When an Actor Is Too Dedicated - Christian Bale

- Christian Bale is dedicated. He's one of the best lead actors this century and can become the character like no other. Starring in films like American Psycho, The Machinist, Batman Begins, The Fighter, American Hustle, Vice and Ford v Ferrari had him jumping around in weight going from super skinny, to jacked to sporting a proper belly. But the physical transformations aren't the only thing as he immerses himself in the character on and off the set.
We'll be looking through Christian Bale's career when he was at his most dedicated. Physical changes, behavioural changes and putting himself through whatever the character went through. This will include doing his own stunts and speaking in his character's accent in interviews and even on set rants...

What are your favorite Christian Bale performances?
that's hard he kills it in pretty much everything he's in but for me its between American psycho and the fighter
Unoriginal but I have to go with Patrick Bateman. Your videos are really good and severely underrated. Keep it up 👍

To go from the machinist to batman in 6 months, i dont think he was eating ice cream and pizza. Dude was on GEAR 😂😂😂
Sadly most actors are, and super unhealthy crash diets and workouts on top of that
@@gabriyelmastrianna8864 I think Edward Norton going from primal fear to American History X and Christian Bale going from Machinist to Batman are the 2 most obvious "I did at least a cycle of steroids" roles ever 😂
Derek from MpMd breaks it down. Go check it out.
@@TheKeelhaulingCommitteeGod, now that you point it out.
Edward Norton was so incredibly good in those roles though
Steroids would've gotten much better results.
Christian Bale deserves to get his own biopic film.
He'd do himself, go from machinist, to Vice All over again lol
then who would lose the weight 😂😂
whos gonna play it himself?
@@navaroshtanson7751 haha true😂
who. Who can ?
To be fair to Bale yelling at the cinematographer, as I understand it, the cinematographer in question had a reputation for walking around during takes and fiddling with equipment, which many actors found distracting, but they just put up with it. Bale was the first actor to call him out, and lot of people in Hollywood applauded him for it.
I really don’t think Bale handled that situation correctly. And maybe if any of those other actors bothered to have a private conversation with him, Bale going full English Psycho on him wouldn’t have happened.
I'm sorry but that's not how you handle the situation
It was the DP! (Director of photography). They're basically second in charge on set, and they were waling around, DURING A TAKE, taking light readings! One of the most unprofessional things someone can do on set. Bale was 100% in the right.
@@jeffersonhassan4558 It is a valid way to handle a situation. I'm sure the cinematographer stopped strolling around afterwards
@@mrdimitroff it's a subjective way but a wrong way in my opinion
i look like christian bale, just don't ask me which version
The Pocahontas one
I'm the Batman Begins one
I am the Arab version plus bald because of recent haircut.

I'm the Terminator one
Another insane sign of dedication was he somehow forced one of his eyes to be lazy, to mirror Michael Burry’s glass eye in the big short
thats actually insane
What the fuck bro
It's an impressive feat but it's not something too wild it's something you can be trained to do with enough effort and time.
It's just controlling your eye at a high level then most people aim to. He more or less was forcing his vision apart and only keeping 1 eye tracked on the intended target which is what happens if you have a false eye or "lazy eye" were it'll drift time to time depending on the person it can be small or large.
@@malec8517yeah, but most actors are lazy, look at Hemsworth instead of working out harder he had to use cgi, had it been bale he would have gymmaxxed
@@Autonomous_17 oh for sure, just mean for bale already being top tier actor in same cases possible best actor of his life time.
The lazy is "easy" for him in respect and others at his level of the craft. But still impressive.
The Prestige was fantastic. Bale and Jackman made the impossible seem believable
Right I am surprised he didn't mention it!!
One of my favorite movies. It didn’t really have any extreme physical transformations but it did have him acting with himself which was itself a challenge.

I think Christian Bale is the most dedicated actor of modern times. Other actors would have said CGI could handle them looking skin and bones, or put on a fat suit, and a fat prosthetic face to be Dick Chaney, but he actually does it to be as real as possible, otherwise people don’t buy it.
I mean people shouldnt do this. All those chances definitely affects the body
@@cngotham4111 Oh, I definitely agree on that. He’s a bit crazy to be doing that to his body. I can imagine how that might affect his family to watch him do this to himself. Can’t be easy for them. But Bale does have a dedication to his roles that I don’t see very often these days.
@@lizlandes500I mean if they know he does it for the role and out of love and passion for his profession, and not for personal reasons or medical issues. I don't see the problem...
@@localbanana. I agree. What he does, he says, is how he gets into his character. I think it’s great, though IMH being so thin for The Machinist was not that healthy. He said he also smoked and drank a lot, which is never healthy for anyone. But he is DEVOTED to his work, and that makes him one of the greatest actors of my generation. ❤️
Bale has every muscle in his control. Top act@@lizlandes500
Christian Bale gave a very compelling interview about his working style while he was filming "Vice". He said "I am not a trained actor, I don't have it in me to perform in a certain way out of nothing. Therefore I try to become the person that I play". And than he shared some experience on how weight and hunger change his mood. Following up he told that his wife liked his "vice-shape" because it made him a relaxed guy.
Chill dad-bod embracer.
Yes some people think it is pretentious but I think method acting can be because of insecurity.
@@inthefade why would it be pretentious? people are insecure about the weirdest stuff, honestly.
i don’t need to push for him to be considered one of the greatest of all time, i’m just a big fan. While he does bring a lot of physicality and emotion to his roles, he’s an example of one of those actors that disappears completely. I don’t see christian bale, just the character he is playing, and as great as his emotional outbursts in movies are, i also value an actor that just becomes the character
Same with Denzel Washington and vin Diesel
@@naushabatalat1332 totally! personally i haven’t seen much from denzel but he easily has my respect

