Reaching new lows | A week as a PhD student #7

- This week things get low. Really, really low. And I'm not just talking about the standard of democracy on campus.
In this episode I talk about the science of one of the equations I'm investigating, check that equation makes sense in my data, answer questions about love, sing in Exeter cathedral, make a big mistake, introduce you to Russian choral music, and get man flu. It's a bumpy ride this week!
(NOTE: there is revenue sharing going on for this video because chapel choir got copystruck for singing the Whitacre - which apparently means we sound exactly like the recording the record company has on file!)

It went pretty well. Wrote about him in my personal statement and got interviews with St Peters college, which went alright...

My boyfriend and I got together just before going to university and are at separate universities. I totally agree with the points you made. You have to live separate lives, and not cling on to one another if you truly want to keep your relationship. We do talk every day, but give each other enough space to be happy in our separate university lives. Hardest but most important thing we have done is limit how often we see each other to once or twice a month.
Hey Simon, I'm really loving your videos and I've been watching for a few months but never had the courage to comment. Your content is so awesome and I've even spoke to my physics teacher about you and your lessons about atmospheric physics (currently the module we are learning.) I would like to thank you for your amazing content and vlogs because you encourage me to carry on with my passion for physics and get into a university to try my best to get a place at CERN when I am older (currently at the age of 14.) Thank you (again) for your brilliant work and I hope you keep up with influencing people at my age also.

The choral music is actually my favorite part of these vlogs -- and I'm completely biased in saying so, because my degree is in music, but still. It's absolutely beautiful. Makes me wish I'd either paid better attention in my classes to do with choral music or spent some time in a choir. (And also just makes me really, really happy.)

Duvet problem is easy! Turn cover inside out. Safety pin inside top corners of the duvet cover to the duvet filler. Flip duvet cover right side out and you're done! Guaranteed even distribution/easy to shake out, simple to put back on

I sang in a concert hall with similar acoustics. So nerve-racking to feel like the only one singing. It's also especially hard to gauge the balance of the piece. I was soloist and couldn't tell for the life of me if I was too loud or too quiet.

Yeah I wasn't in the choir for that one! We were short of a copy so I sat it out after setting up the camera (otherwise we would have had 5 first basses too lol)
Wonderful video, as always. The Trinity Singers (TCD) did Sleep last term; it's a truly magical piece to sing and even better to listen to! Great recording of it, Simon.
It's definitely overplayed, but still pretty good ;) I've gotten really snobby about choral music recently and started shunning the 'mainstream' stuff like Whitacre

Another great vlog! Just what I needed today. My sister and I will be visiting the UK in March (12-18). Are there any chapel choir events that we can attend? We both do research now, but we grew up at a performing arts school. You've got the best of both!
