- After 10 years of doing painting tutorials for both Games Workshop and the Academy (www.duncanrhodes.com), I finally get to paint one of my absolute favourite miniatures of all time - A Bretonnian Knight of the Realm! With the imminent release of the Old World, we figured this was a great opportunity to paint this classic and beloved miniature from the Golden Age of Warhammer Fantasy.
We show you everything you need to know to paint your Bretonnian Knights of the Realm from start to finish. As usual, all the techniques shown here can be used on a wide range of miniatures in your Bretonnian army as well as your favourite medieval miniatures too. For the Lady! For Glory! For Bretonnia!

For Bretonnia!
Can't wait for Old world, for the Lady!
All I wanted when I was 14 was a Wood Elf dragon. When I finally got one, I stuck it together, got massively intimidated by the paint job and left it on a shelf forevermore.
Some say it still stalks the loft of a particular house in Nottingham...
My favorites are also the Knights of Bretonnia, and I am very much looking forward to painting the revived army. Most especially that new Prophetess on horseback. Only complaint about that model is that she is not riding sidesaddle.
Looking forward to it, to build an ogre kingdom army. Speaking of, is there any duncan ogre tutorials, or tutorials you'd recommend for them?
I am a veteran painter of Bretonnia with about 50-60 knights all of this era kit.
Each one has unique heraldry but shares from a common pallet of 6 colours (I use green, as it is my favorite) as you mentioned.
the common colours make the models "fit" as a cohesive force.
I'm delighted to see that these models are getting the love and attention they deserve.
The amount of smooth surface allows for really fun geometric shapes and let you make some fun and interesting heraldry.
To anyone just starting to paint Bretonnian knights, Be BOLD. These models can have a serious ugly phase as you move into the layer step just hold the line until the highlights and transfers are in place. Sometimes the most gaudy and clashing pallet can result in striking knights that you place front and center into your lance formations.
SOUND THE CHARGE!
For Glory, For the Lady, For Bretonnia!
It’s wonderful watching Duncan painting a miniature he’s really excited about.
It's like watching a British Mr. Rogers. Seriously, great video.
Nothing quite like seeing Duncan paint miniatures early in the morning (in the us). Also I hope that all you lovely people are doing well.
Thanks. We hope that you are doing great too!
You too!
😊 и тебе всего хорошего)
So hyped for Old World and feeling confident enough to actually paint a Bretonnian army. I was still a teenager when I first got into Fantasy and was way too intimidated to even attempt painting Bretonnians.
At first glance it appears difficult but its quite easy to be honest.
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA Well, yeah, I know that...now :D But 15, 16 years ago, there sadly wasn't someone telling me that and showing me the process like you and all the other amazing painters out there. I just get nostalgic when I see these minis because they were my absolute dream army back then, and when I got back into the hobby after Fantasy went away, I was kinda sad to (as it seemed) never get the chance to do them. So I'm just ecstatic to see them return and to know that for people coming into the hobby now, there are readily available resources to get over the anxiety of starting to paint!
I hear ya, mine are still on sprue in the 5th ed starter box along with the bowmen. I can't wait to start them and pick up the new Army box next year!
“And not some filthy peasant” your facial expression as you said that, brilliant.
I have been obsessed with the green Knight Mini since forever.
Me too. It's in my top 10 for sure!
There may never be a better miniature.
Never came around to painting him. Maybe now is the time.
I still have mine together with morgana painted by my late mother and they still look snazy after 15+ years 😲
TOW hype is real. Started working on my dream army in time for its release since a few months back. Painting orcs and goblins every day. ^^
Ohhhh... I love Orc's and Goblins
Idk man.. They're just bringing back mainly old sculpts! It won't get new, younger people like me into it, when they charge silly money for very old models
For Glory! For the Lady! For the King and for Bretonnia! This was and is my favourite miniature too. Since 2004 where i came in the world of Warhammer fantasy battles i love Bretonia. That let me dream of my time as Children.
