I have this filter on my 75 gal. turtle aquarium. I have one 5-3/4" RES turtle who is not fully grown.
I love this filter. I hate that it's so hard to get the bottom of the motor housing on. I'm 77 years old and I don't have the strength I used to. I finally used a hammer and got it on, but am afraid I may break it.
I called Marineland about this and they sent me the whole motor part. But the problem is still there. My turtle tries to use the bottom of the intake for a back scratcher and is constantly knocking the bottom of the motor housing off. I do really appreciate Marineland helping me.
My final solution is I have to use a hammer to get the motor housing on and I use a rubber band to keep it on so when my turtle is bothering it, it still stays on.
I have this filter and 2 sponge filters. My tank stays crystal clear. I probably dont need the sponge filters, but i will handle that later.
Turtles are real messy and all the turtle gurus say you must have a canister filter. I am perfectly happy with this filtration system. I just couldn't bring myself to spend so much money for a canister filter. Besides, the canisters are so heavy, I would have trouble moving it to clean it.
I bet your really bored by now. So thanks for listening.
Sincerely,
Linda Harper

I love your DIY tips to make HOB filter better! Thank you for sharing. ☺
Thanks for watching!
I love this filter......I really hope to get one some day......The features are so awesome. Ive always loved Marineland products back in the day
Did you enter the contest?
I need a 450!!! cant wait till they are available, will certainly use your link, great videos on it.
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing about using the AC 500 foam insert as a pre-filter for the Marinelands. I've been wrapping my trapezoidal plastic intake screen for my Penguin 350 with Poly-Fil and this option is much easier maintenance-wise.
Glad it was helpful!
Royally great diy video! I grabbed the next size down emperor filter when they had that sale but haven’t set it up yet so this was very timely!
Just chili dip with cheddar cheese and a 7up, but all I’ve been thinking about all day is Chicken Wings! Lol! Ever had Tebasaki wings? Also known as Nagoya style wings. Omg, game changer! Love the new channel!💖
Of course I have! Lol
Google Yama-Chan wings.....another favorite of mine!
I will film a wings video very very soon and release it maybe by the end of the year.
Another great informative video for us fish hobbyists. Btw when you was talking about the chips for the filter bags and trying to find the word to use ... I’m hollering at my iPad...RECHARGE MICHEAL. You must have heard me because you finally said it. Lol. Keep up the great videos on helping us fish hobbyists on how to stretch our dollar and in turn giving our fishy friends the best fish condo for a healthy and thriving environment.
LOL.....BRAIN FART!
love how you have coined the "Grab a snack and a beverage" line. lol good stuff. i am having a carne asado hard shell taco and a sprite zero with some music.
Sounds delish! Homemade taco’s?
I just want to thank u I just started my auto change got all the drains done tomorrow I will get the water ran if it wasn’t for ur channel I would of never been able to do it
Nice! Hope it all works out!
Loved it your explanation clearer than the filter work
Thanks!
I'm a big fan of pinky filter floss. Great stuff
Twins!
@@MichaelsFishRoom I use it in the majority of my hobs but I've considered switching to sponge. Any thoughts? The pinky floss does a great job but the idea that sponge basically last forever is slightly appealing.
I use the white floss roll.
Ruff on one side and soft on the other.
I cut two pieces and fill with carbon and ammonia neutralizer.
I staple the sides together.
The inner part of the floss I roll up and staple the sides and put it over the part of the filter that pulls in the water the intake .
Like a home made sponge over the area that the water is pulling in the intake tube .
I first did it to protect my baby fish .
I change it every two weeks and the home made filters pads I change monthly even though its not too dirty. Just to keep my tank clean.
I need to get a new filter. Have a Aqueon now and its so loud it drives me crazy. When I shut off to allow fish to eat the thing never starts again unless I pull the motor off and put it back on. Its not dirty eaither.
Anyway great video...
I love your outtakes. 😁🤣
Thanks!
Where do you get the white stuff?
Love those bloopers. My brain gets gassy all the time!!
Lol....they are really my favorite part!
Happy water change Wednesday sir! Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching!
Pinky filter floss is the bomb. I've been using it for a couple of years.
Yeah, I forget where I heard if it, but it’s good stuff!
i like watching you, very informative a real!
Thanks Matt.
Good to know! Love your info!!
Thanks! Was it easy to follow.
Yes!!
Omg! You have a cooking channel too?? Two things I watch on CZcams are aquariums and cooking! Definitely gonna check it out!!!
Make sure to subscribe and comment on a video!
I loved this video thanku so much. When i watched i was hoping you would show how to take the impeller out for cleaning or is that 1 solid unit connected to the motor? I tried to take my impeller out but it would not budge and i was afraid to pull to hard and break the motor.
TBH, I don't remember.....I think it came out pretty easy.
Great video. Just made a modified garlic bread roll for a meatball sandwich. My daughter is loving the guppies and she just noticed today our third drop of guppy fry in the mutt guppy tank. I'm gonna have to get a bigger tank. Lol
Nice! Is it weird I read that in Quinn’s voice?
Just made my 1st diy box filter today...now to set up some more fry tanks. :)
Sponge filter for fry tanks!

