I wish marineland would have not discontinued the penguin 330 model… it had nice substantial baskets that you could put bio media in it, and the motors are still working today.. money wise id say its the best bang for the buck, and I’ve been using them since the late 70s

Nice review. Marineland HOBs have served me well over the year's. Have to say they don't compare next to the Seachem Tidal HOBs. Set them & forget them. Give them a good rinse with new floss every 6 weeks and takes less than 5 minutes to service. With the Marineland I was constantly adjusting flow & changing the media to keep it running.
I have 2 450's. They work great. Had them since about 2018 or 19. Brought them used. Had a 350 also years ago.

I love the flow but the bio wheels are useless. I also do not like the way the Chambers are set up. I prefer the Tidal set up where the water flows from bottom to top like a canister filter. To me you could load that bad boy up with sponge and have no worry of bypass.
I agree with almost everything you said. The one thing I’m surprised is that the bio wheels are useless. I figured they worked or they would have eliminated them on the new design. I have had issues with them going slower over time but according to marineland that is normal. I’ve never had one stop totally but I do rinse them out in tank water occasionally. Over all it’s a decent filter but I retired mine in favor of the Seachem tidal 110. I think that is the best HOB on the market. Only thing I would change is the skimmer needs an option to shut it off. I prefer the water being drawn from the bottom of the aquarium.
One of the BEST features of this filter is the dual prefilter designed for this specific filter. What a nice concept. Should permanently come with it.

I had a Marineland WAYYYYY back in the day. The bio wheels were always a hassle and I never felt they were a positive in any way except when I first bought it. Figured it was a miniature wet/dry mechanism. Quickly realized they are pretty much a gimmick and far too much hassle. I haven't had a Pro series with the motor in the tank. I was in the military with far too much moving around, so I got out of the hobby. I got back into the hobby about two years ago with the Tidal filters available and are my absolute go to. Have two running on 75 and 40 gallon aquariums with another getting ready for a 40 gallon marine aquarium setting up next month. And the thing about the lid not sitting flush would absolutely drive me nuts!!

@@mammyCsend it back and go get an Aquaclear 110. They are amazing and fit a 75g no problem. I had the tidal 110 on mine for a while, and ended up getting rid of it and going Aquaclear. It's a much better filter.

@@MicklowFilms didn't know America was in China. My Marineland filter says in big proud writing, "MADE IN CHINA". So, keep telling yourself your patriotic and buying the same "foreign" stuff as everyone else, I will buy a GOOD filter...

Gotta love the durable filters. They all work the same. I just want biggest compartment for media. I just hope the durability of filters do not diminish in the future so these companies can be more profitable.
A problem I experienced was that the 375 did not fit over the lip of my 75g tank. The old 350s do, but the new 375s don't. I'm not sure why. I also don't like that the intake tube spins. It's a minor issue, but I don't like it.

I add sponge or ceramic media to the bottum of the filter. After that the bio wheel was not a problem . That worked on the penguin and pro
At 10:20 you mention the intake basket. My beef with it is that it is 2 separate pieces. If you want to fill the inside of it with pre-filter media it is almost impossible to snap it back together. I would advise as you have to do away with it altogether and install a sponge pre filter instead.