*Sir Duncan Rhodes* ⚔
Aye ⚔️
I don't know if this is something you guys would be interested, but I would love to see you guys make a display board for miniatures at some point, like for armies on parade or something. Also seeing all of duncans bretonnians would be really cool too!
No ta bad idea :-)
When I started the hobby back in 1998, my first model ever was the bretonnian plastic knight (and his peasant bowmen) and when I reactivated the hobby almost 4 years ago, I knew that I had to paint one of them again. It also filled me with joy when I read about the announcement of Old World. For the Lady!
Awesome! For the Lady and for Glory!
Bretonnia was my first Warhammer Army ever, first stated collecting back in high school in ye olde 2006, my first love, and an expression of my love for all things Medieval that i never outgrew. So, it brings joy to see someone share such fondness for Bretonnia and its many knights and peasants. I'm looking forward to finally painting them in full multi colored pageantry they deserve. Thanks Duncan for an excellent video. For the Lady and Bretonnia!
I've never played a tabletop game, but I adore watching the painting process, and this video is utter class. Not only is it shot and edited in such a seamless way, your presentation and cadence os the cherry on top. Wholehearted respect my friend.
P.S. You come across like that one teacher at school who actually gives a shit lol
Bretonnian was was the origin of my life long devotion and love for the hobby. Way back in 93 i believe. I remember getting the Green Knight and just looking at him and the paint job in wonder and fear to attempt the studio paint job as a nine year old. Cheers Dunc.
Taken the plunge of buying my first miniature after a long time hesitating and I've gone with a Bretonnian knight. This video can couldn't have been *more* helpful!
Best tutorial EEEEEVER. Duncan really is the Bob Ross of miniature painting. I cant wait to see what the future wolds and the tutorials that you will do wen The Old World lunchs. I will pay that subscription, FOREVEEEEEER
Thanks 👍
Well i guess im gonna have to buy a knight now. I really love following along with your tutorials. I save them and pause as the steps go. Thank you SO much for all you do.
Awesome! My first and favorite army. Would you consider a future video just focused on planning Bretonnian heraldry and schemes? Thanks for all you do.
Absolutely
The KotR/KE kit was such a joy to see when it originally came out. As much as i loved the older plastic 2-in-a-box knights, these were miles ahead. They might be basic-looking by todays standard but i think they still hold up nicely
For the king, and for the Lady!
Nice colour scheme on the Bretonnian knight 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I plan on painting my general as my own family's heraldry when the Old world comes out. But i really cant wait to paint unique knights
Man, my first Warhammer models were the Bretonnian archers, so you can imagine the pain and joy to be a 14yo noob in the early 2000's trying to paint Bretonnian knights.
Thank you so much for this tutorial Duncan.
Awesome starter kit lol. Thanks for the kind comment
My word, that is an Oldhammer army to be jealous of.
Bretonnian models always captivated me as a child. I'm looking forward to picking them up for the Old World. Great video as always!
Thanks
The Master at work , it's always a pleasure to watch and learn .
I’m happy for you Dunc. I bet it sucked working at GW knowing your favourite faction was discontinued. I’m glad they’re back!
I don't know if I will ever play this version of the game but I wanna paint like a thousand Bretonnian Knights.
Do it for the Lady
Love seeing brighter colors, and I've been trying to get away from anything dark or grim dark. Thanks for the inspiration to go brighter.
You are so welcome!
I'm 31 n glad to see the old warhammer come full circle. definitely getting a box to paint and enjoy the old classics are the best ❤
Bring on the Old World!
Literal tears of joy. This release could not come quicker.
My favourite faction since I started with Warhammer Fantasy Battles 5th edition all the way back in 1996. The first Knight of the Realm I painted from that box was with red and blue heraldry with a yellow lion.
Green Knight next Duncan you know it needs to be done… The Lady wills it!
