His analogy has been explained several times now, but some rude observers would rather keep heaping on abusive language from a place of willful ignorance instead of striving to fairly comprehend what another person was arguing logically. The knee-jerk presumption that an intelligent person was making a stupidly shallow argument is hardly a sign of studious clarity -- it comes off as feigning to be a little simple in order to gang up on a perceived weaker target socially (no matter how ridiculous the context, like random people relying on emotional attacks against an identifiable public persona of some intellectual fame). If you have an objection to what he said, articulate it charitably and logically, then present your counterargument to refute it. The internet isn't for bullying, simplistic, 'majority posts rule' discourse. All I see in this comment section is, "I don't get it! Eric Weinstein must be stupid!" The cluelessness it takes to present yourselves that way is not at all to your credit.

He thinks that because he's a physicist that makes him de facto "smart." But there is no one "smart." Just because Weinstein knows theoretical physics doesn't mean his metaphors about politics have any particular value. But again, he thinks it does. Probably because that's been reinforced by the culture around him his whole life. We in america like to believe in the myth of a single underlying intelligence which you either got or you don't because it helps us to conflate class mobility (however minimal) with true meritocracy. The successful are successful "because they're smart."

“There’s a huge amount of talent in the world not sitting in the right seats” I LOVE that quote because POLITICS is the NUMBER ONE obstruction to that quote on BECOMING reality !!! Namely POLITICS is 99 % EMOTION and 1% POLICY !!! THAT is why for the MOST of society you CANNOT get that TALENTED in those "right seats" Ask ANYBODY WHEREVER they work at doesn't matter to name a situation in which office/work politics gets in the way of the RIGHT people filling in the RIGHT positions of that said workplace. You can get stories for centuries !!! WHY ??? Because people are sadly (mostly) driven by EMOTION rather then being analytical about the " talent in the world not sitting in the right seats" . They are driven by what is best for THEM and NOT the collective body !!! In the corporate world you see this ALL THE TIME !!! With certain last NAMES being on the top of EVERY corporate food chain Are they the ABSOLUTE best in what that do ??? In MOST cases NO WAY !!! Does the corporate world REALLY care ? NO !!! That is because they do NOT care about actual talent they care about MAINTAINING the status quo ! Which is an "emotional" function .

May I add that morals, or better, a lack thereof, also play a role in politics and chain of command for the most part? I mean, the only species to overcomplicate shit is the human species. I would primarily object to "Too many laws, regulations, and bc of this too few freedoms." I think the freedoms of most people are limited primarily by economic and geographic realities. You say "Let a free market really be free, and everyone wins." and "eliminate the elite class first," but I would argue that those who run the markets are in fact the elite class in that capitalism tends to centralize power into a small few who dictate the means of production. If you mean in more in the anarchistic libertarian/socialist sense (and not ancap?), then I think such an argument could be made. Personally, I think the revolution would have to be everywhere, all at once, and with great strength and even then, figuring out how to prevent cooption from fascist, totalitarian, and authoritarian regimes like has happened with most anarchist/communist uprisings in the past might be impossible except on very small scales.
Going back to the laws bit, as they pertain to markets, I just think the situation is much more complicated than all that. American history has shown, multiple times, how the unchecked concentration of power can create a snowball effect where one party can become too powerful which then allows them to acquire more power exponentially. They become too able to take ownership of resources and dictate how they are distributed throughout society. The oil barons, railroads, and modern tech giants are all examples. Regulations are the only way for the general society to express any level of control over the use and distribution of these resources. Under the current legal system and overly verbose legalese, they can be overly restrictive, unintentionally restrictive, or often even under-restrictive. There are many behaviors that perhaps should be more regulated, particularly in relation to pollution and carbon emissions, and perhaps areas where too much exists. But it's not a matter of too many or few laws, but what laws and how well they work.
Even in an anarcho-libertarian or ancap society, I fail to see how such things could be adequately prevented without some government, for all its evils, with the authority to exercise some form of coercive control over such entities. The challenge is not to get rid of the elites, it's to make the elites work for the people rather than making the people work for the elites. (Okay, my conclusion is also reductionist and need of improvement, but I'll leave it for now.)

