OK I just got two, one for each of my Fluval 55 gallon setups...I had to remove the lid to deal with two larger ones in each tank; this new Hygger is a breeze to maintain. THANK YOU
L
15:34 I think of compressed cotton balls personally.
Ok ok I just bought the non powered upgraded one with a vibration machine and tubing, itâs all your fault for it man lol
Great info, thanks
I love that fact that even though you are promoting your own products but itâs the fact you take the time to explain and research and are as transparent as can be.
There has to be a joke about John not liking the vibration sound when he isnât aroundâŠ.. đđđ
Holler out to em, get rid of those suction cups, get magnets! I have never had cups hold to a tank, but magnets won't let go!
Good idea!
Is there a simple way to put good magnets on them?
Yes!
â@@bobstranzenbach4700silicone
Suction cups are fine just after a couple months clean the slick algae off and it works fine again. I think it's just a laziness issue.
I know this was posted a year ago but I just want to say how much youâve helped me in this hobby. Iâve kept bettas for years but when I adopted my angelfish I had no idea what I was doing and since finding your channel you have taught me so much. I was specifically looking for a review for this hygger filter and was ecstatic when I saw youâve posted a video about it. I just want to say thank you and to keep doing what youâre doing because you have helped me - and Iâm sure thousands of others - exceed at fish keeping and it wouldnât be without you and your wife. Thank you so much. Your teaching is amazing and you make it less scary to get started. Thank you!!!
Same, this channel is a godsend for beginners. I haven't gotten bad advice yet. I started the hobby back in September. I hate to admit it but I failed my pet by not doing proper enough research before hand and my tank wasn't cycled. This channel saved my fish, who I love with all of my heart. I've been coming back ever since and now he's living his best life and I'm proud with how far I've come. People actually ask me for help now, haha.
Definitely, I watch them and a few others but I always check KGTropicals for info I'm looking for before I check anyone else.
I love these type of sponge filters. I have been using these for a few months with all my air pumps instead of airstones. So for me I like the extra filtration in my tanks so when I clean my main filters I still have plenty of beneficial bacteria. And another thing I love is it makes setting up new tanks or quarantine tanks easy. I can pull the sponges out of an established tank and put them in another tank. And because it's an extra filter I don't have to worry out crashing the established tank and quickly get the other tank up and running. These are awesome!
These are great. The doubles are especially great for instant cycling a tank. I have the mediums in fry tanks and I keep an set of extra sponges in my display tank sump with extra bags of media. Grab the sponges and a handful of media and I have a cycled filter.
I ordered 4 of them. 2 medium and 2 small. I deep cleaned my guppy/corydora tank tonight and installed the small one and BAM itâs working beautifully. My cories are really enjoying the extra floor space and my guppies are playing in the water spout. Excellent product so far so I highly recommend it! Next, I am upgrading my oranda tank.
Great design . I love the simplicity of just changing the sponge. I will be ordering soon. Also, great presentation.
Iâve been using the medium with power head in my bedroom twenty gallon and love it! I had a hang in the back filter for years and just wasnât happy with the water clarity, but when I switched over, man it was amazing! Also being the n the bedroom I need quiet so having to add an air pump was a no go for me, being a hobbyist since age 9, I in my mid sixties now, I have never found a truly quiet air pump, well the power head on the medium sized truly is, and being oversized it keeps my tank crystal clear. My tank is heavily planted in live plants and even in a twenty no one notices the dual sponges attached to the back of the tank at the back. The biggest bonus is having a thriving colony of cherry shrimp in my community tank there is so much less filter maintenance than I had before, life got so much better. Glad to see you promote these awesome filters.
Aaaaand switching to powerheads on my two hyggers, thank you!
Sponges may seem unsightly, but I remember back as a little kid the families first tank, with a clear internal box filter where you could watch the floss change colors and took up a chunk of real estate. These sponges are a great step up.
Ruth, those worked well though...LOL!
Did you know you can still buy those? I recently went looking for images of them for "back in the day" reasons, and found several current listings.
Hahaha I swore by those
Yes, I had that many years ago.
