  • I thought I would do a video about auto vs manual auto locking hubs. The ford owners manual sucks. The only way to tell 100% sure if you have auto locking hubs is to look for the vacuum lines. If you found this video helpful or would like help fund future experiments. please donate below.

    Thanks for the video. Short and sweet. Below is from owners manual.
    For proper operation, make sure that each hub is fully
    engaged and that both hub locks are set to the same position
    (both set to LOCK or both set to FREE). To engage LOCK,
    turn the hub locks completely clockwise; to disengage the hubs
    (FREE), turn the hub locks completely counterclockwise.

    Easiest way to remember it, is the same as with bolts and screws. Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.

    *NEVER LEAVE THE HUBS IN 'LOCK' PERMANENTLY WHEN ON HIGHWAY.* THIS ALLOWS FUEL SAVINGS AND LESSENS COMPONENT WEAR WHEN IN 2WD.
    *ALWAYS LEAVE IN 'AUTO' UNLESS YOUR VACUUM SYSTEM DOESN'T ENGAGE THE HUB LOCKS.*
    IF THE LATTER, THEN TURN TO 'LOCK' TO MANUALLY ENGAGE WHEN 4X4 IS NEEDED.
    *AUTO> TURN LEFT, LOCK> TURN RIGHT.*

    • @cbyrd2productions
      @cbyrd2productions Před 10 měsíci +4

      No, you do not have lock those to use 4x4. The 4WD knob in the truck will do it for you via the vacuum system. However, if it the vacuum system is not working, you can get of the truck and go lock them yourself.

      @carolinawestern3875 Před 2 měsíci

      Only if you want 4 Low. You have to manually lock the hubs. Otherwise the vacuum system will engage only 4 HI. The reason for this, is to make you come to a complete stop. Preventing you from trying to engage low at too high a speed and blowing out the transfer case.

    Auto lock does not work in sand. Works ok in snow and ice. I see it almost daily on the beach. A lot of the times, the lock is actually behind a screwed on center cap. Pain in the butt. The reason it doesn't work in sand is because it is a soft lock so you can get slippage on hard surfaces. When you manually lock it, you don't want to turn on hard surfaces at all unless the transfer case is back in 2wd.

  • @rehtracam
    @rehtracam Před 5 lety +1

    I didn't know that you could have Auto locking hubs even with the manual locking part. I have a Dodge and it has nothing like that you have a switch on the inside of the cabin that's it.

    • @trd4d
      @trd4d Před 3 lety +2

      Dodge is different. The hub locks in hard when you switch it inside. Ford's have a soft auto lock that slips in sand and other hard pulls. Can't go rock crawling without manually locking Ford's. Works good on ice and snow because it is low stress.

    Manual hubs with a floor shifter is the only TRUE reliable system....period....no vacuum lines, no wiring or solenoids to fail in the middle of a snowstorm..., just DIRECT controls. Push button is nice, but you're always thinking "shit, what if 4wd doesn't turn on".....sure if you live 15 minutes from home, No big deal, but if you got a Long drive, it's a really terrifying thought.

      Brought it to the dealer. I have 2 months left on 5 year powertrain warranty. I asked if it was a big job to change and how much the parts were. Left truck for oil change. got a call from dealer to tell me that they changed all for brakes pads, rotors, and both hubs. FREE! The brakes were covered under my maintenance plan and the hubs under the 5 year powertrain. Winner, Winner Chicken dinner boys. We are eating steak tonight!!!! YES

    • @XxBigDAWG22xX
      @XxBigDAWG22xX Před 5 lety

      if you have manual locking diffs then you just will want to leave the center wheel hub cap off so you can still lock them. just search it online for wheels on for trucks and you will see it most likely.

    • @nickstrachan4156
      @nickstrachan4156 Před 6 lety

      They lock you axels do that the tires articulate with the for wheel drive it's so that power will go through the front shatf to the wheels

    • @dakotakelly9371
      @dakotakelly9371 Před 5 lety

      They lock the cv axle/axle shaft to the hub. When not in 4wd and hubs disengaged the wheel/tire will be “free wheeling” which is essentially just the wheel and tire spinning without being connected to the drivetrain and the front axle gets no power. When in 4wd with the hubs locked the transfer case sends power to the front differential. The differential then sends power to the the cv axle/axle shaft which is then connected to the hub via the locking hub gears.

    Excuse me but why did you describe the truck as a powerstroke? Powerstroke is not a vehicle description. It’s an engine description. Besides that it doesn’t matter which engine you have whether it be gas or diesel. That has nothing to do with the 4WD.

      Because manual Hubs with a Floor shifter is the only TRUE 100% reliable system, period. Other systems rely on Vacuum or Electrical solenoids/relays, which eventually Fail and leave you stranded during a snowstorm....just read Truck forums, failures are pretty common on All truck brands.
