Topper is a human fucking metronome. All four of them were equally essential, but I never get sick of watching that guy kill it in the back. Fucking legend.

@@itsnotme3882 er not really...just like many people 'functioning working class' . Joe's father was a diplomat & not poverty stricken ,but Strummer wasn't living off a family subsidy . And after his dreadful exam results (at private school) was fortunate he made a career in music ..

I don't think Mick Jones gets enough credit for the success of this band.
He could really sing play guitar and had an amazing presence

basically wrote 80% of the music. we saw what happened when he was sacked

I absolutely love the fact the bass player couldn’t sing and play bass at the same time. Saw them twice in the early 80s. The Only Band That Matters.
A very special band. Topper is one of the very best drummers, ever. Incredibly technique, touch, feel and imagination. When I listen to The Clash I often find myself listening especially to Topper's stick'n'kickwork...and I'm a guitarist/vocalist!

Simonon, the bloke started in the band needing stickers on his bass to have the right notes, a year later: Guns of Brixton. Perhaps one of the best bass lines ever! And top of that reggae offbeat
Interesting that Joe plays bass live. Probably had trouble singing and playing. Topper is the bomb
A year later Simonon still couldn't play bass and sing at the same time on this one which is why he got Joe to play the riff.
album wise it's a good track, but live it was always shyte. Siminon could not reproduce it or elevate it the way Strummer could with his choons and vocals. I saw GOB live in Leics in 1980, no better than this.

the live versions played by Strummer were an approximation.. & Paul never got the tone right onstage (also like Joe he also struggled to remember lyrics )
Clampdown is one of my favourite songs they did.
Topper working skins with surgical precision, Mick plugged into his Roland Space Echo and Mesa/Boogie amp, Paul epitomizing urban cool, and a pre-dental work Joe testifying. There was a time they really were the only band that mattered.

There's no comments on THIS? God, I remember this like it was yesterday. Fridays was almost uncanny in its ability to book emerging legends at their absolute prime and then draw fantastic performances out of them, and this is no exception. I mean, how could you be a 12 year old watching this and not be absolutely blown away? Thank god this is available for a new generation to see. A time machine, this-just magic.
Fridays had amazing musical guests.
Which helped make up for the fact that most of the sketch comedy was really bad.
But oh, Melanie Chartoff.
Michael Richards did some good bits.

Easily one of the all time greatest bands who actually lived the lifestyle they sang about. Know your rights is so on point in today's world.
Definitely watched this on TV as high school senior in 1980 ... I still say they are the only band that matters, whenever the opportunity arises.
At last I found a video where Strummer and Simonon reverse the instruments so far had only seen photos, The best band of all times!

WOW!! topper on clampdown is a real treat to the ears and eyes. unbelievable playing, especially listen to the kick drum on the bridge!!! used to play clampdown in a band I was in from Philly called the Von Cools,and just loved playing it, kicking the shit out of my drum kit.also sang the lead vocal on this song and the Rezillos song "bad guy reaction" which also has a great drum part, a real basher!! we actually did the the Rezillos album in it's entirety, this was in 1980-81........ great time to be in a band, awesome memories.

THEY WERE ON FIRE AT THIS TIME OF THEIR CAREER, MASTERED THEIR INSTUMENTS AND THE 3 GUYS WERE WRITING MIND SHATTERING TRACKS ON LONDON CALLING SANDINISTA AND COMBAT ROCK!! 3 CLASSIC ALBUMS!! AFTER THAT THEY BURNED OUT LIKE A FAST MOVING COMET HITTING THE EARTH AT A 1,000,000,000 MILES AN HOUR!!!
It was actually 17 shows in 8 days. And stop shouting.

I was fortunate to be a teenager living in the 1980s UK , with UK bands : THE CLASH, THE SMITHS, THE JAM, i wouldn't swap it for any other decade, " Joe Strummer R.I.P "
My fav 3 bands ( Jam / Smiths / Clash ). Put Echo & the Bunnymen in there as well. ...and I was there too ( 80’s --but not in the UK -so u are indeed the lucky one).

For the guitar Geeks watching note that Joe and Mick are playing through most likely rented Mesa Boogie Mark 1 amps with the stock Altec-Lansing speakers going into Marshall half stacks and somebody is rocking a rolling space Echo unit sounds great but it must have been hella loud on that stage
Totally stayed up to watch this live in 1980. Already had London Calling in my collection. Seeing them on TV meant the world to me.

Saw this as a kid when it first aired on TV - huge Clash fan from the start - the energy of this performance of Clampdown is EXPLOSIVE - the stage can barely contain it!

Wow Paul's a pretty solid guitarist as well as a solid bassist. Incredibly underrated as far as I'm concerned.
Lol what? He's not playing anything here, just strumming along to the rhythm! I love Paul to bits but he's never been a guitarist, or even claimed to be one, he simply couldn't play the bassline of GOB and sing at the same time so they switched instruments with Joe