In reference to being ironic you're just now getting to do a tutorial for your favourite army, I can relate - I was a theatrical jouster for around fifteen years, yet never played WFB (though I played a heck of a lot of Mordheim :D ). I did paint up a Bretonnian warband for Mordheim in my own heraldric colours (black and white, shield heraldry sable on a pile argent an azure crescent), was much harder to recreate my stuff on that tiny scale!
didn't expect the f-bomb at 9:32 :D great video
2 things i'm looking forward to on this earth. Old World, and Light no Fire
Fantastic job on the painting as always !
However, the advice regarding the heraldry means you change the coat of arm from one side to the other.
A coat of arm is defined by which way things on it face. By switching it, you make it a completely different coat of arm.
These models are great. In my opinion Knights of the Realm kit was the kit which carried all the Bretonian army range back in the WFB era.
I just got a box of knights of the realm yesterday and they're amazing. I love the detail on them.
Flawless, as befitting such a knightly paragon. Fit to face all enemies of virtue and order.
Thanks for this tutorial, it's super helpful. I've wanted a Bretonnian army for decades and finally picked up the starter box yesterday. I'm intimidated by the painting, but it's time to dive in and enjoy the journey. Thanks again!
These new Flesh Eater Courts models are wild. Good stuff.
😂😂😂😂😂
Oh well, that's flippin' fantastic. Planned to do my Bretons in a "french medieval" paint scheme mainly in blue+red, with single figures using royal purple, monochrome blue and blue/white. This guide will serve me for most of my forces, though. Excellent stuff!
Awesome job, oh grand master of the two thin coats! 👍🏻👍🏻
I’m so glad I bought wave I and II from your kickstarter. Best money I’ve ever spent on paints.
I, as a French Knigh.. Man, am really happy with the colour scheme you chose for this noble Knight.
Merci
I'm so glad you made this guide! I've started assembling my Old World Bretonnian kit and this is extremely helpful in planning out how I'd like to tackle painting them.
It's fun to see people paint their favs. You're glowing with joy.
For the Lady!!!
And glory!
A nice Christmas relaxing watching the boss paint 🎨
Terrified of painting my Bretonnian army for the Old World, but will give it a go based on this video. Please do more Bretonnians as the Old World launches; for the Lady!
Absolutely glorious!
FOR THE LADY!
Glorious!
I just started taking a new found interest into TOW when they reveal the prophetess of the lady of the lake. That's a model that I'm looking forward to her release!
Us too
"My favourite of all time is a French knight"
Hand over your oaths to His Majesty King Charles III, one of these damn boats heading the right way.
I would love to see your take on painting the Brettonian Pegasus Knights.
What an incredibly beautiful model! I would use the same colours as well
The restrained use of white as a complementary color is my favorite part of this model. Fantastic.
Cheers from sir François of Normandie. Great vid.
You are most welcome
Nice!! I'll probably stick to Grail Knights and the small heraldry on knights of the realm when I do my Bretonnia army.
Otherwise I'd never get the army finished lol
I know right
As a fellow Brettonian affictionato, collector and player, this brings so much joy to my heart is HURTS. Thank youuu!!
Thank you , DRPA .
🐺Loupis Canis .
Thank you 🐺🐺🐺🐺
I love your videos. They are so relaxing. It is thanks to you I got into painting miniatures. Unfortunately as a healthcare worker I am so busy I haven’t been able to do it recently. Keep up the quality work and thank you for the videos.
I remember of your bretonia Army Long Time ago in the white dwarf. They looked awesome. 🙂
I've been unsure if I'll be able to get the old world box on release, but I'm SUPER excited that Bretonnia is the starting "Order" faction! (I consider the Tomb Kings another SHADE of "Order", but they are so hostile to outsiders that I only include them with "Order" because they are anti-ending the world, and they're not prone to invading other's territory... You leave THEM alone, they leave YOU alone... At least from what I know about Settra...)
I have a huge soft spot for knights in shining armor, and since Bretonnia is all that along with pegasus knights, trebuchets, men-at-arms with billhooks, as well as mighty damsels on unicorns...
