Drivers caught on camera ignoring school bus stop signs

- Some local school districts have installed stop-arm cameras to identify drivers who put students at risk. At least 15 states have passed laws allowing for those cameras to lead to automatic citations. But Arizona is not one of them.
I don't understand how people are willing to risk a CHILD'S life just to avoid a few minutes of waiting. When it comes to such a young life we should do everything we can to protect them.

The reason fines never work is because they aren't progressive. The fine should not be a set amount. If you make $200,000 a year, a $1,000 fine isn't going to hurt you at all.

While I understand citations via camera has been deemed “unconstitutional due to invasion of privacy” at stop lights, this is a completely different scenario. This isn’t about simply running a red light, speeding and other basic traffic violations. This is about common knowledge knowing damn well children are getting off the bus and walking directly into traffic. Some kids have to walk in front of the bus as their home isn’t on the same side as the door. Some kids are very young and have not developed the concept to always look for oncoming vehicles. I fully support more action taken to catch these drivers and not simply send a ticket, but to have more aggressive charges as I feel like more people wouldn’t want to risk catching a case. I personally knew someone who almost lost their 1st grader due to a driver in a hurry, intentionally sped by and passed the bus and hitting this child. The boy was thrown into the air, suffered a bad head injury and endured many broken bones but thankfully did not pass away. I’ve witnessed many drivers ignoring a bus stopping to unload children but, again, thankfully no child was hurt.
i agree, we can make an exception for this. i wish my bus had cameras, one that actually were quality and could catch the license plate.
i also wish all my kids paid better attention -- it's actually my younger ones that follow these rules better simply because most of them are eager to please the authority figure. i say that, but my elementary students are english second language kids whose upbringing tends to be better than, ah, certain others.
our routes are designed to pick up on the resident side as much as possible. they're also made by computers, so there's always something left to be desired in real life, so there's always some tweaking that needs to happen.

It's literally only 5 seconds, wherever you're going is not that important.
Many just don't care and start flipping at buses.
Sometimes it’s longer, it really depends how long it takes for kids to get on or off the bus, in some states you have to wait for the bus to resume motion so it could be 1 to 2 minutes in some cases. I don’t illegally pass stopped school buses and don’t think it’s ok to do so but for me I would be annoyed if I had to stop because I wouldn’t want to have stop from going 35 to 40 (or however fast I’m going) when I’m not even in the intersection, especially if I’m on the other side on a road with 4 or more lanes
@@thevarietykid686 I know it can be longer, I wasn't using 5 seconds as the exact time limit for all bus stops like that. My point is that there's no reason for you to be passing a bus like that especially when they have their sign up. From what I know most buses have a set schedule so most people tend to know roughly when a bus is going to be somewhere. So I feel like you should either leave earlier or look for another way around. Those people are putting a child's life in danger and in the case some children have lost their lives because of people like that, but I do get what you're saying though.

@letsdiscussitoversometea8479 Why is it the responsibility of a young individual to remind an adult not to cross a stop sign and red flashing lights?
The question is best directed at people operating 3,000 pound machines.
"Were you ever taught to watch out for young kids at a bus with a stop sign and flashing lights?"
I swear, pedestrian blaming in America is sickening.
@@RafTheDude well, I'm not in the USA - I'm from the UK.
In this country, we have what's known as the "Green Cross Code".
It's a set of instructions that children are generally taught at a very young age for how to cross the road safely.
I was 6 when I was taught how to cross the road using this method.
I was given an audio cassette by my mother containing a "story" of a boy who was very carefree about crossing the road, and very nearly ends up being hit by a passing car.
When I was around either 14 or 15, I irresponsibly (though in my defence without clarity) crossed the road in front of a bus I'd just gotten off.
The next thing I knew, there was the front end of a silver Honda Accord charging right at me.
I think I ended up with my hands on the bonnet - that's how close it was.
From that point on, I said to myself "Right. I'm going to cross BEHIND the bus from now on." That's never changed.
At no time did it ever ONCE cross my mind, that the driver was in any way at fault for his (or her - I've always assumed it was a man) actions.
To have expectations of other road users is *extremely* foolish under any circumstances.
One further other reason for this, is the possibility of manufacturer error of the vehicles themselves.
A documentary on CZcams called "The Quality Connection", produced by British Leyland, shows the types of accidents that can occur anywhere in the construction process if a car.
Attributing "blame" for something entirely unpreventable is an element I suspect you're not really prepared to contend with.
This is why being responsible for one's own actions is crucial.
I imagine countries such as Japan are even more adherent to pedestrian responsibility.
The idea of "blame" simply isn't something I concern myself with - genuine common sense on the other hand...

