I remember in 2004 seeing a stat that Donovan McNabb was the first QB in NFL history to throw 30+ TDs and less than 10 INTs. For context, Tom Brady has done this 6 times, and Aaron Rodgers has done it 8 times in the following 18 seasons. So yeah, different game.
Passing got easier in 1978 then 2004 then 2012. The more games a QB has after 2012 the more he closes the gap between him and Marino.
Also that McNabb year was 2006 I'm almost certain. Definitely not 2004 tho.
@@IxAMxNIGHTMARE you know you can look up his stats, right?
@@briansager3744 I stand corrected! I would have bet my life on 2006 too! 😂
I mean you could hit the QB when Elway and Montana and Bradshaw and Staubach😊 played.
I'd love to see this for marino, we'd probably see him having 6000 yards and 60 tds
He probably would’ve done Marino before Elway if he wasn’t a Broncos fan 😂
Marino and still no rings Marino just kidding Dolphins Front Office has always been horrible
Josh Allen ×3
As a Dolphins fan it pains me to say this, but the biggest change for Marino would probably be that he wouldn't stay a Dolphin. Players didn't change teams often in the 80s/90s, Marino would have jumped ship from a weak team he carried on his back to a well run team that was a QB away from a title, like Stafford to the Rams or Wilson to the Broncos.
If Elway's modern day comparisons would be Mahomes and Allen, then Marino's would be a robot hybrid of Rodgers and P.Manning
Any of those quarterbacks from that era. Elway, Marino, Montana, Kelly, Young, their stats would be astronomical
Well Kelly and and Steve Young played in two great games one in the usfl where they pass I think both passed over three 300 yards game both in the NFL they have the no punt game
@@jerryjanik480 I have the “ no punt game “ on tape. Still works
And they would have played longer with the new rules...
@@Dr-Alexander-The-Great that was great game I believe five or six years old time but I remember watching the game
Unitas would dominate.
I was 15 when Elway was drafted. I feel privileged to have been able to watch him play for so many years.
This could’ve be one of my favorite episodes that you’ve done! I watched Elway his entire career In complete awe of how freaking awesome he was. Thanks for taking the time to prove that to the naysayers.
John Elway's arm is a gift from God. He probably would be even better in today's offenses scheme. He played with below average receivers most of his career as well. He was also drafted by the Yankees also, dude was a natural athlete.
You should have chosen Elway's 87 season since that was his MVP year. That strike-shortened season averaged over 16 games, giving him 4,200 yards, 25 tds, and 16 ints.
The simple answer is John Elway was one of the best qbs ever and would be great in any generation. Don't forget as well he had Dan Reeves as a coach for some time.
I love this video all about how Dan Marino is the best qb of all time!
greateast without sb lololol
@@tylerhorton6747Dan Marino would be a perfect fit for today. No running game just throw it arena league. No strategy needed because the Defense has their hands tied behind their back compared to the 80’s. The powder puff boys of today would end up in a colostomy bag if they played back then
Man this channel is so good Purna you deserve more subs for how legitimate good your videos are
Elway had more mobility than most but he stood out as a QB because he had outstanding arm talent which translated into wins and winning seasons in an era where the passing game wasn't nearly so dominant. I have no doubt that he would have excelled in any era. It's just that rule changes have massively shifted in favour of receivers and QBs over the defense.
Exactly. It's also worth noting that, in Elway's era, it took fewer scores to win a game, about 3 then (in an era where it was easier for defenses to put games away and thus take pressure off the QB/receivers to do so via scoring) versus 4-5 now (in the era where offenses often have to put up big make up for middling defenses.) I have no doubt Elway could adapt and squeeze in one more score most games in this era, especially with play similar to Mahomes' or Allen's and, like you said, rules refitted to better protect the QB and the receiving corps.
@@smilingearth5181 I think calling today's defenses middling is a little unfair. Like you said, the game has changed to favor the offense. Imagine Aaron Donald playing in the 80s. He'd probably have a running tally of QBs he knocked out of games.
I'd also say that it helps when the other team is winded before warms is done because of the altitude. As a passers he did not have more TDs than INTs until his 11th season. And he didn't pile up yards, he just played forever. Also compare his completion % to any consistent starting QB in any era back to 1960. Elway will almost always be at the bottom.
@@IxAMxNIGHTMARE so was Cam Newton and he actually won an NFL MVP went 15 and 1 and made it to the Super Bowl.
