What If Aemma Lived? (House Of The Dragon)

  • Like her son Baelon, whom we have also covered on this channel, the death of Queen Aemma Arryn was one in a series of unfortunate events that left a hole in the House Targaryen that allowed vipers to snake their way in and ultimately cause a war that forever altered the trajectory of the house of the dragon. But what if on that fateful day her death had never come to pass?

    Love these!
    Of course if Rhaenyra doesn't have a brother and isn't declared the heir it'll be hard for Otto to rally support against Daemon succeeding Viserys. By all precedent he'd be the rightful heir and since Rhaenyra likes him she probably wouldn't contest this. How peaceful the reign of Daemon I would be is another matter.

      Daemon would not be rightful heir. Daughters over uncles. Just like Vaemond still wouldn’t get driftmark due to his two nieces. But in the books, Vaemond was Corlys’s nephew. So he would have a claim then. But now as they changed the relationship between the two men.

      @@lemonadelemon1960 Sorry I didn't phrase that well. What I meant was the very recent precedent of the Council that made Viserys king excluded Rhaenys even though she was the daughter of the king's elder son. This combined with Westerosi suspicions of female rulers would have made it hard to muster a case for Rhaenyra. There was nothing to make her claim stronger than Rhaenys'. If they followed the daughter's over uncles logic Rhaenys' claim was stronger than Rhaenyra's. If you accepted the Council's verdict as a precedent Daemon's claim was stronger than either of them..

    What if Alicents attack on Rhaenyra had been fatal? Say the blade cut was more to the left cutting Rhaenyras neck or heart so that she could not be saved? What would Viserys do with Alicent after she straight up murders his daughter and heir? Would he name Aegon heir or Jacaerys?

      This is the only answer. Daemon would kill them all. It would be a massacre with the greens against every single person in that castle. And a good fighter Cripsy may be but as we saw during this scene he can certainly be stopped if up against the right person. The Hightowers in Oldtown won't even be able to object to the ending of that branch because Alicent attacked and killed the heir without any physical provocation. I know many people are team green and I see both sides but if Alicent, in her justifiable anger, had murdered the heir to the throne in cold blood nobody would be able to save her from the consequences @@mellowenglishgal

      At the very least, Daemon maims Allicent if not straight up kill her which would force Viserys to snap out of the shock and get Daemon to stand down. Daemon would be put on trial and if Otto didnt get murdered, he would use this as an opportunity to properly get rid of Daemon, its just that now its deeply personal. Alternatively, Otto's son would be the one to try and get Daemon executed so he can avenge his father and sister

      @getolde7966 Před 2 měsíci +15

      Easy, she‘d be the literal undisputed heir. Sure, they‘d still be some troubles with Daemon, but there‘d be no doubt that Rhaenyra is the undisputed heir. Viserys would still remarry, as he needs a spare too, in case anything happened to the original heir, but it would be made very clear to Aegon that he most likely won’t get to rule. Also, Otto may have pushed for Alicent to become Rhaenyra‘s wife, as they‘d be very close in age.

  • @Alejojojo6
    @Alejojojo6 Před 2 měsíci +6

    The heir would most likely be Daemon. Or Rhaenyra, being the only descendant left. So having a female Queen would be the only option. I think though Daemon would be queen with Rhaenyra by her side as wife. Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey would most likely never been born, and thus Aegon III and Viserys II would have been the ones following just as normal.

    Providing that Otto wanted to keep Daemon as far away from the Iron Throne as possible, he would support Rhaenyra's claim. Otto could have secured a marriage between Rhaenyra and one of his or his brother's sons and make sure that the Hightowers keep a strong position at court being the in-laws to the future Queen.

    In this scenario, do you think it is possible that Viserys would take a second wife? I think Corlys may push Laena towards him still due to Aemma not having children and there being no male heir and his family being of Valyrian descent. The realm was prospering and loved the Targaryens, is it possible the people of Westeros would accept this decision hoping for a male heir?

    • @TheEmpyreanSpeaks
      @TheEmpyreanSpeaks  Před 2 měsíci +6

      In all honesty I don’t see that happening for a couple reasons. One because Viserys loves Aemma too much. I mean years after her death he never got over her even when he got remarried and had more kids. I think he’d see it as slap in the face to her by keeping her around while he slept with someone else. There’s also the idea that even though the realm loves the Targaryens they’ve risen against them before for things like this. When Maegor The Cruel had his reign of terror he had six wives, marrying multiple women at the same time and him marrying multiple women made him some enemies. So Viserys, unlike his brother Daemon, would probably do everything thing he could to distance himself from the image of Maegor. So I don’t think he’d risk it. Especially since his character pretty much makes it his mission to avoid conflict.

      @smittypwnz Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@TheEmpyreanSpeaks Yeah I think Viserys would be apprehensive to do this, he doesn't want to step on anybody's toes and this obviously would have some backlash albeit likely less then the Faith Militant rising up against Aenys/Maegor. Obviously his love for Aemma is huge but if she is adamant on not having another child, I think Viserys's dragon dreams might push him over the edge and could lead him to the mindset of taking another wife. Not to mention I can see Daemon and Corlys being little devils on his shoulders badgering him to do so and backing this. Curious to see how the lords of Westeros would respond, I am sure the smallfolk would riot but I think they might get over it eventually after the heir grows up, riots are put down and the fear of dragons.
      Maybe Aemma continues to think she failed Viserys and her duty as Queen/Wife which may even lead her to looking the other way for Viserys to marry another. Like you said the Targaryen line was very thin at the time., so desperate measures might have been in order to provide more heirs.

    Viserys did not ‘sacrifice’ Aemma. The baby was breach and she was going to die, regardless. The choice Viserys was presented with was only whether or not to do the ‘c-section’ in an attempt to save the baby or just let her continue to suffer until they BOTH die. Yes, the ‘surgery’ was AWFUL and SHE was not given a choice, which is beyond wrong, but it just blows my mind how many people don’t understand the situation even though the maester clearly stated it.

      Not necessarily, you could mutilate the baby's body and take it out piece by piece, that's what the midwife of my grandma's little town had to do once.
      Thats why the sept asks Viserys to make that choice: because there IS a choice, otherwise they would save the king the pain of taking this choice (now, it's still posible for Aemma to die of infection, but given the high mortality of infants it's difficult to know who would have a better chance).
