Have you ever shown a friend a movie only to hear them say "I don't get it," as the credits roll? • @VioletGrey
      @VioletGrey Před 7 lety +3

I'm sure there is an aspect of being a poor audience that is at play. So many films are written with the lowest common denominator in mind that they spend a lot of screen time re-iterating information so people who checked out and back in somewhere along the way can play catch up to whats happening. They seem to be written more like TV shows which make sure to catch the audience back up to the action after every commercial break.

I get where people are coming from; it's just disappointing. As much as movies have thrown at them people seem to have lost the ability to understand the language of cinema as a storytelling form. What I find immensely frustrating is how people will constantly crow about, "show; don't tell" and then go on to display a startling inability to follow a series of images if there are no words associated with them. I don't know if this is because people don't pay attention to the imagery and have learned to rely on dialog to tell them what's happening or if people really don't understand how images can be used to tell a story.

No, The Butterfly Effect is utterly stupid. I was so angered watching it. The guy has the ability to change time, yet he does the dumbest things one after the another, just so they can end the movie with his self-sacraficing gesture. If he took a second to think his actions thru, he would realize how his actions in the past would affect his present. It wasn't about butterfly effect, as pretty much all of his actions pretty clearly led to where they ended up.

      Is the hotel actually haunted?

Does anything supernatural ever occur in the story?
What is the meaning of the picture at the end scene?

People at Looper: while BvS was a bit confusing in general, it was a perfect follow up to Man of Steel and has some great thematic elements throughout. Clearly the movie doesn't have a straightforward plot structure as many other comic book movies tend to have. In the movie, Bruce Wayne is old and experienced compared to other batman flicks. From Superman's perspective, in Man of Steel, he was a brand new hero and still testing his powers. That is one of the main reasons why he destroyed so much. Superman also thinks that he had no choice but to kill Zod. Compare this to Bruce's perspective, to him, Superman is a trigger happy alien coming to earth with tremendous power. Superman has just destroyed most of a city, and blatantly killed his enemy. To Bruce, this completely dehumanizes Superman. Another thing complained about in BvS was the "Martha" scene. What changed Bruce's mind is not that they have the same mother's name, but because he realizes that Superman even has a mother, thus humanizing Superman. Once Bruce realizes that Superman is a human too, he thinks back to all of the other moments in the film that he killed criminals outright. Just as in the Dark Knight, Bruce realizes again that you either die the hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. He notices that he has completely lost his ethics and has become an emotionless crime fighting machine. As for what motivates Wonder Woman... uh... I hope we see in the Wonder Woman movie (which really should have been released before BvS). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Arrival was a really solid sci-fi movie, that I would definitely recommend, but I wouldn't say it's "too smart" for someone. The movie tells you several times that time isn't linear. Then it connects our linear language to our linear perspective, then as the protagonist's understanding of language changes her perspective on time chances too. The premise might seem odd, but it just asks for the audience to suspend their disbelief a little.

Ok let me explain Batman v Superman..
The dream sequences - These are Batman's nightmares, however because of the Omega signs, it is also an easter egg for Superman's Regime story and Darkseid.
Jessie as Lex - He is Lex Luthor Junior, not Lex Luthor. He mentions that he is junior, and that his father built this company and he inherited it. So the father must be the original Lex because who else would name a company Lexcorp.
Martha Scene - Batman always figured Superman as an inhuman powerhouse, that he has no emotions, no family, no home. However because Batman was traumatised from young and he loved his mother, he was shocked to hear his mother's name said by a monster. After Louis tells him that Martha is Superman's mother, and seeing his girlfriend, he realises that Superman has family and has emotions. Finally seeing the human in Superman, he realises that he is becoming the monster he had sworn to protect Gotham from, going around killing whoever he feels threatening like an inhuman killer (You can infer this with the broken voice changer, making Batman sound like a monster). So he saves Superman mother out of guilt and to forgive Superman.
However we can all agree that the Martha scene was weird and uncomfortable. It definitely could've been done better, but this is just to tell you guys the meaning behind it.

You can watch this film 20x times and still don't understand the plot.
Only after some video analysis that is longer that movie itself and tons of articles, you would maybe grasp the plot, but final understanding comes after lot of reasearch and few years maybe.

