      Brandon Terry, That helicopter play is what changed my opinion of John Elway. Prior to that, I was quite the hater with little respect even though he went to 3 Super Bowls. It wasn't his Super Bowl losses that caused the hate, it was his whiny attitude. The helicopter play showed me a completely different man. Much respect gained. That play gives me the chills.

His father researched the entire state of California for the right High school for John. Granada hills was a so cal passing power house back in the day. John was one of the greatest high school quarterbacks in history. He was badass. Full ride to Stanford witch was the quarterback university back in the day. Did not have a great record in college but would always pull some major road upsets of national powers , Oklahoma, Ohio State and usc back in the day. His last college game was the play game against CAL , When the ladrelled and pitched the ball about 20 times before cal scored a crazy touchdown the band was on the field because they thought the game was over. That play cost Stanford a bowl game appearance. Elway never played in a college bowl game, that is unbelievable.

Many of the starting quarterbacks played in the early 2000s when rules were supposedly looser, yet they still put up monsterus numbers, explain that.

    The AFC were mostly underdogs in the Super Bowls (besides Elway in ‘87 and Jim Kelly in ‘90) from the mid-eighties to the late 90s. And here comes a guy that gets drafted the last year the AFC won in 1983. Gets blown out and embarrassed in every 3 Super Bowls, ‘86, ‘87 and ‘89. He was a fantastic dual sport pro caliber athlete.....before some other guys. It's said that Elway threw so hard that he broke the fingers of several receivers and that he could throw as far as anyone that has ever thrown a football. Yeah, the Broncos lost those early Super Bowls but without Elway they would never even have gotten to them. It's great to see that he stayed with the organization up to today. *nod. the intangibles, Elway had in spades. you could see it throughout the video where Elway was talking with or encouraging teammates, not as a superstar, but just as another guy on the team that wants to win. that's why his teams could overachieve, they loved playing with #7, one of the guys.
      that's my gripe against Marino. sure, Marino had better mechanics, but he was a diva. go watch some of his videos, he has a tendency to talk down to and disparage his teammates. with his success on and off the field (tv commercials and endorsements), his head got too big for his team and he more or less viewed them as a burden he needed to carry instead of playing with them as equal partners.

      bvbxiong I agree you about both Marino and Elway. Your thoughts on Elway in particular is dead on. Elway transcended stats. I don't think that's a stat that can ever measure the belief that whenever #7 was on the field his teammates and opponents believed the broncos always had a chance.

      No one in the history of the NFL has done more with less than Marino, no one. Barry Sanders is a close second. Elway needed an all star team to win just remember that. Cheating the salary cap while Terrell Davis carried them. Elway was a great QB no doubt, I got him 5th all time but he was never better than Marino, never. From their rookie year, all the way to retirement it was very clear Marino was by far the better QB, Elway's 2 rings doesn't change that

      @SVanTha Před 6 lety +15

      Marino's '84 Dolphins that played in the SB had the #1 Offense and #7 Defense in the NFL. Marino's playoff stats: 8-10. Elway's playoff stats: 14-8. Before Terrell Davis, Elway led 3 Broncos teams to the SB, Marino led 1. Pretty obvious who did more with less.

      @greg trust: i agree, Marino's the better QB but Elway's the better leader. that's why Marino has the stats and 1 SB appearance, while Elway has 2 SB rings and 5 SB appearances.

      I was a huge Elway/Bronco fan as a young teen through Elways retirement. I hated the new uniforms and wished I could’ve seen a Super Bowl win in the old uniforms. I even think I like the aways better than the homes, can’t decide. Those whites and that helmet look good, but the orange and blue helmets look great too.

    I'm not really into sports, but even I know that John Elway belongs in anyones "Dream Team", everyone says how well he could throw, but I haven't seen anyone mention how he knew exactly when to do so, the man deserves his legendary status because of his "Smarts!"

    Kinda refreshing today to see a quarterback like Baker Mayfield who thinks he is good enough to go to a team that is bad, who drafted him and made that team better.