Those are still good if you need to quick e get a tank going Just take out some media from a cycled tank and stick it in a box filter...instant cycle
I have the small single in my 7, the dual with bio media in my 10 and the nano in my wall aquarium & they all work fabulously. The telescoping feature is great because I actually like to have them just above the water line. Now I know where to get replacements!
I have been watching you recently and have upgraded my 10 with an air pump and was thinking of buying the 2nd one you listed for a 20 long that I'm getting soon thank you so much, I also really like the multiple camera angles, keep it up đ
Glad to see this video. 30 plus years ago I used a double green in color sponge filter. I've been looking for this sponge filter for years I'll be ordering several in the next few weeks.
So tankful for this video and so many alike. Im new to the fish tank world and have learned so much in the last few days. Definitely getting one of these and switching one of my back hanging filter all to sponge instead of cartridge.
Ordered my sponge filter last week from you guys and am happy to say I am very happy how it works and looks. I got the "S" for my 10gallon tank. These are great sponge filters! Thanks for the professional packing job on my order and the quick shipping!
Where do I find this website or how do I find it? Thanks in advance

I have 6 of the larger ones.. They are great.. I put the bio balls in 1 side and filter floss in the other side to help polish the water..EXCELENT product.. Have had mine over 2 years nowđ
Thatâs great to hear. I was just looking at buying one and came here to look for people nodding them in exactly the way you described. Thanks
I used the dual setup on my 20g, but then moved it all into my 100g tank and it works great. I'll be getting a Fluval 407 soon, but the dual sponge filter setup is great for polishing the water and cleaning silt/debris from the water column.
Great stuff!! Started replacing regular sponge filters with these. Like others have mentioned defentily should tell them magnets instead of suction cups. đCan't wait for Aquashella Chicago!!!
This is cool. Glad youâre carrying them. Now I can get these without giving the big A more money đ
I actually bought the nano filter a week ago for a 6 gallon tank and I love it so far. I actually used the spare sponge on the air output pipe to help diffuse the large bubbles it releases since my air pump isnât adjustable. Pretty cool to see you guys talking about the same sponge though!
update? I've been thinking of getting one of those
Your air pump is adjustable. You just need to attach a air control valve to the air line. They cost like $2.
I've been using a hygger dual sponge filter in my largest tank for about 4 months now and WOW do they work incredibly well. I also use the first one you reviewed in my smaller betta tanks and smaller quarantine tanks and have had no issues whatsoever. Highly recommend them and kudos to you for picking them up to sell đđđđ
Question if you don't mind - are you using the ones with the motor or without the motor. If using the motorized one, I was curious if you are able to take it apart for cleaning as I am sure this will get all gunked up over time and will need to be clean at some point. Thanks
What size is your largest tank? Iâm trying to find a good filter for 125 gallon tank
@@xenophobiix get a few of them or look into the Matten filter system for a tank that large.
I've used the non power head one in my 75 65 and 55 love them. Didn't crash my tanks when I do main filter maintenance.... these are amazing and easy to use....
Hi John, I have been using these in various sizes in my betta breeding tanks and grow-out tanks for over two years and have never had a problem with them - excellent value for money here in the UK.
Question if you don't mind - are you using the ones with the motor or without the motor. If using the motorized one, I was curious if you are able to take it apart for cleaning as I am sure this will get all gunked up over time and will need to be clean at some point. Thanks
@@Mrdds1520 I just use an airline attached to the intake of the uplift tube. I use all 4 sizes some twin, some single sponge filters, so easy to clean - when you do a water change, just remove the sponge and squeeze it in the discarded tank water and then put it back...you will have cleaned the poop, etc, but leave plenty of bacteria in/on the sponge
to keep the balance in the tank., hope this helps.
Iâve been using hygger for years, my dual rubbed sponge filter is working well after 4 years, glad that people can appreciate these for their quality
Thank you!! I saw these online and was wondering how they would do and how big they were. Thank you very much. I will definitely buy one from you once I get back on my feet. Been a follower for 2 years
I LOVE the Hygger sponge filter. I've started switching all my tanks with HOB filters to the Hygger sponge filters. I've had fun decorating one of the tanks with plumbing pipes and kindda added some pipes to house the air tubes running to the sponge filters. Makes the filter look part of the underwater pipework decorations. Loving it. I work for a leading retail pet supply company and I wish we were carrying the Hygger.
