give it a decade or two and they will reboot those franchises as soon as they think there is a market again. just look at how many times the batman franchise has been remade. you have the corny live action batman from the 1940s, the movie series from the 1990s, the animated cartoons from the 1990s, the dark knight trilogy, etc.. same thing happened with X-Men, Star Trek, and many others.
big franchises don't die, they just go into hibernation for a few years until a new director/studio wants to try again.

Also writing a great character matter way more than their gender. Yor (from Spy X Family), Maomao (from Apothecary Diaries), Rishe (from 7th time loop) and Aileen (from Villainess Taming the final Boss) are all amazing and badass because of who they are, not what what they are. The first 3 minutes of a 4 minute speech was about women in the army in the 80s and how they aren't allowed to be in combat situations even though, and i quote, "women can do all the things men do in the army". She spoke about how women would need to leave the army if they fell pregnant. Regardless of validity of any of what she said is, ANZAC day is not the vehicle to use for gender politics to a primary school with kids aged 6-12.

Look at 2000s Static Shock cartoon - literally had an episode where titular Black protag and his White BFF got kidnapped and their fathers went to look for kids... But White Father was a racist... Not a caricature of one... A reasonable person with flaws. Flaws that didn't came out of nowhere - his world view became like that because for years he was social worker in ghetto and was dissapointed again and again by deeds of local black people. And MC's Black Father calls him out on it, reminds that every person is different and they MUST put their prejudices aside and work TOGETHER to find their sons and just BE BETTER for the sake of their sons even if their life experiences make it hard for them.
And it wasn't presented like preaching - it was exactly presented like one parent talking to the other. Heck, racist White Father was specifically presented as a very decent person aside for his flaw not as a BAD person. Just a man who had actual reasons to have a worldview he had and reflected on his actions by the end of episode deciding to be better for the sake of his son.
You can even argue that moral of the story was not just "Racism is bad" but "Parents have to try to better themselves for the sake of their kids" using "Racism" as the example of a "flaw" one can have.

Unfortunately, Asmon underestimates just how deep this goes, and why Marvel is in the position it is in. Marvel and the people they hire actively consider it a GOOD thing to have never read the comics. Much like how the companies that hire the DEI consultancy groups are just as much to blame as the consultancy groups, they go out of their way to hire/cast people who aren't fans.

no one asks the right questions in these situations because they want to appear to be right and smart rather than doing whats needed
    11:18
The question to ask him here is a simple one "Why is it important to have a diverse cast?"
Why does it matter? He'll respond with "to identify with the characters we need representation."
You then respond with "so you're saying minorities cannot identify with characters that don't look like them?"
Because that's what the source of this is on the face of it - it isn't the actual reality but that's an aside - the point that needs t obe made is that these people are saying "I can only identify if I see someone like me on screen." and to do it to as big an audience as possible while saying you are the opposite. "doesn't matter to me what they look like, white black blue yellow green pink it doesn't matter, it's the person that's important not what they look like, you can identify with John MacLane equally as much as you can Mike Lowrey or Ip Man. If you think you can't do that without them looking like you, I'm sorry but you're the bigot." and let that be the end of it.

This applies no matter what demographic the character belongs to. But, we're lucky to see a lot of these new characters make any decisions at all and if they are forced to make one, more often than not it's a brain dead easy one to make or they just shrug until something happens to make the challenge go away. All the while you're being TOLD either by some side character, the character themselves, or marketing just how awesome they are.

If we have to stare at something for hours at a time, it might as well be appeasing. Gamers DO NOT CARE about representation we just want something fun to look at. Whether it's Kratos godlike physique and tattoos or 2B's greatest assets. We DON'T care about seeing ourselves in games as long as the main character is good looking or well written. In music, I love picking out the different instruments, Dog fights in songs especially, the closest rock gets to this is dueling guitar solos.
Much like how a dark souls player enjoys learning timing and move sets, they have patience beyond measure at times, take those same players, would likely hate playing the cokefuel run n' gun fest that is the latest CoD. Its not that the diversity or "wokeness" ruins the movie. Its that the movie is so damn smug about it. You can have a character that fits into a minority show their strength or intelligence without going "ugh. A girl teaching another girl to read? Isn't one enough?" (Even worse is that in beauty and thw beast its set in a time period where women were educated and often well read. So its smug AND inaccurate)
Take Aliens for example. Ripley gets no respect from the Marines who look down at her because she's a civilian. But they never walk up to her and monologue about how little respect they have for her 2 minutes before a xenomorph attacks. Its all shown through how they treat her vs how they treat each other. As soon as the threat is shown to be real they shape up real quick and even start looking up to her as a leader because she proves to be smart and brave even though she lacks training.
Another good one is Mulan. The animated movie was fantastic at showing that even though mulan was physically weaker than a good few of the men, she was clever and resourceful. She earned her respect. She didnt have crazy super powers that "only men were supposed to have" like in the live action movie.

    Esther is based af.
Also, Black Panther is from 2018 - before Endgame - and the second one was a bust. They have to stop using that as an example. Even Bob did it in the shareholder meeting. It's bad analysis and a clear lack of understanding the market.

I'd hardly call 859 mil a bust, no Marvel movie is gonna hit over a Billion anymore. It's franchise fatigue and the general audience basically being done with superhero genre in general.

    • @habama1077
      @habama1077 Před měsícem +2

@@ChrisDeebo We don't really know the numbers, but 859 mil is aboslutely not that great a number, when we consider how much the cinemas take, and the fact the actual cost of the movie nowadays is about twice its budget (marketing and all that).
Estimates put profit at 260 mil, while 170 mil of that is from streaming. Money that Disney gets to decide how to attribute, as the whole system is theirs. So, anywhere between 90 and 260 million dollars. Not terrible, but not a milestone either.
Compared to previous years' movies, it absolutely underperformed, and that is the best outcome from that year. It's not a good look.

To me, it boils down to this... I don't watch a movie to be "taught a lesson" or be "educated". I watch a movie to be entertained, period, end of story. If entertainment (ie story) value in a movie is sacrificed on the altar of a "cause" no matter how just it is, it kills the engagement for me.

sad part is the could teach a less or educate, but that requires good writing, good direction and attention to detail. They don't do any of the three. they need to go back to writing a full script, a good script review, storyboarding and using a plan and not a bunch of reshoots to try and duct tape scenes to a movie without a plan.

I would say, shogun and black panther are both examples of movies with almost no diversity. The trick is that by focusing completely on african or japanese people, it escapes the normal hollywood need for deconstructing every modernist story telling element. BP for instance is a king of an ethnic monarchy, who rules by divine right, and hes the good guy. By being so "diverse" they escape the woke, and that makes them much more likely to be good.
