Daemon is the closest thing we’ll ever see to a true Valyrian during the height of their empire unless we get a show or something about Valyria. I think that’s one of the biggest reasons George wrote him is to show us what a true prototypical Valyrian would’ve been like.

It's like David's version of Inside Out.
1:50 Daemon having murdered his wife isn't even a rumor in the books. They blame him for nearly every death in that entire book, both secret murders and regular accidents, but nobody in the book blames him for killing Rhea. She was literally alive for *nine fucking days* after falling off her horse an cracking her skull, and she was presumably conscious at least for some of them, if by the end of those 9 days she felt well enough to say "OK, I'm getting out of bed now."
The fact that she was laid up for over a week and then got up and almost immediately dropped dead tracks very strongly with how hemorrhaging inside the skull actually works. Louis VIII of France only became King because this exact thing happened to his older brother; he was thrown from his horse while hunting, cracked his skull, lingered on bed rest for about two weeks, and then he got out of bed and just dropped dead a few hours later. Once you start moving around, all the clots from the hemorrhaging break loose and kill you, whereas when you were just laying in bed the blood was just pooling in one area.
Not that it makes Daemon muuuuch better, but my first time around watching the series, I received Daemon as committing a mercy kill. Like she was a paraplegic so he decided to end it for him and her one time. Like I said, not much better, but better than cold clooded murder. I didnt read the scene as him coming to kill her... or else why come unarmed and unarmoured?
I think in the showrunners' following of their goal to whitewash both Alicient and Rhaenyra to make them more palatable to the wider (read dumber) television audience to better create a hashtag teamblack hashtag teamgreen hashtag girlpower much in the vein of twilight for viral marketing purposes, Otto and Daemon had to shoulder the sins of their female counterparts from the book. While I understand the book can get away with ambiguity on characters and actions and the show cannot, it still leaves me wondering the wisdom of the extent of these decisions. I think it makes Rhaenyra more boring, although Alicient's character seems somewhat improved if more inconsistent in the show. It is one of those questionable decisions in season 1 that I think may cause problems later on along with the not killing of Laenor and the universally derided rework of Aegon's coronation, much in the same way the omissions of Lady Stoneheart and Aegon 6 in the main series.
Not to mention everyone would have noticed his week long trip back and forth on his big ass red dragon. If it had happened it wouldn't have been a rumor!
You're forgetting that the book (Fire and Blood) itself tells the reader over and over that it's an in-world history book of sorts, written decades after the events by multiple unreliable sources. Even GRRM himself has said on multiple occasions that if anything is canon, it's the show, as the show represents us actually watching the events unfold 'in real time,' so to speak.
@@carastone3473 yeah no. They aged half the cast up and that alone ruins any chance of this being more canonical. I get George's point, but I don't accept the show being anything but a loose dramatization of events with as much "historical accuracy" in universe as the Tudors. If I want my history I'll go to the *source materials* which is Fire and Blood.
Viserys is the Politician and Daemon is the warrior. Your are right in that Viserys could have kept Daemon under control by keeping him busy with other matters. One the best things Corlys did was call upon Daemon to help him deal the Crab feeder in the stepstones.
I’m not sure Vissy had the patience and subtlety required of a politician, he’s too rudderless and he is not a good manipulator. His policies are basically summed up as the “path of least resistance”...
Daemon is definitely a Warrior but not a true Knight as he has little honour, he can and will fight dirty and go to any lengths to win. Together they might have made a formidable team ruling the Kingdom, if V managed to temper D and D accepted reason and choosing more wisely which battles were worth fighting instead of blowing hot at every issue. If you combined the best parts of each, that would’ve been a solid lead for the Kingdom I’d love to see. IMHO
Thank. You. People get what Daemon wants twisted. He wanted Viserys approval. He craved it, and it ruled his emotions. Daemon wouldn't last two years as King as it's too mundane.

So far your commercial ads are the only ones that put a smile on my face! Typical I will just skip ahead when people have internal ads in their videos. I pay a monthly subscription to CZcams to avoid CZcams’s ads. So I tend to get irritated when I have to watch one anyways. But I do understand that creators need to find additional sources of income. And your creative approach to the situation makes it fun instead of irritating.👍
This and a 'history of the 18th century' channel are really the only ones where I always watch the ads without skipping any of it. Both use fun characters and a satirical tone. Others can learn from this! Ads are simply a reality of running a channel and I personally have no problem watching an in-video advert when they're done in a classy, humourous way like this. With the corporate ads that YT inserts themselves, I tend to just mute them.
Ryan George does pretty funny sketch ads too. But he's a comedian, soooo...