Thank you so much for the hacks I just bought this filter I'm going to try some of these what does the K2 actually do then
K2 is biological filtration. After more testing, I DO NOT recommend this filter.
Great DIY!
Thanks Mike!
Great video! I’m cheap too! Lol no snack had a long day and having a Gin and soda water! Cooked the chicken Parmesan with a twist of my bread crumbs ( can’t have bread 😡) but it was amazing! My Family loved it so crispy😊 thanks so much! I love those sponges that’s what I use, just wish they came in black
Tell me about your bread crumbs? Sorry you had a bad day!
Michael's Fish Room it really wasn’t super bad, I have had my own Daycare for 29 years, crazy weather so we couldn’t go out side😬, I’m doing a lazy/ Dirty Keto diet which has been great! 33 lbs pounds down since May, so no bread, my substitute for bread crumbs is Pork skins, which a lot of people don’t like them but in recipes they add a great flavor! I love them and when craving a chip it’s my go too! Love your videos!
Been subscribed for a few months now, love your content. You're honest about reviews, you seem like a real down to earth guy. I have not really run a CZcams channel in a few years now, but I want to start a new channel aimed at showing off what it's like to keep freshwater fish in college (there's honestly not a ton of college age fishkeepers, especially not a ton who do CZcams videos.. I hope to change that and encourage more people to get into the hobby, even while in college!) Do you have any tips?
Thanks for the kind words, but I’m just an asshole with a camera....lol
Tips for production or content?
@@MichaelsFishRoom emmm both? Haha, But mostly content. I know I'm going to do a video about rescaping my tank, which I'll be filming pretty soon. (Hopefully today if Amazon gets its shit together and delivers my packages)

I actually really like this design I think it's very similar to the aquaclear 110 when it comes to customisation.

Aquar clear filter are great for sponges. I use them on my power heads that I run to polish the water
Nice! How often do you clean them?
Clean about 2weeks . When I see my poly film starts turn brown . I have MT dew bottle that I have placed on bottom of my power head. With bottom cut off pack full of polyfilm then place sponge on bottom to catch the big stuff and have Bacteria to grow
Thanks!
Welcome!
Your videos are great first a little knowledge then some comedy with the bloopers.
Which are really the best part!
I was impressed with today's video. I will be purchasing one soon. I will be trying your bacon . I always get it to done for my husband, this might do the trick. By the way I am still having trouble with my tanks turning cloudy or green, do you have a solution.

I have a marineland penguin bio wheel 100 filter and the wheel don’t spin any cheep DIY ideas?
Yeah take it out and make sure it spins freely. then make sure there is enough flow.
where this friend filter is manufactured. thanks
My guess, China.
Awesome DIY hacks! Aquaclear sponges are the shiznit! I have extra aquaclear sponges around just for this reason. Also all 3 of your recipes are delicious. Take the word of a fellow fat guy foodie lol.