Fast forward 6+ months. I wish Hygger had a hanger which attached over the tank wall and held the filter system in place, so you can lift the unit out of the tank to pull off a sponge or get into the bio-material compartment. Sticking you arm halfway between your elbow and armpit to reach a sponge or bio-material cup is kindda insane.
Where do I get the extra sponges
I have a sponge filter similar to the double sponge one with a single sponge on it, and it's fantastic.
As for those white balls-first that came to mind is malted milk balls.
I usually use DIY sponge filters for my small thanks (5 or 10 gal) . I"ll definitely try this one out.
Thank you so much! purchasing right away! I have a 10gallon and just lost my whisper, I can't open it to maintain it no matter what I try. So I needed an emergency change as I don't have any back up. Then I saw this and this is just perfect. I do have a 10g but I want it to be heavily planted and with lots of decor for my kuhli loach and shrimp to hide in. I really, really love clean up crew species and I love seeing them snuggled up under and around the driftwood and dragon stone. Thank you so so so much!
I put one of the smallest ones in my new 5.5 betta tank. Itâs a little large in there, but it works great. I stuffed the sponge into my 20 gallonâs hob to season for two weeks and am now cycling the new one with it in. Hopefully that speeds up the cycle. Iâve found you can adjust the volatility of the surface agitation from the bubbles by how deep it is.
I used this filter on my 37g and loved it. I never had any problems with it.
Been looking to get a sponge filter for awhile but never really knew what would be the best pick.
This definitely helped alot! Thanks for the great recommendation and video!
I have one of the hygger double filters on a 20gal high tank and I have NEVER had a cleaner tank. Also have a single one in a small betta tank. They're amazing
hi John
these filters are fantastic
I think theyve been available here in the uk and Oz for a while now but the one with the powerhead built in may well be a game changer and will draw loads more through the sponges!
đ
I just put a sponge pe filter on the intake of a my Aqueon HOB filter. It is Amazing what it filters out. The sponges can be rinsed out and reused of course.
As an added benefit, the filter cartridge in the HOB filter last a lot longer before needing to be replaced .
Bought one of the twin sponge filters 2 weeks ago. It is totally ace. I thought that changing the sponges individually to keep all the good bacteria going would be a great plus. Really, awesome product. Iâm sold and my fish here in the UK - if they could speak - Would defo be for this product. They would love the price also đ
Iâve had the air driven double barrel with coco pebbles for about 6 months and love that filter, not the best for mechanical filtration but that goes for all sponge filters
I bought the one with small pump in it but without biomedia section. It worked great for my 15 gallon 60liters angle fish fry tank.
I use the double sponge filter Hygger with the media cups on my 120 and 180 gallon aquarium. They work great to polish the water. Great product!
Do you use just one filter per tank? Been using a Seachem 75 in my 60 gal breeder but sometimes feel it is too strong even toned down
I have the 55 gal version and it's been a great extra filter in combo with my biowheel and aqueon 200 canister. My philosophy is you can never have too much filtration
Appreciate the review of the new sponge filters. Thanks!
Thanks for this review. I have an Aqueon over-the-back on a 10 gallon tank. I don't have any real issue with it, but wondering if the the small version of the third filter (the first one with bio-media chambers) would do a noticeably (over time I suppose) better job for my tank. What I really like is that I can just T-off from my air pump that is providing air to my air-stone which simplifies the overall tank setup. I like the idea of the bio-chambers and the easily removable, rinsible sponges.
My betta loves his sponge đ§œ filter he loves to lay on it and play in the bubbles and ride the current up and take a breath lol Zora is such a silly boy
Appreciate you! I have one of the double barrel ones with the media chamber. Great for shrimp
Great video love these Sponge filters been using them for a while now
I think the tubing being clear is a good thing for people who have creatures that enjoy playing in or laying eggs in those tiny areas. Khuli loaches and snails come to mind.