So you're telling me Christian Bale could literally compete in every single men's mma weight class available?? Flyweight, Featherweight, Light, Welter, Middle, LHW and HW???? His weight movements are absolutely amazing.
I’m afraid Bale doesn’t have a Welsh accent, he was born there but his accent is very much a north London one.
I was gonna say that. People want to claim he's Welsh (especially the Welsh) but he'll even tell you he's not Welsh.
@@dungcheeseMORK999 your accent determines if youre welsh? weird i thought where youre born determines that
@@chowder333ethnically he isnt welsh but nationally he is
@@chowder333 So if I'm born in Jamaica and raised in England I'm not English?
@@prophecybydefault4708 I think it's mostly where you were raised and where your parents are from, the latter being a less important part. By all accounts I'm northern, but my identity is largely shaped by where I grew up.
A perfect example of a man who doesnt care what people say and stays dedicated to what he loves even if people dont believe in him.
Christian Bale and Gary Oldman are the best actors of this era
Hardly
@@JaysonT1 Best method actors. Oldman or someone else i dont really remember, said something about putting on an act and really acting it. What makes a good actor and a great one far apart. One that becomes the character and the other merely acts like one. Oldman did an interview where he said he did have times where his roles we're starting to take over his life or his actual character and behavior. Something that can actually make a person go insane. Some actors likely do go too far. Like heath ledger with the joker. Locking himself in a room preparing for the role was too much.
Daniel Day-Lewis is another who takes acting to the next level.
Dont forget RDJ
And Damien Lewis! @@Durwood71
I am afraid for his health but the dedication he does as an actor is insane
Bale was.born in Wales, to English parents and grew up in Bourmouth, England. Bale's real accent is a working class Southeast England accent which is on the.other side of the UK.
i lived in bournemouth for some years and i really liked it. interesting...
Funny how Brits think anyone can tell the difference
@@trentbatemanif you heard an actual welsh accent you could definitely tell the difference

A true master of his craft, no matter the genre, money, or the character Bale always seems to go full send and is dedicated to his performance.
Oh my god, it’s kind of cute to hear how he was so invested in his roles as a kid already. Little Christian was so smart.
He’s such an incredible actor. I love the various films he’s made and have been astonished by all of his performances, but his portrayal of Bruce Wayne/Batman is my favorite and even to a good extent, the best he’s done. The different personas he plays is truly well done. He nailed the three sides of Bruce Wayne. He nailed Batman amazingly, channeling the kind of anger and pain Bruce would exhume as Batman and intimidated the normal every night criminal very effectively. While people make fun of his voice, it’s smart he’d have to change it considering how Bruce Wayne is well known and people would know his voice, it also works due to the more grounded version of the character he’s playing. Also, they tweaked with his voice in the sequels as Christopher Nolan wanted Batman to sound darker, yet Bale wasn’t able to achieve what he wanted without completely losing his voice. He got the playboy version of Bruce Wayne down where he seems a bit full of himself, to where people see him as too self absorbed to be selfless enough to be Batman as well as being a very good philanthropist while being a billionaire, which also comes into his portrayal as the real Bruce that people like Alfred Fox, Rachel and eventually Blake and Selina see, where he’s able to actually be himself and not have a persona around those he’s close with. Bruce Wayne is a very selfless character in many regards and the fact so few people will ever get to see the real Bruce Wayne kinda makes it special to all those who are close to him. The fact that this one role across three films gave Bale so much to work with and he truly became Bruce Wayne/Batman in that he took it seriously and never made fun of the character, sort of like what Adam West did in the 60s where he was completely sincere in his portrayal of the character, I truly love his performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman. His portrayal of the character is what I wanted to see back in the 90s and early 2000s and I’m glad Bale auditioned and got the part. Of course the writing and direction had a good hand in what Bale did in The Dark Knight Trilogy, but he absolutely knew how to play the character from not just the script and talking to Nolan, but by also reading some comics beforehand in order to understand the character. Not only did he give a hell of a performance in all three films, but he was able to get more opportunities that may not have happened if it wasn’t for Batman. He’s a very well deserved Academy Award Winner, but should have more nominations and wins, and continues to show his versatility in whatever project he takes on. Sorry for the long comment, but this is very well done and Bale is one of my favorite actors. Also, Bales accent is English, not Welsh. He was only born in Wales, but raised predominately in England when he was young. He’s since become an American citizen, but prior to that he was English. Keep up the great work!
The really fucked up thing is that if Bruce Wayne funneled the billions he paid towards bat paraphernalia into things like a social safety net, affordable healthcare, housing and education, and prisons being rehabilitative rather than all punishment in Gotham, he wouldn't have needed to be Batman at all, because the supervillians would get the psychiatric help they need and have no stock of people with no hope to take on as henchmen to build themselves a power base.
The Christopher Nolan Batman films were great entertainment, but rather than being superhero films, they should be taken as a critique of late stage capitalism, where a billionaire would rather spend billions on special equipment to allow them to go around city every night beating up poor people (Who still have no options, but now have life changing injuries or a grieving family) than spend it on actually solving the social problems creating the crime in the first place.

He's been one of my favorites since I saw Empire of the Sun, which is still one of my favorite films, sometimes it dosen't matter the movie, if He is in, I watch it, he's always dedicated, he did the best he could in Thor even if it isn't his best role (ny Mom said it reminded her of Palpatine), Bale said he didn't like the experience and dosen't want to do another superhero movie, fine, those Marvel movies aren't worth his talent.

He's my favorite actor by far, and certainly the greatest actor of his generation. The absurd range he has, and the commitment are astounding.