Clifton Barnes Donnie leaves his house saving his life from the jet engine. This causes an alternative reality which will end on Halloween. He lives it out and tries to learn about time travel and wants to know how to cheat death again. But he learns that he himself can save the world by killing himself. The scenes with grammar death frank and his girlfriend play out. And he views the storm coming this is the “end of the world” he then sends the jet engine back i time with his mind (I know it’s not explained) and kills himself while that world ends the real world carries on except Donnie dies and as mentioned earlier in the film it’s quite said but he dies all in his own which is something he never wanted to do after he saw grandma death. Its a good film please watch videos explaining this film better than I did. It would be too much of a read. Many theories are that he remembers both timelines and that’s why he’s laughing because he did cheat death to only learn that you simply can’t. But idk it’s mostly up to your own interpretation.

For the record with Batman vs Superman, the reason that "Martha" works is because Batman did not see Superman as a man, he saw him as some foreign being who could destroy the Earth, hearing that he had a mother a woman who raised and loved him gave him a since of the amount of Love one has and that taking that from her would do the same thing to her, that it had done to him......the name Martha gave his villian a face

  • @EASY7356
    @EASY7356 Před 7 lety +429

SERIOUSLY the Name Martha has NOTHING to do with Batman stopping his Mission to kill Superman it is simply the Fact that Superman has a Mother
Bruce has until then only seen Superman as this Godlike Powerfull beein that can basically do whatever it wants and he was so focused on his "mission" that he never realised (until then) that Superman also has a Human side and a Family (or at least a mother) that loves him and that he also loves since the last thing that Superman thinks of before he is about to die is his Mother
AND THAT is what makes Batman realise that Superman isn't a selfish God that likes to play Savior and may at one Point turn against Earth but instead is just as "human" as normal Humans
I'm not saying it's the best Reason to End the Fight like that (The Dark Knight Ending with old Batman having a heart attack and faking his death after defeating Superman is much better)
But nobody seems to realise that IT IS NOT THE FUCKING NAME that makes Bruce stop but that Superman isn't what he thought he is (A selfish God that like to be praised as Savior and may turn against Earth) but a truly caring individual that moments before his death still thinks about other People instead of himself and has love for someone else (his mother) instead of hate for the Person that is about to kill him or other "self related thoughts"

That script is garbage, but honestly if done right the "Martha" scene could've been remembered as a great scene. Batman's morality is fucking awkward. I'll leave this here, Batman figured out who the other super heroes true identity, strength and weaknesses all on his own, why because he's the world's greatest detective. Superman is a journalist, none of these dudes did any research on each other and if they did, then they would've came to logical conclusions rather the solely relying on force and emotions.
That's the difference between the comic and movie characters. Even a broken Batman in the comics make more sense than this. Lex, Superman and Batman were all poorly done, and both super heroes could've never been toyed with by Lex so easily with such a silly convoluted plan!

I don't think it was the fact that Batman and Supermans moms names were the same that stopped him. I understood it as Batman coming to the realization that Superman even had a mother and their names being the same just kind of made him realize that...it humanized Superman in a way that Batman hadn't seen before. That being said, I'm really just playing Devils advocate because I thought it was pretty stupid and corny too and a pretty messy film. I was pleasantly surprised by Afflecks portrayal of Batman though.

On "the Martha moment": What happens there is basically that Batman realizes that in what would be his dying moments, Supermans greatest worry was the fate of a human being, and that this level of selflessness actually don't jibe well with the idea of Superman as a threat to humanity. To me, Batman vs Superman makes perfect sense.
And why the HELL should a dream sequence have to be explained? It is fairly self explanatory. Do we need to watch Bruce Wayne brush his teeth and put on his pajamas to realize this happens in his sleep? Give me a break!

The Butterfly Effect is amazing....it shows several truths we don't like to acknowledge. First, we don't accurately remember events in our own lives. When the main character goes back in time to fix problems, it takes many tries before he realizes HE and his presence in these situations contributes to the problems! None of us want to know that. Also...there is an old truth that the people who run together in a pack influence each other's behavior. No matter how hard he tries to fix his mistakes, as long as he continues to hang out with his childhood buddies, all of them have their lives destroyed, over and over, in every scenario. Some people really should not be together. The happy ending comes when he realizes he can't get what he wants; a life with the childhood love he lost. But by letting her go, everyone has a happy ending. *** Deep stuff. Serious stuff. Only a pea brain could not appreciate this.

