time to read my concerns!

Aug 13, 2023 - My Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.4L engine just seized also. No warnings, no check engine lights, no knocking, no indicators it would go out. Regular shop oil changes. Jan 27th, 2023 I had all the engine gaskets and seals replaced and maintenanced for a small oil leak by my non-hyundai certified shop, the engine stopped leaking oil, it had fresh oil in it, then all of a sudden the engine seized. The shop I towed it to said the engine seized, and that the engine oil was dry. I wasn't due for an oil changed for thousands of miles. Dealership said they would take a look at it. 132,000 miles. The extended warranty ran out, insurance won't touch it. Quotes for used engine replacement is $4000 for the engine alone. Replacing it upwards of $6k-$10k replacement total cost.

Given all of these issues described, why buy a KIA/Hyundai these days? Better to get a Toyota or Honda or something with a good track record. Reliability is the #1 thing in my book. My dad for example has a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis with 250K miles on it. It is not the most flashy car, although it's comfortable and above all else very reliable. Other than occasionally changing the transmission fluid and staying on time with oil changes he's had to put zero work in the drivetrain.
I'd check Consumer Reports to see reliability scores on any vehicle I was looking to get.

They did a oil Consumption test and was burning 2 quarts a 1000 miles the said it was a valve seal and rebuilt the head. Then about 125,000 its burning oil again. Now they say it's a piston ring and it's pasted the 100,000 mile warranty and it's not covered and I would have to pay about 7,000$ to replace the engine. I found they have a class action law suit in 2021 saying it covers pistons and other small block parts like rod bearings and crank case but they told me it only applies for rod bearing and that's not the problem. So now I don't know what to do the vehicle is still at the dealership don't know what to do next I don't have that kind of money.

Thanks for the info! I have a 2017 kia optima that I bought in 2020. It was a certified pre owned vehicle. It had 29,000 miles. At 35,000 miles I slammed on brakes and oil light came on. So I immediately called dealer. The protocol was to do a deep clean of engine. It fixed issue and failed the 2nd oil consumption test. So they replaced engine that has a red dipstick that indicates ksds update. Now at around 60,000 i was having another engine burning oil issue. I was also told when engine was replaced that engine came with a lifetime warranty. So when having issue with new engine replacement. I discussed with manager of dealer. He told me that wasn't true. So to make a long story short I was also told they just replaced engine and the original spark plugs were put back into engine. Now I'm working on trying for a second engine replacement as it burned 2 qts of oil in 1000 miles. They did same thing as another decarb cleaning. Then I bring back in 1000 miles. If it burns more then a qt of oil. They decide whether to fix or replace engine. Supposedly the newer engines are updated and have BMW engineers designing them. Plus come with new spark plugs too. I'm not sure how true that is, but I will ask my mechanic who I trust because he isn't out to rip me off. My mechanic was one that made me aware of burning oil. Thank GOD I haven't had to pay a dime as it's under warranty. Car even came with an extended warranty. My mechanic told me before to not buy it because they are known for engine issues. I live in illinois and was wondering if you knew how lemon law worked on a used car. I know you have to have 3 issues of same thing before it's considered a lemon for new cars. Not sure how it works for a used car. As I'm going to research that option if needed.

I can see the puff of smoke coming out the tailpipe merging onto the hwy. 1 day I had a misfire. Which I was going to replace spark plugs myself. Seen the rear of my engine. The changed a spark plug & charged me. So about 3 weeks later was time for my oil change. I told them again it's burning oil 74k miles. They said I had a valve cover leak right at the corner near passenger side fire wall. I told no oil spill on the under body cover or ground. I paid for that fix. Change dealership & now misfire came back. New dealership say U need a new engine & they put in a claim with Hyundai. Smh, how 1 dealer trying get money & other is honest. After this I will never own a Hyundai again

Your story sounds almost identical to mine. As I bought a 2017 kia optima certified pre owned one too. Had a new engine put in at around 40,000 miles. After it failed the second oil consumption test. As their protocol is so flawed. Cleaning the combustion chamber is just putting a bandaid on the situation. If an engine is burning oil. It could be from a valve leaking. So now fast forward to now. I started having issues with engine now at around 55,000 miles. After the same protocol. It passed as dealer claimed it only burned a half a quart of oil in 1000 miles. I think kia recommendation of 7500 miles between oil changes is way to high. My honest mechanic recommended to change oil at 5000 mile intervals. So after it passed the oil consumption test. Literally 2000 miles later and still have a little over 2000 miles left before an oil change is due. The oil light came on after I slammed on the brakes at a light and then light went out. So as I was able to get it to autozone to fill it up with oil. It had burned through 4 qts of oil. After calling the dealer twice to try to get ahold of the service advisor. Told them I took video of situation. That I want to bypass the oil consumption test as it pretty obvious there is an engine issue. I was informed the the service advisor would get back to me. So after two calls with the last month. Still no call back from the advisor yet. I also have an extended warranty on vehicle that the person purchased before I bought the car. Now I'm going to call kia corporate to see if I get somewhere. I also heard that the newer engines are replaced with new spark plugs. Where the first engine wasn't. So have to see how much truth is in that. I know the advisor told me that is what they do. I'm definitely never buying a kia again!

