Lex man, I hate to agree with Eric at 2:03:22, but he's not the only person to have really spoken about this. Jordan Peterson covers it as well in one of his biblical lectures. It goes something like this, "There are two permanent existential threats to humanity. Nature is the obvious one, and the second goes to organizations that grow too large, too unyielding, and too willfully blind to be incapable of being incorruptibly managed." -- Personally, I believe that there is a third existential threat now, with the harnessing of the Atom. However, if an extinction level event happened, and wiped out MOST of humanity, then that threat could potentially disappear, so it's not technically 'permanent'. This is EXACTLY why Joe Rogan's podcast is having episodes taken down, it's why Jack Dorsey is having things happen in his company that he doesn't even agree with.

Like Lex, I used to believe that every person has a core of goodness. I spent years trying to find that core in someone, with love, understanding, kindness, acceptance. All I got in return was lies, abuse, neglect and finally the most stressful separation and divorce imaginable. Finally I woke up and learned about narcissism, and other 'personality disorders'. Whether some people are born without the capacity to love, feel empathy or have a conscience, or if early childhood experiences cause this abnormal brain development to occur, I don't know. But the reality is, a minority of people have no core of goodness, many are good a faking it though.

Richard wasn't around when I was learning about personality disorders, most of my early understanding came from the work of Prof. Sam Vaknin. I was born into a narcissistic family, then went on to have a string of abusive relationships. Getting free from my programmed pattern of choosing this for myself has been the only way I've been able to find genuine peace and happiness in my life. Getting free was a rough road though. The key was learning, and then putting into practice what I had learned.

Alone seems to be one of the defining factors which lead each into a pit of Hopelessness and Angst, deep enough to lose their way. That is the first time I have ever heard so succinctly articulated something that has nagged me for decades . I too remember and hope I never forget. I remember when I expected the world to get better. It flavours your world view in a way it is difficult to explain to anyone who has not lived that experience.
It didn't mean that I didn't think there was bad stuff going down. Of course there was. But that expectation would always return to looking for the positive rather than the negative. All I can do now is try and help my children and grandshildren deal with this Brave New World rolling out before our eyes, and hope that we do dodge the bullet racing towards us from the gun we have fired...

Quite and his struggle with the 'evil ones' is therefor interesting. At 1:03 Lex is addressing the thought of 'cruel human beings' going against the interest of the US, after this election. Probably correct. But they have always been there, we just outsourced their cruelty onto the non-west second and third world trying to maintain economic 'growth' by augmenting the western sphere of influence. In part the west could lead a luxurious live because of these 'evil people' and we should not be so naive and hypocrite towards it. The post 2001 effort to 'change' the islamic world into a western controlled democratic world, more for less failed, so no more growth. Next, the logic reaction of the 'cruel beings' is to destroy the west itself, so that afterwards they can re-start on a new growth trajectory. There is cynical logic in that. We can only hope the goal of the evil ones is not post-reset Marxism, but it appears it is their path...thats not in their self- interest, so the evil ones need to re-evaluate their post-resest thoughts, stop the current madness and find another way to build an economy which does require 1) honesty about all unfunded liabilities (pensions) and 2) abolish the need for relentless growth by tweaking future economic setup (no more government bonds, only expansion of a flexible quantity of money) and 3) accept and allow China a seat at the table as the biggest economic power. The evil ones can still profit of such a system. I would much prefer to simply be honest and take care of the old and the sick on a local level ourselves for a while. Interesting to see if they choose the path of honesty or self-destruction (blaming it on Covid). Currently we are on the self-destruct COVID hype path....

We talked and talk about the moments of life and being a musician. I didn’t get a picture because they told us not to ask. I should’ve. I'm a hardcore hip-hop fan, & to add to Eric's examples of Cash, Simeone; Eminem does the same in his song 'Lord Above'. He ends the line by saying "It's just on a side-note, me & Mariah didn't end on a high note." He actually ends it on a low note & never mentions the Mariah saga again, meaning he just left it on as a side note.
PS: thanks for this mind-stimulating convo, lex. Eternally grateful!

Lex called him out, and he laughed, in a manner which suggested that he'd been caught. It was a very genuine moment. I liked it, just because Lex got Eric to laugh. That doesn't happen often.

Lex (nor all the youth) wasn’t around long enough as an adult to know we are editing ourselves. They don’t have those experiences that we elders do. It would never have entered our minds just a few years ago. We definitely like our previous selves - all that was stolen from us.
And yes, Eric, not knowing what people are capable of doing (for something they want) is very dangerous. Healthy, logical cynicism is just smart.

My thoughts, as a 54 year old *man*,,,,
I grew up with Van Halen. Eric and David Lee Roth in the same room, lol, well David would get some mental abuse he wouldn't understand, and Eric would have a headache for a week dealing with David's wandering in his brain as he tells stories of grandeur.
Diver Down was one album that I checked on my Colombia music House club enrollment. Spanish fly is definitely an excellent song. There's even some clarinet work from Eddie and Alex's father in that album. Good call Eric.
And it's almost like you guys are kind of forming a brat pack that's going to do wonders for our society. You guys keep moving about and talking amongst each other because we totally enjoy it.
Thanks for displaying truths, or views of our realities with the earnest desire to find truth and help the world.

Fascinating chat! I gave a thumbs up as I did for all the dozens on episodes I've had the pleasure to listen to. I noticed this one got a lot of thumbs down, and initially thought that to be a bit strange. Then as I started listening, I understood why that may be. People aren't used to this kind of brutal honesty and I'm guessing they thought it may be a bit phony and arrogant of Eric...I too had a bit of mixed feelings on this roller coaster ride at first, but as it broke down and exposed to me, my own biases and preconceptions and my tendencies for political correctness at times, I realized how much value this conversation had for me. Thanks again, your podcasts are pure gold my friend!
