Aquarium Co-Op do you know how I could disinfect pond plants
Why do they keep making these cartriges if no one wants to use them? And why not use the cartriges?
What if I got the 110 Aqua Clear Fluval?
I'm very interested in this product. Do you worry about fine particles at all being it is a coarse sponge or is it just not a big deal?
Cory is responsible for all of my fish not dying.
He gave you the info but you did it. Your tank is your accomplishment.
amen cory.
Me too!!!

As someone whos local fish store is an hour and a half away, I really appreciate the demonstration on the walmart filter. Thanks so much!
Same here!
My filter quit & I ran to walmart & grabbed a 5-15 hang on back just to get through holiday. That was 2 1/2 years ago... running strong, $11.00. I leave if on a an extra in case I want to set up a quick pre cycled tank for an unplanned fish purchase. đ
Sometimes when I'm showing filters to new hobbyists they're scared to mess with their filter by customizing it, while others think it's too much work or research and prefer to go with the "easier" cartridge and whatever else the filter comes with. Most new hobbyists have never heard of beneficial bacteria in aquariums, the nitrogen cycle, or knew that filters could be customized in the first place. I understand the desire for some to go by the book or the manufacturer's recommendations (even though a lot of the time they make no sense, i.e. replacing media every x months which can crash your newly cycled tank), but I also think the fear of doing something wrong stems from lack of education on how filters work, why they're a good thing to have in your tank, what should and should not go in them, etc. Thanks for taking the time to teach us something new with these videos!
Nice work! It has a very âunbox therapyâ feel to it. Production quality is getting top notch guys
Just wanted to say THANKS!! I would like to say I am new ti fish keeping, but that would be a lie, I have kept fish twice before in my youth and failed terribly. Now I would say I am new to fish keeping correctly, and your videos have been critical in helping me do that. Thank You!!!
Hows it going a year later?
@@VinylUnboxings still looking good
@@jhodges405 That's nice. My first fish died last night so I think I may be quitting too, but hopefully I can get excited about it later again like you did
@@VinylUnboxings donât quit because one fish died, itâs sad but find out why it died by testing your water or examining the fish. Also donât forget some fish are just genetically weak due to overbreeding. Donât give up, thatâs what I almost did and a few years on I now breed fish and shrimp for local shops! Oh and keep it kurupt
@@ljaerialvideography2805 Thanks homie. I was mad discouraged tbh but I got back into it and now I have like 3 tanks going
I just made my first âhot rodâ filter! So excited to try different set ups like the ones youâve shown here. I never knew there was more than just expensive cartridges. Thanks Cory!
Just want to say this video was so helpful. I also bought all my products from aquarium co-op and they came so quickly and they were such high quality. I'm setting up a new betta tank and I know my fishies will be so happy with this filter. Thanks Cory for teaching me how to set it up!
Love this!I was convinced at the beginning of my fishtank life that cannisters were the only way to truly get suitable water. Love all the information!
Cory, I really enjoy your channel! I appreciate how you explain the why's and demonstrate the how's to maximizing performance of the products and the enjoyment of the hobby!
I use a bit of elastic to keep my sponge filter on my intake. (thin pony tail elastic, or thin elastic by the yard, cut and tied to fit adequately, and still remove and install the prefilter easily enough. LOVE the sponge intake filter! Easy to clean (easy to see that it NEEDS cleaned) and keeps a ton of gunk out of my filtration system. Thanks for teaching us this stuff Cory!!!
Ordered two! Use one to hot rod back hang on back and keep the other on hand for WHATEVER comes up! Love them!
I just bought this course sponge and optimized my filtration. it's been great so far. :)
Thank you Cory
Thank you Cory! I just ordered 2 of the coarse sponge pads and am super excited to optimize my two Aquaclear 70s! I recently bought foam from a craft store but it's been an epic failure. It's way too dense and my filter baskets are constantly being pushed up and now I'm worried about running the motors dead haha. I'm sure they're fine but I've had the filters 2.5 years now so I don't want to take my chances. I use your large pre filters on the intake tubes and they've been an AMAZING addition. For the life of me I don't know why I didn't just buy your coarse sponge pad from the get go!
I really appreciate the things you share with us Gold Fish is my Hobby and being on a fixed income was making it very difficult to continue and those filters in Walmart and the Petshops is getting more expensive and with your technique I can CONTINUE being in the Hobby so again THANKS and MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!đ
Started with your DIY 5 gallon bucket system, then saw this and you just changed my game forever. I run a cichlid and catfish tank 40 gallon breeder(for now) with two aqua clear systems (70 and 110) and I see these sponges cut to fit at my local petco and it crossed my mind about using them with existing filter systems, but you just confirmed it for me!
