A 2004 commercial for a Ford Mustang that aired during American Dreams Season 3-- featuring a young serviceman coming home from war, whose father gives him a car.
I wrote and produced this short branded film 13 years ago. It was directed by Michael Apted, a great talent and human being. It ran only once on TV during the 2004 Season Finale of American Dreams and was named the most liked commercial of the year by Ad Age. That was about 2 years before CZcams was even around. Somehow it found it's way on here. So great to see people still enjoying it.
On my way home from my first tour in Iraq is when I purchased my 67 Mustang. Like the father in the comercial, looking forward to purchasing it kept my mind off of the bad things while I was there. It also kept my mind clear the second time I was there. Owning a Mustang has been my dream since I was 14. To me, it's like owning a piece of America, driving it, is what it feels to be American.
my son was a USMC sniper who served in Iraq. when he came home we had a old Mustang waiting for him in the driveway too...what a great commerical...God Bless all the men and women who serve our armed forces. I pray for a safe and speedy home for you all ...God Bless
I remember seeing this commercial new, I was ecstatic over the new 2005 Mustang! I got to experience that feeling of keys to a Mustang in 2007. Best day ever!!
Being a fellow Mustang owner, as well as a proud American, this video really evokes a lot of emotion in me. Not only to the US soldier, but also to the Mustang I lost recently. This video makes me shed a tear every time I watch it. Just the strange connection a human being can have with a 'piece of machinery' can spark such emotion, as well as the theme behind this beautiful commercial. God Bless our troops, the Mustang, and Ford for coming up with it and all that it stands for!
This whole commercial made me sad. His mom and brother were late to pick him up, he seemed lonely at a party in his honor, and he doesn't have a close relationship with his father. He seemed sad throughout the whole commercial. A new car was nice, but a deeper relationship with his father would have been better.
I think I 've watched that commercial now a hundred times over the years and it still has not lost any of its charm to me! It actually made me buy my 2011 GT...
NBC debuted this at the end of the "American Dreams" Christmas show, where the son had been in Vietnam. I downloaded a copy from the Ford is website. It is absolutely brilliant and incredibly poignant. 10/10
Talk about giving me a sense of pride and joy for having served. Man... Thank you Ford Motor Co., I have and will continue to enjoy my Mustang for years to come.
Two generations of Devil Dogs and their Mustangs. I bought an old Cadillac when I came home. Lord willing, I'll have a son join the Corps one day, and I'd like to buy him a Cadillac, or Mustang, or who knows what else.
This is one of the best commercials I've ever seen. I have an 06' GT and I love them and I love Ford. Great commercial for a great car company. Good job Ford.
I have something similar same car but from 2007 with the black convertible top and all black interior and black leather seats easily the best car I’ve ever owned but it feels like more than I car it’s not just a car to me I’ve always liked mustangs so every time I drive it im incredibly happy
i drive an 05 Mustang. When I wanted to get a Stang build in the 60's I saw this and it changed my mind. It was modern with the body of the old skool ones. I wouldnt choose any European car over it... no matter how fast.
If my dad ever gives me a brand new car like i will asked to trade the new card for his old mustang. That will be my american dream to own a muscle classic car!!
Whoever produced this was no thirty-something. There is NO way to set the stage for someone viewing this for the first time. You just give them the link, & step back. There are so many underlining aspects of this. Show this to any Nam Vet and be prepared for the resonse. It would have made no difference what the car was, Vette, Cuda, Camaro, the message is the same. In all the world, there is no family like a Military family. Port Huron, MI says "God bless America"
Sorry for your troubles, but each car can have its problems and all dealerships are different. You didn't have to take it to the same dealer for warranty service. Any Ford dealer will accept it. I wouldn't judge all "American" cars on that. I've owned all types, but the simplicity of the current mustangs and how solid they are have sold me. The engine bay harks back to the 60's when the normal human could work on his own car. I have a 66 too... solid.
I'm not an American or anything, but I always treat soldiers with the best respect possible., especially American soldiers. They do so much and give so much, it's only fair. On topic: Beautiful, beautiful cars. Unfortunately we don't get Mustangs over here but we do get Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores. They are Muscle car in spirit and are used for V8 Supercars. :)
@mrsnake500 Thanks for sharing! This is one of the best commercials I have ever seen. I was one of those guys in 1968 that went overseas to jungleland. I had a mustang (66) in high school but got a differen car after a tree met that ne. I always wanted another one and got one in 2008 that is the same red as the one in this commercial. Just traded it in for a 2011 red one that has the old gt package and love it.
Wow...just wow.... I may not be a Ford fan, but this was one brilliant ad. So what if it used underhanded pathos? It's still a wonderful thank-you to the troops.
This is one of the best made commercials iv seen.gets you right in the heart.something about a guy and his mustang , memories , fun , looking forward to going forvthat cruise to think , a date , doing the maintenance , performance addd ons .. a Ford Mustang is a special vehicle .. you look forward to it everyday as you save up for it , get to name her and share a part of your life with it..something about that exhaust note , that musclecar pull , something about a Mustang.

Maybe the father suffered from PTSD. So many Vietnam vets suffered from it & never got treatment from the military at the time.

A fine message of recognition and even sold their fish.
Was thinking Chevy should make a commercial like this but with an astronaut to advertise the new C8.
great commercial love watching it
This looks like it could be a movie premier or something along those lines.
wow that was a really well done commercial!!! makes me want to go out and buy one
the recruitment add in 1967: "Three things worth fighting for; The beach boys, apple pie, and the 67 mustang"
If that commercial doesn't scream Americana, I don't know what dose. Great tribute to our Troops.
Hell yeah, and Thank You for serving.
Awesome vid, wish there were more commercials like this honoring our troops.
Thats the best commercial I ever saw...
wow
