      I agree. On top of that, if we can have a movie night at someone’s home in a couple weeks with friends, food and drinks WHY THE FCK would I shell out a small fortune to check it out at a theater where I’ll roll the dice of being in a theater with jerks that talk through the whole thing.
      Streaming has kinda had the industry shoot themselves in the foot for box office income. For example when I was a kid if I really wanted to see The Abyss, we gotta convince our parents to take us to the movie because if we miss it, it’s gonna be at least a year before it’s at Blockbuster and at least two years before it’s on HBO so you have to get off your ass if you wanna see this thing. Especially if everyone’s talking about it.
      Nowadays, if all I gotta do is wait a few weeks and it comes to my ass: Why bother going to the theater? Seriously.

      When a video is titled "Here's why, furiosa failed" it is inherently inviting a conversation of why people thought it failed.
      It astounds me how one group of people wonders why movies didn't make as much money. A bunch of people helpfully tell you why they didn't go. Followed by the an angry response because it isn't the reason they wanted. This cycle then repeats over and over again.
      When one side doesn't want to listen to the other and constantly seeks to devalue anything they say (right or wrong) of course they are going to check out and not want to participate anymore. Mexican IronMan: Why pay $20 for ticket + snacks + drinks + gas + parking to watch a too long questionably good/bad/meh futuristic dystopian movie starring a female lead, when for the same price, you can go to Chicago/San Francisco/New York/whichever closest democrat's stronghold that displays the same type of insanity? People in the 80's went to watch Mad Max because life was good and that fictitious future was so alien, it was pure entertainment. Whereas nowadays, a Furiosa movie is our present day reality next door. Not some hypothetical future but what's happening already, right now. People go to the cinema for escapism, not to get slapped with more reminders of the same everyday reality reported in the news.
    Chato: For futuristic action movies with female leads, and considering the target audience of such genre is predominantly male, why would male viewers want to watch pretty actresses dewomanized and uglified to the max? No babes for the male gaze.

    My favorite Mad Max movie is Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. I've probably watched it 30 times. It's probably the greatest post-apocalyptic action movie ever. Thunderdome is way more stylized, highly quotable, and with many, MANY, memorable scenes and characters but the appeal of Road Warrior is it's none of that. Road Warrior has style but it's not completely over the top. The Road Warrior is laconic, just a few pages of dialogue in the entire film. It has camp (like the Lord Humongous) but the camp is operatic, cruel and sparse. Road Warrior has one of the longest car chases in cinematic history yet the movie isn't bloated and over two-and-a-half hours long. It's visceral, brutal, unforgiving, and fast. And it ends with a heroic sacrifice.
    I only half wanted to see Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga but the price of admission is just too high when I know it's going to be free on streaming in the future. The other reason I didn't watch it in theaters is I'm tired of the bait-n-switch. Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness was a massive bait-n-switch. Hollywood burned that bridge. We know this is called "a Mad Max saga" but there's no Mad Max. A saga is a heroic tale. If it's a "Mad Max saga" then where is he?

    If during the opening scene of Road Warrior when Max slams the brakes in a four wheel lockup, inducing wheelhop on the right rear, does not give you instant goosebumps, you are not a petrolhead, and thus not a Mad Max fan.
    And the Fury films are not Mad Max films. They are cheap modern knock offs of the worst kind.

    This film was originally conceived as an anime, and it predates Fury road as a script, and had tons of production difficulties. I think it should have come out first as originally was intended. It might have carried in that case, but they probably wanted to push the mad max connection. Yeah the movie is unnecessary as it stands. The actress is good but lacked gravitas that Mad Max has and his story. The story of this one place in the apocalypse, and world building, feels super grounded and stunted to have two whole movies in a world we know is a lot larger. They could have explored the world as Walking Dead is doing in this movie, not just sat in the same place. I think that's more the reason of the failure than anything, lack of world-building and centering on a character that everyone is ambivalent to in the first place. Yup.
    I would have way rather seen a prequel about Tina Turner's character Aunty Entity, let alone a continuation and what happened to that place than Furiosa. This movie is the same movie as the last one, same characters, same places....just minor things that we didn't need to see. That's its real fault, it's not adventurous enough.

    Everybody in this comment section is so unbelievably ignorant of this movie's history and George Miller as a director. Desperately wanting to label this film as "girlboss, feminist trash" even though it's writing can be traced back to the early 2000s - an era in which these concepts were extremely uncommon in mainstream media. Written by a man now in his 70s who has never made the suggestion that he's attempting to shoe-horn in any kind of modern agenda. This script is a by product of the immense backstory writing that went into Fury Road, about a character that George feels passionate about. Nothing more, nothing less.
    This movie is not "hijacking a male lead franchise". It's an expansion of the world and the characters we saw in Fury Road. There's a reason this movie is not called 'Mad Max: Furiosa" - it is it's own entity within the Mad Max universe as described in the subtitle "A Mad Max Saga". Whether it was a necessary addition is an entirely different conversation - a more productive one I'd say.
    This movie and Fury Road are the best case scenario for female lead movies as they don't give into the "girlboss" tropes. But you wouldn't know that cause you reject it on sight.