I've recently gotten into this hobby and I'm still learning I did order the sponges for the intakes for all my tanks I went and bought sponges from my local pet store and I also put ceramic rings into all my filters , I watched a video where you put sponges and rings in the filter I thought that's a great idea thank you so much for showing this stuff
Wow!!!!!! You just blew my freaking mind. Thank you for sharing this. I've been buying 16 pads a month for my two 55 gallon aquariums
Corey always makes the video I need when I need it it's scary. Just ordered sponges yesterday and now I know how to place them in my "Walmart filter". Thanks for the information Corey keep up the good work.
Wish I would have known this before I bought those stupid replacement filters! Thanks for making the video, you ROCK!
But do you need the carbon???
@@reneap9049 no only useful to get rid of any medicine or chemicals used in the fishtank
@@aarongonzalez4458 That's great to hear! I use Tetra Aqua Safe to dechlorinate the water, would that be considered a chemical that needs to be removed from the water?
This was very helpful. I'm going to do this for my 75 gal aqueoun filter and also add an sponge/foam in the intake valve. Thanks for this video
I am so glad you posted this video! I have a Topfin 10 gallon aquarium and can't keep up with the bio load of my fish. I'm having to replace the the disposable filters every two weeks instead of once a month. I'm going to get the sponge pads and pre-filter sponge, you've convinced me that those would be so much better and a lot less stress, lol
Nice video!
Been hotrodding filters for 25 years... could never go back to stock.
I like to remove stuff from the system as quickly and often as possible, so I use denser sponges.
Word up man have been tricking out my filters since the beginning. Great video glad someone said something!!!!
This is THEE most helpful channel on youtube. Thank you for the tips!!!
love using the re usable pads i use the coarse on the inside and then use a more fine one on the intake. kinda as a clean that 2 or 3 times and get them fine particles out. then clean the inside ones during the 4th cleaning of the intake. love how your getting this info out there so folks can save money and spend more on the fish, along with helping the environment by creating less waste since they are super re usable
My Aquaclear filter was delivered today from aquarium coop! Good timing for this video :-)
Love this setup for AquaClear filters!
Just spent a bunch of $$ on ur site
Iâm speechless. Iâm learning so much from these videos!!! Thanks a million
All great ideas and they work for the long run!
Thanks so much for all the great tips you really know your stuff when it comes to fish and aquariums. Looking forward to making my filter as efficient as possible.
Such a great video! Very helpful and insightful! Thank you!!
You give The Best 411! I can't wait to start buying my aquarium needs from your store!
Thank you! I have been looking for a vid like this. I was wondering about my 10 gallon filter and this did it! Thank you!
Just ordered everything you mentioned in this video. Thanks for all the great tips for hot rodding a filter.
Cool! Just before watching this I just happened to buy a prefilter sponge(some plants too) from your site, glad to see it used in the video on the filter that I have.
Thank you! This vid is very helpful for me.
So much great information thanks Aquarium co-op đđŒ
Works well!
Had some issues with the cheap top fin dual cartridges then did round sponge on intake and 1 course sponge in HOB with filter floss in front of it and everything good now. Waiting a month then I'll replace last carbon cartridge with the foam sponge
Thanks for the tips
Just ordered thank you Cory for your great information
Awesome, thank you for sharing!
Bro thank you so much for taking the time..really appreciate the tips...
Thank you! Found the info VERY informative. Use to have a 20g tank way back..over 2 decades ago. Got good at keeping mollies and a couple of spotted or Cory cats. Fast forward, my 8yo saw old pics of dad and his tank, so here I..we go again. Started with a 3g, up to 5g, now at a 10g. Mind you, NONE of the filter systems are compatible, so there are boxes of unusable filters.. Anyway, I am having to learn everything all over again. I remember just enough to be dangerous to the fish. Thanks again for the filtration lesson!
Hai Cory keep on going by making good videos like this
Fan from India
Thanks Cory for another practical video with useful advice.
Thank you I have one of those filters and you showed me a great idea
Almost the same setup I run on my Aquaclear 50. Ditched the sponge and carbon, put a course sponge on the bottom, then 2" of cotton batting, and the media bag on top. Works great, the cotton batting really polishes the water clean. Every month clean the sponge and replace the cotton batting.
I added leftover polyester batting (I'm a crafter) to my Marineland BioWheel and was amazed at how much it captured. Just throw it away, no rinsing.
@@casualcrafter2340 do you add the sponge at the bottom and then the poly on top? Or do you not use any sponge at all?
@@poochiebar I layer them vertically
Thank you Cory.
Perfect video thank you
Thanks for the ideas
Thank you. I have taken your advice. I appreciate it.
Nice job man! Thanks for the info.
