I saw The The open for Depeche Mode in Hamilton Ontario, back in the mid 90s (?)... really should have left after The finished their set. They blew Depeche off the stage in every sense. One of the best shows I've seen.
I was introduced to The The when they opened for New Order and Depeche Mode in the 90s. They were awesome but in no way did they out stage DM during that tour. The Devotional Tour was Depeche Mode in their prime, live.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING MY LIFE A LOT BETTER WHEN I HEAR THIS WONDERFUL COMPOSITION! THE PIANIST MAKES ME FLY, AND YOU ALL MAKE ME FLY SINCE I WAS A YOUNG GIRL!! I’M NOW 59 YEARS OLD, AND LOVE YOUR MUSIC EACH AND EVERY DAY!😊.. AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH, MAY GOD BLESS YOU!! ❤
Peeling the skin back from my eyes I felt surprised That the time on the clock was the time I usually retired To the place where I cleared my head of you But just for today I think I lie here and dream of you I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in But if the sweat pours out, just shout I'll try to swim and pull you out A howling wind that blows the litter as the rain flows As street lamps pour orange colored shapes, through your windows A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes Uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in But if the sweat pours out, just shout I'll try to swim and pull you out
The three previous decades were far superior, without them the 80's wouldn't have existed. The 80's did have fantastic music, but nothing as groundbreaking as Elvis, The Beatles, The VU or Led Zepelin.
@@reinvestorintally Johnny plays on Mind Bomb and Dusk. Both great records. Too bad he couldn't make the last tour, but Barrie did a great job. I need to listen to more Barrie Cadogan.
the the such an underated band( well lets face it they not really a band its matt johnson). i listened to his songs for hours when i was growing up and still today. beautiful compelling music- timeless
The piano solo on the original recording is even better.... here is what Matt had to say about Jools at the time.. "I think he had one run-through, and said, 'Let's go for it,' and laid the whole thing down," Johnson added. "There was just one drop-in we did towards the end. We were amazed. He told me years later, he gets asked about that more than anything he's ever done."
Gianluca, se trovi la versione in 45 giri ( quella che si sentiva alla radio all'epoca) , ti piacerà ancor di più di quella registrata nel 33 giri ! Un saluto, ciao
superb!! i'va always love The The , and what a talent Matt Jaohnson is, !! on the albums he wrote the songs, played every instrument and sang, brilliant voice, and what a hottie yummm!!1
I used to dance like crazy to this at the time, a true 60s classic I♥️in the 80s I saw Jools Holland play this live at Demontfort Hall Leicester , absolutely amazing
I am blown away by the piano solo beginning @ about 3:35. Reminds me of the first time I ever heard the studio version of Layla on the Derek and the Dominos album

bons velhos tempos, the the, new order, joy division, lorde of the new curch, echo& bunnyman, clash, e tantos outros, isto sim era musica! grandes noitadas! saudosas!
I've always loved this song anyway, but the keys on this truly elevate the song to a whole new stratosphere! Don't know who he is but love his style, when I played I was big on bluesy/jazzy riffs like him. Anyone know who he is? I think this is back when Matt actually recorded an album where the musicians contributed & got credit. As a former pro-musician (no claims to any kind of big fame! ;-) for me colaboration was the funnest part of playing/creating. Peace music fans!
The mother of all piano solos. I come here every now and then for this.
So I come here for a live version of this song. Slide the slider to the piano solo and there's an Everest at the spot, looks like I'm not alone.
how many times have you replayed it
I'm agree... Along with Last time Forever's piano solo
Definitely! Anne Dudley's last 2 minutes on Art of Noise's -Beatbox (div 1) from 1984 is also phenomenal...
In my head I just started to mix it with born Slippy.
Reactions?

Jonny Marr on the guitar. Genius
Matt, Johnny, and the boys…. It don’t get better than this.
Thats not Jools. Its DC Collard
Best live version of this song. A very underrated band - so many great, catchy, thought provoking songs!
Não subestimada pelos ouvidos atentos e especiais que gostam de curtir um boa musica. Viva os anos dourados da musica!
Isn't that Johnny Marr on guitar? How can that ever be underrated?
True, very underrated band although it never really is one but merely Matt Johnson and some hired help.
wow this really gets me goose bumps...It's my hymn of the 80's
goose bumps in 2022. still
Yea so seminal….it’s like a permanent dream soundtrack….I just always remember this sound…
... the hymn of the 80's. Nicely put.

The whole song is fantastic, but the one line that gets me is "Uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile".

Fun fact when writing my English poem exams for school I knicked lots of the the and morrisey
The eighties was the best era of music... period!!! This song is awesome.. amazing sound and lyrics. :)

Great job on the piano solo. One of favorite songs of all time. I can listen to this all day long.
I did piano lessons once when I was about 19 and I belted out that exact solo first try.
Don't ask what he hit the keys with
Catch Jools'solo when the the appeared on his show ,the guy is pure genius
@@BigRamifications -- Well, if you were so good, then why didn't you make more of it? Why did you quit? Why did you give up?
I've come pretty close to
A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes. What lyrics.
Uncertain emotions uncertain smile
One of the best songs ever.
One of the best songs ever. Best live version ever heard. Thanks for sharing
Hearing that piano solo just makes me want to take up that instrument . Brilliant song
Same for me.
I'm not qualified to comment on how brilliant this track is.
God I miss the 80's. You know when the musician's had talent and could actually sing and pla instruments. Everything from the heart.
The The,makes me feel glad to be alive,no matter what happens to me,these songs will always see me through! ;-)
One of my favorites ever. The piano solo is classic. THE THE kicks butt !
Soul Mining was the album that got me through my teenage years.... Johnny Marr on lead guitar.....
Have you listened to Johnny Marr's new stuff?
No one embodies de 80s as Matt Johson does!! Great, simply great!!!
piano solo for the gods
Keith Laws - synthesiser (1979-1981). (Now a Professor of Neuropsychology at the University of Hertfordshire.)
Johnny Marr on lead guitar!

REALLY!? I DID NOT know he played with the the. Excellent. Not quite on par with original, but still great.
One of the great piano/keyboard solos in rock n roll. Jools before he went Cabaret!!

My favourite solo of any type ever! Like it more than Knopfler on Telegraph Road!
Saw them open up for The Cure in '93. Awesome show!
I used to drink in Matt's Mum and Dad's pub 'The Two Puddings' in Stratford East London. They were there for ages. 😊
The bassline amazing too..
I believe it is David Palmer on drums. Excellent drummer of ABC.

Jesus if I learned to play that piano piece before I die, i'd die happy, incredible talent, probably need to learn how to play the piano first!!!!
my absolute favorite song from high school
By far the best song from The The. Imo. 80s were absolutely Awesome!!
Nostalgia just hit me like a train
The guy who introduced me to this band is dead now.
R.I.P. Ozzy Paul - We miss ya mate.
