    Great explaination on the hubs. My 08 hubs are Lock or Auto selector, same as your 09 would've been. I had the same happen, engaged 4 wheel drive but realized I had nothing going to the front wheels when trying to go up an icy hill. Unfortunately, my front aftermarket wheels had solid center caps with no way to access the hub selectors, and I actually thought the problem was in the transfer case or in the shiftonthefly system. After I got back and some Googling, I discovered they were vacuum actuated like you pointed out, and my vacuum pump was running continuously due to a broken vacuum line (brittle spaghetti tubing crap) in front of the degas bottle. Since then I've replaced most of the tubing that was accessible, and changed out my wheel center caps.

    Good info on the hubs for the vacuum lock trucks. Most people don’t understand that system, but last year in a snow storm my 21 F350 would not lock twice. I had the manually lock them. Has worked ever since. For the transfer cases in the Fords they are either manual stick shift or electronic mechanical shifters. Same process, one the motor does it and the other you do it. In either case you have to let off the gas pedal and straighten steering wheel if possible. At that point I have no issues shifting up to 50 mph. Just use common sense. My 03 SD was the best shifting truck ever. My 01 wasn’t bad. My dads old 96 is a pain! Thanks for sharing!

Is that normal or what if anything am I doing wrong?

    I didn't realize they were auto locking also - I see the traditional hub locks on the 250s and up and I just assumed that you had to lock them manually as I always did. Great videos! Maybe you can also do a video clearly explaining wheel offsets and back spacing, let us know which offsets will fit with which lifts and tire sizes. I have a 2020 on order and I’m trying to figure out what the stock rim offset is and how much offset I should order my aftermarket rims with.
    I looking at doing a similar setup as I did on my 2011, 6” lift with 22x10 wheels 37”x13.5” tires.
    I did fender flares on my 2011 but I don’t really like that look, I want the tires to poke only like 1.25-1.5”. I may have to go 12” wide but I really like the look of 13.5” Thanks!

      @workplaytv  Před 4 lety

      Hey man for sure. The factory offset is +40 I’m going with 0 and with the 12.5” tires I’ll be out roughly 2” further than stock. Not doing flares but doing kickback mudflaps.

    My mechanic told me to NEVER plow without locking your hubs. He said plowing causes them to go in and out constantly, causes too much wear-and-tear on the auto lockers, and they will fail prematurely. When they failed, I replaced them with WARN units. They're a few bucks more (JEGS and Summit Racing have good prices), but have held up better than the OEM's. Don't get the cheap aftermarket units that have a lot of plastic in them, they don't last and having to replace them again wipes out any money you might have saved.. Easy DIY fix. Takes less than 1/2 hour (if the screws come out without breaking or stripping the hex).

    • @rodneytatman449
      @rodneytatman449 Před 4 lety

      OOMAN
      You need to find a smarter mechanic.
      When in 4wd(hi or lp) on a SOF system the hubs stay locked until you switch into 2wd. They will not lock and unlock on their own. They are ran by vacuum which is supplied constantly whenever the switch is in 4wd hi or 4wd lo.

    • @OOMAN
      @OOMAN Před 4 lety

      Rodney Tatman I confirmed it with a Ford mechanic as well. Maybe Chevy and Dodge are different. The auto-lockers only engage when traction is lost, hence the term “auto-lockers”. Locking the hubs keeps them engaged full-time. Otherwise, why would they have a twist to lock full-time system???

    • @rodneytatman449
      @rodneytatman449 Před 4 lety +3

      OOMAN
      They are a convenience item, the manual lock is a back up in case of failure in the auto system.
      The auto locking system is activated by the dash mounted switch that powers a solenoid which provides a continuous supply of vacuum through a rubber line to the front hubs which pulls on a large diaphragm to pull the splined clutch inward, locking the axle and hub together. One thing to remember, this is not an AWD system, it's an auto locking hub system, it automatically locks the hubs when the switch is turned, not automatically unlocks them all by itself.
      So, as long as the system is engaged(and working properly) the hubs are always locked in.
      Now, you may think I'm a DICK, an asshole(I am of course) even and totally wrong as well, that is your prerogative and you are entitled to it.
      One thing I've learned in all my years is that in general an auto mechanic(wiring trace and trouble shooters not withstanding) is a glorified parts changer and doesn't understand systems, how they work nor do they care as long as it doesn't affect their paycheck.

