- In this video I take you through the setup of the Top Fin Pro Series Pro 70 Power filter, exclusively from PetsMart. This is not sponsored and I bought these filters myself. You will also get to see the Pro 110 filter that I bought at half price because someone had returned it. These filters come in 4 sizes, including the Pro 30, Pro 50, the Pro 70, and the Pro 110. The number is the suggested maximum aquarium size in gallons.
NOTE: After some thought, these filters should either be level or slightly tipped forward. If tipped to the rear, it's possible that water could find a way outside the back of your aquarium.

Thank you morpheus, i shall keep your location secret from spiderman
I just got this brand in the Pro50 and this was very helpful. Thank you so much
Great video, great review, I'm looking forward to seeing the long-term review of the filter in a few months. Thank you so much.
Thanks! Yep after a few months or so, it will be time to go back and revisit a few of these filters.
Great video! Thanks for the help explaining this one!👏
Thank you so much for this ! I was having problems with the setup & understanding everything after previously having been a canister filter user for 4 years . This was super simple, but just detailed enough !
Thanks for the review! Was on the fence about which filter to buy and was interested in this one. This video convinced me and I went out and bought 2 of them for my tank after this video! They seem to be great filters.
Mine are working well so far. I hope they work well for you!
So straightforward and easy to understand, I really appreciated the walkthrough and seeing how the flows look! Definitely considering this filter.
Very helpful review! I very much appreciate it.
I just bought one about an hour ago. Wanted to make sure I had everything in order... Ty!
I hope it helped!
I love the way you explained everything. Thanks. The company should pay you for doing this video. Well done 👍.
Thanks. It would be nice if they did but that also makes things a lot more complicated.
Great job
Thanks for the review 👍
Just got mine tonight, after I found out our old pump died, had a couple good reviews so why not try.. thanks for the video!
Thank you so much! We got this but it's used so I needed to know how to set it up 💝 so helpful thanks again
Great video. Can’t wait 4 the follow up video.
Thanks!
Thanks, just bought this and the video is helpful. It seems like it's quiet-running. I got it to replace a very noisy Fluval 110.
Very helpful! Thank you
Awesome video. Clear and helpful. Hope you gain subscribers. Just subscribed.
Much appreciated!
Thank you sooo much for this video. I just purchased one and the insert was horrible!! This was an excellent video🎉🎉🎉
I just got the Pro 30 because my Aqueon kit filter finally gave up the ghost when I was cleaning my tank this morning. So far, I'm pretty impressed by it. It was pretty easy to put together and with the adjustable media, it's going to be very cost effective. The water is clean, and it's not noisy beyond the nice waterfall sounds. I've had Top Fin filters before so I know that priming it was going to be a thing, but for the price, I think it's a pretty decent HOB system. The fish are happy and it seems like it's going to be easy to maintain.
Awesome review! You're the only one that has unboxed this filter haha. I was looking to replace my marineland 220 filter and i came across this one on the petsmart website. I'm glad i found your video because on paper this filter looks very promising. I'm assuming it's new from the Top Fin brand because I've never seen it before now.
I very much liked that you compared the water output from both filters. That 110 will definitely flood my floors.
I like how customizable it looks to be. The chambers seem to be pretty large, I'm sure most of my media in the canister will fit in it. I Just think it's time to go back to HOB. I love canisters but after owning 3 (all different brands) the maintenance is still a pain.
I'll give this one a shot! Hopefully it holds up.
Again great vid! Definitely worth a subscribe my friend.
Thanks! I hope it works well for you. Mine are working fine still. I should have taken all that carbon out because I had to treat one of the tanks for possible parasites and the carbon pulled it all right out of the water. Let us know if you have any issues with it or what I forgot to talk about!
