  • 2017 Yamaha R6 Review - Having ridden the previous R6 I was very pleased when Sam from my local Yamaha Dealer told me that he had a brand new R6 available for me to ride. Essentially the same bike as the old one in the engine department, but with a whole host of new electronics and gorgeous R1esque styling added, my first ride had a lot of promise....
    A thousand thanks to Sam and the guys at Powerbiking, the Yamaha dealer for High Wycombe and the surrounding areas, for making this review possible.

    I have one, it's a lot of fun. I couldn't open up my CBR 1000rr up very often outside of the interstate whereas on the R6 I can bang through a few gears. Makes absolutely no power under 8k RPMS and all the fun happens between 12-16k. It's also surprisingly more comfortable than the CBR was. It's easily the second best sounding bike I have heard in person behind a Speed Triple which i also own.

    Yamaha can really style a bike. I've always been a gsxr fan but Suzuki needs to take a lesson from Yamaha for their future bikes, styling wise.

    I love your videos, been watching them for years now, very informative and straight to the point. Just a quick question though, What do you reackon is better the 2017 r6 or the 2015 899 panigale? , just deciding on what to get next, been on an xj6 for a year and then a mt07 traser for 3 years

    Great review. I’m looking at getting this same model. Did you check to see if you were in A mode during the ride? Maybe that’s why you weren’t getting the power you thought it should have. I know the STD and B modes dial it down a bit.

      Thanks, I'm always very wary of cars doing that, ever since a fella was killed on the "Acle Straight" in Norfolk in exactly that scenario - tragic accident which the mother very bravely had publicised via social media, maybe her actions saved my bacon....got to be always considering the worst when you're on these potentially dangerous bits of kit. But what a great bit of kit!

    Nice review, have been looking at the R6 when I get back on the road. You must let me know where you ride; I love the sound of these "unrestricted" areas ;o) Low power low in the revs sounds ideal, especially in SE with lots of slow roads/traffic for the most part. My old (2002) R1 used to protest in traffic and get very lumpy, urging one to open her up.

      So many people are so quick to bag 600s but they'd probably be better off on a 600 over a 1000. 1000s are way too much for the street and so damn intimidating on the track if you're really having a go.

    As always, quality review. Your input please...seriously considering this bike after I get some of the rust off (back riding after career, family, etc) by doing track schools and putting a few thousands miles on my R3. Would you consider an R6 (slightly less retail) over the Ducati V2 or is the Ducati worth the extra coin? Any thoughts on this dilemma (which I am grateful to be able to have) would be appreciated. Best!!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 4 lety +1

  • @Metallica2131
    @Metallica2131 Před 7 lety +20

    Great review TMF! I think the lack of low down power can be partly attributed to the Euro 4 strangulation - don't get me wrong the R6 has historically been a top endy bike that loves to rev, but 44Teeth did a back to back comparison of a stock bike and one with a full exhaust, de-cat and the rest of it, they reported the latter much better down low. Something to consider I suppose if you were considering purchasing - an extra £2k for those bits!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 7 lety +6

      ....isn't it a pain when you have to spend significant cash on a bike when you've just bought it - I've yet to buy a bike where I haven't though!

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider Před 7 lety +4

      Give it a bit more torque by changing the sprockets too, for most of us losing 20-25mph off the top end will not matter at all, but the extra poke throughout the rev range would be very nice. I'm guessing by "and the rest of it" you mean an ECU remap witch would help too with a nice bit of extra power and tourque.

    • @Metallica2131
      @Metallica2131 Před 7 lety +1

      Halfdead Rider Indeed, another tooth or 2 on the rear sprocket never goes a miss, a lot of bikes are geared a little long stock. (That will present the need for a speedo healer however). And yep the tuned bike had either been remapped or power commander installed (don't recall) and a performance air filter I believe. As TMF said it would be a pain spending a chunk of cash 'finishing the bike off'!