John I've been using these exact sponge filters for over a year now and only run 2 of my 7 tanks without them. I love them and my tanks are crystal clean!!!!đ
Question if you don't mind - are you using the ones with the motor or without the motor. If using the motorized one, I was curious if you are able to take it apart for cleaning as I am sure this will get all gunked up over time and will need to be clean at some point. Thanks
@@Mrdds1520 -- I actually have been using both the sponge only and bio + sponge ones. They only require an air house attached to a pump and are very, very affordable and effective.
I really like everything about the side mount filters except for suction cups they don't stay attached to aquarium.
If they were attached using quality magnets I would use them.
That really would be a good design.
Some suction cups will stick for years and are almost impossible to remove.
I'd love to see that, like the Hydor powerheads. It'd be a pretty easy mod though, just attach a magnet with a zip tie or super glue
I have these on 2 of my tanks and the suckers are terrible they never keep the filters attached to the tank. They last about 5 days and drop off. They really need better suckers, or need 3 and not 2 which they come with.
Malt balls đ and I have been using these filters in all my tanks for quite some time!
Love these filters! I have been using them myself and want more!
Need to buy some new filters and I'll be trying these for sure. Thank you for all the great info!
I use these in my Discus hospital tank, super simple and reliable source of beneficial bacteria. Great little workhorse.
I never thought about it until now but if you lay your air/bubble output down and attach to the floor and put your filters upright, you could extend your air output well far away down the middle of the tank to get around rocks or something where the air is coming from inside something and still have the filters upright against the side of tank. That's cool
Saw my local fish store use these filters and Iâm always happy with the quality of their fish. Checks out.
Thank you for another educational video this one on sponge filters, i wanted to know!!
Very helpful video, thanks đ
These are my absolutely favorite sponge filters for a loooong time now... I was about to switch to the standing sponge filters from aquarium coop because I wanted to have a coarser sponge which are not available from Hygger... but Cory refused to ship to Germany (not an insult - I do understand the problem) and so I'm still with the Hygger's over and over. Nice to see, that they arrived in the US ;-) Usually it's the other way around... we in Germany are looking forward to things that is already "state of the art" in America.
Very cool I love that it brings extra sponge and the bio media is awesome too great video wow a power head that is COOL đđđȘ
Love this review! Thanks for doing it.
I made my DIY internal canister sponge filter with bio media, it's big but works so well using half the electricity of a normal pump. I planted lots of vallis in front of it.
Ehime make the best air pumps, its worth the extra in my opinion. Got 2 both are old and work perfectly.
Just got one yesterday and I'm loving it
Love the nano one since I have a 3-gallon, 2 5âs, and 1 10 betta nanotanks. One little suggestion though- the filters were all black, your shirt was black, the back tank was dark and, much as you said you werenât sure about the overhead camera, it was thanks to that camera that we could see the filters the best because of the contrast against the wooden table top. So Iâm glad for the overhead camera. Maybe a shirt that contrasts better with what youâre showing for the next one. đ
I thought the same thing
I discovered these about 2 years ago. They are the bomb. My favorite is the double.
What size tank do you have the double in?
@@kilrkitty0818 I have one in my 20gal which is probably overkill and one in my 50 gal. Been running it in my 50 for 2 yrs and my 20 for 1yr
Thank You! Do you think it would be too much in a 10gl Betta tank?
@@kilrkitty0818 it would be kinda big for a 10 gal. Mainly because of the size of it. the single one would work perfect though.
Iâve been using the double ones, with containers for filter media, for a couple of years now in all my tanks. I use tiny ceramic balls with mine. Theyâre great and the sponges are readily available to buy separately here in the UK.
Where can u buy then
Does it mean I can get rid of my hang on
I love hygger sponge filters đđđ informative video thanks.
I'm going to be starting a rimless planted 10 gallon with three pea puffers. I've been wondering what to do about filtration this looks like the answer. I just wish you showed each one running in a tank, other than that great video and thank you.
I had to get 1! Awesome set up... Thanks!
Hahaha, first thing that came to mind were stale coco puffs. I've also been using the bigger filters with the bio media slot, you brought up points I've never thought of. I was taking the whole thing out and just rinsing them in old tank water. Made life 10x easier. Great video
I ran 4 of these in a heavily stocked 75 gallon and it was great.