THEY ARENT EVEN ALOUD TO WALK TO A CROSSWALK BECAUSE OF POLICY. CHILDREN FORCED TO CROSS UNSAFE ZONES FOR PEDESTRIANS.

Many years ago, I was driving a fully loaded 3/4 ton truck down a VERY steep hill. I was geared down and only going about 25 mph. I came around the corner and just KNEW the bus was going to stop and let kids off. Sure enough, the sign came out and lights started flashing. This was WAY before anti-lock brakes and all four wheels were locked was I tried to stop and laid on the horn. I remember being so scared I would hit a kid. I was looking for where to put the truck (the ditch was starting to look very good) when the driver retracted the sign and waved me through. I stopped anyway, with about 10 feet to spare. And then waited for the kids to cross. The driver yelled through he window "Nice stop. That had both of us cringing...". I still cannot believe how many people just do not care. I paid my ticket and am more careful since then…. But I don’t see people speeding and ignoring the stop sign. At least not that often. They need to give citations, community service or something
That’s actually brilliant
“I’m not a fan of cameras and tickets, but something needs to be done about this.”
Geez, dude. Then what do you suggest?
What an idiot. He must be thinking, Did I really say that on camera?
In my opinion cameras aren’t the answer. I believe bus drivers need to get out, stop traffic and assist the children across the road like they did before these “stop arms”.
@@MasterMayhem78 bus drivers can’t get out and help especially if there are students still on the bus waiting to go to the next spot to get dropped off. And schools certainly don’t have enough funding for extra aides on the bus to do what you suggest.

There have been multiple occasions where cars even go around my bus to try and get passed it while I cross. It’s a real problem that really needs to be stopped.
It's really infuriating to see that still happening. It was a problem when I was a kid and I had a couple of close calls myself. Make the penalty for failing to stop very severe, like say losing your license for a year or something, and I bet the incident numbers go way down
We’re way too lenient in America when it comes to things like this and licenses are way too easy to obtain
@@jaimeb6873 I agree! It should be like it is in some European countries and be required to complete a professional driving school and we need to make the penalties for some infractions super extreme!

i have such bad anxiety with this, I've almost been hit several times so when i have to cross in front of the bus i just have this natural instincts to look before i actually cross even tho the bus has the stop sign out
So why don't you do what most people do, and cross *behind* the bus??
Or failing that, wait for it to move off (or even a few feet ahead) before crossing the road behind it??

It’s a literal traffic law... why are these people given licenses when they don’t even know all of their traffic laws :((( in Canada they have significantly less traffic deaths because they have do such rigorous testing on drivers before they are licensed.
I wish driving was taken more seriously here in the states. I get so sick of people being bad drivers when so many people die each year in accidents.

@@cscn_3465 no way do I agree, 3 innocents life’s were lost for someone’s irresponsibility. The original comment said something like “imagine getting 15 years in prison for not waiting”, and I believe the lady only received 3-4 years of sentence, so I was trying to say even 15 years would have been better than 3. And if she did get 3-4 years it’s basically almost 1 year per kid she killed, that’s how much the lives of these children were to whoever made the sentence. Sadly, because like you mention, the pain the parents will have, will be eternal for them, and the lady who ran them over will get a chance to start over once she’s out of prison.

Put a secondary crossing arm (like the one on the front of school busses) that opens up in the lane next to the drivers side, that way oncoming traffic literally has to stop or it'll hit a metal bar.

Yes with huge metal spikes facing the cars.
@@danielmerrick5290 I don’t think that’s necessary. Drivers will have enough injuries with a metal bar collision to teach them a lesson for good. Also, the metal bar itself is dangerous enough and all spikes will do is increase the risk of bodily harm.
People these days don't know how to drive! If you see a stop sign, you STOP!
I used to drive a school bus in a rural area and most drivers were pretty good about obeying the stop sign. But one time an arrogant adult bicyclist went whizzing past my bus on the right side as I was discharging two students to the driveway of their home. The first kid left the bus and made it safely into her driveway, but the bicyclist ripped by just as the boy was starting to exit the bus. Fortunately he wasn't hit. After that event, I always stopped the bus at an angle in such a manner that bicyclists would HAVE to run their bike into the 30 inch deep ditch at the edge of the roadway and crash into the driveway culvert to be able to get around the bus. I had no takers.
