      honestly, Levy's skill level is so much higher than his average viewer, he may as well be Magnus. It's like trying to fight a grizzly bear (magnus) or a Gorilla (Levy). A Grizzly could easily destroy a Gorilla... But to us, fighting either would be an impossible task and both opponents would feel like fighting God.

      Levy is far more animated (a good thing!) than somebody like Eric Rosen, who is more like the Mr. Rogers of chess. They are both accomplished players who are also outstanding teachers - but with completely different styles. If I had to compare them to comedians, I'd say Eric Rosen is Steven Wright whereas Levy Rozman is closer to Sam Kinison.

    I brought my students to their first tournament, a small local one with 20 scholastics and 20 open. Imagine my shock when I discovered the top player was rated almost 2500, 400 points higher than the next highest rated player. My kids ended up getting their first ratings between 101 and 186.

      He is so experienced and his life revolves around chess but for some reason he didn’t really try to make progress in that position, a pawn break, attack, nothing just bad defensive playing against someone that probably is not even 2000 he just took advantage of levy’s passiveness. For example, throwing his queen out in the enemy side if the board

    This was really instructive! I think we've all been in games where they just get a lock on your pawn breaks and you only way forward is a sac. Seeing when that window opens is a skill worth investing in. Whole Board Awareness might be worthy of its own Chessly drills? Thanks for sharing Levy!

    I was impressed with Derek's composed demeanor. When I saw that - I knew he was no beginner. I thought to myself, "That guy has been behind a chess board before." I also got the impression that Derek was mostly trying to beat you on time - just creating an impenetrable fortress to frustrate you.

      no it doesn't. Levy was pranked into thinking the ELO was different, therefore played a totally different style that is effective versus beginners. This was an unfair game, and so there is no shame in losing here.

      he was going hard, he just played the wrong moves because he was anticipating beginner responses. This game was unfair as Levy was tricked into playing a different style that is more effective against beginners.

    Every loss is an opportunity to sharpen skills, every fall an opportunity to stand stronger and wiser than before. Wins feed the ego but losses remind us the there is always further to travel, things to learn and remind us that it is more attractive to be humble in defeat than an overbearing winner consumed by their own ego. How boring life becomes when you run out of road. Keep trucking Levy, you're an excellent player, a brilliant commentator and more importantly a fine and eminently likable human being! ✌️