    A more interesting spinoff film would have been about the backstory of Immortan Joe and how the War Boys came to be along with more information about the world and different towns/leaders like Gas Town and Bullet Farm, with the protagonist we follow being Nux.
    We could see his journey from childhood to where he ended up in Fury Road and Furiosa could have been a side character within the film.
    Nux was a far more compelling character than Furiosa in Fury Road and had the best arc within the film imo.

I liked Fury Road and I would have been fairly amenable to a follow up even if it was for a secondary character that I didn't find particularly interesting.
    The problem is that many moons have passed since Fury Road and we're now into an era of Hollywood dominated by crappy remakes and radical Feminist ideological drivel. In this environment you can kinda understand why people might be steering clear of Furiosa.

    2) It’s a prequel for a character that wasn’t all that popular to begin with and didn’t need a prequel as her back story is explained in Fury Road.
    3) Audiences are tired of female centric reimaginings of traditionally male franchises.
    4) Fury Road came out almost a decade ago and wasn’t that big a hit either.

    I saw it yesterday and got thought it was decent. Not mind blowing but far from awful. Good acting (chris hemsworth as the villain i thought was fun), great action, good cinematography. Its not a bad film by any stretch. But its like you said: the time was too much. 9 years for a spinoff? It would have made more sense to do it then when you could have ridden the high from Fury Road. Having the recap and the "a Mad Max saga" sub title showed how much they had to catch people up and remind them what franchise its a part of. Again i dont think it was bad. But it just came way too late for it to have any relevancy.

You know, jacked-up Linda Hamilton from Terminator 2 or Michiko Nishiwaki from My Lucky Stars -- you're welcome, by the way.
    But no, they had to go with bug-eyed Anya-Taylor Joy, the least imposing actress they could find. Bloody hell, she somehow looks more frail than Immortan Joe's brood mares from Fury Road.

    I certainly intend to go see it on the big screen, and I haven’t been to the cinema for many years.
    But shame it’s “flopped” if indeed it has, it could make back it’s money later in the long term?
    But insofar as it has bombed then yeah I suppose cry wolf is accurate enough and not having Max in a MM film is a bit counterintuitive.
    That said I am eager to see more of Furiousa as a character albeit a lot of that was how Charlize Theron smashed it out of the park as an actress, ATJ? I’m not really turning up for her and am a bit puzzled by the casting choice, but hope to be pleasantly surprised.

  • @wornoutshoes81
    @wornoutshoes81 Před 2 měsíci +1

    I tried reviewing the film on Rotten Tomatoes all weekend. I even tried today multiple times. Rotten Tomatoes is protecting this film by censoring reviews. Why? To protect “the message”. The film was bad. Outside of your girl boss theory. It was plagued with horrible CGI from beginning to end such that it didn’t look finished and repeatedly pulled me out of the experience. Anya Taylor Joy sounds like she was dubbed over with Charlize Theron. Chris Hemsworth gives a performance akin to an amalgamation of Drunk Thor and Kevin from GB2016. His character was poorly written and should have “exited the film” halfway through allowing the only good male lead Praetorian Jack, to double cross and try and kill Furiosa and turn her in to Immortan Joe after learning of the Green Place, effectively cementing her hate for Immortan Joe and establishing why she stuck around to take the females and why she distrusts all men until Max. But what do I know? I’m just a writer. The film is not good. It’s just this side of terrible. It’s right there with Thunderdome. The chases are good and that’s about it. Furiosa is the irradiated cousin of the good film that we don’t discuss. 👎🏻

  • @UToobUsername01
    @UToobUsername01 Před 2 měsíci

    It's like the Ghost busters thing: when Ghost busters 2016 came out people were disapointed that the original GB were not in it.
    Mad Max Fury Road prequel is just more of a character that is not Max. It's not that Furiosa herself isn't necessarily good as a character, just that people wanted to see Max. It's like getting a star wars movie but instead of a movie about jedi it's about droids or moisture farmers. That story about the droids and moisture farmers might actually be GOOD. But it's not what audience asked for or expected to see. Imagine if they made a movie about Harley Quinn who we know is a Joker-related character. If people are told the movie about the joker will have the joker in it but it's 99% about Harley Quinn then people will wonder why they didn't just name it Harley Quinn instead of The Joker. The business man knows why: the Joker is universally recognised so attract more viewers. But the audience will feel like they were deceived. It's click bait for movies.