@@bradleyhoward9638 true but that was year 4 and flaming garbage since.
Elway is the best qb ever. The Broncos got to three super bowls they should never jave been in mostly because of him alone and the browns being the browns. I lived in Cleveland as a Broncos fan at that time it was glorious.
Definitely need to see one of these on Marino, and possibly Unitas too
When Elway had a complete team to play on he shared the TDs with TD who took a lot of pressure off Elway. If Elway was younger at that time, he would have 6 SB wins.
Dude no he wouldn’t have. Don’t do that
When Elwayis had pro bowlers and HOF he won two super bowls and lost 10 games in THREE years. Imagine what his career could have been in the early years if he had some weapons.
@@3512250 Maybe against the Redskins in the 1980s but against the Giants and the 49ers, those are tall orders even if he had a team back then as good as 1998.
@@iamhungey12345Definitely not the Redskins Super Bowl in the 1980’s. Elway threw three extremely ugly picks and took some of the gnarliest sacks you will ever see. That younger version of Elway did not know how to just throw a ball away under pressure. No amount of talent around him could have saved that game. The defense completely killed Elway, and on the other side Doug Williams broke records after messing up his knee and having to sit out a drive and Timmy Smith set Super Bowl records that still stand behind the greatest offensive line ever assembled. Elway sucked that day and he sucked against an all-time great team that would have handily beaten any iteration of Elway’s Broncos.
@@harb1ng3r82 To be fair that began after the Redskins raped the Broncos in the second quarter despite being down by 10 initially. I seriously doubt the later team in the late 1990s would have vomited in the second quarter the way they did in the game in 1988. Also should have serve a lesson for Browns fans if they want to keep thinking that their team could have done better when the team they lost to got blown out each of these three times.
this was really cool to see, being born in 01 its interesting to learn about the QBs from before my time, and especially seeing how they stack up against the cream of the crop today! sick video brandon
Elway is the father of Josh Allen so yeah, he'd tear things up. Imagine what Elway would've done with steady wr and te on a regular basis. He went to SBs with ham and eggers like Vance Johnson and them.
Steve Watson!!!
Exactly, Elway brought some pretty rough Broncos teams to Superbowls
Elway basically dragged carpenters and plumbers to super bowl appearances
I didn't care for his stats, I cared how he had grits and toughness on the field. He didn't quit despite losing the first 3 SBs. Most QBs would just break down and fade into obscurity. Oh no, not our Elway. Also we can recall, we don't have big name players on our squad for most of the Elway Era. Elway did what he could. Someone mentioned he had one of the fastest throwing footballs in history.
Yeah, him and jay cutler actually are clocked with the fastest ball and release.
@@shawnthomasbrown3867 except for Jay Cutler was terrible
@@bradleyhoward9638 cutlers first season as a starter, he shattered the club record for yards, and made the pro bowl. Mic drop
@@shawnthomasbrown3867 and then he sucked every year until he retired
@@bradleyhoward9638 bears went to the playoffs with him multiple times. He would have been denvers franchise qb if mcdaniels hadn’t came and fuckin wrecked our entire team.
I think what we see here is that when Elway played defenses were allowed to play defense against the pass unlike the more recent years.
Being a Chiefs fan , Elway was someone I loved to hate . The guy was great and is QB royalty IMHO .
For a lot of QBs, the team that you are drafted into usually determines success. I've seen a lot cases where a talented QB was ruined because of poor coaching and culture. There are very few Quarterbacks that I've seen who would've "made" it regardless of the situation they got into when they entered the league. Elway is one of them.
It's interesting with Big Ben's retirement, how he wanted to shape his career after Elway, to think back at the comparisons and how time has changed the sport
ben is better
That was great. Elway’s talent is still the prototype talent wise. Give him a modern upbringing with summer passing camps and thousands of extra reps in HS alone and modern coaching and he would probably be the best QB ever.
Elway WAS the best QB ever.
@@MW-bi1pi Absolutely. Young people owe it to themselves to look up some of his career highlights, or maybe get some of his better games in their entirety. Once you've seen John Elway, it puts everything else into perspective. Between his tendency to make his greatest plays with the game on the line, and his sheer physical talent, he was like Jordan....if Jordan had had 300lb men assaulting him throughout the games...
