Big Isle wilderness and Sylvania wilderness were some of my favorites to camp, this type of camping is sorta like my happy place, I only wish I had cooking skills like you, and I died laughing when you said “people monsters that’ll eat you”, that killed me! It’s soo good but I had to completely let it go when I started camping 😂😂 Thank you!! I’m trying to get out as much as I can with work but I will definitely keep going and making videos 😊
I just want to add one more thing, maybe you already know about the J stroke, but incase you haven’t, the J stroke is a paddling technique that allows you to paddle on just one side of your canoe, it’s more efficient compared to the constant flipping of the paddle to your left and right, it’s simple to learn, and when done correctly your canoe will stay more straight and move with a bit more pace too. It’s like riding a bike, all you need is some practice and you will be zooming along, I’ve learned this by watching CZcams tutorials, so I hope this helps.
Oh you learned by watching tutorials? Thats impressive! I tried it for the first time on my last trip and it felt so awkward. I think I need to watch a few more tutorials lol
@@ApeaceofthewoodsYep, I like watching videos of others out camping, it’s my way of sometimes learning something new and or just getting a taste of it when I’m stuck at home, even after watching your video, now I wanna try to cook a pot roast or something different instead of sticking to my usual and extremely simple meals, like a brat over the fire, so thanks for sharing !👍
19:24 A partridge can make a thumping sound. I would expect it in fall though, and you'll hear the thumps increasing in frequency for a duration of like 8 seconds.
That was exactly that sound! I looked it up because I thought it was so weird and found out that it was a partridge. I’ve been hearing them on pretty much every trip since this one
come down to florida sometime and travel the st johns! its gorgeous, and youll see animal life like no other place in north america. good video, pretty face. hope to watch the channel grow.
i love your enduring sprit. i watched your other 2 videos first and i would like to suggest a piece of equipment if your going to play in the UP. its a big place and if your walking in the wrong direction your can go for a long ways without seeing anybody. so all that said, if you dont have one of these you should very much consider getting one. this model is my personal favorite Garmin eTrex Legend its an older model but very user friendly. i like my slightly newer color screen one best its the Legend Cx (it seems to have a little more power and picks up more satellites).
Aww thank you so much ☺️ and thank you for the suggestion. I havnt looked into those models but I like the full screen vs. the In Reach. I’ll definitely considered them both!
@@Apeaceofthewoods So a couple things about the differences in the two. Here is my disclaimer, all I know about the In-Reach is the quick overview of what it does on the Garmin website aka: you quite possibly know more about what it does that I do. From what I see the In-Reach is a “Communication device with a side of “this is where I am” the Legend is strictly a “this is where I am” device. The Legend needs no subscription, put in two AA batteries turn it on and it works (I’ve had the batteries last for several days depending on use). The “Track” function makes a trail on the screen of where you’ve traveled and can be zoomed in/out. The “Mark” feature lets you “drop a pin” where you are (say your campsite) then you can use the “GoTo” to get back to that spot. You can also use Google Earth to find a spot you would like to see/visit, put the GPS coordinates in the Legend and GoTo that spot using the “Bearing” reading on the Legend. In a nutshell that’s the biggest difference I see. The In-Reach seems (note disclaimer) to be a “Help im lost” kinda thing where as the Legend will get you out on your own. Not saying the Reach isn’t a good device to have it is but, as a “Boomer” there's just not a lot of stuff on it I personally would use. 🙂
I've had the etrex 35t for navigation and the mini for safety. Sold them both to buy the inreach 66i. It does both functions. The Garmin software absolutely sacks but it does work. One device is so m7ch easier. The new 67i is supposed to have better software.... check the CZcams reviews/comparisons.