I love these filters. I have them in most of my tanks.
Thinking about upgrading to some of these. Great video! New sub.
This is a literal game changer, how freaking cool!!
I love the look of sponge filters but I also love this one :)
I use their filter that has powerhead (small pump)Works great. One of 4 filters I have in my 75
Really enjoyed ur vid. I got to liking aquariums since I was little. As I got older I raised beta's n Oscar's. Then we had a bad winter ice storm n knocked out power for over a week n I lost my prize fish... But these sponge filters r reliable, easy set-up n maintenance. Good extra filtration, n good for like a quarantine tank for sick fish
Nice review. The bio media sponge filter looks like it would work pretty good. You could even put in chemical filtration in the compartment. How is the construction and durability? I have tried this type of sponge filters(dual sponges) in the past and they were always cheaply built and didn't last as long as the traditional sponge filter. I will definitely try out the one with the bio rings container in it. Now, in my opinion, what would really put this sponge filter over the top would be if you could insert an air stone in the lift tube somehow to make them more quite. That was always my issue with traditional sponge filters. I use them religiously in all my tanks and I put in the no-clog air stones from Aquarium Co-op. Makes them super quite. Thanks for sharing.
I just ordered one of these from you guys and can't wait for it to come in so I can get my new tank up and running.
i personally think translucent plumbing my filters is great, as it's way easier to diagnose potential clogs.
when i just started out i had issues with my filter not working due to the hoses and pipes being black, and due to my inexperience, so now i just prefer translucent pipes and hoses as i can easily see when they're starting to gunk up.
I lucked out and found a submersible pump with sponges set up
like the one you said is perfect . It's in a planted 15 gallon tall. I just ran across this video and say it's my favorite filter I've had in years
Excellent redirect link on the filters!~
I have this one it's a good pump.. đ but until watching this i have removed it cause I went for a more expensive one!! As always I fall for the " bigger ones!" Thanks for this! đ
I honestly thought the bio balls looked like little dessert candiesâŠlol!
I'm loving the Aquael Pat Mini filter, it eliminates the noisy Air pump; Zero noise and great water flow.
Now thatâs how to make smart and effective sponge filters!
I don't really need the double sponge with the biomedia. Yes, yes I really do need it.
I love my Seachem 110 Tidal HOB so much.
great filters i use the mini on my 2.5 gal and the small double on my 2o gal long yes overkill i know but works great added some gravel from old tank to the bio media to start the cycle.
Enjoyable communication John--good pitch on your sponge filters too.
These work great for my bigger betta beta buddy.
Coacoa puffs, lol. I first thought of those antique marbels I find in my yard all the time, lol. I have been using the double sponge one for over a year now on one end of my 55 gal and I run an over the back 50/75 Aqueon on the other end. The two work awesome together
I agree with some others, I loathe suction cups for the most part. Wish it was held in with magnets!
They make a magnetic suction cup. Or put some aquarium sealant on the suction cup if you want a more permanent adhesion.
they make a version that just sits at the bottom of the tank
I really enjoy watching your videos!
I run one of those large ones to help polish my tank . I'm thinking about running 2 in my 125 for the same reason and to add a little beneficial bacteria to the tank, first time having Oscars so I'm going the extra mile for them.
Have 4 50 gallon breeder tanks and run them in each tank and they work great been running them for about six months in the tanks now and Fisher perfectly healthy and happy and keeps the water right where it's supposed to be
Thanks for this video, it's made my mind up to purchase the Hygger to supplement the Juwel Bioflow I already have in my 260L
Neat video man I didn't know they still made those lol I remember the old under gravel filters
I use sponge filters as a secondary filter to hang on power filters on smaller tanks and canister filters on larger tanks.
Was a big skeptic on sponge filters but after all these years Iâm finally gonna make the switch
last filter looks good awesome
Hi John new to fish keeping, love your Chanel learned so much from you and Lisa. I have the one with the double filter with the pump. Question is can I put carbon in one of them and keep the media in the other ?
