  • Beginner and advance tutorial for the class 66 on train sim world 3. In this video we have a look at the class 66 in train sim world 3. We start of at the railway training centre with a quick look at the basics before checking some more advance features and some troubleshooting of this locomotive.
    I am a class 66 train driver in Real Life, but have tried my best here to keep the tutorial relevant to the game, with some reference to real life. In the tutorial we cover :-

    Ex-signalman from the SE here. Interesting video, and whilst I have absolutely zero experience of driving locos (other than a cab ride along the Medway valley line) I'm almost tempted to invest in this software to view the railway from the other side, as it were.

    Thank you for this. So much more informative than the game tutorials. I was a Senior Electrical Maintainer and Panel operator in Nuclear subs. I was taught as a very junior electrical Maintainer(way back when we had DC in ships; you cant fix something if you don't know how it works. Your videos do exactly that.

    Thumbs up! A very clear and detailed tutorial of the Class 66. It would be great if you could also do a video to explain the braking system in details. How do we read the BP, BC, ER meters in the HUD and what do they mean?

      The brake pipe is built with the auto air lever and at 5 bar the brakes are fully released. As the brake pipe drops from 5 bar the brakes are applied. Brakes are fully applied at 3.3 bar and the guage will not drop lower unless you have a problem or remove the key from the cab. For the brake cylinder pressure guage 2nd in from the left you have one on each bogie. This shows the current brake cylinder pressure in bogie 1 on the left and 2 on the right. These will show approx 4.7 bar for full application of brakes 0 for release. Not sure what the ER meter could refer to on the loco you need to explain me a bit more.. the far left guage is also air related and will show main res pressure which should be approx 9.6 bar fully loaded this is controlled by the computer with the compressor unloader valve and then the main res pipe shows on the right which is mechanically fixed at a regulated 7 Bar. The 3rd guage is airflow which should be at 0 unless you play with the brakes causing air to move. Any indiction on this guage without touching brakes indicates air leaks in the system somewhere. There are 2 brake systems straight air which brakes the Loco only and Auto air which controls the loco and any wagons piped up with the red pipe at the ends of the loco. For these pipes Red indicates Brake pipe and Yellow main reservoir, these are stowed on brakets on the headstock at the side of the autocoupler when not in use and should not be swinging around ;)

    So this is kind of similar to what I’m experiencing, but only in the middle of a route when I need to slow down or just enough to reach my first platform, for some reason the train doesn’t move at all. But I believe this video might’ve explained it.

    Great video, thanks. I couldn't get the engine to start until I turned the Control&FuelPump switch on, maybe I'd set something wrong. Loads of good info in here thanks :)

      The only switch that needs to be down to start the engine is the first one on the left, engine isolate switch. If this switch is up and you press the engine start the Em2000 will throw a warning the engine is not isolated and you will have a general fault light illuminated on the overhead warning panel once you key in (before you even press the start button). In fact it is incredibly annoying if the previous person has left this switch up in the other cab when you want to go for a start.

    Nice one, I only know old locos like 33's & 50's. I think all BR loco rear lights are cab end specific so the 37's should be the same end? You are correct the 66 is wrong with the cab lights the other end. Thanks again for the tutorial on the 66 this helps a lot I've had to scratch around a teach myself from what I knew from the old school locos but things like the EM2000 was beyond me with East Coastway scenario with the locos top & tail, took me ages to work out. Not keen on these Ying yings/Sheds but they are our UK prime mover as they say stateside. The brake tips and motor isolation part were very informative.
    I was never a driver but had 'some' experience of how trains were driven, As I knew a driver friend who let me have many cab rides with him years back when that sort of thing was doable but not kosha, if you know what I mean? sadly he is no longer with us.

    Game is so hard and frustrating because it has up using the controller sometimes then just has you using the train controls. Finding it really frustrating. Doesn’t tell you how to do much either. Thanks for this, giving us what the game should.