I do love the new pro series. I upgraded mine I used the fluval 7 series blue sponge instead of white pad. In the bottom try I used filter floss. Than on the overflow area I used a fine sponge. I have two 110 pro on a 75 and have the same issue with the water but the flow is really good
This is a very underrated channel
Great Video, mine is about 7 months old now. The sponge is disintegrating and needs to be replaced i have to clean it about once to twice a week, but it is falling apart. I love the filter i use it for extra filtration on my 75 gallon tank, gold fish are dirty fish. Main filter is a fluval 407, but is almost completely plugged after a month, adding this top fin pro 70 really helps and now the fluval is not totally gunked at the end of it’s 30 day maintenance cleaning. Sadly petsmart does not sell just the sponge and you have to drop $20 to get a complete filter kit that includes the charcoal i don’t use. After 7 months the Top Fin Pro 70 is awesome and easy to maintain, i just wish they sold just the sponge.
Great review! thank you! It helped me made up my mind about it :)
Glad it helped! If you think of it, let us know how it goes and if you think there's anything else others should know about it.
Subbed! Amazing video!
Thanks man u helped alot!
Thank you so much for your instructions. You are so much better than the printed instructions.
The instructions are crazy 🤣 I literally had a job assembling foreign stuff for 3yrs and these instructions made no sense lolol
Thank you!!!
Nice video might get me a pro50👍
Thank you
Thank you! Never owned one of these! And when I opened it up, I tried to wing it! Ha! 🤯
I have this system. Love the media tray. Love how the white "sponge" filter can be removed without taking everything else apart when that one component needs cleaned. Whatever media you put in the top can just stay there if you need to remove the media in the bottom tray since that tray slides out. The two different style spout caps are great. Should have made those big slots in the lid the same size as the spout caps so the style you are not using could be in storage right there on the lid.
The surface skimmer is stupid. My fish bump the tube and it falls off. The tubes for the skimmer are too loose. Also, if you remove the intake tube to clean a mechanical sponge on the outside of the intake tube or to clean the inside of the tube.....the skimmer pipework is blocked by most lids and light systems. I get to remove my light and lid when I want to clean that intake tube mechanical sponge filter.
I am not a fan of motors that are outside the tank. This one is rather quiet but that is not my issue. The day will come when the rubber seal between the case body and the motor carriage will start leaking and then fish water is running down the wall and outside of the tank all over the display cabinet and the floor.
This is all great info for everyone here. I agree with all of it. I haven’t had a problem with the skimmer not staying below my glass lids but it might be a problem in a shallow tank. And I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to just yank out the sponge to clean it. I’ve been taking the whole carrier out each time.
@FishyReview - I just wrote you a question about this leaking business, and although I've checked the impeller washer ring (even replaced it) the problem stems from two actual wholes in the bottom of the system. Does anyone have this problem? I wish I could attach a picture to it.
Good detailed review, thanks. I really like that media basket layout compared to Aquaclear. How loud is this filter compared to other HOB's you have owned?
The trickle output option makes a little noise, but the waterfall version is pretty quiet. Overall noise is somewhere in the middle of the range.
Decided to get one of the 70 pro series... thank god it fit my acrylic 60 gallon hexagon.. the slit in the back doesnt take many filters.. this one fit... and wow its very quiet.. i cant believe how noisy thise marineland filters were i was using.. Water movement though is a bit slow it seems.. and there is alot of watee bypass on this. Not too fantastic for mechanical filtration if you want to use polishing pads. But overall im happy. Great filter
The flow does seem pretty gentle, unlike some filters.
@@FishyReview i wish it flowed down but out across the surface like other filters.. dont like how it drops down. It causes plants in the rear of my tank to push down
Is both protein skimmer and cascade filter
Just got an aquaclear110 this seams alot better in the aquaclear the water can go around the sponge and doesn't have the sponge that covers the hed why havent i heard of this
A terrific set-up help!! I've been away from the hobby a few years, I needed a leg-up with this filter. Is the Protein Skimmer supposed to spin? Mine doesn't and it's floating freely.
Nope, it doesn’t spin, just floats. Glad this could help!
@@FishyReview : Thanks, mine is running smoothly tonight!!
I’m having a hard time getting the air bubble out of the u tube. I have no problem clearing the tube on the aquaclear by slightly shaking and adjusting flow rate. Any suggestions?
Make sure the flow knob is all the way high instead of low. However, I really didn't have that problem except that it's really slow to get that air bubble out. I'm only talking about a couple of minutes, though.