For Ze Lady!!!
(Seriously, I can't WAIT for "The Old World", and I hope they one day make expansions for the Lizardmen, Druchii, (even though I loath Druchii...), Skaven, and the other factions that have not yet been teased...)
Also, do you personally think that "Two Thin Coats" is better paint than citadel? I noticed that you use it a lot, and I have only ever experienced the 50 cent Walmart paints before I slowly moved up to citadel. (I STILL use those cheap paints a lot because of how expensive Citadel paints are...)
OLD WORLD! Been waiting 15 years for this!
Yahoooooo!!!!! Us too
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I took my son to the very last LA GamesDay and bought his first Greenskin army that day. He was 8. Then... the dark times...
I was excited for old world, and finally getting a Bretonnian army. Seeing Duncan excited and then seeing this absolutely stunning modern interpretation of an iconic model has sky rocketed my excitement! Thanks for an awesome video!
Our pleasure
The quests for the grail shall begin anew!
That reminds me that I still have an unfinished Warmaster Bretonia army in a box in the basement....
Really awesome tutorial on painting knights! Thank you! I was just hoping that you would also show how to properly put on transfers like you did without the transfers showing off the plastic outlines after they dry.
I love Fantasy so much, it is by far my favourite setting. Out if curiosity if you’re willing and able to answer were you ever upset when you were at GW and they discontinued Fantasy? Did they ever get mad if people mentioned it?
Bretonnia will ride again!
For the Lady!
Thanks for this Duncan! I always hated painting horses which is why I tend to have so few in my Empire army. Even though, I have been told, I'm pretty good at it.
Awesome job. Bretonnians are a cool army. I much prefer the old 5th edition models and have gathered quite a collection.
Absolutely beautiful! I’ve been holding onto my Bretonnians since I got them during 6th edition, and have been slowly painting all of my unpainted minis to be ready for the Old World release.
I hope you do an army showcase so we can see your painted Bretonnians units all together.
Not what I was expecting for this week’s tutorial but man I’m glad it turned out to be this! Excellent work on both this and the tomb king model!
I loved this! Would love to see more Bretonnians :-)
Me too
Excellent. I think us Bret never saw this coming.
Old World stuff looks AMAZING
Love to see your mini favorites out Duncan. I cant wait for getting mine in Februari
My Empire Army that's been left in boxes and on Sprues since FB died is actually going to get put together!
Epic Classic Mini. Thx for that
Duncan may be the only person I know that's ever been this excited by Bretonnians but I love it
I sure am
Getting me excited to finally dip my toes into Bretonnia when it comes out!
Cool
Brilliant stuff. Now I'm even more excited for the Old World and making a new Bretonnian army
love watching your videos and loving the bretonia!
Loved this video, such an iconic mini!
It sure is!
Absolutely gorgeous. An army of that on the table would look amazing. Ride well Francois!
Super satisfying watching this miniature being filled in.
Please make a showcase of your 3000p. bretonian army.
We may just do that :-)
Amazing job, Lukas
Interesting that out of all the amazing Bretonnians you chose the 6e version of the plastic knight over, say, one of the 5e Perry questing or realm knights etc. Thats a weird favourite but hey, thats great!~
Amazing!
Looks fantastic!
That’s beautiful work! Also it’s fantastic when Duncan just starts quoting Bretonnia lore like he did lol.
My favorite army as well. Glad they've decided to start the old world with Bretonnia.
This looks fantastic. Definitely going for this scheme, when the Old World is re-released, for my Bretonnians. I have always liked these colors in the artworks. Thanks a lot for the video.
I so can't wait for The Old World, so keen for new Bretonian models.
Awesome video Ser Duncan, sat and watched it with my month old boy and i think he loved it as well
A hobbyist in the making 👍
@@DuncanRhodesDRPA I hope so lol
Great video as always, Duncan! That said, I find with this kind of bright heraldic scheme that it's easier to manually paint in low tones and black line with acrylic paint, rather than washing
