  • Here it is! My first look and detailed review of Tiger Lake. Intel's 11th Generation processor (also known as EVO). Will it live up to the hype? Are the integrated graphics as good as claimed? Let's find out. So grab some popcorn and enjoy the show!
-- Please note, I now get a Cinebench R20 Multicore score of ~1,800 with Dell's newer BIOS

Thanks for actually putting out real numbers instead of only GeekBench scores. Seeing the i5 Macbook still right up there with other small notebooks is great. Picked one up after seeing your recommendation and review.
Couldn't wait for the new ARM Macbooks due to needing a laptop for uni, so I ended up getting a 13 inch 10th gen Macbook and I couldn't be happier. it's built way better than the HP and the Acers I briefly used and the screen is excellent.
It's good to see dell put out the 11th gen chips out so quick but I would be very wary of getting a Dell seeing their screw ups with the XPS 15 and 17.
I was considering one of these after returning a 2nd faulty Acer, but after seeing how slow Dell's support also was when I had a few queries I decided to avoid. Go on the Dell subreddit all you end up reading about are faults after faults which is not something I want to be dealing with.
I also don't get why they didn't make the 4k panel capable of 100% DCI P3, 90% doesn't make any sense if you want to do any photo or video editing on the go.
I'm not sure what the support experience is like in other countries, but in the UK Dell and Acer are both bad, and there's a high chance you'll have to reach out to them if you buy one of their devices.
Also as an extra note, Anyone thinking of getting an Acer in the UK, I would avoid like the plague. They sent me 2 faulty devices in a row, you have to wait on hold for 45 minutes + just to get some help, and they often ignore emails. The ConceptD 7 is built terribly as well. Both models I received had bad backlight bleed which is awful for a device apparently made for creators.

Don't get fooled by Intel's marketing materials where they always hugely glorify their inferior products and give mouthful of architecture name. This has same architecture as in Ice lake but can run faster due to mature 10nm fabrication, hence the better single threaded performance. They did add a bigger GPU die but as Josh suggested, while running GPU heavy tasks, the cpu gets power throttled and can't reach the full speed, resulting degraded performance, even compared to Ice Lake.

@@alexanderschulte8248 There are reviews of thee laptops already...New Swift 3, Asus Zenbook 14 and Zenbook Flip 13 and all are having exact issues described in this review. XPS is considered the highest end Windows 13 inch Ultrabook and that suffers too. If you consider properly cooled IdeaPad Slim 7 with 4800u then the multi threaded performance reaches the level of within 15% of 8 core i7-10875H. You have to check the overall performance across the board, not by picking up the laptop with best thermal solutions. If you do that for AMD too, it gives an altogether performance of a different league. IdeaPad 5 14 is a 3 lbs laptop costs less than half of XPS 13 and even the 4500u was able to outperform 1165G7 in cpu benchmarks, not really looking good.

USB4 comes in 2 different speeds: USB4 20 Gbps & USB4 40 Gbps. When Intel says Tiger Lake's Thunderbolt 4 includes USB4, does this necessarily mean that all Thunderbolt 4 ports include support for USB4 40 Gbps? Or can the manufacturer choose to only support USB4 20 Gbps? In other words, is it possible to come across a Thunderbolt 4 port that, while supporting Thunderbolt 4 devices at 40 Gbps, only supports USB4 devices at a maximum of 20 Gbps? Or is that not an option under the Thunderbolt 4 certification?

Just as I thought. “EVOlutionary is not revolutionary” with Tigerlake. At least with this new Dell XPS. Disappointing.

Unfortunately its not only Dell XPS. Notebookcheck tested recently zenbook with Tiger Lake. It was really underwhelming that after all that hype Intel created in 12 games new Iris iGPU beats Vega 8 from Yoga Slim7 only in 3 games... I'm done with intel products. Not only worse , but they are lying to us, their clients.

You're a legend Josh! I have been considering getting the Metabox Flo (Clevo reskin) for my next daily driver, but was held back by the U series 10th gen chips they used, but they've just released a version running the 1165G7 chip, and it's even got TB4.
I don't need hardcore dedicated graphics when I'm on the road, so I feel like this may be my next laptop, provided Microsoft doesn't announce a Surface Laptop 4 running Ryzen 4k chips.

SUPER intresting info! Thanks for going through this so thoroughly. If it would have been the leap forward Intel claimed I would have been a bit surprised. Hope there will be other units that do better later on in the fall so there is some competition for Ryzen, since they are so darn hard to buy in most cases...

Does anyone know how this would compare with the 11th gen for the new dell xps 13 2 in 1 as opposed to the standard clamshell these tests were on? I ask because I heard the 2 in 1 has an improved cooling system over the regular variant. Thanks :)

Thank you, very good review, much more reasoned and detailed than other reviewers' (perhaps just a bit too fast spoken, at least for me whose mother-language is not english). BTW, I suspect we'll have to get hands on other implementations from other vendors or other laptos from Dell itself to fully understand the potential of the 11th generation Intel processor with the Xe Iris graphics and fully compare it to the AMD ryzen. Perhaps, the xps 9310 is simply a not enough mature design

Can you give some advice on whether entry-level GPUs like the MX450 is a good addition to an intel 11th gen i5 or i7 G7 processor, or is it mostly redundant and consumes too much power for just a little performance boost?
