This was such a fascinating and thought provoking interview with several gems, but the thing that really stood out was the last statement Eric made about compassion for everyone. Most people would agree that people who think the "system" is entirely to blame and those that think the "individual" is always to blame are both wrong, but few put it as compassionately as Eric did here. Right or wrong, people are only able to operate at the level that their current programming will allow. Help them upgrade, don't condemn or discard them.

43:10 the terrible choice: loyalty to the consensus and microscopic heresies in academia vs the risk of losing your way but being allowed a larger heresy and making use of your freedom while contending with lunatics and madmen outside of academia, still maintaining a level of discipline for yourself.

He is almost fanboying/starstruck at the brilliance and intricacy of Eric's vocabulary and mind. You can also see it when he was on the JRE podcast, saying things like "jaime look that up. haha got that off the bucket list" or " it's entirely possible" knowing it's something joe says alot throughout the existence of the podcast. @nymersic, that humility is part of a strategy to convince you of his ideas because he does speak in settings where truly cold factual discussion is less important than convincing an audience. I have looked for his ideas fleshed out anywhere and am finding it difficult, it's good questions and promotion of proto commie bullshit. I came here looking for it and I'm finding good humor but no help, just references to why he should be believed like his high patrician taste for commie music.
Edit: His demeanor and speech are relatable, I'm enjoying it but I don't hear much economic detail besides armchair summing up of long term trends. This is an interesting part of an interview from him and his relation to the country. czcams.com/video/ofDXJsKsA30/video.html

Perhaps surprisingly, on a personal level a lot to relate to, especially towards the end. He brings up many pointed and logical criticisms of the current economic, political, and academic systems we have in place. Global capitalism is indeed courting revolution as they push blindly ahead with automation, surveillance, debased political discourse and the growing authoritarianism of our institutions.

That analogy about the transference of kinetic energy to potential energy in terms of fighting and tensions, was a great one. I think that's also in alignment with statistics and some general arguments by Nassim Nicholas Taleb and that systemic removals of mild perturbances lead to higher level destructive forces in the long run. That wouldn't bode well for us, if true.

Now I know what people 30 years my senior where saying when I was 25 or so. 'I don't even recognize my country anymore.' I just had a discussion today about interviewing for IT contract work. The recruiter was from India. He mentioned the client was questioning how someone could have all these items on a resume. A business analyst, database developer, back end app developer, front end app developer, unit tester, QA tester and acceptance tester. I explained that once upon a time people my age got out of college joined a company and were given several business areas to respond to any request or issue that came up with any of the systems that supported their functional processes. I told him we did in one job what 5 or 6 people do now. I told him that being asked to work one of the 5 jobs would only allow us to use 20% of what we can do. I said that makes us feel diminished in scope and purpose. He said he understood. I can't blame the current generation for playing out their roles in this scenario. I think Eric is onto something about the dangers of allowing value systems to deteriorate in the name of capitalist exploitation. Its more than just 'where has the middle class gone?'.

I get the sense that I only get about 70% of what Eric is talking about. (well, 30%) That's one of the things I find "maddening" about Eric Weinstein... he comes across as brilliant, and yet he struggles (in my opinion -- and as we all do I guess) to articulate in a digestible form the point he's actually trying to make. I'm tempted to think he does it intentionally (or that he has learned to be a bit opaque) because it makes him seem deeper and smarter. Dunno.

    Great conversion/discussion!
32:49 A fascinating exchange about nuclear war and Pinker's optimism. I LOVE how Eric doesn't let frivolities, trivialities, nor humorous interjections, cause the focal point to be lost. He knows how to, politely, keep things on track. It is, IMO, one of the nearly lost arts in so many of these conversations! It should be studied...we might get somewhere, instead of interesting intellectual pursuits getting diluted into light-weight, almost banter...
Anyway... 39:13 Lex: Speaking of Einstein...the beauty of geometry..." Eric: "I tremble before it..." Lex: "...if you're religious, that's one of the..." Eric: "I don't have to be religious, it's just so beautiful, you will tremble anyway.."
43:10 "What is the difference between inside academia and outside academia?" Great question; fascinating answer.
"... inside academics you are constantly forced to show great loyalty to the consensus and you distinguish yourself with small. almost microscopic heresies to make your reputation, in general.. ... when you go outside you meet lunatics and crazy people ...and the key question is: ..."
45:30 the baby boom generation ... string theory (Eric: why I went from physics to mathematics...)
46:53 "I thin k it is largely an affirmative action program ..." "...to have inflicted this level of loyalty..."
I CAN'T GO ON... now I want to copy ever sentence Eric says. I've got to listen to the rest of this and get on with my day! God bless us, every one. (Even though Eric is an atheist...)
Okay, one more. 50:12 "This has been the greatest collapse, this intellectual collapse, ever witnessed within academics." "These people created our economy."
1:08:05 "Why is every piece of hardware that I purchase...equipped with a listening device? ... Where is my physical shutter to cover my lens?" ... "...total fucking bullshit!...wait, wait, wait... it's not just privacy, we're talking about social control." "The idea that there is absence of intention, is a child." "Why are you coming to me, what are you seeking?"
1:12:58 going into discussion of what capitalists don't see about the worker that drives a desire for socialism. Check out his article on Anthropic capitalism and the new gimmick economy. Capitalists harping on the bootstrapping idea. "Nice is dead, good has a future... nice ends up with gulags!"