Not sure if mine is setup correctly. I only get flow out of one of the water fall openings
I would check if it's level, then check that the impeller isn't in a bind somehow. Make sure the flow knob is set to the maximum position too.
I know this video is a few months old but I have a few questions I'm right now taking care of some Goldfish and a Dojo loach (they're not my but I'm the one that's been taking care of the tank) they are in a 55-gallon Cube wondering if this filter would work for it .the filter that came with the tank is old and it sounds like it's going out and the tanks not been really cleared it's been really murky.
It’s rated for up to 70 gallons and I think it would be ok as long as it will physically fit on the tank. Just keep an eye on the filter sponge and wring it out monthly or as needed. If you get it, let me know how it works!
Will one of these work on a 45 gallon fresh water tank with two gold fish that are 3inch’s at the moment !?
I think it would be enough for now, but be sure to keep up on cleaning it out every 2-4 weeks. Goldfish are big eaters that will keep growing.
Would this be a good filter for my turtle tank? I'm currently using the TR318 Submersible filter. But it doesn't seem to be doing what it supposed to do.
I’ve never kept turtles but I think they need lots of filtration. The sponge on this one might clog up frequently in that case. You might do fine with this one. But I would also recommend a Tidal or Whisper IQ as options.
I got the p30 and I noticed there was a lot of empty space. Can you tell me where I would put filter floss?
The way they designed these, the water flows through the sponge first. I suppose you could put filter floss after the sponge in the open area, but I'm not sure how much it would do. I haven't added any floss to mine, only biological media.
I have a 75 gallon. Would the bigger one be good for it
It depends how heavily you load your tank. The size of the filter seems to demand the dimensions of a 75 but if it were my tank and I had a lot of fish, then I’d possibly end up running 2 of them. But make sure to keep the filter pads clean or it may try to overflow over the back.
I'm curious how slient is that. I have one from Top Fin and it sounds noisy as a fridge. I'm wondering if that's normal.
The filter itself is quiet in my opinion. But the way the water flows out gets noisy quickly as your tank water level drops. But noise is relative. If you are used to living in a completely silent location then anything might be annoying. I always have background noise from my always on furnace fan and other sources. If I didn't, my tinnitus would drive me bonkers.
the holes on top of the lid is or "airing"? lmao i thought it was so you cant put some plants in there like lucky bamboo to absorb some of the nitrates in the water...
THAT is an excellent idea! Maybe that's the reason, but the instructions didn't mention that.
Hello! so you have this Top Fin filter and the Tidal filter reviewed.. which filter do you prefer a bit more?
I prefer the Tidal. They’re both on the same tank and I’ve had to do nothing to the Tidal.
Thanks for your reply! 👍(subscribe)
Could you elaborate a bit on what you mean?
Hello there. I just purchased this tonight (11-13-2021). I bought the 70. It's for my map turtle I just adopted last week. So I opened my box and UNFORTUNATELY there's no instruction pamphlet inside! And my question to you is, do you think I'll be good to go after watching your video? Or should I call the # on the box to see If they can send me one? I appreciate you taking the time to read my comment, thank you.
Sorry that I didn't see this sooner! I think you're good without the instructions because they weren't very good anyway.
@@FishyReview lmfao! I ended up getting it running. Now all I gotta do is get my hands on a bigger tank. I have a 20 gallon long and I had no clue how big this filter truly was gunna be so I have to fill my tank up almost to the rim and I have a mesh screen lid to keep the cat out and the poor turtle damn near squishes herself on the lid when she goes on to her floating turtle dock to bask, the poor thing! Lol either a bigger tank, or some kind of raised lid of some sort. No clue where to even start looking for one of those tho lol. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment I wicked appreciate it! Have a great evening.
Why does the box show the protein skimmer connected with the longer end of the elbow pipe?
It’s definitely incorrect on the box. I think it made the photo look better? There’s a notch on that part so it has to go the other way.
@@FishyReview Just as I went to your next video content. You either said it was pictured incorrectly or I seen it in the comment section. Either way, thank you for replying back to me. I'll support your channel because I like to hear real information, directly from your perspective.
Would this be overkill for my 40 gallon?
Nope, I don't think so. I've moved mine to a 29 that's heavily loaded with baby plecos.