I use a much less expensive Canadian brand called Zolio. Yes, in order to text, you need a cell phone, but you can use it by itself if you only want to send interval “breadcrumb” gps checkins to whomever. Works great for me so far. I don’t hike a lot, so I only keep the svc enabled when I go
This is my first canoe so I don’t have anything else to compare it to. I still think it’s pretty heavy lol. It’s 40lbs so not too easy for me to portage although I can do it. It is not made for big water that’s for sure, but I can appreciate it for a first canoe…
Wow! You really lucked out finding the camera. There was much to overcome on this trip... BUT YOU STILL MANAGED A 5 🌟 DISH! After a day like this, I'd be eating chef boyardee out of a can! 😅😂
I found it but I wasn’t that lucky lol. It hasn’t turned on since 😩 I ended up having to get another one. Haha I don’t know if it was 5 star but it was pretty good. The trip started out rough but I don’t regret it. I learned a ton on that trip! Thank you for watching 😊
The thumping..bigfoot or ruffed grouse, u will know a ruffed grouse they hold still ubtil u almost step on them then fly up in ur face as do woodcocks. Please invest in a quality pair of hiking boots , Merrell is a good brand, that grub u filmed is great bait, nice trip take care
Hopefully not big foot 😂😂😂 it was a ruffed grouse. I ended up looking it up. I’ll have to watch out for them flying up that way because that would be terrifying! I do have winter hiking boots by Oboz that I like but the Solomon shoes I usually wear are water/hiking shoes so they dry out quickly! Thank you ☺️ you take care too
@Apeaceofthewoods oboz & Solomon are good stuff from what I hear, unfortunately they don't make a wide size for us bigger guys or I'd try them, good luck on them
I love how authentic your videos are. With so many outdoor channels, everything just seems perfect, but you show the real struggles and challenges. May I ask what canoe you have? Mine's from the '70s and it weighs a ton. I'd really like to get something lighter.
I want to take a camping trip around Lake Michigan up through Michigan and down through Wisconsin. To include this area, any recommendations? I will using my travel trailer, so BLM land and/or campgrounds will be my goal. Pops to you for doing all of this solo!!!
That sounds amazing! I’ve heard great things about Sylvania Wilderness. It’s on the boarder of Michigan and Wisconsin. I haven’t been yet myself but I would love to go. Thank you ☺️Good luck to you !
Threats - people, bears (very rare, a bitch when it happens), weather. I didn't laugh till the knife. Axe, axe, axe. Knowledge and experience are not the same, eh? Cooking looks amazing. Keep learning, take care of your very young life for all the miles ahead. Did you ever get the PERCH?
Knowledge and experience are definitely not the same. I thought I watched enough camping CZcams and did enough google searches to know a little bit. But none of it really prepared me for what I was in for…good and bad. I did not catch the perch :/
Sorry to hear about your camera. I hope it tuned out well. I guess the SD-card survived since the video is out. A tip if you get electric wet is to put the device in a bowl of uncooked rice. The rice will pull the moisture out of the device.
Thank you! The SD card survived but the camera did not 😩 I tried rice and the silica packets and nothing worked. I am grateful I didn’t lose the footage.
Thank you!! ☺️☺️ I actually haven’t used social media in almost 3 years lol. I would maybe do a video like that in the future. I’m focusing on CZcams right now but I can also see starting another social media account at some point in time
Great video, showing the difficulties and rewarding experience, what time of year did you film this ? It seemed like the temperature wasn't too extreme
I agree with some of the comments below, regarding having some sort of GPS as being a must-have to navigate being lost, which may happen to anyone. I have one for hiking and one for my Hobie Pedal kayak and consider both to be essential safety/survival tools. . Did your camera survive? If not feel free to link to an Amazon wishlist and I'll donate a new one if you keep sharing these adventures with us. . I was waiting for your #1/most rational fear to be bears and I thought that might be why you feel best on islands (although, since they swim I suppose they could visit the islands too). I lived with a lady for awhile that had Lyme which can be very rough. Therefore my #1 is a tie between tics and bears, both of which I want to always avoid (I fear them both more than Black Widows and Brown Recluse spiders, which have both snacked on me in the past). Now, please, finish your story and let us all know what your plans (31:50) are to deal with your three fears! I am on the edge of my seat wondering.
I did get an inReach but I don’t think it would be a bad idea to get the Garmin Etrex that was recommended. My camera did not survive 😭I ended up biting the bullet and getting another one because I do intend to keep sharing these adventures! That is so nice of you to offer to donate though. I really appreciate you following along 😊😊😊 Haha bears are definitely a concern for me as well…they probably should be a top rational fear. It’s crazy how the mind works because the idea of encountering a black bear isn’t as terrifying as encountering a large water snake…even though I know they’re harmless. I can’t believe you’ve actually been bitten by both spiders 😱 I don’t think I’ve ever had a spider bite…at least that I know of. Here’s the quick answer: People Monsters - Not sure if you’ve watched the show but as long as you hang up a talisman at night you’ll be ok Water Snakes - I pretend they don’t exist and go on about my trip Ticks - Long sleeves and pants, permethrin and avoiding areas with high Lyme disease risk in the warmer months
Thank you!! Unfortunately the camera did not survive but FORTUNATELY the memory card did. I didn’t lose any of the footage. I still have the camera in case by some miracle it turns on again one day lol
Yes! I guess it was a ruffed grouse lol. It definitely didn’t sound like something you would hear in nature so it really threw me off until I had a chance to google it
@@Apeaceofthewoods it's a great escape for someone like me with bad health and use to be able to do camping and outdoor activities. So thank you so much. I'll definitely be following along young lady. May I say how impressed and proud I am of you. Again thank you so much
Aww well at least you are lucky enough to have had the experiences. Some people go their whole lives and never get to experience being out in nature. I really appreciate your kindness and positivity. I hope you’re having a great day ☺️
I felt bad for you at the beginning when the wind was giving you problems. That was a pitiful expression you had. I'd say that was a good attitude for all that went wrong.