There are complaints that the new 450 will not fit properly on large marineland tanks. Once installed the glass lid hits the filter front. I have a marineland 60 long salt water tank and will try installing the 450 tomorrow.
It fits on my 55, but the lid does not anymore.
Is pink filter material better then blue filter material? I just bought 20 feet of blue. How to attach it? Zip ties? Rubber bands?
Depends on if you identify as a boy or a girl.
Hi micheal I like what you did to the filter. I would use cermaric rings in the basket. I might buy that aqua filter to put it on my hob filter for my 30 gal. 1 question is that filter corse.
Filter?
Michael's Fish Room yes
Snack is steak tips left from supper last night beverage is coffee! Garlic bread with toasted sesame seeds...why have I not thought of that before?! My whole filtration is DIY lol I get alot of satisfaction out of making my own projects work. Thankfuly it's not one of my fails.
Sounds like a good snack with a drink that does not match!
Try the Garlic Bread, it is AMAZEBALLS!
I have a Penguin Pro 275 but having issues with after 4 days of installing I noticed the Bio wheel is not turning anymore. I know I know a normal issue with Marineland filters BUT my issue is due to the water flow. After 4 days of filtering my standard C size filter seems to be clogged(even though the tank does not even seem to be dirty at all before and after the install. But the issue is the water can not go through the filter fast enough and in turn going over the overflow on the intake side so water flow if not enough to turn the bio wheel. I cannot replace these filter cartridges every 4 days so I need to figure out how to resolve this. I was thinking to get the micron filter to put where the filter basket is but I have seen reviews that these clog up very quickly as well. This filter will be of no use if the water is just going over the overflow and not through the filter media yes some goes through and filters but the bio-wheel is being affected by this and I would rather all water filter not just some. Does anyone have any ideas about what I could do to resolve this other than getting a different type of filter?
Are you sure it is installed correctly to get maximum flow?
Michael please can you tell me i have guppy fry some are dark black others are a light yellowish is this how you tell male from females because i have 5 of them yellowish and thirty dark blackish colour.
Color is one why, shape of the body and anal fin is another.
What’s the piece this guy is holding to with all the slots in it.. that the algae’s growing off of?? It’s being used as kinda a filter at least what he’s using it like.. my marineland 375 didn’t come with this piece on it? Where would I put the mesh bags I filled with ammonia reducing resin at in mine?
Shouldn't need ammonia resin if the tank is cycled. Are you talking about the sponge?
nice , i had one but had to return .It was way too big lol.
A 450? They make smaller sizes!
I'm sick of buying filters so any ideas and tweaking to save $ is fabulous! Happy Wednesday!
Happy Hump day!
I made a package of bacon today... no one else was home... it’s all gone... making ham and potato salad for dinner...
I’m eagerly awaiting to see you play with the internal filter.
That sounds so creepy......lol
Just plain bacon or on a sandwich?
Michael's Fish Room one sandwich... and lots of walking by and having a nibble. It’s all your fault!
Chili Homemade of course. Subject for Michaels eats? Orange soda
Possibly! Beans?
Beans for sure!
aquarium co op sells prefilters that work and are fairly cheap.
I know.
upset stomach so no snack n a beverage today...but I'm still in here witcha!!!
Feel better!
I have the same filter but I have water coming down where the pump connects to the filter. Is that fine?
No
@@MichaelsFishRoom I figured that much lol
Where do you get your K2 biomedia? Do you use it instead of or along with Lava rock?
I don’t use it anymore. You really need a lot and it takes a while to be come established I feel.
I used to get it on Amazon, still have most of mine!
@@MichaelsFishRoom DSWDARRIUS also a Jersey aquarist mentioned it. He also has some black balls he said he got from ?Ebay? for a lotta money.
One thing I don’t understand is the placement of the media basket. From everything I read, any biological media such as ceramic rings or the K2 media should be placed after mechanical filtration, but this basket is before the mechanical filtration which would make it difficult for beneficial bacteria to grow on whatever biological media is put in that basket. Is this correct or do I have it mixed up and if right, do you know why they would do this?
You want it after so it stays cleaner. BB will still grow.

