Skimmers targeting EBT cards, ATM transactions

Crooks are tampering with ATM or credit card readers, which could put your money and personal information at risk. Channel 13's Bryan Horwath looks at how authorities are working to crack down on those thieves.

Any businesses should be held responsible and the employees also have a responsibility to check all ATMs. Should be part of duties

Hold the businesses accountable and they will have staff check each terminal inside and at the gas pump every other hour for skimmer devices.

I lost $1900 to an EBT scam. The card automatically imprint the personal access code (only FOUR digits???) on the card. That in itself is insane. I had a phone conference with Costo as well as California EBT loss prevention and their response was sorry about that. We will do nothing but we'll do it right away! My card was scammed at a 7-11 cash register terminal by the clerk, and used at Costco in San Francisco - a store I've never visited - and I am not a Costco member! Costco didn't care and the state entity would do nothing. They said, Not their problem! What do they care? It isn't their families' food budget!

I KEEP ALL MY CARDS TURNED OFF UNTIL POS........I DON'T HAVE TIME. ONCE I GET A NOTIFICATION OF A TRANSACTION I DIDN'T DO, I CANCEL THE CARD....SIMPLE.

Workers should check beginning of shift and the middle of their shift and before leaving their shift. It doesn’t take that long to do so.

how can they get access to deep inside the terminal unless the store or an employee is doing it? I can't even buy a pack of cigarettes without being on camera. I guess I just won't buy anything ever again. I think I will save a lot of money.

It can be done in less than 30 seconds while the clerk is distracted. Nobody is going to sit there and stare at the security footage looking for a brief moment when a skimmer is inserted. They'd have to have 3 full time staff positions to cover the watching of 24 hours of footage per day.

@@busterthe2 Absolutely! My EBT card wouldn't work at my local 7-11 and the clerk (a really obese young woman) grabbed it out of my hand and said "I'll take care if it." $1900 was taken out and used, supposedly, at a Costco in San Francisco. I have never been there and am not a member. How???
