    By watching Magnus play blitz, I have gained a small appreciation for how truly knowledgeable he is about chess, and makes me better understand why he is so dominant. His analysis is accurate, simple, and instantaneous. He's a monster at positional chess and just as good at tactics. I don't know if there's a point to my comment, but I guess I want to say that I am inspired when I watch him and that is why I subscribed to this channel. Thanks for these videos!

    • @chrisjames1905
      @chrisjames1905 Před 5 lety +51

      The thing that I have learnt from watching his games - and I had pretty much given up hope of getting better! - is just to keep things simple. This guy is maybe the best player ever, but you see when he's playing these games that he sticks to pretty simple conceptions and ideas. Of course, he has the advantage of seeing so much more than most GMs, let alone average players, and being a brilliant calculator, but his thought processes are straightforward and easily comprehensible. Quite often he isn't calculating loads, even in classical chess.
      I played a bit of blitz after watching him the other day, and I won 8 and lost 1 (and I should have won that one). I gained 150 points on lichess, and beat someone 400 points better than me (albeit I should be higher rated than I am, but I've become lazy and unmotivated).
      I don't know if I've become a better player, but watching Carlsen has reiterated to me that aggressive but unsound moves don't work. Be patient. Play solidly. Cut out your errors. Be hard on yourself when you do make avoidable errors. That's how to get good.

      I found 5 Important Elements of Playing a good game in Chess based on Magnus' games.
      1. Your Pawn Structure must be impregnable and strong. Any hole would mean weakness in that area.
      2. You must develop and move your Promoted Pieces into the fray before its too late for you to counter-attack.
      3. Your must be positionally placing your pieces in tactical and defended places in the Board and set-up traps to discover weaknesses on the Opponent's Side.
      4. Your pieces must be actively working and coordinating together side-by-side.
      5. If you can't win, play for a Draw.

  • @Marcv1285
    @Marcv1285 Před 5 lety +5

    0:48 Nxe5 looks very juicy. If pawn takes Knight, then the Queen comes into play at h5. Then he has to move his king to an awkward square to avoid Queen at e5 forking rook and king. You probably want to snatch that pawn on e5 anyway. You are down a pawn but it feels like big compensation for the material having his king in the middle without any of his piece developped. I'm not sure how best to follow the attack but that line looks very ugly for black.

    • @confucheese
      @confucheese Před 5 lety +1

      It looks pretty awful for black at first but I don’t think white can generate an attack in time.
      After Qh5+ Kd7 it seems whites only options are Qxe5 or d3, trying to get the dark bishop in the game. But black can stabilize fairly easily with Nf6 followed by Be6 on the next move.
      Trying to break open the position with exd5 doesn’t seem to work either, Nf6 and Be6 again from black seem to tidy things up quickly, and with the e file open black can start some counter play with Re8. (Which is actually quite a problem for white because his king is still on the e file)
      Perhaps in a bullet match it could be advantageous but in a 5 minute game I don’t think it’s dangerous enough for black to warrant the sacrifice.

    does anyone know why black did not use pawn at C6 to take pawn at D5? would have then had a chance at both white's knight and bishop.

    he is being very gracious this is an interesting format play against the champ, being realistic the only chance you would have is he does not get bored out of his head and completely go brain dead. for those of you, that like getting crushed just get a computer and turn it up a notch same result..but I am sure the paycheck keeps that little twinkle in his eye.great vid i am most impressed the way he sees things amazing great vid btw

      I am sure Magnus doesn't need a paycheck from online streaming, and he doesn't get a twinkle in his eye from that.
      Have you seen how much prize money he makes with the world championships?
      Also, for what it's worth, he doesn't even care about the money or the title, what he cares about is being #1 (on the rating list).

      Nobody got into chess for the money or chess groupies.
      We want a pure intellectual challenge, the result of which is precisely correlated to effort in learning, practice, and knowledge.
      And being able to beat other people for being too weak, or too slow.

      Check out "Hillbilly Attack" by GM Simon Williams on Chess.com. He has explained it pretty well. I often play Hillbilly attack against Caro Kann in bullet. You get great attacking chances after e4 c6 Bc4 d5 Bb3 dxe4 Qh5 g6 Qh4 Nf6 Nc3 Bf5 f3 . The other line is e4 c6 Bc4 d5 Bb3 dxe4 Qh5 e6 Nc3 Nf6 Qh4 Nd7 Nxe4 Nxe4 Qxe4. In this line, black's light square is trapped behind the pawn chain which is quite bad in Caro kann.