This is about social mood. The last time I remember it like this was around the uncertainty of the '70s when the boomers were young. The issues were different but the mood was the same. Wars don't randomly happen. They happen out of ignorance and generally a scapegoat. When times get tough and you have a major change in ideology people do not know how to internalize it. They want some sort of predictability and cannot find it. For a very long time, the US has had a monopoly on things. They have got very used to having the best of the best. The only problem with that is it disregards the feelings of the rest of the world. It blinds one to the lifestyles that most of the world is forced to live by. You begin to take it for granted. Then challenges occur. The predictable becomes unpredictable and what was once thought of as "entitlement" is no longer something that people can rely on. This started many years ago and is the culmination of allowing the worst of the worst to rise to the top. It is not an accident but rather brought on by complacency. Change is inevitable but it is how we deal with it that determines the sort of outcome that occurs. I don't think a civil war is due but perhaps a global one where the country's right to supremacy is. Time will tell.

Are we headed toward a civil war?
We've been experiencing one never before experienced for the last four years and that's why it's hard for people to see that we're already there. Now the next four years-especially depending on the outcome of the election-will determine just how bad this *new civil war* is.

Idk what's up with Lex lately. It seems like he's been 'playing dumb' by the way he's speaking with the guests. Not giving credit to Eric but when he says to Lex, "What's on your mind, Lex. What's really going on?" I feel as if Eric also picks up on this behavior. It's actually a disservice to not only to his guests but his listeners who are actually intelligent enough to comprehend the different topics of the podcast.

This particular conversation i do think this was more for Lex than it was for us. He asked to be guided along his thought process. I think they know each other better than we know either of them and i feel like this clip was exactly that a personal conversation with a ton of metaphors. It seemed to help Lex i think. Lex is terrified that our way of life will turn into a war zone in the cities, in the suburbs, everywhere. It's something i think about all the time. I have lost friends over these issues that popped up over the summer. The division is so deep that i have no idea what else there is to say, no one will budge. Both sides consider the other as being not even worth wasting their breathe on. The people who troll are themselves probably being trolled. I want alien overlords right about now!

I'm embarrassed to admit that it took a recent online interaction to realize I was too loose with some of my remarks to those I hadn't established a rapport. It's an interesting situation having grown up with internet communications and learning to wrap a harmless teasing statement with an 'lol' to hint at intent vs those who see it much differently. But I can understand the boundary betrayal on the flip side when not familiar. Lesson learned, but I also think this is an area ripe for innovation.

In my very humble opinion....No “civil war” as long as police are allowed to do their jobs... When police are told to stand down, and to let criminal trash steal/vandalize/destroy whatever they want, that’s when others will be forced to organize and protect their communities..

    • @anarchy4l654
      @anarchy4l654 Před 3 lety

Thats a very simplistic way of looking at things. Cops can be the ones urging the "stand down" so they can become the artificial hero who restores peace and all must bend the knee afterwards. Uprising has occurred because of unjust social policing *breana taylor*. Imo id rather live in a society that smacks its own government in the mouth when it gets out of line than a society falls in line,

    • @Jay-cp9kd

@@anarchy4l654 Oh....Well, George Floyd is one thing.. but if you still believe Breonna Taylor was just an innocent EMT minding her own business sleeping...that career criminal Jacob Blake didn’t have an active warrant out/stolen car/violently fought with cops and tried to grab a weapon, or that stealing an officers stun gun and aiming it at him shouldn’t get you shot bla bla bla... Then we have nothing to talk about. Sorry, but I haven’t seen the alleged “epidemic of police brutality against innocent unarmed black men”. But I have seen an epidemic of people constantly resisting arrest...

A lot of people are saying that Eric talks in circles and doesn't answer questions, but to me he answered very clearly and succinctly. Lex asked him, "How do we let love win out in the end?" and Eric very clearly says, "You're gonna have to fight for it. You're going to have to become a fighter." Before that he disagreed with the statement that history repeats itself and alluded to Mark Twain's take on history. Why are people confused about this?

I really didn't like the way he delivered that sentiment. I could appreciate it if it were a matter of talent not being appreciated and lack of opportunity causing those seats to be vacant, or filled by less talented folk, but to suggest a talent should dictate your life's direction regardless of your passion for that talent, is very a arrogant statement.
None of us know the "right" way to live life, no matter how smart we are, so to suggest talent is the deciding factor in one's life-direction is no more valid than using any other metric.