Despite realising her daughter's death and separation from her husband were in the future, she still chose to love Renner's character and, presumably, accept her fate.

There is also the setting up of the emotional resonance between the death of his parents an dthe attack in Metropolis that resulted in the loss of Wayne Financial. Also the narration over the opening is vitally important in informing Bruce's character in the movie.
"There was a time before, a time above. There were perfect things; diamond absolutes. But things fall, things on earth. And what falls is fallen."
And in reference to the bats,
"In the dream they took me into the light. A beautiful lie."
I will freely admit I didn't really fully grasp how important this narration was until I was speaking with some other interested fans. The narration fits with and supports Bruce's arc in the film and shows that this is not just a re-hashing of the origin but an important part of setting up the character and where he is, emotionally, in the movie. If someone wants to dismiss this or see the Metropolis battle as just a flashback, or think it's merely saying, "This is why Bruce hats Superman" then I think a lot of what is going on in the movie will not work for them.
But that is not the movies fault. It's right there, on the screen. One just has to be willing to see it.

So I watch these clips to find potential movies to watch, doesn't work so well when the clip gives away all the major details!

I had to watch it three times because it was a bit confusing with all those characters jumping timelines as different characters as they reincarnate, but I thought it really was a brilliant movie.

no worries Marcela. Its not you, its the movie. It tells 4 or 5 different stories but only gives you 5 minutes of each part so you'll have 3 or 4 different 5 minute stories processing in your head b4 seeing the continuation of the 1st one. Its the stupidest thing. Why follow the story if they dont want you following it?
Its like reading 4 bedtime story books but only reading the first pages of each book, and then the 2ng, and then the sunovabee-otch! lol ....eventually the kid will go "STOP. i think i will just count some sheep"

  • @JustChillingOnTattoine

It is wierd that you do not mention the source material behind these movies...like "Story of Your Life" behind Arrival or Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" behind Dawn of Justice...they help to make sense of the movies (well, less for Dawn of justice because of the alterations to the plot)

As a long time fan of the Alien franchise, I have to say that I really like Prometheus despite it's short comings. I don't know where you guys get the notion that Prometheus is almost universally disliked, when in fack the film received mostly positive reviews and it was the reception from fans and movie Go er's that was mixed and that to me hardly resembles a universal consensus. And I hate to rant but saying Only God Forgives is overblown and telling people it's ok that they did not get it because there was never nothing to get, is asinine. This film is a masterpiece to some and pretentious to others but one things for sure there is something THERE. Anyway I'm done talking about movies, making them is more my style....stay blessed

haha just because you dont understand what the movie was about doesn't mean it is bad. I love people nowadays with their black or white opinions on movies... its either great or terrible. Only God Forgives takes studying. Take a look at Chris Stuckmann's analysis. It's great

Only God Forgives is a goddamn solid film. You're absolutely right! You have to pay very close attention, which means putting the phones down and not diddling on facebook while the movie is playing.

All of the films made by that director are really well made films. If you have not yet seen any of his other movies, I would highly recommend them. I think my favorite of the ones that I have seen is probably Valhalla Rising.

Only God Forgives is a masterpiece. One of the truly great films of our time. The complex subtleties and hidden symbolism's are on the same level as Kubrick's 2001. Definitely my favourite Nicolas Winding Refn film (yes I like it better than Drive). I think it will stand the test of time and years from now people will begin to admire its genius.

I will just leave this here:
      /watch?v=5we-SqmS_4E
Perfectly sums up why the movie is stupid and the fact that you pretend to 'understand' it then elevate it to the level of perfection then on top of that insinuate that you are somehow of higher intelligence because of it...it's just a disgusting personality trait to have and I despise people like you.

Only God Forgives is a movie that's hard on the surface but really smooth on the inside. A highly underrated movie that demands a second watch AND for you to really think about the symbolism in each scene!