    Fascinating thanks. Nice to know how to do things properly. Looking forward to the next part. Do you ever get chance to use the hotplate? Seems an odd thing to put in a loco cab. Wouldn't you rather have a microwave? Lol

    Excellent thank you. I normally use flight simulator (a lot...) and trying to learn TSW4 is comparatively difficult mainly because of the (effectively) absence of adequate documentation. When I buy a plane in FS I typically get a PDF manual with cockpit layout diagrams, checklists, standard ops procedures and a tutorial step-by-step flight. TSW4? found a "manual" for the type 66 on DTG site but zero explanations. Messing around in the training centre, multiple times ended up being unable to get any air pressure in the system. Watching this has given me more to check so I will try but DTG are really missing a trick with the sad lack of training for noobs. I bet lots of the games they sell get run less than 5 times then abandoned as people are disillusioned. OK they get the sale but the money must be in the DLC and they will get none of that.
    Oh and why can I not bind controls other than a game controller to the sim? I have countless hardware throttles and switches recognised in FS natively and through scripting modules - my airbus throttle with detents would be great for reverser etc....
    Sorry, not intended to rant but some context for why this level of content is good and *vital* if users are to grow.

    Could you do a tutorial in relation to the braking. I've tried nice controlled braking, but it seems to slow very quickly. And then difficult to get speed back on.

    Thank you and with much appreciation, what you explained in this video help a whole lot! on the run / scenario that I'm trying to do a best I can for a Complete N00b with sim games. TSW3 is my first and for the most part I figured out a fair bit on my own before running to the YB's, there is one thing the run / scenario I'm tasked with using / working with the Class 66 EWS, at one point I need to reduce speed using throttle to coast and use the brakes also due the down grade that goes through station. But by the time I get through the station, the engine is OFF and no idea how, all I have done is set the throttle to 0 and apply the brakes to further reduce speed, a few times I tried this run, my speed went well in to the red, I was wondering if that could have been the issue? The max speed drops to 20mph or so but all I ever got was a yellow indicator oof warning. Either way thank you very much.

      That Is a little strange. Does the train slow down at all? Could you be using the direct brake rather than the train brake?

      @@DadRail Thank you for getting back to me, I did record it with OBS from my XB1, I plan on uploading it a Clip of what is happening. But I'm just using LB to release the brakes LT to apply them and RB to reduce power and RT to increase power.
      The few times it happened, Correction- I didn't apply the brake, Uploading clip now, and yes I started pressing buttons like a mad man, :)) but not till I stopped destination.

    A4 4498 mallard and the 60103 flying scotsman are my most loved steam locomotives and my grandfather used to also work in the old Carlisle upperby 12b locomotive and maintenance sheds around 1960's and worked on the trains as well as being the fireman and signal man and guard and also quite a few other jobs as he grew more into his job, sadly he passed away at the age of 80 on the 26th of November 2022, just looked through his old railway books and photos and found a lot of photos of him working also some of his old badges as well as the 12b loco shed badge that he wore on his old railway coat and also found his British rail identity card with his photo and I'd number on it, wanted to also work on freight trains ever since I was a kid, me and my grandad would always talk about old trains and I know a lot about railway stuff as I'm 20 now, sadly I have epilepsy got diagnosed back in November of 2017 but if I ever get rid of it I'm going to try and get a railway job, usually play on train simulator world 3 driving old class diesel freight trains like the class 37, class 40, class 45, for the modern freight loco I'm always using the class 66, the class 68 and class 88 are also amazing cant use them on the game but I have seen them in real life and I love them.

    I’m not expecting an exact location, but I’m guessing you live close to me, as in your previous videos i was surprised to see my local railway road crossings at Robertsbridge & Battle, plus my village station of Robertsbridge. I’ve got colleagues who live in Hastings that don’t even know where Robertsbridge is. Lol

      @@DadRail ah I used to live there. Not far from west St.Leonard’s station. I’m guessing you know the location of Pound stretcher & TK Maxx, used to be a station? The old platforms are still there. Used to be a site of a big steam engine shed too. I love all the local lost history.