Haha I was genuinely scared and considered the possibility of not being able to leave that spot on the side of the island 😂 I can laugh about it now. All in all it was a great learning experience. Except the camera thing. Could have done without that experience
As a hiker/camper myself, find ways to ease fire-starting vs. the strike method, especially in high-wind areas. The best way to get past that is to soak cotton balls in petroleum jelly. They light very easily with a match or torch lighter, and stays lit. It's very low weight, too. Also, pack as much Birchwood bark 14:08 as you can in your pack, for emergency purposes. Great job so far. Also, look for ways to lower your base weight, ie, food, clothes, etc.
I am definitely going to start with the cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly. A couple people have recommended it and I seem to always have a bit of a struggle with the fire. I am really trying to reduce the weight and number of items I carry in my pack but there are a few things I’m having a hard time giving up. I will have to get it figured out for future trips. I do treat my clothing and gear with permethrin. The sawyer brand is pretty expensive so I’m looking for a better option. Thank you so much for all of the advice 😊😊😊
I can see your next investment being a kayak. You might prefer them with some binoculars☺️and identification books✨your doing something that I’ve been waiting to see. Beginning with those weekend adventures, showing people that it can be done and can enjoy the beauty around us finding some much needed peace✨🌱 In places that I personally hold as sacred🪶what brought you here from the beauty of Washington?

Me too! I love BILW and canoe camping has become my favorite style of camping. Haha it does come with a lot of mishaps since I’m just getting started. Omg have you watched that show??

You never forget your most vital piece of kit. Make a check list its always the first item oacied on your person.
You’re right. I typically always forget something but that’s something I need to make sure I have
come down to florida sometime and travel the st johns! its gorgeous, and youll see animal life like no other place in north america. good video, pretty face. hope to watch the channel grow.
That’s a beautiful river. Maybe one day! Thank you and thank you for watching 😊😊
@@Apeaceofthewoods absolutely, glad your channel popped up haha
I think We would like your videos more if we knew you were protected and well lit
To the evening skys ✨
Later Smurf. 🇺🇸🕯️👍
i love your enduring sprit. i watched your other 2 videos first and i would like to suggest a piece of equipment if your going to play in the UP. its a big place and if your walking in the wrong direction your can go for a long ways without seeing anybody. so all that said, if you dont have one of these you should very much consider getting one. this model is my personal favorite Garmin eTrex Legend its an older model but very user friendly. i like my slightly newer color screen one best its the Legend Cx (it seems to have a little more power and picks up more satellites).
🙂
@@ottisthedog3544 This is so helpful! Thank you for all the info. I actually will look into getting one
I don’t hike a lot, so I only keep the svc enabled when I go
I'm sure that's a great canoe for portages, but wow it is narrow, and that seat being that high up I'd be tippin over for sure.
Aww I appreciate that ☺️ I have an Esquif Adirondack. It’s 40lbs but it’s really tough and can handle being banged around a bit
Another great video please keep it going
What is that matt you are sleeping on, it looks very comfortable?
Thank you!! I plan to keep going as much as I can 😊😊 it is the Big Agnes Rapide. I think it’s pretty comfortable
Oh, I forgot to mention that I love your videos!
Thank you! The SD card survived but the camera did not 😩 I tried rice and the silica packets and nothing worked. I am grateful I didn’t lose the footage.
Great job on the videos! Would love to see a ‘get to know you’ video! Do you share your socials?
Thank you!! ☺️☺️ I actually haven’t used social media in almost 3 years lol. I would maybe do a video like that in the future. I’m focusing on CZcams right now but I can also see starting another social media account at some point in time
Shoreline paddling.
Transversal to get across.
To avoid the wind?
Great video, showing the difficulties and rewarding experience, what time of year did you film this ? It seemed like the temperature wasn't too extreme
Thank you!! 😊 This trip was May 9. The weather on this trip was actually perfect! Lows in the 40s highs 60s
Learn the J stroke when paddling your canoe... good luck : )
I agree, learning the J stroke would be really helpful. Thank you!