Ive been running 2 of the 450 pros on a 55 for the last 2 years. Recently i down sized to just one 450 pro. The extra filter didnt make any noticeable change at all. The one great benefit the marineland has over the other big name filters is the extra cartridges that come with it and u can use whatever media u want. U can create a very good micron filter cartridge by sandwiching a micron filter pad inside it. I use bonded quilt batting that u can get dirt cheap. So i have 1 intake sponge inside the tank and then another intake sponge inside the filter where the intake pumps water into it and then i run the cartridge pads that u have to buy monthlyone on each side but u dont have to. I do because i prefer to use the filter the way it was designed to be used. Then i load the custom cartriges behind those filled with the ceramic rings and the quilt batting sandwiched in between the covers. Then the bio wheels. The micron filter pad or the quilt batting makes all the difference turning an ok filter into one of the best hobs on the market. Yeah u have to buy cartriges but come on now 8 bucks for 2 cartriges lasts a couple months. Its not that expensive. Once u get one of these filters dialed in and u take care of it once a week i think anyone would be fully satisfied with the performance. There was a lot of trial and err because of the different options available for setting up the filter. Im totally happy with it and will use more of them in the future.
they could get rid of the wheels and give 2 options in the box for the intake tube, the one that's shown and then one like you mentioned..😊
Yeah, I had the previous version of these filters, but as soon as they went with the square tube I bounced.
Love how spacious the chambers are for the 450. However, I have started to noticed more water running/ rushing over the motor rather than through the filter section of the unit than usual.
I’ve got a Emperor 400 that is an absolute workhorse. The filter was old when I picked it up used from my old LFS, probably 15 years ago. Still works Great 👍 too!
I have a few of the old Penguin filters that were solid!
I have a 400 as well, been running for years. I removed the wheels and redirected the spray bar flow to all go through 2 clamshell media holders I fill with floss. It's just for mechanical filtration and surface churning because I have massive bio media in a canister filter besides. The 400 actually starts up quite well only making that god awful noise for about 8 seconds before going silent.
I got an emperor 400. Works great on my 75. Only had it for 3 mths but I'm drooling over idea of trying a seachem tidal 110
Hi Jason I’m a subscriber to your channel and have found your videos to be very helpful , I’ve noticed that the hang on back filters do seem to be very popular in the states and have decided this is what I would also like to have , as here in the Uk we tend to have external canister filters . I’ve been looking at the seachem 55 or 75 please can you tel me if you have these in your fish room or have done any video reviews on the seachems hang on the backs

On my tanks I have all tidal filters. The only thing I wish is the suction was better and on the 110s the tube was longer. Great filters I hate buying cartridges they are a waste of money and companies like them as a constant source of revenue
I’ve had a few of the older versions and they lasted years. Except.. of course the wheels. I don’t know if I’d appreciate having the motor up front.
I have two of the Marineland Pro 275's. I didn't even bother putting the bio wheels on, just left them off. My one complaint is the size of the filter. I couldn't go any larger than a 275 due to the center brace on my tank. You really have to pay attention to the measurements or it will be too wide.
I used the older Emperor 400 filters for many years, and they were equipped with a spraybar which helped make sure that the bio-wheels never stopped turning. The "Pro" series should have kept the spraybar.
To keep Bio-Wheels moving,put an object like a few napkins,a square sponge, or anything similar between the back glass and the back of the filter which tilts the filter forward a bit and creates more flow......solves the problem completely.
Thank me later, as it drove me nuts until I did this.
I have a Marineland 450 and a Seachem Tidel 110. Although the Seachem has great internal space, the Seahem is sooooo much louder.

Finally got rid of mine, was bulky, noisy, filter media had to be changed too often, wasn't aerating the water enough unless the water falls off the ramp but that increases noise even more, regular screen makes water back flow once the filter media in the back is even slightly restrictive to the outflow, if you use the sponge pre-filter to restrict the flow, it will clog quickly because of the high flow rate of the pump will suck food into it before fish can eat it.
My penguin pro 275 is the loudest filter I have, by far. It's also the worst for filtration. It bypasses more than it should, even with brand new filters or reusable filter sponges. There just isn't enough bio media either. Everyone always claims how much better the pump in the tank is, and how the pumps on say the aquaclear don't "self prime" after a power outage, but both my aquaclears can have power cut off, and sit for an extended period, power back up and run fine. I would 100% choose an Aquaclear over the marineland ANY day. The penguin pro was the first filter I grabbed when getting back into the hobby this year, and I wish I wouldn't of wasted my money, it now sits in the tank stand not getting used. It also doesn't have any adjustments for getting the filter leveled on different tanks. So much happier with Aquaclear.
I used to love the old super king filters
I have the 20, it’s pretty decent but I don’t like how the water flows through it. I like the bottom to top filtration of the aqua clear and the tidal. I’d get a tidal again for my large tank but I don’t like how cramped the basket is.
Waiting for there to be an aquaclear with a self priming pump.

