- Ford introduced a redesigned 2005 model year Mustang at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, codenamed "S-197," that was based on the new D2C platform. Developed under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang, a veteran engineer for Ford's IndyCar program under Mario Andretti, and exterior styling designer Sid Ramnarace,[51] the fifth-generation Mustang's styling echoes the fastback Mustang models of the late-1960s. Ford's senior vice president of design, J Mays, called it "retro-futurism." The fifth-generation Mustang was manufactured at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
For the 2005 to 2010 production years, the base model was powered by a 210 hp (157 kW; 213 PS) cast-iron block 4.0 L SOHC V6, while the GT used an aluminum block 4.6 L SOHC 3-valve Modular V8 with variable camshaft timing (VCT) that produced 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS). Base models had a Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission with Ford's 5R55S 5-speed automatic being optional. Automatic GTs also featured this, but manual GTs had the Tremec TR-3650 5-speed.[52]
The 2010 model year Mustang was released in the spring of 2009 with a redesigned exterior - which included sequential LED taillights - and a reduced drag coefficient of 4% on base models and 7% on GT models.[53] The engine for base Mustangs remained unchanged, while GTs 4.6 L V8 was revised resulting in 315 hp (235 kW; 319 PS) at 6000 rpm and 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) of torque at 4255 rpm.[54] Other mechanical features included new spring rates and dampers, traction and stability control system standard on all models, and new wheel sizes.
Engines were revised for 2011, and transmission options included the Getrag-Ford MT82 6-speed manual or the 6R80 6-speed automatic based on the ZF 6HP26 transmission licensed for production by Ford. Electric power steering replaced the conventional hydraulic version. A new 3.72 L (227 cu. in.) aluminum block V6 engine weighed 40 lb (18 kg) less than the previous version. With 24 valves and Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (TiVCT), it produced 305 hp (227 kW; 309 PS) and 280 lb·ft (380 N·m) of torque. The 3.7 L engine came with a new dual exhaust; gasoline mileage increased to 19 city/31 highway mpg.[1]. GT models included a 32-valve 5.0 L engine (4951cc or 302.13 cu. in.) (also referred to as the "Coyote".) producing 412 hp and 390 ft-lbs of torque. Brembo brakes are optional along with 19-inch wheels and performance tires.[55]
The Shelby GT500's 5.4 L supercharged V8 block was made of aluminum making it 102 lb (46 kg) lighter than the iron units in previous years. It was rated at 550 hp (410 kW; 558 PS) and 510 lb·ft (690 N·m) of torque.[56]
For 2012, a new Mustang Boss 302 version was introduced. The engine had 444 hp (331 kW; 450 PS) and 380 lb·ft (520 N·m) of torque. A "Laguna Seca" edition was also available, which offered additional body bracing, the replacement of the rear seat with a steel 'X-brace' for stiffening, and other powertrain and handling enhancements.
In the second quarter of 2012, Ford launched an update to the Mustang line as an early 2013 model. The Shelby GT500 has a new 5.8 L supercharged V8 producing 662 hp (494 kW; 671 PS). Shelby and Boss engines came with a six-speed manual transmission. The GT and V6 models revised styling incorporated the grille and air intakes from the 2010-2012 GT500. The decklid received a black cosmetic panel on all trim levels. The GT's 5.0 liter V8 gained eight horsepower from 412 hp (307 kW; 418 PS) to 420 hp (313 kW; 426 PS).

This Mustang was the car that started it all. Before the new Camaro or Challenger, there was this car. The success of the current Mustang and other "retro-style" cars later created in this category are all thanks to this car. My 2006 GT was and still is the best bang for the buck car. It still turns heads and gets as much attention as any current Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger. out there.
You forgot the GTO then
The GTO lacked the soon to be popular retro styling. A craze that the Mustang started. It didn't sell nearly as well as the Mustang and died with the Pontiac brand.
It had coke bottle styling though, before the others. It may not have sold as well but remember it was a trim option at first and the Tempest was selling well compared to it due to lower insurance. Plus the fact that A-body cars including GTO of the 60s-early 70s were legendary.
Ford has some great Mustangs but my point was it wasn't first.
I'm not talking about sales lol it started the trend but it's fine to be biased. It did start the era of stuffing the biggest engine in the lightest car because DeLorean didn't get the go-ahead from GM on the Banshee
I wasn't talking about the GTO's from the 60's. I was talking about the mid-2000's. This 2005 Mustang reignited the popularity in this category of cars for the last 13 years. Sadly, the GTO during the mid to late 2000's did not spark the same popularity or steer the direction of this car category like this Mustang did.

