  • Some local school districts have installed stop-arm cameras to identify drivers who put students at risk. At least 15 states have passed laws allowing for those cameras to lead to automatic citations. But Arizona is not one of them.

While I understand citations via camera has been deemed “unconstitutional due to invasion of privacy” at stop lights, this is a completely different scenario. This isn’t about simply running a red light, speeding and other basic traffic violations. This is about common knowledge knowing damn well children are getting off the bus and walking directly into traffic. Some kids have to walk in front of the bus as their home isn’t on the same side as the door. Some kids are very young and have not developed the concept to always look for oncoming vehicles. I fully support more action taken to catch these drivers and not simply send a ticket, but to have more aggressive charges as I feel like more people wouldn’t want to risk catching a case. I personally knew someone who almost lost their 1st grader due to a driver in a hurry, intentionally sped by and passed the bus and hitting this child. The boy was thrown into the air, suffered a bad head injury and endured many broken bones but thankfully did not pass away. I’ve witnessed many drivers ignoring a bus stopping to unload children but, again, thankfully no child was hurt.

i agree, we can make an exception for this. i wish my bus had cameras, one that actually were quality and could catch the license plate.
i also wish all my kids paid better attention -- it's actually my younger ones that follow these rules better simply because most of them are eager to please the authority figure. i say that, but my elementary students are english second language kids whose upbringing tends to be better than, ah, certain others.

      @letsdiscussitoversometea8479 Před měsícem

@@RafTheDude well, I'm not in the USA - I'm from the UK.
In this country, we have what's known as the "Green Cross Code".
It's a set of instructions that children are generally taught at a very young age for how to cross the road safely.
I was 6 when I was taught how to cross the road using this method.
I was given an audio cassette by my mother containing a "story" of a boy who was very carefree about crossing the road, and very nearly ends up being hit by a passing car.
When I was around either 14 or 15, I irresponsibly (though in my defence without clarity) crossed the road in front of a bus I'd just gotten off.
The next thing I knew, there was the front end of a silver Honda Accord charging right at me.
I think I ended up with my hands on the bonnet - that's how close it was.
From that point on, I said to myself "Right. I'm going to cross BEHIND the bus from now on." That's never changed.
At no time did it ever ONCE cross my mind, that the driver was in any way at fault for his (or her - I've always assumed it was a man) actions.
To have expectations of other road users is *extremely* foolish under any circumstances.
One further other reason for this, is the possibility of manufacturer error of the vehicles themselves.
A documentary on CZcams called "The Quality Connection", produced by British Leyland, shows the types of accidents that can occur anywhere in the construction process if a car.
Attributing "blame" for something entirely unpreventable is an element I suspect you're not really prepared to contend with.
This is why being responsible for one's own actions is crucial.
I imagine countries such as Japan are even more adherent to pedestrian responsibility.
The idea of "blame" simply isn't something I concern myself with - genuine common sense on the other hand...

This infuriates so much because there is just TOO MANY drivers like this not just near schools, but at stoplights and stop intersections. I walk to my part time job since it’s close by and almost every time I cross the street at a stoplight and im halfway there, there’s always a car that makes a turn hoping they can go by before I finish crossing. I’ve had a handful of times where a car passes and i’m literally a foot away from it and could possibly get hit with the side mirrors in the face. This is unacceptable. Pedestrians will ALWAYS have the right-of-way.

Many years ago, I was driving a fully loaded 3/4 ton truck down a VERY steep hill. I was geared down and only going about 25 mph. I came around the corner and just KNEW the bus was going to stop and let kids off. Sure enough, the sign came out and lights started flashing. This was WAY before anti-lock brakes and all four wheels were locked was I tried to stop and laid on the horn. I remember being so scared I would hit a kid. I was looking for where to put the truck (the ditch was starting to look very good) when the driver retracted the sign and waved me through. I stopped anyway, with about 10 feet to spare. And then waited for the kids to cross. The driver yelled through he window "Nice stop. That had both of us cringing...". I still cannot believe how many people just do not care. Drivers are trained to spot these conditions and hold the kids back. They have a tough job, we do not have to make it more difficult. This driver was on top of things. Totally awesome.

My friend works at a school and he used to be a crossing guard after 3 months he quit. He had parents cuss and scream at him because they didn't like what he was instructing him them to do. He had parents drive up into the driveway on their cell phones not paying attention where kids could walk out in front of their car and he was told he couldn't say anything to them? He would stand in the middle of the road with a stop sign being held up and he would keep walking closer to the lane as the people literally would drive around him and he got fed up and said no more.

Should be mandatory law nationwide that if you run a school bus stop you lose your license for a year, the next time two years, the third time you lose it permanently. Hit a kid running the school bus stop twenty years to life in prison. Same as using a gun to kill someone.

Put a secondary crossing arm (like the one on the front of school busses) that opens up in the lane next to the drivers side, that way oncoming traffic literally has to stop or it'll hit a metal bar.

@@danielmerrick5290 I don’t think that’s necessary. Drivers will have enough injuries with a metal bar collision to teach them a lesson for good. Also, the metal bar itself is dangerous enough and all spikes will do is increase the risk of bodily harm.

People these days don't know how to drive! If you see a stop sign, you STOP!

I used to drive a school bus in a rural area and most drivers were pretty good about obeying the stop sign. But one time an arrogant adult bicyclist went whizzing past my bus on the right side as I was discharging two students to the driveway of their home. The first kid left the bus and made it safely into her driveway, but the bicyclist ripped by just as the boy was starting to exit the bus. Fortunately he wasn't hit. After that event, I always stopped the bus at an angle in such a manner that bicyclists would HAVE to run their bike into the 30 inch deep ditch at the edge of the roadway and crash into the driveway culvert to be able to get around the bus. I had no takers.

Install longer stop arms, 6 to 10 feet arms like those at railroads crossing.

Yes!!! and put it on a big spring, so if they hit it, it will scratch down the side of their car and not break off.

A child calling grown ups "jerks".
If you were my son you'd be taught - not only how to cross the road safely, but also to *listen* to what other people who have lived years/decades longer than you, would have to say.
You might actually learn something *valuable.*
