@@davidjames579 I agree and I never thought about that. I know three and a half to four-hour movies like Gone with the Wind,The Godfather, and the Ten Commandments work but you do feel the length for different reasons. It wouldbe interesting to find out though.
I will still watch a Tom cruise mission impossible 3.5 hour long movie anyday of the week.
If I can sit through almost 3 1/2 hours of Avatar, I can definitely sit through 3 1/2 hours of Tom Cruise doing crazy stunts on screen.
If you can sit through 3.5 hours of Avatar you can sit through 6 hours of dental work. And 12 hours of MI movies.

@@johnklin I respect that but at the same time it’s still a lotta time watching something ultimately like a 95 min movie without going for example then again. So it just feels weird when people complain to me. Maybe Because I’m a movie goer only. But I understand todays generation prefers having their privacy or whatever. All love. I was watching 65 and had to go but I held that In because it’s against my code to skip scenes from the movie lol. But again just me. Everything is always changing and evolving. maybe one day I will too. & let go of the past.
If its truly GREAT, I’d say keep it to 3 hours, Avatar came in at 3 hours 12 min and is one the highest grossing movies of all time.
The problem with cutting to, is what if you cut some of the best parts? I agree either cutting it in half or moving the tail end to the next movie.
Avatar 1,2, Titanic, Endgame are all 3 hours long and amongst the highest grossing films of all time. If the movie is well paced and engaging from start to finish. 3.5 is a bit too much, especially for us small bladder folks, but I could totally see this working at 3 hours.
Totally forgot about Return of the King. All though it did have two movies come out back to back the years before that helped generate some hype. If Part One is really good, more people will be accepting of a 3.5 hour runtime for Part Two (which I hope happens)

Exactly I always wondered why all these long ass movies don't throw in a 10 minute intermission for the audience to go do whatever it is they need to do then get back to the movie like the hateful eight did when it released. This is where the intermission would be great. Yes that may be a lot of people going to the bathroom but make it 15, 20 min. I’d pay more for a ticket. Its already a long movie, so just charge a little but more. 🤷
I think if it lands at the runtime of The Way of Water, that'll be the sweet spot. Or they could cut that 45 minutes and tack that onto the next one.

I've always wondered how you handle that culturally. Outside of older movies like The Godfather, an intermission like that feels alien to me as an American. Is it jarring or is it just understood going into a movie??

Of course the final movie is not going to be 3.5 hours. A lot of movies at some point during the editing process are 3-5 hours long and always get cut down. This is normal. Also, they are going to make a lot less money if it's over 3 hours and can't do as many showing per days. They are best to keep it right at 3 hours or under. Longer doesn't mean better.
I am the complete opposite of Ray, I love long movies, Avatar 2, The Batman, the Snyder cut, the LOTR extended editions, because when they are made by people who really care (which Tom Cruise definitely does) you know it’s going to be something special

No matter how long those films will be , i just hope Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust character not be killed off , the key in the desert scene and the Venice bridge scene make all of us worry

I think the idea of cutting it down at all could ruin it, if they know the films working you don't touch that. When they trimmed Batman V. Superman it was a mess.

I thought 3 was pretty good and also the villain was probably their 2nd best so far. It also introduced Julia but maybe I'm in the minority. 2nd was ass though
I didn't see any problem here Avatar 2 gross almost 2.3 billion worldwide with 3 hrs. and 12 mins. runtime, I'm not saying it will hit a guaranteed billion dollar but the audience will sit a 3 hour + movie in a theater
An intermission would benefit the theaters actually... Only pay for the ticket once (studio takes 50-60% anyway) but with an intermission that's more concession sales all going to the theater.
If it's hard to cut anything out then I'm with Rob, just have a intermission. I'm willing to bet that the audience will actually go and spend more buying stuff a second time which will make them more in the end.
They will edit down to 3 hours. Still long as hell.

They've probably already filmed scenes for Part II and whatever they're going to cut ends up in Part II. They may just be looking for the perfect time where Part I ends.

I think one of the biggest challenge of modern movies is being able to tell compelling, full-fledged stories within a 2hr 20min timeframe. Many times I have watched a film a said, “they rushed that.”…or “How’d they escalated this so quickly?”. This is where modern tv shows have a huge advantage; they can tell a story over multiple episodes (though some shows get this wrong also). Just my opinion, but I would gladly welcome a 3hr 30min film….especially considering the cost to watch a movie in a theater these days.

They could release the first hour on Paramount+. As a new stunt scene begins a message flashes across the screen, "Thank you for joining us for this Paramount+ Exclusive Preview. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is only in theaters, right now!
And it’s a bloody two part film.
What the should do is to shor it down a little bit, just enough for not be an exhausting experience for the average movie goer. But after six months, when Part 2 is about to hit theaters you can release in home video, streaming or even putting Part 1 in theaters again but niw showing AN EXTENDED VERSION OF THE MOVIE, the version version they're using for test screening. That can be a cool way to level up the hype for Part 2

Most of the audience will not care about the movie being this long. People are looking forward to this movie.
Almost certain to be the top 3 films of 2023. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning is long, but so is John Wick 4 and the 3rd movie which could be the blockbuster is Super Mario Bros.- finally a summer of great movies.

I don't see any point in 1st of a 2 part movie to be 3.5 hours long. When we know this is not the complete story. I guess they should cut it down and Part 2 could be as long as it needs to be.

Why don't they release MI:7 Part 1A for the standard 45 days, and then imediately release MI:7 Part 1B in theaters following it. You'd get the opening weekend payday twice and a big bump on the final weekend of Part 1A of people going back to watch it before Part 1B.