    Hallo Dad Rail i have one question. My BC are still on 4.6. i did everything but nothing help. im playing on PS5. im talking about On foot, cos i wanted just drive it. its not tutorial how to start a train. On tutorial is working fine but not on " on foot". could you help me? Thank you

    Question. Do british locomotives not have dynamic brake systems? Here in North America, most engines are equipped with dynamics. Also, it's interesting to see the different operating philosophies of British and North American railroads. As you probably know already, freight trains here get up to 15 000 feet in length (although most would agree they should be limited to 8 000) with multiple unit lash ups and distributed power. In the UK, it seems to be much shorter trains with a single engine pulling.

      Dynamic brakes aren’t really a thing in the Uk, although blended brakes are, where to train automatically blends air & rheostatic or regenerative brakes.

      Though the air brake on the 66 bears no resemblance to the American 26L I’m used to.

      A few more modern locomotives have dynamic brakes, but on locomotives it’s not so common. A lot of passenger units are fitted with rheostatic and regenerative brakes. Some of your trains in America are beasts! I think one of the problems here is that our railways are very busy, and the time it would take for a 15000 ft to clear a junction etc would seriously limit the network capacity. You then have the issues of having yards and sidings big enough to handle such trains. Some of the routes we operate on we are literally squeezed into the service pattern, it’s no uncommon here for busy lines to have 12+ trains per hour before freight traffic is taken into account. I’d love to come to America to do some train spotting, or should that be Rail fanning:-)

      @@DadRail the old Class 76 on the Woodhead line had a separate dynamic regenerative brake, that fed back into the overhead line. Sure there was a few others too in that era.

    the brake test switch is not quite realistic, it should drop brake pipe control to around 3.3 bar not drop to 0. It also needs a chunk out of the drivers left hand arm rest and a missing roof foam haha. The gsmr is missing from on top of the pedestal.

    A question for you, why don't some train drivers shut the back cab door on a 66? Is it just your all lazy freight drivers 😂or something else? Just seems bonkers to me & looks really odd in videos!

    Does the Class 66 have air conditioning in UK service? I have heard that German 66 drivers have complained about no A/C and the comparatively high noise and vibration levels

      That’s right no A/C the whole frame shakes rattles and rolls.

      We have AC in our 66s. But some companies do not. I’m not sure about the German 266s but our 66s are noise treated in the cabs that keeps them within health and safety at work allowances. That said they are still loud. There is vibration but personally I wouldn’t say it is terrible compared to some other traction.
      It’s worth remembering also that the 66s are now well over 20 if not 30 years old and technology has moved a long way in that time. In comparison to modern locos they are very loud and vibrate a lot, so I guess it depends on your perspective.

      @@DadRail I went and double checked after I saw the engine stop plunger but that's out already, putting the reverser in forward comes up with a message to start the engine but it never does.
      I am wondering if I'm getting into the back cab now tho as couldnt seem to get the brake pressure to drop either (did do the cut-in on the screen)
      Tried another ews 66 further in the yard too but equally can't get the engine start up to work but will be checking which cab I go into

      Nah, as with anything once you’ve got your seat how you like it, it’s pretty unobtrusive. Something you get used to.

      As James says, you get use to it. You don’t have to apply a huge amount or pressure to keep it down.

    Can you operate AWS from cab 2?

      There are many variations on the 66. The AWS is operable in both cabs, however on some variations the isolation switch for the AWS / TPWS is only in number 1 cab, but is still applicable to both cabs.

      It depends on what you want to get out of it. If your looking for entertainment its 100% yes. If your looking for education, its a 75% yes.

      Make sure all the switches on the pedestal are down, make sure the engine stop button is not pushed in, take the key out and put it back in then press the engine start button