That top fin filter looks pretty good how's it been working so far
They both work great as filters and I love that they included the pre-filter sponge as an option. However, both have overflowed out the back when they become severely clogged. This would easily be prevented by doing routine maintenance. My concern is that anyone can get busy and accidentally end up with a flood. I've never had another filter fail in that manner when clogged so I feel I have to flag that as a concern.
@FishyReview that is my very fear! I had another similar filter different brand that would lift the basket when too dirty, eventually coming home to a quarter of the 20gal emptied onto the floor luckily it couldn't pump anymore out than that but total nightmare! I was scared everyday it would happen again. It did a couple days later and didn't make sense it couldn't have gotten that dirty so fast. I will never use it again
I would only buy it if they added internal motor . Self start
Please update how this filter is doing now.
There's a follow-up video where I clean it out, too. Since then it still works great - just don't let the sponge clog up too much or it may drip a little over the back.
You forgot to show how the surface skimmer works. I was hoping you would
I'm really sorry about that. I realized it after publishing the video. Maybe I can do a follow-up soon.
The canister on this one looks a lot bigger than those in the top fin, pro 110
Yep, sure is. It's 7.5" wide on the 70 and they are each 5.5" wide on the 110.
I really need your help on this. I have a TOP Fin PROSERIES /TOP FIN-PRO POWER FILTER MODEL# TF PRO 300. I love how it works, but it LEAKS. Ifound two recessed holes in the bottom - I've taken a picture of it, but nobody seems to have written anything on this subject. Can you comment or send me to someone who can?
Since there’s no 300, did you mean 30? My top fin pro filters will leak over the top, very slightly, where you might notice that’s where it’s coming from. it only happens if the spong is getting clogged up. Maybe you could tweet me your pics? @fishyreview on Twitter. Not sure I can help but I can try. Can you see exactly where the leak is?
Is it quiet??
After running these for a while now, I can say they aren’t the quietest. The filter itself is quiet but the way the water comes out can make some noise, especially when the tank level gets lower. The Tidal HOB is the quietest that I have. of course if you want really quiet then a canister filter is the way to go.
Looks like they tried to copy and then modify an Aquaclear to an extent, but instead of it being a hit, it ended up a miss.
So... I just replaced my old filter with the pro30. After replacing filters, all my fish died. Some please help
Replacing a filter can cause your tank to cycle if there aren't enough beneficial bacteria elsewhere in the tank. Whenever possible it's better to run the new and the old together for 4 weeks or so. Also, you could have kept the filter media from the old one and placed it in the new one. Sorry to hear about your fish. I hope things are settling down.
@@FishyReview that's great information to know. Thank you!
Why it leaking like wtf
I’ve had a problem with mine overflowing out the back several times, which is not good at all. But it’s always been because the filter needed to be cleaned and had needed it for a long time and I hadn’t gotten to it. One did it the other day and I couldn’t clean out the sponge right then, so I turned the flow down to minimum and it quit. Thinking of doing a 3rd video just about that problem.
@@FishyReview they have a lifetime guarantee as with any other top 10 products I love them
Just bought one. Motir is SO loud... what a shame.
Do you mean the actual pump or that it makes water noises? I have a new video coming out this week about this filter where you can get a good listen to what it should sound like, so be sure to check that out. If it’s making noise then maybe something isn’t quite together correctly.
@FishyReview it is the motor. I ended up smearing Vaseline on the inpeller it to quiet it down. Wonder how long that will last. The water noise was there too so I put some clay balls over the outflow and that quieted it down.
Never tip backwards
Yes, definitely a bad idea, as I’ve found out.
oh oh ........Aqua clear is in a big big problem.......
A.C + skimer & diffuser = top fin pro
I might have to get an AquaClear next!
These motors don’t even last 6 months
Mine are still working. What happened to yours?
@@FishyReview first water change it went crazy and sounded like it was spinning dry or something, gave up on it.
Store brands are very innovative and cheap but it still a store brand. My problem is you are married to the chain when you buy into them. The name brands are everywhere with tons of shopping options. If topfin and others where in the mom and pop shops I would buy into them.
Terrible 😂