I'm proud to say that thanks to my mom purchasing my 2006 mustang GT for me in January 2021, it's been 10 months, and I love driving my mustang, it gets me where I need to go, has plenty of power, and is a blast to drive.
yooo! congrats! my first car is an 06 mustang too! it’s been in my family for about 12 years and it was my brothers and it’s mine now. truly is so much fun to drive and absolutely beautiful from
the outside too. tho little tip if you still have the shake 500 or 1000 in your vehicle, start deciding what features you like the most in it and start looking at aftermarket radio units to put in there when the shaker eventually craps out. i just replaced mine in december haha so that’s how i know

I live in the UK and am the proud owner of a 2007 GT Convertible , Torch Red with the Premium interior package, They never sold the 5th Gen in the UK. I love it! Looks much more like a mustang than the current 6th Gen.
As a kid, I got this as my first toy car. When I graduate college, this will be my first car that I buy with my own money.

In my opinion they should’ve stayed with this body style just with new technology in the car. No antenna just embedded throughout the rear window. Thank God I have still have my 2005 GT Mustang with Torch Red exterior and yes “Its Manual” 🔥👍

i have a 2008 gt. i have had it for 5 years. they are not the fastest car out there but they do have plenty of power for the average driver. i plan to keep mine in the family for generations.
I’ve had 3 of the 2005-2009 mustangs and they are wonderful cars.easy to work on and parts are cheap.

They should not have departed from this body style as much as they did. They should have made more subtle changes like Dodge did with the Challenger. The 05-09 look with Coyote performance and IRS would be pretty sweet. I have an 06 GT purchased new and it is meticulously kept with 95,000 miles now. I love that car. People trash talk the 4.6L 3V but the truth is it’s a workhorse of an engine and it sounds great, it sounds better than the Coyote engine. If it was not a great engine it would not have been on Wards 10 Best Engines multiple years. I have some bolt ons and a good tune and my car runs strong. Such mods really awaken it over stock. It’s no slouch and it feels great to drive. I hope to have it a long time and to keep it looking awesome and running great.

The '05 Mustang started the Modern Day Muscle Car wars. Thanks to this great car Camaro made a comeback as did Challenger and Charger. And we have one. We have an '05 GT Fastback, original bone stock. And its Henry's favourite colour Black.

I remember first time I saw a 2005 GT Model. It was in a mall in Atlanta. What a car! I knew I will own it. 19 years later, I take care of my baby, a Grey Sterling 2012 Mustang Club of America Convertible owned since 2014. Based in Burgundy (France), Mustang cars are very popular in France.

Need for Speed Most Wanted 2005 is what really got me into this car. After that, I bought a mini Hot Wheels version of the car I had in the game (plain 05 silver GT) Then 10 years later I bought one for my first car. Been my dream car since I was a kid! Had ~11,000 miles on it when I bought it. 05 GT Premium, window sticker, records, everything. Absolutely love it.

Mustang IIs suck while others are great.
Not all the 70's body styles looked bad, 1970-1973 were fine. But 74-2004 were just horrendous to me... Now the 80's fox body's made great race cars though

I personally just bought a 2006 Mustang and I love it. It doesn't have a V-8 but I didn't want a V-8 so i bought one with a V-6. Its the same color as the one there and I love it.
I owned a 2005 in Cloudveil/Vista Blue (Canadian colour code), sold it when I got married. Great car. 5th Gen was a brilliant series to combine old + new.

It's the same thing I've been thinking! With all these new vinyl wrap colors, 05-09 Mustang owners have been taking these models to different levels, these 05-09 still to this day turns as much heads on the street as any new model of today would.. Ford did an amazing job with the 2005-2014 S197 model.

Bought my 05 Mustang GT Convertible Premium in 08. Has been my daily driver since then… Solid. I see it as the last of the old age stangs with not a ton of tech and easy to work on.
I have a 07 convertible only has 33k on it stored during winter love the style and its very fun to drive my top goes down in the spring doesn't go back up until fall never has seen rain its my toy

It’s 2022 that tells you something! I will keep my 2007 Premium tungsten silver …with black leather interior, in my family forever! The markets high, everybody’s wanting them now!

Foxbodies will always be my favorite, but I can't deny my love of early S-197s. I turned 5 in August of '04, so I was a little kid when these hit the showroom. I'd love to own one some day

I'm owner of 2005 V6 for more than 11 years... the only thing I regret (just a little bit) about this car is that I don't own V8... and that nonstop "clicking", when I'm filling the gas tank. :)

It is common problem on 2005 - 2007 mustang. You will find many results, if you will google it. There are some instructions how to fix this problem... it didn't work for me.
They basically kept that design for 10 years.. I have a 2014 which mostly resembles that 😎👍