SWEEEEET INFO SIR ..thank u for your time
With my marineland hang on the backs I put filter floss in the cages and use a finer sponge first to maximize the surface area. I also added some sponge inside the square cage at the bottom of the intake to catch the brunt of the waste. Easier and faster to clean the small intake cage sponge plus I have Pleanty of medium to seed other tanks for myself or new hobbyists.
Thank you cory
Simple and effective, great!
Already put these In all my filters. Along with pre filter sponge
Love my API Superclean for this reason. Much quieter than the Aquaclear, but didn't take off in the market.
Love the different camera angles!!!!!!!!!
Great help!!!
Awsome vid !!!
WOW!!!! Thank you!!
After every fish video I watch, one of Corys videos come on afterwards automatically. And I love it
Great tip
Tip: if you only use the blue cartridges, dont throw them away, rinse them out in tank water. It will save you money.
Thatâs what I do
Brilliant! Thank you. đ€
Great tips. Got into the hobby about a year ago and it took me months to figure this out. Kept wondering why when I changed my cartridges, a day would go by and the water would get cloudy.
One thing I would also suggest is to go to Walmart and get some basic polyfill. Put that in front of your coarse sponge as a prefilter. It's cheap and you can toss it out next water change, this way your coarse sponge doesn't get too gunky, and just a quick rinse in tank water is enough to keep it going great.
where you cleaning the cartridge to the point of sterilizing it.
Very helpful for a beginner of a budget!
Great video I just recently upgraded to the fluval bio max bags instead of 2 filter pads and it works better
never tried foam blocks but I would like to
I also cut sponge for my intake. Ur a great thinker
Thanx for the pointers.
Hi cory love this video love this kind of videos
Great useful video â€
Great video!!
Arts nâ Crafts with Cory. đ. Nice video and very useful for anyone who has never modified their filters.
Thanks for the very informative video.
Thank you so much đ you used the Walmart one that i have, perfect đđœ
Thank you
Optimizing filtration: fill it with reusable sponge.
You are a pioneer of the aquarium hobby
thanx dude!
Some coarse pad and medium intake sponge goes nicely on the aqueon 20. Bought those after seeing the MarineLand 5 Gallon vid here. After all the things I've learned from this channel my tetra and amano tank almost takes care of itself and I'm no longer at war with the snails.
I am totally with you as far as biological filtration, but not sure if it will work the greatest for mechanical filtration. I have those in my sump and a lot of finer stuff is passing through. So mixture of finner sponge and that one will work great in my mind. Awesome vid!
I grabbed a big bag of polyester pillow stuffing on amazon that I use in a thin layer in my filter with the sponges and I find it works really well for sifting out really fine debris. If you pack it too tight though, I found it just clogs up really quickly
Poly-fil for fine filtration after coarse sponges đȘ
I have the floss stuff behind my course sponge which catches gunk that got through the coarse filter.
Honestly, if you have a lot of small particulates you're right. A lot of people just don't have a big problem with them though
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks so much. I am so doing this.
Thanks, Cory.
Fascinating stuff. I'm new to this so I had no idea you could "hot rod" a filter lol. I've got 2 cartridge filters on my tank, I think I'll do the sponge thing that you did on the second filter to one of them and see if it helps keep the water a bit cleaner. The water is perfectly fine, no ammonia or anything, but it's just not as clear as I want it to be.
This is still just a great How To hot rod your filter tutorial. Tres bien!
Awesome tips!
Great video, Cory. I have some experience with the Walmart filters clogging with this method but what happened was the intake water just went out the front and back into the tank. I would say there is a low risk it would flood out the back. Not impossible, just more likely it would pour out the front.
Thanks for the tips!
Nice thanks
Your large prefilter sponge fits over the square Penguin intake. Just got plants from you today. The corkscrew looking java fern (forgot the name) looks really cool. I hope it survives my beginner attempts.
love the Videos like awaya. Great info...
Make sure the hole is covered because fish can get sucked up, I learned the hard way but the technique does keep the water much clearer
Excellent!!!!!!!!
I have a low quality top fin filter that came in the 20 gallon kit with a 2x5 medium sponge with ~400 grams of ceramic media and a bag of carbon sometimes. I have ~20 platies and some corys and it has been working great for 6 months!
Love this video. I mean, c'mon, who doesn't want to save money while increasing your aquarium filtration? The aquarium hobby gets expensive. For every dollar I save is more money I can spend on better/nicer fish and plants.
On a funny note.....Pretty sure Cory, you are chewing with the scissors, every time you make a cut. :D Just like a parent feeding a baby, unconsciously opens their mouth with the infant or toddler while spoon-feeding. Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this tutorial! Wish I would have watched it BEFORE I ever started aquariums! SO good! Exactly what I needed.
He really is a genius!
