- As Americans do everything they can to keep costs down, one area where there continues to be a threat is the gas pump. And we’re not talking about the price of gas - but rather the possibility of identity theft.
People, keep your cards locked/frozen all the time except for when making a purchase. Nobody can put a charge on it when it's locked. You lock and unlock instantly using the bank's app on your phone.
That’s why cash is king
so, spotting skimmers yet NO video of a skimmer installed so we know WHAT to look for?
I am shocked that this story did not once mention tap to pay, such as using ApplePay or the NFC chip that's already built into most credit cards.
Where are these skimming devices sold ?? 🤔 How about online. The FBI NEEDS TO STEP IN AND CATCH THESE PEOPLE SELLING THESE if they don't want to get involved have the C.I.A. catch these bastards

Too bad the establishment owners dont take a few minutes throughout the day to check the credit card readers at pumps and checkouts.
So wtf does a “tamper proof” sticker do to stop somebody. Wtf
It's not designed to stop criminals. It's designed to show that someone unauthorized has tampered with the pump.
I went to a 7=11, and paid for food inside, and as I ran my card the top of the credit card machine came off. I think the middle eastern worker was responsible for this because he tried to put it on and became very uncomfortable. How could he not know. This was inside a 7=11. In california. I never go there anymore or even to get gas. No way!!
There's a possibility he was innocent. There's videos of skimmer inside Walmart as well, & Walmart has tons of cameras & employees around the registers. There's a video of 7-11 where a team of 3 skimmers, 2 are blocking the cashier and/or distracting the cashier, & 1 slips the skimmer on in less than 5 seconds.
Always pay with cash.
A few days ago $1000 was taken from me at 6:20am it had to be Walmart or Bank of America that my info was stolen. I'm in Northern California it was taken off at a Bank of America in Southern Ca
They are finding card scammers at the checkouts at some Walmart stores now, yes Walmart! Also at some Wendy’s and Mc Donald’s drive throughs. Pay cash instead. I just found three fraudulent charges on my debit card totaling $247.00. I was lucky, they could have wiped my account out but they were starting out small and my bank investigated and quickly refunded my money. I brought the anti scammer - card sleeves from Amazon but now I’m afraid to use my cards at Walmart which is where I mainly use them.
what about using the chip instead of swiping?
I use the phone apps now, especially at McDonald's, Walmart, target, etc. Yes, it is linked to my check card for payment, but it is legit and goes direct to them, is approved, I get an emailed receipt and don't have to step foot into the establishment in 99 percent of the time. It doesn't allow easy skimming access. The only thing is, I guess, is if the establishment gets their online payment system compromised. Over the air however, which is how near frequency communication (nfc) works, is supposed to be encrypted, but I still wouldn't trust it 100% with the possibility of a reader being nearby, grabbing the raw data from my card. I'd use cash, but many places have, especially in those little mom and pop ghetto gas stations, trying to refuse to accept cash, especially if they are in on it and installing these skimmers. Makes prefect sense, but if we're seeing large, reputable places experiencing the same, guess we need to be super vigilant at all times and check constantly unfortunately.
Card terminals should have a built in scanner that shows if there is a wireless skimmer nearby. If not that, there should be a handheld scanner that employees can use on terminals every so often to check for skimmers. This device could scan all the common frequencies and modes used by criminal skimmers. They do make them.
Was just in Hawaii. Prices are now basically the same as what they were here in Japan when I first moved here almost 35 years ago. It’s gone up a bit over the years but not excessively. The US though? Haha! Welcome to the club.
So we should always go inside the station to pay for the gasoline if we have a debit card right?
i try to pay cash these days for everything. but at a almost full tank for my pu topping $150.USD, kinda hard. but then i use the inside the store payment way.
Thats I used to do. Need to go back to it or maybe use a gas (preload)card.
States are going to have people that go around and check pumps at least once a week
Let's see, states like CA. probably only have 130 million gas pumps which seems reasonable to read once a week.

Cell phone jammers at the pumps would work great
You can buy a SKIM REAPER or HUNTER CAT device that detects a skimmer at pumps, ATMs , etc. Make sure your wallet has an RFID protector. People can steal your information standing next to you

I don’t believe gas stations don’t want this. In fact some owners put them there. AND this makes people go in to pay, making them more likely to purchase other items inside.
What about offline cash payments I stiff like a dollar or so too small to prosecute
How does the transaction get approved and go thru if there is a fake one on top of the real one?
It captures it and passes the data through normally.
In the old days, the fake one would capture the data, then the thieves would have to come back & retrieve the skimmer to download the data. Now with bluetooth, they could just keep the skimmer on FOREVER, pull up, pretend they're getting gas, but in reality, downloading the data to their phone.

How can scammer secretly place such devices with all security cameras now? What does UNtampered state seal look like, where should seal be placed, & what do fake card skimmers look like? Vid fails giving real help to spot gas skimmers. Need big $$ to fill up tank & ATMS = prime scammer targets too.
Now you need to clone the chip with X2 emv software, get a valid dump with pin

Just use a virtual wallet like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or Android Pay.