This vid got me wondering whether Valyrian history inspired Daemon to create the Gold Cloaks, being he's such a fan and obsessive. Maybe the old dragonlords trained and maintained urban security forces and massive bloody clampdowns were a common event in the streets of Valyria. It sort of fits what we know about them. And no one else in Westeros ever came up with anything similar. It's like Daemon read about it somewhere and then applied it. Which explains his sheer glee.
Watching the 'Styggai' videos makes me think of Valyria really being the true heir to that original horrific evil

in the books she's 14. It's hard to tell how old they're supposed to be on the show. is it said?
@@DavidLightbringer Yeah. In episode 3, Aegon II was turn a year-old with Alicent far along with Halaena in her stomach. When Daemon and Rhaenyra spoke at the Godswood in episode 4, Daemon says, "You've matured yourself these last four years, Princess." And remember, months passed between episodes 1 and 2.
That change is kind of annoying( to declare a fictional character is 18) ,this is basically for a modern sensitive audience. I mean Cersei asked Sansa “Have you bled yet.” The actress playing Sansa was underage for our times, but not for when Westeros was based on, and she married Tyrion ( an adult man).
Now young Rhaenyra played by and actress on her early 20s being and it was declared to be 18 in Westeros, kind of old for a different time 😂 being older than Laena, same age as Alicent who already was married with a child, and people still lost their minds.
Cole and Harwin were not young kids too, only Laenor was younger.
Even when my mother got married women got married at the age of 14 where I am from, ( thankfully my generation had a different norm and I got married at the age of 27, so imagine a fantasy based in a long time ago…

The problem with Daemon is the what ifs are so strong. Daemon would have absolutely served his brother, but he also would have served himself, and to what end we do not know. Yet that 1 change would have blocked Otto's influence, preventing the war. So whatever crimes Daemon would do in the chance he swings more towards Maegor, really wouldn't outweigh the extinction of Dragons and the death of thousands.
You know what... I genuinely love rewatching your content. Moreso than most channels that I'm subscribed to. Your content keeps me focused both at home and at work. No matter how many times I've seen the video, there's not a chance in hell I will ever skip your ad reads. You're fucking great dude!

Daemon, Aemond and Maegor all share an interesting characteristic. They are all powerful brothers of weaker kings. Based on their personalities, you would expect they would try to usurp their brothers' thrones, and yet they do not. They advise for decisive or even cruel actions, bonk heads constantly, but never make a move on the throne while their brothers are alive. Out of love, duty or lack of entitlement, either way, it is a subverted trope that I really appreciate.

A what if episode would be very interesting with this reign. What if Daemon is made right hand following Aemma’s death? What if Aemma was not so passive in her role as Queen but took after her grandmother in fortifying political alliances in marriages? What if Viserys never remarried? What if Laenor got to travel far longer with his father and Seasmoke as heir apparent lord of tides instead of marrying Rhanerya?

The choking scene kinda ruined Daemon’s character arc. Could’ve been improved by either omitting it or making it clearer with the dialogue leading up to that move that Daemon is super POD’d because he is actually mad at how Viserys ruled and doesn’t want R to make the same mistakes and he’s trying to snap her into fighting for her life and their children’s lives. That would be more in character.
I feel like for Aaemond in terms of stepping up and doing what needed to be done for his family happened later . Initially when he claimed Vhager it was because he wanted a dragon . Not to say some of that protect the family might have been in the back of his mind . But he was teased so badly for not having a dragon and always putting himself in danger trying to claim a dragon by going to the dragon pit .In the beginning Aaemond was just Aaemond to me it wasn’t until he got older u could see some similarities to Daemon . You can tell he has that second syndrome to when he goes to find his brother who ran away because he didn’t want to be king.

orders the beheading of a child, plays cat and mouse with Armond, refuses to make peace without killing literally all his nephews and other family first,
hangs out with an underage girl for inconspicuous reasons (oh, and asks her to help him jump his newphew), ignores his Niece-Wife and Queen, and then jumps off a dragon realizing he was definitely gonna die since he couldn't beat his young nephew and still live to tell the tale...
*and he often refused to elaborate*
Guy was insane. I don't like him much for many reasons (claims to love his family, yet works extremely hard to ensure the death of literally half of all Targaryens), but I admit he's a wild and dangerous man
Otto is an icon. I, personally, would not want dragon overlords so someone working to set the infrastructure which would bring the end to the tyrants is kind of a baddie. Idk why he’s considered a snake. He’s fighting for Westeros.
People tend to focus from the perspective of their favourite characters, rather than the smallfolk.

It was made clear in the episode in a quick one liner that Rhaenyra had already turned 17 at the time of the brothel.
David always uses the book ages, I think (except for Alicent obv.). Show ages are a bit iffy anyways. Rhaenyra should be (almost) 19 in ep 4 already. 14 ep1, 15 ep 2, 17/18 ep 3, 18/19 ep 4. There is another year passing between ep3 and ep 4, Aegon is 3 instead of 2 and Helaena looks about a year old. Almost nobody adds that.

Good vid! But in the 6 year timeskip, his daughter Rhaena (sp?) was on Dragonstone but Daemon couldn’t help her find an unclaimed dragon? He must have known that the war was coming, and since he read all about the dragon lords in Pentos could have had her already riding one well before
