I had my daughter time me and i did this same test with 32oz large wonton soup container. Aqueon quietflow 30 hang on filter was 10 seconds with no media. The topfin pro 30 was 8 and the 50 was 5.sumthing close to 6 no media. I nvr finished the math but feel free to do it, i was just trying to see who has the faster turn over. With media fully loaded the aueon shot up to 14 seconds and top fin wemt to 9 seconds. I always suspected they werent pulling their advertised weight. My 55 gal tank i had to use two aqueon 20s and 1 aqueon 30 quiet flows so i had 70 gals worth of fileter for 55 gal.tank and that seemed to just get by.... I love the topfin pro and the transparecy but odlly enough i introuduced carbon to my tank with this filter and i think the phostphates from the csrbon enabled distoms (brown dusty algea) to start growing. Nvr had a prob with cartiges with aqueon quiet flow tho. You could rinse the cartiges and then good as new. Whoops quick edit. The top fin pro has a built in skimmer which is pretty cool but is mor eof a gimmick. I didnt plug it and test the topfin filter.... so basically im loosing suction by having that skimmer outlet open. Thus the topfin may increase in speed. Is already superior as it is. I dont have surface trash in my tank so no skimmers are necesseray. They barely pull any water i tested with small napkin pieces. The grooves are too think to let anything thru anyways. Is def a gimmick. If you get top fin pro. Just plug your skimmer. If you have sand. Stuff the suction thing at the bottom (where you put the balck sponge) take it out and on the inside put the wite cotton filter rolled up and the black sponge on the outside so the snad doesnt break or damage your impeller. I tried putting some filter cotton my the impeller outlet which can be done but the pump wasnt able to scuk up water and it was hindering mobility. So definetly do w.e upgrade u want to the suction snout. Watever is called 😂 and stay away from carbon! Read up on it and see how it works. Dont use activated carbon cuz everyone has it in their filter, it can be more detrimental to you than you think
I've just gotten used to the fact that you need a filter that is "rated" for a tank smaller than what you actually have. I have the AquaClear 70 on a 55 gallon...and a canister filter that is rated for a 120 gallon tank. Sucks for new fishkeepers though.
yepp, hence why I run 2 AC110's each on my 75's lol... . Like you said, I step it up & then double up if I really want filtration. I'm on my way of phasing out HoBs for this reason.
The problem with filters in general is that they are always measured and listed by manufacturer at the pump head only. Any time there is a lift of water, which is happening with this and most filters as well then the gallons per hour are lowered. Can be a very misleading thing when reading the output listed on the box.
yeah they arent as accurate as the company claims. but i prefer the 70 to the 50 they work great. in your neck of the woods those r expensive. where im at the 50s new cost 38 and the 70s go for 50
This is why I'm happily running an: AquaClear 110/29 gal. long. 2x Tidal 110/55 gal. Sun Sun 704b/36 gal. bowfront Obviously, I much prefer leveling up my filters relative to my tank volume. Better to have too much flow than underwhelming results. Btw, I’ve used an AquaClear 30 on a 10 gal. qt for several years🤫. Since you have a wavemaker, that Fluval will work just fine. If not, upgrade to the 70 model.
I know this is an old video but when I was using one in my tank the bigger point was that the aqua clear had the most room in the filter and you were putting all your media in them. You could also put a little light on them because they were clear and grow chaeto. Heck put 2 on the back and sometimes your can throw a heater in there to keep it out of the main tank obviously it would have to be small enough to fit in the back of the filter but you get the point
Hi! Fast setting in the Fluval. Your uptake tube was only set on the middle flow section. When you swing the tube to the right it is on the fast flow. It says it in the directions. 😊
I wonder how much of a difference it would have made if the water level was to the top of the tank? The issue I have with my Aquaclear is that if the tank water level drops below the bottom of the U tube inside the filter it will lose prime if the power goes out. That tube doesn't go down very far. I think they tried to design it to not lose the siphon but it often doesn't work. I'll have to pour some water into the filter and switch it over to low flow to reprime it. Strange how it's able to clear the air out of the U-Tube better when it's on low flow. Getting it to reprime with a low water level and a filter on the end of the intake tube is a pain.
Well Fluval is crap in what they do, Over designed and crappy qualety, id say they are the most missleading of them all: Then i have never understood the use of HBO filters.
The Aquaclear, like many hang on backs, has a suction pump, if the water level in the tank is low then the gph will be less because the pump has to work against gravity to pull it up the tube, and their ratings, although maybe not fully accurate, are with a tank filled to the rim. Tidal and Whisper IQ hang on backs have the pump submersed in the aquarium and are more accurate with their ratings since pumps can push the water easier than they can pull it. I think you should always buy a little bigger than the manufacturers rating.

Viced Rhino agreed
Did you move the u tube to the left for more flow because
You could adjust the flow with more flow or less flow with the u tube of the filter

Brian The Disabled Aquarist that’s the problem

And i thought only canisters would run far from their published numbers. Seems like it applies to other filters as well
azirwan almost all of them
Great video!
Thanks

They have too much bypass in the filter and one of mine died on me lol.
Bigger is ALWAYS better. That's what she said anyways. 😅
🤣