I grew up watching John Elway play… I believe, without a doubt, he is still the best overall athlete to play the quarterback position in the history of the game… while I would agree that Tom Brady, Joe Montana and Peyton Manning have had the best overall career,
I believe no other quarterback could do everything that he could, as well as he could, in my humble opinion… I believe nobody could scramble, pass the ball with a canon arm, make plays across his body down field, bring average teams to three Super Bowls in one decade with very little quality supporting casts and simply put, win. I bent over backwards to watch every game as he always brought chills to my spine, regardless of whether he was able to pull out the win. Boy do I miss that energy!
We love the work you and your team put in this video. The music was also bearable tooo as always, not too loud and just a good pace. Good video Brandon.
Thanks for the vid. This is why GOAT status and the " Very Best" for NBA and NFL players should be broken down by Era and the Rules by which they played in.
People really do ignore how rule changes effect a career. Like there were rules in all sports in the past that made it easier back then, there’s also rules that made it so much harder back then. Same for now. The difficulty in winning is the same, the challenge is different.
excellent video perna. well thought out and researched. Few things grind my gears like Elway slander.
The game compared to the early 2000s, let alone the 90s and back, is so different it's almost a different sport. Brett Favre went from being done with the game, to being arguably the best after some rule changes and safety measures. Tom Brady was a better than average qb to being the fake goat. Brees looked average, and lit it up after. I believe it all changed in 2004. The game became so much easier for qbs. Not a bad thing, it's more entertaining. But we can't compare
I was born in 78 and I can say elway was one of the best, not to mention his comebacks which he was always up there and he was the guy you wanted if you were in the hole early.
Ive never seen such an amazing intro to a football video
Dude I never knew Wade Philips was our Defensive Coordinator in 89 to 92 and was our Head coach for a year. I've been a Broncos fan all my life since I came out of the womb, but yeah. I was only 2 in 89 lol So interesting. Awesome episode guys!!! Loved it.
Wade Philips became a legendary coach as a DC for the 2015 team, and he struggled througout his career as a HC, but he did leave an indelible impact on the Broncos as HC by trading for 2 top quality Offensive lnemen, incl. the best LT in franchise history; and he emphasized the passing game in a way that reinvigorated Elway's enthusiasm for the game, at a time when he was considering retiring.
@@tgrotenhuis09 I knew he wasn't a great head coach and that in Defensive Coordinator was where his true calling shined. I remembered he was with Dallas at one point. You never really heard anyone mention him before the 2015 season in Denver. It's overlooked and easily dismissed and that is sad. He really was a well liked great coach.
@@williamcatalano1762 Wade was very much a players' coach (like his father Bum, who also never won anything), so players loved playing for him, but he also wasn't very organized. He did best when there was a more authoritative HC overseeing the whole team (e.g., Dan Reeves or Gary Kubiak). I remember one story from Wade's stint as Broncos HC, when he called a timeout *before a kickoff* and said something like "just to make sure everyone was ready." That shows Wade's level of organization when he was the top guy in charge!
Great video Perna, I could never watch enough Balls Deep content.
Thanks for doing this. As someone who never saw Elway play it puts a lot of things into context.
This was a great video. Amazing work brother🤘
Would love to see this video about Dan Marino
Dan Marino would average 5000 yards with 40 touchdowns Plus
More videos like this, Brandon!
Need more of these
"What would Dan Marino's stats look like?"
That's the only thought I have watching this video.
This was super interesting. Damn hats off 👏 good work Brandon
This was Great! Also love the comparison to Rivers and Herbert, that had to hurt for you. :) Bolt UP!
Elway and stats don't belong in the same sentence. He played to win not to look good and lose.
He lost an awful lot for a guy that played to win. Sure he ran into some buzzsaw teams in the 80s but up until the tail end of his career dude was all stats and no rings
It’s impossible to know, but I think he’d still dominate. Top 5 all time talent. Amazing mechanics. Elway always took that beat to step into his throw whenever he could. In the end, he was a boss in his time and that’s what matters. 🧡💙7️⃣
Brandon you’ve been creating some of the best sports content for years! Thank you
Annual 4,400 yard plus seasons, with at least 28 touchdown passes on his worst year and up to 50 on his best with 10 picks being his ceiling. Also annual playoff wins and or conference championship appearances/wins.
Perna's face on Lloyd Christmas was the low key highlight of this video
This was absolutely amazing!
Thank you
Great video! This made me realize the evolution of the passing game and how some QB's from the past might not have been so great in today's game. Keep up the great work!