    • @matrixex500
      @matrixex500 Před 2 lety +1

      @@OOMAN they are not auto lockers lol... they lock "automatically" when you switch into 4 wheel drive...they will not switch in and out when you are in 4 wheel drive, when you are in 4wd you are in 4wd all the time until you switch into 2wd, then the automatic hubs unlock... you need a new mechanic... look online and you will find 1000s of pages of literature explaining this....your mechanic is wrong

    Hi …… my 2004 F250 has a dashboard control only arrangement in the cab. I assume with the hubs locked the front wheels are freewheeling until engaged on the dashboard….. (2WD to 4WD) Since there is no manual shift, does 4WD engagement still require a vacuum assist.?
    would this be prone to the same vacuum issues that might occur with the hubs unlocked and relying on the vacuum dependent dash only control?

    So I came across your video and I have a 2019 Ford F450 with manual locking hubs. When I purchased the truck, the person who sold it to me didn’t really know that much about it and I’ve tried to find answers on how to use it online, but I keep getting mixed responses. So from your video what I feel like you’re saying is that the four-wheel-drive will work using only the button inside the truck, but the manual locking hubs are to use IN CASE any components in the four-wheel-drive such as the vacuum line or actuator happened to stop working you can manually lock them and still use the four-wheel-drive. Is that correct? So my question is do I not need to use the manual locking until it’s necessary because my husband is the one who drives this truck. He works in roofing and has to use the truck to dump shingles at landfills quite often and he uses his four-wheel-drive very frequently and he’s always getting out of the truck to engage the manual locking hubs because that’s what we thought we had to do. but what I’m gathering from your video is that the four-wheel-drive will work by engaging it inside the truck and he should only use the manual locking hubs if he gets in a situation where the four-wheel-drive is not locking on its own- is that correct?

      Manual transfer case = manual hubs.

    • @trailspeed7037
      @trailspeed7037 Před 4 lety

      Rodney Tatman well you never know, because the transfer case may need engaged manually but once engaged it might send a signal to the hubs to lock them, there’s been more complex things on vehicles so that may be how ford does that.

      This is what Ford does, manual transfer case gets manual hubs, SOF transfer case gets auto hubs.

    If any video to maybe create content on... 🙂 I recently bought a home in Florida, and the 2 acre property is Sandy topsoil - Florida. I would like to see what your best approach is to "paving" a gravel driveway from the street, where I have no heavy equipment handy. I'm looking for a do it yourself option to save money.
    It's been one of my projects I need to do, but I'm torn between other projects as well.
    I saw the latest F250, and I switched the hub to Lock and Auto, so easy and slick to turn, today at an auto show nearby.

      @workplaytv  Před 4 lety

    I'm confused, I have a 2022 f550 and it was making a clunking noise when turning on pavement. I found that I could turn the dial on my hubs in the auto direction. So does that mean I was locked in 4wd this whole time? I've driven 20k miles like that. The weird thing is, it didn't act like it was in 4wd and hard to steer, just made a slight clunky sound. I thought when you moved the dial to manual it locks both front wheels in drive mode. That to me would make it really difficult to steer & be very noticeable. Am I wrong?

    Video request: towing off road on steeper rocky roads where you have to drive very slowly. How bad is it for trucks? I guess going slow, like 2 or 3 miles an hour means no air cooling.. Is it better to go with 4 low?

    • @workplaytv

      Going that slow you would want the immediate torque that the 4low would give you. And does a much better job from holding you from rolling backwards.