For me it’s the bulkyness of the marineland filter. I use the tidel filters for me it’s a cleaner look

I have used Marineland filters forever. I have tried others but I always go back to Marineland. The one issue for me, is the motor housing the impeller. I have had some rowdy fish that knocked off the cover of the impeller. It is very hard to snap back into place and I usually end up taking the whole unit out of the water.

I've been working in a small petstore for 2 years now. Do you sometimes have to smack any of your dieter to get them to spin again after a power short? I find it a pretty odd chore but it's so fun to dom

Completely agree... the bio-wheel is a waste of everybody's time and money... especially Marineland's. It is an extra production cost that doesn't do anything, except cause trouble. They should do away with the square intake rigging which was also just a nuisance. It is generally a solid filter, but the wheels and square tubes... too much gimmickry for me. I went with Aqua-Clears on my newest tank set up... didn't want the hassle of plugging all the excess holes necessary to make a Sea Chem Tidal work right. Thanks.

@@HalifaxCollect Tidal filters pull water from your tank 3 ways... the obvious path through the intake pipe, but also through a set of vents where the pipe connects to the rest if the filter, plus 3rd, the skimmer vents at the water line. It is often referred to as the Tidal bypass problem because the water always takes the path of least resistance, therefore if you use an intake filter sponge at the bottom of the intake tube, more water will flow through the other inlets and bypass that part of your filter. There are a number of other bypass issues with this filter as well and quite a few YT videos addressing this subject. Thanks.

I don't run canisters because I hate taking care of them, but if I were to run canisters I would probably go with the FX4 or FX6.
I’ve used all three major hobs I know the marine land says it’s self priming but that has never worked in my experience the only one that does is the tidal but I don’t really like that once cause my fish always get stuck behind the intake arm my favorite has probably been the aqua clears I just don’t like that it is grey and not black
That's weird - the self-priming feature has never failed us (we have three of them right now).
I don't like the square shape of the filter pre strainer because it is difficult to find a pre filter sponge to fit over it.
Will this filter work on a Aqueon 60 breeder? I am looking for one other then the Aqueon quietflow 75 which does not fit this tank I do not want the motor on the outside of the tank. Thanks for any help

I live in Plainfield, IL with well water. I'd like to set up a 90 gallon but at my age (63), I don't want to lug buckets from my basement RO filter. My water is 400ppm GH and 180 KH 7.7PH. I'd like to keep a community tank with angels, tetras and some plants. Can I use my water softened water (GH 90, KH 180)? I've seen research both ways but I figured you might have experience since you're in the area. I can mix both soft and well water and maybe get 150GH pretty easy. I thought I'd first try angels and plants and if the plants fail, just angels and the fall back would be Cichlids. Is this really doable or should I save myself a lot of money and just go Cichlids?

I have the penguin pro 125 through my infinite wisdom trying to hack the filter I have a considerable amount of bypass that I'm okay with that. I noticed with the bypass water dripping on the motor through wicking or capillary action the power cord drips out of the tank to the floor, yes have a drip loop but it's dripping a lot of water on the floor. I fixed the solution by pushing the cable all the way up and putting some silicone before the cord makes a turn out of the tank. I also dislike those bio Wheels, always stop spinning and if I put sponges I have to "HACK" FILTER INSERT frame to be like a barrier for the sponge won't rub on the bio Wheels. I FEEL IT HOLDS LESS MEDIA AND ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION THAN THE AQUA CLEAR. I I miss the filter that I used to have as a child I believe it was a DANNER product called the SUPREME( not the aqua King with that giant motor )but it did have a big motor but and I can't find the picture online also IT had a very spacious area for media and sponges and but it was always a pain to get the suction got to do some macgyvering to get the intake tubes to start.

the motor creates heat which transfers to the water. I like the old one better, just keep your tank full, I never had an issue with it reprising from a power outage.
🤔 What is the difference between the filter cartridge and the Bio wheel ? Does a Bio wheel really help out with the benificial bacteria or is it just there for a little extra something something ?🤔 Just wondering cause I bought a 150 and it works great but it does stop sometimes. 😐
The wheel isn’t necessary. If it stops it doesn’t matter.