Elway had a strong arm, was able to buy time with his feet, was an above-average runner for his position, and wasn’t afraid to get hit.
On the minus side, he had a real issue with wildness early in his career. He’d throw the ball into the ground several yards short of his receiver. He’d overthrow guys so badly the ball would be uncatchable. With time, his accuracy and consistency improved.
Who would be a good modern comp for him? Hmmmm…Russell Wilson would probably be my closest among current guys, but Elway is a good bit larger than Russ. Out of the two you picked, I like Allen better as a comp. Mahomes never really had the accuracy issues early on. Elway and Allen both did.
I needed this video today!!!
Please do more balls deep episodes, they’re by far my fav part of your channel
More of these type of vids please
I see John Elway, I click.
I actually think a better modern day comparison would have been somewhere between Rivers and Wilson.
Fun video idea. You should do Marino next and break the internet lol
A lot of that difference has to do with the rules changes making the game much more passer friendly.
That intro was deep lol
Still in the process of watching but my initial reaction to the title was yeah he would just have thrown a bit more. Elways dad was one of the early adopters of the run and shoot which was one of the system Hal Mumme took concepts from to develop the air raid. Which inspired so many teams switch to either spread to pass or spread to run offenses. I probably should have finished watching first but I hope he brings it up
Somehow, I actually understood the math as you explained it. That was very interesting.
This was really cool perna
Damn I wish we could do this for all sports. I’d love to know where Allan Langer and Andrew Johns would sit in the modern NRL.
Nice vid. Some informations are fabricated to fill the narrative, but it was very well translated so that today's kids could understand. They simply don't get throwing 180 yards in game was like throwing 300 yards today. Not to mention recieving core was incomparable with today's talent around the league, Shannon Sharp was Gronk and Odell in one body and today every team has at least 2 talented players like Shannon and one who is better, by skill set.
It was a rougher game at QB during Elways era no comparison!
Look, as a Chargers fan, I lothe and hate Elway, but in today's league he would be unreal! His arm strength, semi mobile (in his early days), a league that protects the QB more. Put him on any team with semi-decent wideouts and a TE, he is going to simply produce.
This is an amazing concept for a video. As a fellow Broncos fan, anything to distract me from Russel Wilson is widely accepted
Receivers also have stick'em gloves. I remember old football movies making jokes about putting catch assist materials on their hands and clapping to break the huddle.
I wonder if it would make sense to make some kind of "Relative True Passer Rating" stat. In basketball, rTS% is the player's TS% minus the league average for that season. I could see a similar type of concept adding context based on era.
Nice breakdown, also now I'm dizzy.
What a beautiful rendition of “Do you know the muffin man” playing in the background 😂
Elway still being a top 10 QB comparatively is dope and gives you perspective.
LOL that kurt cousins line. Chef's kiss. Haha
You should do a video about the the bills Patriots no punt game and the 49ers bills no punt game
Honestly, with that clip of him on the scooter in the schedule release video, he’s a superbowl contender if you ask me.
I agree with floor boards. Do Marino! (please).
0:30 Do you know the muffin man, the muffin man, the muffin man?
Perna gettin royalty free with the tracks 🔥🔥
Best Perna/Keys video ever! Elway was the greatest CLUTCH QB of all time.
Joe Montana would like a word
Calm down. Calm WAY down
If there were a draft tomorrow with every QB in history available, and teams could build around that QB, I contend that Elway would go #1. Only a fool wouldn't take Elway first in this modern, pass-happy league. He was not about stats (though he'd own every record if he had played in the right system). Elway was about pulling a victory out of the jaws of defeat, and a game was NEVER over until the clock read 00:00. I miss that in Denver. We'll never have Elway's equal again. Thanks for the video!
Brandon "Why does my dog look like a Raiders fan" Perna
Thanks for the Fencik late hit. For some reason, as a Bear fan, I miss the '80s.
Your next episode of Balls Deep should be a tour of the basement at Ball Arena.
On the flip side, there's no way guys like Tom Brady would have been able to play as long in the much more brutal 80s-90s NFL
your best video ever
Brandon "If I stand On My Shoulders, I'm Taller Than John Elway." Perna
That’s crazy there was less int in the Covid year
Effort throwers will always look fun no matter the era. It’s why people keep giving Wentz a go because it’s fun to see someone yoke up to throw a dart.
I'd like to see a video for Namath one day.
