How It Works: Husqvarna ST200 Series Drive System ST224, ST227, ST230

  • In this video we take a look inside the drive system on a Husqvarna friction disk drive snow blower. The friction disk drive system in this snow blower is pretty similar to the set up that most other brands such as Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Ariens, Simplicity, etc use in their snow blowers. But these Husqvarna units have a steering assist feature as part of their drive system. This feature is very helpful in the operation of the these machines as it makes them much easier to run compared to older units that had to be manhandled and muscled around through the snow to get them to turn. A lot of people seem to think that the steering assist is done by applying a brake to one side of the drive system like on a farm tractor with independent brakes for each rear wheel. That is not the case. This system is actually very simple because it utilizes 2 planetary gears on the friction disk shaft. The concept of steering assist on snow blowers has been around for several years, but is something that was mostly found on track drive snow blowers or higher end units. But tit has now become a standard feature on most residential units and without a big increase in price to consumers. If you're looking into purchasing a new snow blower then steering assist of some sort should be the first feature you look for on your next machine. Trust us, it really does make that big of a difference! #SnowBlower #HowItWorksVideo

    Excellent video, very helpful. The right hand bearing on the upper drive shaft (the one with the friction disc) fell out, and I wasn't sure what the Trunnion Bearing Assembly was, how it worked, and what it connected to. After viewing this video, I understand how the whole thing works, and how to reconnect the Trunnion Bearing and repair the snowblower.
    Many thanks!

    Amazing video, great explanation, I just bought a 2021 redesigned model (ST224) and what you explained about the gears and the transmission, still applies to the newer model, the main change seems to be the the plastic panel on top is now replaced with a metal one, other than that it still is a beast of a snow blower and so far I have no regrets.

    Thank you so much for this video - I was happy to learn about releasing the planetary gears!! I have been pushing that snowblower into my garage to avoid the fumes (while running), now I will just roll it. Yay I was looking for help adjusting the tension on the on the traction drive control lever. You didn't cover it here but I did see another video so I will be attempting to adjust the turnbuckle therefore adjusting tension as the handle takes too much effort to push down - causing my hand to cramp up.

    I Love my Husky snowblower! I have thrown more snow than Tony Montana. It chews through everything hard pack, light. i have an st227P and have put this machine through some pretty hard use, the only thing that it needed was new belts, amazing snowblowers!

    Worst snow blower ever. The warranty repair man tried to say it was my fault but I proved him wrong. Returned mine three times and my 4th one is having the drive problem already. It's not even a year old and only cleaned the driveway a dozen times at most. Going to work on it now instead of returning it. Watched your video to make sure I didn't run into unexpected issues. Thanks...great job!

      Thank you! A lot of people think that this system works like an old farm tractor and it is applying a brake to one side or the other. As the video shows, it simply puts the side that is activated into neutral.

    I have an st224 non power steering model. On snow there really isn’t a need for power steering. The turns with ease. On dry ground different story! Although having more mechanical parts is good to avoid because on dry ground it’s just to get it stored away

  • @hresto1
    @hresto1 Před rokem

    All ST224 prior to 2020 have an all plastic speed shifting control console that has a very high failure rate. If you are buying a used one, look underneath the console where the shift cable attaches. If it's all plastic, don't buy it. On cold days the plastic becomes brittle and if you shift to high speed, the amount of pressure on the cable mount will crack and leave you with a blower that only runs in reverse. There is no new improved replacement console with reinforced metal for the ST224. They only offer the all plastic replacement which will eventually fail again. The ST224 has been discontinued.

    No one talks about how to replace the friction disc. That’s the easy part once you somehow squeeze the hex shaft out. This would be a good, useful video.

    Awesome video my man!
    I have the st227p... question. There seems to be alot of slop in the discharge chute. The lever and cables work great however after you aim the direction of the snow with the lever, there is play in the direction from right to left. Is there a hack or adjustment to stop that play so the snow goes where i point it with the lever? Thatway i dont have to operate w one hand on handle and one hand on the chute lever. Thankyou)))

    What does it mean on this particular blower when
    The trigger levers are naturally engaged in the planetary gears and the wheels won’t spin? I have (to squeeze the trigger’s) in order for the wheels to move by the force of the friction disc.

    I have a T227. My biggest complaint is the plastic shroud that connects the chute to the impeller discharge area, why did Husqvarna make that plastic? Our road and driveway are stone, not 3/4" and minus but everything from baseball size rocks to sand. Every so often a large rock gets shot out from the impeller and hits that plastic part and after enough hits it has to be replaced. I'm on my 3rd plastic part in 2 years, why wouldn't they make that metal like Ariens has? Not the end of the world to replace but downtime is downtime. I'd like to see that changed or have them design a metal replacement part.

      Sounds like you should take it to a Husqvarna dealer and get them to check it out. If it has that low of run time on it there's a good chance it could be something covered under warranty.

    • @DirtyBuffaloProductions
      @DirtyBuffaloProductions  Před 3 lety +1

      It could be, but if the friction disk works to drive it in reverse then it should also drive it forward. It could be a combination of the friction disk needing replaced and the aluminum plate it runs against needing to be cleaned off.

    Theses things are a piece of junk. Sold my Murray for this. Guy I sold the Murray to has a bigger driveway. Murray still running. My 230p doing a small subdivision driveway. The thing eats all the belts. The plastic housing on top breaks where the cables are on. Just got that fixed. Guess what drive belt shot. I am just going to junk the thing. Either get a simplicity or aerons. Post office would not even drop a package off. Amount of snow on my concrete driveway.
