TLDR: People have less spending money and they wait until it's "free" on streaming.
I think it's the economy. For people that don't have a membership program to reduce costs, it's just too expensive to go to the movies, pay bills (which have gone up), and buy groceries (which have gone up).

In July we already had Indiana Jones (Nostalia fans are out), in 3 days we have Oppenheimer and Barbie opening = and I can tell you from European perspective - I had to pre-buy both tickets because of the generated interest. This means that average moviegoer has to be picky, and it seems MI7 was not the pick for majority for July.

Also, when you know the movie will hit streaming (also most of us are paying around $100 for all streaming services) around 45 days later... Why even go when your money is invested in the streaming platforms. Think like the common person and your answers will be found.

They ALL open like that and have great legs.
All they did was speead the opening out over 5 days instead of a standard 3 day. Day for day it the biggeat opening.
They ARE supporting it the same way they do with EVERY M:I film.
To expect them to susdenly open twice as big as "usual" is just not realistic.
It's likely to be the highest grossing M:I film. The only problem is the Covid affected budget. Adding over $50m to the film. They knew this, it will be fine, AND the next one will cost the "norm" .
The kegs for M:I films are great 3.5x multiplier is likely.

They all have had competition (not quite this big), but Fallout legged out despite Crazy Rich Asians and The Meg grossing $174m and $145m during it's run.

The other movies mentioned did well possibly because of nostalgia, recent excitement for the new franchises (Spiderverse, John Wick). As awesome as Dead Reckoning is, and I highly recommend it, its long and they go Rogue again but I'm not sure if the general audience even knows. A few people I talked to said to me "there's a new Mission Impossible movie?". Its a tough time financially for a lot of people, I think they're being very picky.

For some reason commenters like JC seem to never address/mention some of the major reasons for box office declines of even the quality movies. Economic factors for the average person have become strained over the last 3 years; first due to COVID, then due to inflation and other high costs of living (housing, gas, etc.). So maybe people choose more carefully or more specifically when spending their money. Then there are the less quantifiable factors like personal taste, and people waiting for renting or streaming even though certain movies are much better experienced in the theatre. While people like myself (and obviously JC) may have the luxury of having sufficient funds to see several movies a year at theatres (and going to see one more than once), and can also afford many streaming services on top of that at the same time, not everyone does. Also I usually don’t go see things on opening weekends; I typically go on the 2nd or 3rd weekend or even a Tuesday night when it’s cheaper (I’m going to this M:I movie tomorrow which is a Tuesday). So that’s another consideration JC is not taking into account.

Don’t forget the runtime could have been a factor.
I was debating seeing it again on Friday after going Tuesday night, but the runtime ultimately affected my decision.

2 things to factor about these so-so box office numbers…1) Streaming 2) The NEED to actually go see the movie in theaters.
Streaming has made it very convenient for people to easily say “I can wait.” Many friends/family have told me this especially with ticket prices being so costly.
Which is why there’s not really a NEED for people to see some of these movies. Spider-Verse 2, Guardians 3, John Wick 4…a lot of people were invested, young people especially.
Mario and Barbie have had generations of fans.
I don’t know many under 25 running out to see Mission Impossible despite it being pretty good 🤷🏽‍♂️

FALLOUT is still the best in the series with DEAD RECKONING a close second. The problem with the box office is not the QUALITY but the INTEREST. (The Transformers movies directed by Michael Bay prove that GARBAGE can make money as long as there's INTEREST by the audience to see it. TOP GUN MAVERICK was a hit because many people WANTED to see it.

America isn't supporting a lot of movies. Regardless of how you feel about a particular movie, there is not the same attendance as pre-pandemic. It seems like people don't want to go see movies as much, maybe because they don't want to spend the money going to see movies that they are not certain will be good?... It doesn't matter if it is actually good or not. Plus, it will be on streaming in about 45 days, at a cheaper price relative to spending money at the movies. My family of 4 cost about $75 to see a movie at a discount theater. Imagine that cost at AMC or other theater chains.

Barbie isn't even a competition in global scale..its the Oppenheimer...that has the craze...but when its about to have fun MI7 has long legs...the movie is simply great.. can't wait for the next one...

Part of it is inflation being out of control and part of it is streaming service inevitability. But studios are also to blame due to outrageous budgets and costs. Lots of great movies are going to be considered failures just because of the cost. That won’t change my opinion of the quality of the movies though.

  • @iseewood

OMG! This is whole "Nobody is showing up and everything is bombing!" narrative is getting ridiculous. I mean, did we all go to the theater that much before COVID? Just how many movies do we have to see in the theater just to keep these studios open? Maybe the problem isn't people aren't showing up, maybe its the studios are spending WAY TOO MUCH MONEY on mediocre, derivative movies that we've already seen. What are we up to now? 7 MI movies?! And it's just Part I! Ridiculous! I'm saving my time and money for Barbie and Oppenheimer because they are actually original movies with new ideas and new stories. I'll watch MI: Dead Reckoning when I can stream it on Paramount +, just like all the other remakes and sequels that keep getting pumped out into theaters.

I saw the movie, and I enjoyed it! Years ago I probably would have seen this movie twice. As others have mentioned, it’s too expensive to see a movie currently. Between gas to the theater, IMAX ticket price, and concessions, it was about $35-$40 for one person. I’ll save my money for the second viewing on streaming.

John, understand. The Movie Going Experience is now a "luxury" and not a "necessity". For others, the movie came out during a week many weren't getting paid (which is idiotic). Some people can't live comfortably and spare the budget a movie ticket like you can.

The thing is John this film is going to have legs! Unlike other films the older crowds don’t rush out to theaters it’s the same with Indy 5. Anyone under 35 don’t rush out to see films for the opening weekend. Other thing it will be in theaters for a while and not go streaming fast. So the good thing people have lots of time to see it.

  • @DoooBeeDoooBeeDooo

Honestly i think it's cause with this movie season being so heavy a lot of Americans can really only afford to choose 1 movie a month that you want to go see. Especially with movie theaters being so expensive and the economy maybe taking a hit. Like This month for most moviegoers it's gonna be Oppenheimer and/or barbie that they choose to spend their money on. So i honestly believe that's the reason

Mision Imposible long tradicional run in international box office might be in danger too, because Nolan movies also tend to get their money overseas, in a long run. Besides that, in the last 2 months he have seen SO MANY blockbusters. Many people in the world only go to the cinema once or twice, so, its logical they will strugle to break even.

Loved this movie. Overall i say best Hollywood movie this year. Loved GOTG3 but animal cruelty scenes were tough. Across the Spiderverse actually well done multiverse movie however it is a multiverse movie.
I think Mission Impossible films sometimes have a slightly convoluted plot for general audiences and I also think the run time turned people away. I mean its not just 2 hours 45 minutes…its literally 3+ hours with the heavily loaded theatre commercials and trailers.
With that said I think this film will do well globally and have really good legs.