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider Před 7 lety +2

      If you have the cash it's a must I think, everyone who can should get an air filter, exhaust and tune, even on your car, petrol or diesel. Diesels respond really well and a tune can give better mpg with more power and touque.
      As for the speedo healer, it would depend on how far out it goes whether I went for one or not, it's easy to test, I done it on my 125 (can't get healers for as far as I know). I put my phone on a mount and used a gps speedo, the changes are probably quite a difference to a bigger super sports bike.
      My speedo is only out like 1mph low speed and 2-3mph at top speed and I went quite extreme, from 43T rear to 50T rear and to bring it back just a little I went from a 13T front to a 14T. I could only get a 50T rear in black and I wanted that to go with the gold DID chain :)

    @jotunheim5302 Před 7 lety

    What power and traction levels did you use? Alot of the reviews I've seen show that in 'A mode' and the least traction control level, the bike even takes off at 6000 rpm.

  • @steadytube

  • @masonicmachine
    @masonicmachine Před 7 lety

    What does unrestricted mean when you pass that sign at 2:18? I thought that the UK didn't have unrestricted speed sections?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 7 lety

      +RealPerson Well its not technically unrestricted- the sign with the black chevron just means "national speed limit applies" which on a road like that is 60mph - effectively it marks the end of a speed limited zone....

I really love the triumph Daytona 675r, but now seeing your review of this, i am certainly going to look at the R6.... in your professional opinion, which would you choose and why? do you think the triple engine is much more fun than the inline 4? i would be interested in your opinion.

      I'm still holding out hope that the 2018 Daytona gets the 765 treatment. Honestly if Euro4 is the only concern then a straight push from the RS to the Daytona would be fine (imo). I really don't want to see the Daytona go away. I guess when it comes time to replace my 955i I want it to be with another Daytona rather than a Japanese bike.

    Euro 4 hasn't been kind this the bike tho, but thankfully we can decat and apparently it does wonders.
    Personally the rear break feels spongy too me,front is good but a set of brembo's wouldn't go amiss. The rear shock is pretty crap, not sure why they spent the time on the front end and left the arse all saggy.

    My friend who has raced as a young man and now has two quite old, but beautifully customised low mileage R1s always tells me not to buy a 600 if I want to accelerate confidently from lower rev's and overtake with ease. He never says 600s are slow, he just says he doesn't want to have to work so hard to be safe and fast. Seems you're suggesting something similar. As an old cruiser 'fart' I don't really worry too much about it. The XV950R does all I need.........

      @lorenzorubino2195 Před 7 lety +2

      HFR83 I think it depends on how you rev up the bike, if you use lower gears than you'll have more power (more torque), because you're on higher revs. So when it's time to overtake the bike is ready... (sorry for my not perfect English but I'm Italian)

    • @AllSortsOfStuff58
      @AllSortsOfStuff58 Před 7 lety +3

      No problem Lorenzo. I understand you perfectly. I think it's just a matter of preference. My friend has ridden litre bikes for years and you get used to a riding style. I have found the same thing with cars in the past. They're all enjoyable in their way, but if we all liked the same thing the world would probably be a boring place. There's room for all of us.............I'd probably kill myself on a sports bike these days....lol.....

    So it's better than the previous R6? This new R6 engine in terms of it's much higher power band is a bit like the new Street Triple RS which also comes alive above 9k also with an addictive howl albeit a triple howl? It's a great pity that Triumph are discontinuing the Daytona 675R as if they did bring it uptodate it would really give the R6 a run for it's money. Not really sure what the best bike in this class is - new R6, previous gen R6, Daytona 675R, CBR600 Fireblade? What are your thoughts MF?

    I have noticed a few sport bike guys down grading to new 600cc bikes because 1000cc bikes are getting a bit silly. As a 600cc owner myself there is nothing like being able to give your bike a bit of welly even in the city, something you cant really do with a litre bike these days.

    I adored my R6 (first of the new shape 2006 and for my money, better looking than this one). As you say, most comfortable sportsbike I've ever owned, absolutely bonkers past 10krpm (you were changing at 12k, if you love the sound wait til you hear it at 16k), no power whatsoever below 7k (I had many a moment like you did where you pull out from behind a car and nothing happens....then it eventually explodes into life). Sold it for a new shape 675R. Amazing bike, but not as comfy and dare I say it, not quite as exciting with the more linear power delivery, even though it's a much faster bike. Looks like the R6 has been strangled more so with Euro 4. Nothing a full system won't sort though.
    It says a lot about the R6 that I still think about it while owning a 675R...