The 2.0 Turbo engine in my 2015 Santa Fe with 57,000 miles failed in May 2023 and the dealership had the car for a total of 76 days straight until they replaced the engine. Then immediately after I got it back it had a massive oil leak which they charged me $850 to repair. It kept leaking after that and they didn’t charge me any more but had my car a total of 20 additional days over 4 separate occasions. Is there any way to get the $850 refunded to me? I told them the car had no oil leak before the engine failed but I really didn’t have a choice, it was pay that or the $295 diagnostic fee and then take it to another shop or fix it myself. I also didn’t get the one-time “inconvenience” payment due to me as mentioned in the settlement document because they had my car longer than 30 days. Any guidance on these 2 issues would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I bought the car new, never had an issue with it and love the car. I typically buy new cars every 3-5 years but kept this one because it meets all my needs. I took extremely good care of it and it looks better than many cars that are just a couple of years old. After the engine failure I was doing quite a bit of research on it and ran across other cars with recalls and major issues so it’s not like Hyundai is the only manufacturer with problem cars. Additionally my wife recently bought a new Mercedes and it has issues, minor issues but never the less we’re inconvenienced with them. Thanks for listening and any advice you may have.

I wish i saw this sooner. I have a 17 sorento 2.4 that i bought 5 months ago. The engine just blew and i have no idea if they did the ksd. Im hoping the dealership i got it from did. I haven't had it long enough to recieve a notice, and nothing was said at the dealership. I stay on top of maintenance, so having a engine fail 7k miles after driving it off the lot is insane to me. I dont get how engine replacement is even up for debate. Engines dont fail at 70-80k. Mine was burning 1.5 quarts per 1000 miles since the day i bought it. (That doesn't happen overnight, so it has probably been burning it for way longer) They wouldn't do anything then, so i doubt they will now.

I have a 2013 Hyundai genesis coup 2T Rspec, is my vehicle covered? It's a theta engine. It's known to have rod bearing issues due to the oil passage machine process. No problems yet but if i need to do a swap down the road it be nice to be set up to do it.

Beck & Masten Tomball lady told me twice that my vehicle has no recall by looking up the VIN#, but Kia directly confirmed I do and also Joe Myers Kia also confirmed. Idk what shady stuff the lady at Beck & Masten Tomball was trying to pull on me both times I called a few months back. She was definitely trying to get me to pay for a diagnostic, that's for sure. Mine started burning oil at around 60k miles and I'm at like 75k miles now.

My sons 2017 Optima has the THETA 2 engine and the engine died. Had it towed to the local Kia dealership here in Lafayette, LA and they told him his vehicle is ineligible for Kia to replace his engine. For us to replace it, Kia wants $7,000. I’m kind of at a loss on this issue. He bought his vehicle in 2018 at this dealership.

As I stated in my original comment, engine only has a 10-year 100,000 mi warranty. However, if maintenance wasn't kept, they can deny your claim. It's as simple as that and that goes for any dealership, including Toyota Lexus BMW Mercedes. Everybody pretty much has a similar policy in place. If you do not follow the maintenance procedures, they can deny your claim even if you paid for an extended warranty in an extra warranty. The term warranty doesn't really cover much as I found out for myself.

I called as you instructed. I have a 2017 Kia Sorento, burning through oil like crazy. They said there is no recall on my car for the engine. So what do I do now? -- I am also not aware whether or not I have the KSDS update.

We paid $120 for a diagnostic. They told us they didn’t have time to take the motor apart to see what’s wrong with it but they can replace the motor for $5000. We just replaced a tie rod on the driver side. They said the motor wasn’t knocking and that’s part of the recall. What do I need to do.

My wife's Kia Sorento was just approved for a new engine. We are relieved, because we didn't want to just tow it to the junkyard. Still, that's the last Kia I will ever buy. Customer service at the dealership is complete dogshit as well. They've had the car for six weeks and we can't even get a person on the phone to give us an update.

For my 2017 forte the dealer wants a non refundable $600 to tear the engine down to determine if it'll be warranted due to rod bearing failure. Is this a shakedown?

What specifically needs to occur with the vehicle to qualify? I have a '16 sonata with the 2.4l GDI theta engine under recall. Performed KSDS as required when that recall released. Vehicle has 126k on engine however it consumes oil at the rate of a quart every 500miles.. Do they consider this normal with the GDI motor Or do you need to wait until the knock sensor codes and take the vehicle in?
I sent an oil sample to blackstone labs (waiting results) to have a oil analysis performed. Looking to see if it has increased bearing wear material and fuel dilution etc

The recall is for the theta II engine. If you have one, then you qualify. You qualify not only because you have that engine but also cause you have the ksds. They don’t put that software on the car unless they’re preparing you for the recall.
I wrote a book which explains all of this. I recommend getting the book and watching all the videos.

I got a 2013 optima with 2 recalls(headliner plate and low pressure fuel tube) making a knocking sound in the engine i took it to my nearest Kia dealership and they said they “have to do a test which can only be done once and they would change the engine only if it stops working”
I don’t know what to do any suggestions?

    • @StraightOuttaContent
      @StraightOuttaContent  Před rokem +1

That’s correct. If the engine doesn’t fail they can’t replace it. Any other issues that go wrong are up to the owner to fix

Mine still burns oil. I have done some engine flushes with liqui moly and seafoam.some valve cleaner in gas tank. Mpg up and quieter. It is using oil maybe 50% less. About half a qt every 800 miles. It varies for all on this process.

I’ve had no idea this recalled was on my 2015 Kia. Years passed I bought a new used car , even with payments still on my 2015 Kia. The new used car I bought ended up stopping I just sold it finally after being car less hopefully trying to buy something else. My engine in my Kia has a recall am I able to get a new engine from the dealership due to the recall after it being a few years? It went out a month after the recall and I have video footage of the night it stopped working it just turned off mid drive to my exs. As the recall states it will do the the engines. Im just curious I need a car asap to get my job back I was laid off