I don't prefer the pro series because of problems with the motor fitting on the housing. Never ran smoothly
Ever since AquaClear changed the name of the product from 500 to the 110 the plastic thickness is significantly and I mean significantly cheaper quality than the older version that I still have many in use. Overall same performance but much thinner Plastics including the tubes!🤔🙄😇

I used to use Marineland Bio-wheel Penguine filters exclusively. I picked up one of these 6 months ago the 125 Pro for a 20 gallon setup. The pump in the water seemed like a great idea, no priming, except that the pump intermittently refuses to start after being plugged back in following bi-weekly cleanings. This is not a minor fluke either, it legitimately will not come on 50% of the time. Smacking it doesn't help, tanking the pump off and cleaning the impeller has no effect on it, priming the filter with water has no effect, its like some wiring inside is just janky. The only solution is to repeatedly plug and unplug it, sometimes for 5 mins straight, sometimes it still won't start. Huge disappointment because in all other aspects, this filter is a big step up from the old penguin, prefilter, media basket for extra media and a hinged lid that works great, adjustable flow control. This filter should rock but sucks because its unreliable. It has never stopped once started, it just doesn't like to start. I ended up retrieving my old Penguin of the same size from my parents house on a visit, swapped my wheel in and haven't had a problem since. My old Penguin ran for close to 10 years and sat in a garage for another 10. It still starts and runs strong.

I wasn't too impressed, constant issues with the biowheels, never seemed to really filter effectively and would clog up quickly. Also ran the optional "polishing" cartridge and that didn't do much if anything. Was severely disappointed in the unit. Ended up getting a penn plax cascade and that has solved 95% of my filtering issues
One bad is the 125 for up to 20 gal is way too big for a 10 gal. 😂
At least the flow is adjustable though. Haha
sachem clogs the fastest, very small mechanical sponge .
Hate hobs. I have this and other models. got a penn plax cascade, and i wont go back. And its one of the cheaper canister filters.
If you need that big of a filtration hob just get the canister
I'm the opposite - I hate canister filters because they are a pain to maintain compared to HOB.
In my experience canisters are too hard to clean so people don't clean them often enough.
I trust your input more than mine just throwing a suggestion, I haven't had a dead fish in like 3 years so maybe somethings working lol
The right medium I think makes the biggest difference and you could probably do the same with both. Canister does have more volume though

Eh 3/10. It's Marineland- its overpriced cheap junk when you don't have the money for a better filter. The build quality, the cheapness of the plastic, things don't fit together right, don't seal or just break within a certain amount of time forcing you to buy another filter.... which if you spent the money the first time you'll spend even more of it the second time replacing the filter. Biowheels are a complete gimmick, like mentioned they usually stop within a few weeks (if they even do spin at all), tear easily and usually aren't stocked in store anymore for a quick (also expensive and unnecessary) replacement. Running hot is common with these motors, I've had them warp the plastic just being in the tank running normally. The intakes are thin and weak, I've accidentally cracked or broken a chunk out of them in the past. Always keep your broken filters for replacement parts if you run multiples of the same filter throughout your room and can't wait a week for hard to find parts off the internet. The only benefits filters like these and the tidal have is the self priming feature, something aquaclear needs to adapt to their filters. That skimmer feature on the newer units now have like on the tidal clogs easily and should be eliminated. It's still a half step up from the walmart nonsense though.
I've never had any trouble with any of my Marineland filters, neither the HOBs or canisters
I have them and they are flimsy and just made cheap I have a bunch of seachem tidals way better