Watching from Massachusetts, are there wolves on Mackinac ?
Thanks for watching 😊 I’m pretty sure there are. There are definitely wolves in the UP
I love ur videos. And if u ever want someone to tag along I'd love to. Also ur incredibly beautiful 😍
Aww thank you so much 😊
When is your next video?
My goal is to do at least one trip per month now and hopefully more in the future. I should have one ready to post the weekend of August 10 😊😊
I really appreciate you following along 😊😊😊
Haha bears are definitely a concern for me as well…they probably should be a top rational fear.
Here’s the quick answer:
People Monsters - Not sure if you’ve watched the show but as long as you hang up a talisman at night you’ll be ok
Water Snakes - I pretend they don’t exist and go on about my trip
Ticks - Long sleeves and pants, permethrin and avoiding areas with high Lyme disease risk in the warmer months
The 'thumping" sound is probably a Ruffed grouse drumming.
Haha I finally figured that out after googling because I thought it was so weird
@@Apeaceofthewoods You are learning. YOU GO GIRL!!!!
Snakes don’t usually move at night in Northern Michigan…its usually too cold for them at night.
Omg so good to know…I’m also terrified of seeing one during the day…
You must have rescued the SD card, but did the camera survive?
The SD card was fine thankfully but the camera was not. It still won’t turn on :/
The thumping is a ground bird!
I figured it out after the trip! A ruffled grouse. Funny how everyone immediately knew what I was talking about
Get yourself a kayak paddle, its not traditional but its much easier! Plus you don't get as wet!
I do have one and I get around a lot quicker with it! I’ll be using it until I can figure out this J stroke lol
Great video, hope the camera survived!
Thank you!! Unfortunately the camera did not survive but FORTUNATELY the memory card did. I didn’t lose any of the footage. I still have the camera in case by some miracle it turns on again one day lol
@Apeaceofthewoods sorry to hear! Have you tried putting it in some rice?
Do you take any bear precautions?
Yes! Bear spray always and typically use a bear vault
@@Apeaceofthewoods did the sites have bear vault’s?
@@danpoloskey1225 oh not the sites. I have one of these www.rei.com/product/768902/bearvault-bv500-journey-bear-canister
You need to learn the J Stroke for paddling a Canoe !
You’re right I do need to learn the J stroke!
@@Apeaceofthewoods Yeah, but do it when you’re ready. Learning on your own timeline is part of the adventure!
Figure out that wood thumping?
Yes! I guess it was a ruffed grouse lol. It definitely didn’t sound like something you would hear in nature so it really threw me off until I had a chance to google it
@@Apeaceofthewoods whew! 😂👍🏾
I call them ruffled grouse lol
Деда мазая там не видели, спросите у него где зайцы🙂
I’m not familiar with Grandfather Mazai. Looked him up. Seems to be a great guy who saved the hares from the flood. Maybe I’ll run into him :)
@@Apeaceofthewoods I apologize, these are my stupid jokes again, may Grandpa Mazai rest in peace, you have nice weather👍
Never seen that kind of latrine before… 🤔
Really? That’s interesting lol
Bigfoot… definitely Bigfoot. That’s perfect country for Bigfoot 😬 Did I mention Bigfoot ? 😏😎
lol you did mention big foot 😊
Do you like it
Do I like……Big Island Lake Wilderness?
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching 😊
Just found your channel and I love it. Great adventure. Please everyone like subscribe and leave a positive comment ❤
These comments from you are so sweet. I really really appreciate it. I’m so happy you found my channel ☺️☺️☺️ thank you!!!
Also, if you are concerned about ticks & mosquitos, research permethrin for clothes and gear, which kills both on contact.
It was nice of your boyfriend to drop off that wood for you 😂
I can see your next investment being a kayak. You might prefer them with some binoculars☺️and identification books✨your doing something that I’ve been waiting to see. Beginning with those weekend adventures, showing people that it can be done and can enjoy the beauty around us finding some much needed peace✨🌱
In places that I personally hold as sacred🪶what brought you here from the beauty of Washington?
Haha I could use a good pair of binoculars and probably identification books as well ☺️ thank you. We all need a little more adventure, beauty and peace…even if it’s just for a weekend here and there. I initially moved here for work. And then just never left lol
I love your authenticity in your videos! I grew up in Manistique and have never been to these lakes! Definitely planning to go! Thanks for representing us women who love the woods!
Thank you Gwen! What a great place to grow up…I think I would move there if I could. If you love the outdoors you should definitely go. I’m just getting back from a second trip there and I’m sure I’ll go again