I have a question that I couldn’t answer for someone, I clean all my sponge in buckets of tank water, but the guy I was talking to uses tap water, my question is, shouldn’t he dechlor that water before cleaning a cycled sponge? Great video by the way.
Yup...unless he does not have chlorine or chloramine in the water because it is from a well.

Michael, I have 1 - 20 gal. with about 100 female adult guppy's and 30 Mystery Snails, and 2 adult cory's.. I have a sponge filer and a Top Fin HOB. Lately I have been cleaning the HOB 1 to 2 times a week and the sponge filter about every 2 months, I have been changing water 1 to 2 times a week due to the cloudy water. I also have 2 - 5 gal. tanks. One has 2 corys, 5 Platis? 10 snails ans a few guppy frys, the filter is an Aqua Tech 5-15, this one is the green problem. The other 5 gall. has a Aqua Tech 5-15, 1 Panda Cory, 30 guppy fry and 4 adult guppies. Up untill recently I had no problems with the water conditions.
The 20 is WAY overstocked. But, If the fish are healthy I’d leave it.
How much water do you chan at a time?
I try to stick with half or less.

New filter means new tank?
For me?
And actually like to see them do a filter sock like salt water systems, they’re incredibly easy to change, even easier than floss. I like using technology over laboring.
Also water changes are on Saturday not Wednesday. 😂😂
Where do you want the filter sock?
Water change Saturday just does not have a good ring to it.
Michael's Fish Room The filter sock would go down in that little cone basket thing where you were talking about putting the K2 media. That way you could just fill the rest of the filter with bio media and just change that sock out for mechanical filtration, if you ever needed chemical filtration you could just throw that in the sock too and throw it away with all the other junk they get stuck in there when it’s done.
Didn’t I talk about that I’m the video?
Michael's Fish Room I don’t remember a filter sock option. Floss and bio media. Not sure if the make filter socks that size. 🤔
Nice!

Fish and food is awesome...alright alright
Alright!
Lol. I did have the chicken parmesan with garlic bread tonight. I made two pieces of it yesterday and had the second one today, Ashley sent you a picture to your website. 😂😂😂. I’m gonna blame you for making me fat. I’ve been fat for years but I still blame you.
Anything specific about the pink, I have something pretty much like it the blue and white, is there a difference?
What I always do with new tanks and a power filter is a cut those cartridges open a little bit and I put ammo-carb in there, it absorbs ammonia, then I put some kind of biological media in the filter whether it be foam or something like a seachem matrix (pretty much the best you can buy) or lava rock, and that absorbs the ammonia and neutralizes it so you can add fish right away in a new tank and it takes about a month to wear out, I usually add a little more after about three weeks and before I have to throw away the cartridge the tank is usually cycled. The ammonia-carb just takes care of it For a while as your bacteria grows in. As long as you don’t go too crazy with the fish that’s been a pretty successful method, I’m guessing that ammonia resin is pretty close to the same thing. I’m kind of like you, I don’t really do the carbon thing, Not in less I’m doing Oscars were red tails or something huge that poops a ton, but that ammonia resin or animal carb is good in a new tank until it’s fully cycled.
On another note, with the fluidized removing biology that cleans itself, you need a ton of that stuff for it to make a difference, for a 75 gallon tank where your flower horn is you would probably need a 2 to 4 gallon size bucket full of that media. I think ceramics or some lotta rocks would probably be better as a biological option, I would go for filter floss so I could just pop that out and throw it away to clean the filter and leave the rest biological, then I would go eat more chicken Parmesan.
lol...blame me because you fat, it’s ok!
I know about the the k2, but that is not the primary source of BB, it’s kinda like a helper amount!
I think the blue and pink are pretty much the same, but pink is always better😜
Michael's Fish Room 😂😂. Ewww. Did I buy gay filter media. 😂😂😂