Granted him being in the HOF is still questionable and it's clear winning SB helped a lot but I had to wonder how his numbers would have looked in today's game.
Or for a challenge, some old time busts like Tony Eason.
You also forgot that there were fewer games played per season.
Great video. I bet you were seeing math formulas while you
Slept. Also, thanks for listing Marino as a passing God. And, go Fins.
John Elway was my childhood hero. He is still my hero in sports. I don’t care about what he thinks about politics (we prob disagree) or what he does off there field. It’s about what he did on the field. Magical moments I’ll treasure forever. I was so in awe of him that when I had a chance to meet him after a practice (TDs rookie year in fact), I was too nervous to walk over. in my defense, I was 15. Heh.
Chiefs fans of the 90’s hated Elway but we all know how good he was and respect his game. Great video!
You should do this same video for Johnny Unitas
If you go back and watch old games it's apparent that there were many more turnovers and just general mistakes. You don't even need to see the stats. They just hadn't really figured out how to do things efficiently back then. Players get more skilled as time goes on, this happens in every physical sport. If the athlete's from the past were magically born later on and played in today's leagues they would still be awesome.
they actually let the def play back then
ELWAY WILL ALWAYS BE THE GOAT IN MY EYES!
Go Broncos!
Hey Brandon 👋 you should do one of these for old gunslinger himself. Brett Farve.
Elway is very competitive and very athletic. Had he been born later and grew up in a culture like Mahommes has I think Elway would be just as effective as Mahommes, or even more so. But at the same time we can't dismiss some of the other amazing QB's of the past. Dan Marino having maybe the quickest, tightest and strongest throwing motion of any QB ever would definitely be setting records in the modern NFL just as he did in his time. True HoF transcendent talents would work well in any generation they were born in.
Best video ever
Another factor in comparing eras, especially in football, is the technology available for injury treatment and recovery. If Tom Brady had the knee injury in an earlier era, he would certainly be a Hall of Famer, but probably not in the GOAT discussion. Same thing for Marino and the Achilles tear.
As a Chiefs fan I'm not upset at the Elway/Mahomes comp.. I had never considered it until Kyle Shannahan mentioned it before SB LIV, and I could see some similarities in throwing styles. I think Elway would do well in today's NFL offenses.
I remember some of the contemporary evaluations of Elway after his 3rd Super Bowl loss. From what I remember, most of it centered around his focus and decision making skills. I think that’s pretty accurate. I also thought he was pretty mediocre in the short game. It seems like he had a weakness for knocking his receivers off their feet on slant and stop routes, and he seemingly avoided screens altogether.
that was more dan reeves play calling. It was run first, and if it was a passing play, TEs blocked and you had 2 maybe 3 targets. So Elway would always scramble out of the pocket, either running or buying time for a WR to get open on ANOTHER busted play. When Shanahan came with the West Coast offense, Elway had 4-5 targets every passing play and his short game(and long ball) improved immensely.
@@theendistheend123 Another indictment of Reeves' play-calling was that just about every pass route took 3-4 seconds for the WR to run (except for the infamous "shovel pass"), so if the defense blitzed, there was no "hot" receiver for a quick pass. In Reeves' system, WR blitz routes usually meant the WR just kept running longer than the play was supposed to go, to give Elway time to dodge the blitzers.
@@theendistheend123 yeah, I got in way over my head thinking that I was an expert on NFL quarterbacking. On a simplistic level, I think Elway was a bit like Tebow - not in terms of throwing the rock, but in terms of leadership style - they both kind of underperformed for the first 3 quarters and then caught fire for dramatic 4th quarter comeback. Maybe it was because Reeves had to open up the offense when things got dicey, maybe it was because John reveled in playing the hero. Maybe it was a little bit of both.
@@ThePipemiker I think it’s more coaching think ala Russ and Pete Carrol
@@youngf.l.y.1467 It’s always a bit of guesswork when it comes to why someone is good, or why someone is bad. Is it talent? Is it coaching? Is it some combination of the two? It seems like there are too many variables to get to a solid answer.
To be honest, I am more than a little biased against Elway, which is weird, because I was a Broncos fan from 10 years before he came along. Maybe I saw something in him that I didn’t like seeing in myself. I didn’t play football past middle school, but when I played soccer in high school, I kind of had his attitude: I tried to kick the ball as hard as I could when given half a chance, and didn’t really care who was on the receiving end.
Do a series of old QB and would they be good in present nfl
The math checks out.
